"There's no way to beat this game. The only difference is when and where you die..."Having cleared the first and second floors of Aincrad at great cost, Kirito, Asuna, and the rest of the players ascend to the third floor. Tenuous new allies await them--most crucially, Kizmel, the elven knight. Kizmel is supposed to be a minor NPC with low-level AI, but she soon reveals herself to be much more. With new allies come new complications, though, and the elves of the vast third-floor forest are no more united than the players who have just arrived there. The intrigue deepens when a mysterious figure challenges Kirito, and what begins as a simple contest of skill may actually be something far deadlier! Sword Art Online: Progressive is a new version of the Sword Art Online tale that chronicles the entirety of Kirito and Asuna's epic adventure through Aincrad--from the first level all the way up!

By Jose Mier After just reading the first 100 pages it amazing how interesting and pleasurable the book brings as you continue the death game of SAO. No spoilers but i do love how they touch the sophistication of a particular AI (not Yui) that Kirito and Asuna meet. I havent finished it yet but it is still an amazing book. Reki Kawakara is a great author.

Progressive 2 (light novel) ~ events of floor 3 transpire ~ =^.^= By Christopher Barrett (Note: this is a review for the novel - I think Amazon is lumping both the manga and novel reviews to the same page)SAO Progressive 1 had a couple of short stories / novellas about the first and second floor of Aincrad. This volume is a bit different since it contains one longer story focused on the events of floor 3. I won't reveal too much since there are spoilers galore, but the story centers around Kirito and Asuna (of course) and a mysterious NPC elf who seems to be more than just any regular NPC. Their journey takes them through the massive forests of the 3rd floor and they meet and interact with the other 40 odd front line players who are starting to organize into guilds. Kirito and Asuna have tough decisions to make, decisions which will impact their relationship and their future in the world of Aincrad and the game of death.Though I enjoyed having a couple of stories in SAO Progressive 1, I really did like the single story format of this light novel. The reader really gets to know the secondary characters, so things have much more dramatic impact when some 'events' transpire. Overall I highly recommend this for fans of SAO - even more than the manga versions.

The adventure on the 3rd floor is great but I dislike how Kirito kept thinking about the first day and how he abandoned Klein and co. In the 1st progressive novel, I was okay with it as Kirito thought about it 2 or 3 times, but in the 2nd novel, he was like thinking about it 4 to 5 times. Asuna and Kirito are my OTP in this series but after seeing on how Kirito kept thinking about abandoning Klein, Klein should be Kirito's Husband while Asuna is his Wife. I hope this will be toned down in the 3rd novel. One must keep an open mind about the data in these progressive novels as compared with the original novel/manga/anime, as there are quite a few changes and will contradict the original information, like how ALF is formed, etc. I just treated the original novels as first drafts and these progressive series as final.

The Shepherd of Hermas was one of the most popular books--if not the most popular book--in the Christian Church during the second, third and fourth centuries. Believed by the early Christians to have been the work of the Hermas referred to by the Apostle Paul in his letter to the Romans, this book was regarded as inspired Scripture by many and even included in several of the early canons. At the very least, the historical and universal acclaim of this work by those who were still burning with the recent fire of Pentecost demands a serious consideration of the message it gives to us; a message that, after nearly two thousand years, still exhales the prophetic fragrance of the ancient, apostolic faith. This version has been updated into modern language for a new generation to rediscover this captivating work of the early Church.

Should be required reading for Christians By wireless world Hermas was a close friend to the Apostle Paul, and had an incredible personal relationship with the Holy Spirit, which is revealed in this writing. One can summarize the book with the simple words of Jesus, "now go and sin no more". This is not watered down Christianity as you may hear being preached today, it's early church history and teaching that was included in many of the early church cannon's of scripture. It doesn't deter from the Bible, it doesn't conflict with the Bible...if anything it only magnifies your Bible and it pulls apart the sticky pages in your Bible that contain the things we'd rather not have preached to us on Sundays. This book will reignite your faith, and will help you search out the things in you that need to be brought to the surface and dealt with so you can finally get free.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Eh. By TW For starters I want to give props to whomever edited this book. There weren't any errors! Which was great. Now on to the review. My dislikes: the grandmother intervening. I don't like when people intervene into other people's relationships. That's annoying and its not her place. She got every couple except the parents with that damn punch. Eli &Gia. Alle & Ethan. & I'm predicting Kellen &Tayler are next. It's both good and bad. Had Alle & Ethan not drank the punch would they even consider being with one another? Another dislike are the main characters Alle & Ethan. Alle was too weak in my opinion. She didn't want to be a disappointment yet she wanted to venture out and be her own woman but she was too scared. Excuse me but wtf? It's either you do or you don't. Another thing is that they didn't really have much of a connection in my opinion. Alle didn't fight for her independence. She didn't go after her happiness, she gave up too easily. That annoyed me. She begged Ethan to stay with her but she still didn't get her crap together. Ethan wasn't really an alpha male in my opinion. In some parts he was but other parts eh, not so much. An okay read. I wouldn't read it again though. Another thing is that this book reminded me a little of the movie The Notebook.

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. I hate cheaters.... By Kindle Customer Well I have to say that the authors is very skilled at telling a story because normally when there is cheating in a romance I skip it altogether. I don't care what happened or who cheated first, I just hate cheaters. For most of this book the lead character was cheating on her man. I don't have any respect, or compassion for Alle. Ethan I felt sorry for at first but he was cheating right alone with her. About half way through I started to get tired of the whole thing but I really wanted to know how it ends.. so I kept on reading and I was not really to happy with the ending but whatever. I will read more of this author work but I won't be recommending this book

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Editing, Editing, Editing! By Bea This story could have been better if the editing was solid. Too many incorrect words, misplaced punctuation, etc. It's difficult to enjoy a book if you have to keep re-reading a sentence to figure out what's going on.Too bad.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Steamy promising start to a new continuing series! By Book Babe 4.75 Stars“Rachel-who-is-moving” is a good girl cellist leaving Chicago for a job with the Boston Symphony. “Dylan-with-no-last-name” is the tattooed hottie she meets at a bar in her final days in town. He emanates that bad boy vibe, and he’s exactly what Rachel’s friend thinks she needs in her regimented, no thrills lifestyle.“Something tells me he knows exactly how to make things fit. And style isn’t really an issue when no one’s wearing clothes.”Mesmerized by his presence, Rachel takes a chance and takes Dylan home. And then things turn steamy, their already simmering chemistry burning hot.“‛Pretty soon, I’m the one who’s going to be giving the orders….Don’t worry so much, Rachel. I might not be nice, but you’re going to like it. I promise.’”It’s about stepping out of your comfort zone, finding similarities where appearances highlight only differences. For a shorter read, this one really packs the punch both with the steamy scenes sprinkled with hints of romance and character development that endears you to both characters. There’s clearly more below the surface for both of them. Told via Rachel’s first person point of view, Dylan is a bit of a mystery man to Rachel and though readers should be able to connect the dots, it’s a lot of fun to see where this is going. I’m definitely looking forward to part 2.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. 4 Hearts for Rachel & Dylan By Romance Between The Sheets Please note this review may contain spoilers.BADASS IN MY BED is the debut novel from Rae Lynn Blaise and be warned, it is a serial novella. I’m not sure how many books will be in this series, but currently books 2 and 3 are available for pre-order and are available for free with Kindle Unlimited, which is good because I personally think that paying $2.99 for a novella is too much.Rachel is out with her best friend for their last girl’s night before she moves to Boston to take her place with the Boston Symphony. Before she goes, her friend tries to convince her to live a little, to maybe have some fun with the hot tattooed guy she can’t keep her eyes off of. With some meddling from her friend, she winds up at Dylan’s table and does something crazy and out of character; she takes Dylan home where he gives her a night she will never forget. But Dylan is so enamoured with her that one night isn’t enough and he comes back for not only a second night, but also a date.Right from the start, you know that Dylan is hiding something about who he is and that he likes that Rachel doesn’t know who he is. He’s very perceptive and surprises Rachel with how well he can read her and what makes her tick. There’s definitely a spark between the two of them, which I think surprises them both considering she’s your prim and proper good girl while he’s your typical tattooed bad boy. These two couldn’t be more opposite yet they connect on more than just a physical level. The novella doesn’t really end with a cliffhanger, but it does end with Rachel finding out who Dylan is while on her flight to Boston. What she’ll do with this information will hopefully come out in book 2.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Chance Encounter By The Fairest of All Book Reviews A chance encounter of complete opposites.A way to let go of a single minded focus for just one night. An attraction that goes beyond the bedroom but due to the rules of their time together and the directions their lives are taking them in, that’s all it can be. Or is it?Rachel is a heroine who readers will be able to connect with on a number of levels. She’s always been about goals, completing one right after another and proving herself capable in the eyes of many but most importantly her father. Her ultimate goal has finally been obtained but one interaction with a Beautiful Tattooed Boy and she’s questioning her choices, her focus, her drive for success when it’s all that’s made up her life for so long.Dylan is the tall, dark, and handsome stranger who offers to be Rachel’s distraction, but it also seems like he’s hiding himself. Readers don’t learn too much about this bada**, and I, for one, can’t wait to learn more and see where Rachel and Dylan’s connection takes them despite the opposite directions they seem to be heading.Rachel and Dylan’s story will have readers questioning if being happy enough is sufficient or if stepping outside of your carefully constructed box and risking everything for a chance encounter with a man who is your complete opposite but makes you feel more alive than ever before is worth more than a distraction.A complimentary copy was provided in exchange for an honest review.4 poison apples

Some of the art work as far as Lara was Concerned wasn't too flattering. I am discussing certain angles of Lara during times of distress or when she's listening to specific conversations. Other than that it was a wonderful romp through the older type story for Lara Croft. Her appearance and disposition was great sigh of relief for me as a classic fan this was an enjoyable chapter in this new series of comics that I enjoyed far more than any of the reboot comics. I can see I am going to have fun reading these and look forward to the next installment in this wonderful series! I am a happy fan to know that they have resurrected in my opinion a far more agreeable and enjoyable Croft for this comic series bravo!

Best Ebook Online A Colder War, by Charles Cumming

Internationally acclaimed as "a premier writer of espionage thrillers" (USA Today), Charles Cumming is "among the most skillful spy novelists" (Washington Post) and "a worthy successor to the masters…like John le Carré and Len Deighton" (Chicago Sun-Times). Now, with A COLDER WAR, Cumming returns with MI6 agent Tom Kell (A Foreign Country), in a tour de force that will dazzle readers and critics alike.

A top-ranking Iranian military official is blown up while trying to defect to the West. An investigative journalist is arrested and imprisoned for writing an article critical of the Turkish government. An Iranian nuclear scientist is assassinated on the streets of Tehran. These three incidents, seemingly unrelated, have one crucial link. Each of the three had been recently recruited by Western intelligence, before being removed or killed.

Then Paul Wallinger, MI6's most senior agent in Turkey, dies in a puzzling plane crash. Fearing the worst, MI6 bypasses the usual protocol and brings disgraced agent Tom Kell in from the cold to investigate. Kell soon discovers what Wallinger had already begun to suspect―that there's a mole somewhere in the Western intelligence, a traitor who has been systematically sabotaging scores of joint intelligence operations in the Middle East.

A Colder War, by Charles Cumming

From Booklist *Starred Review* Over several novels, Cumming has established himself, along with Olen Steinhauer, as one of the best of today’s old-school espionage novelists. His latest, a follow-up to A Foreign Country (2012), finds disgraced agent Tom Kell still out in the cold after being scapegoated in the wake of a torture scandal. That changes quickly when his former colleague, Amanda Levene, now head of MI6, drafts Kell to find out whether the airplane crash that killed her lover, Paul Wallinger, head of station in Turkey, was an accident or the work of a suspected mole. Or moles—Wallinger himself may have been a traitor driven to suicide. We’re in Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy territory here, of course, but there are also hints of later le Carré, as Kell falls in love with Rachel Wallinger, Paul’s daughter, and quickly finds himself in that treacherous demilitarized zone between the personal and the political. Cumming is a master at describing the details of spy tradecraft, from electronic wizardry to tailing a suspect on the street, and one of the great pleasures of this novel is watching Kell and his team do their work. But is the price of doing that work—and living the clandestine life it requires—too high? Are ideals as deadly as bombs? Those are the fundamental questions of the spy novel, and Cumming asks them with great eloquence, revealing a contemporary twist or two in the way his characters frame their uncertain answers, but coming round in the end to the abiding melancholy that still shrouds all but the most heartless of spies. Superb espionage fiction in the grand tradition. --Bill Ott

It is well written and paced with a pretty decent plot and a good sense of place. The plot has been well summarized elsewhere on this page, but it involves a disgraced British spy, Thomas Kell, being brought back into the Intelligence fold to help to investigate some suspicious deaths of agents and to find the source of apparent leaks of information. We get a classic mole-hunt set in London and Turkey, and it's pretty well done. It is at its best when there is real tradecraft being described – surveillance, counter-surveillance, interpretation of detail in evidence and so on – which has led to comparisons with John le Carré.Such comparisons are premature, to say the least. The story is a perfectly decent one, but neither the plot nor the characters have anything like the depth and subtlety of le Carré. The, to me, rather overblown aspects of Kell's emotional life and the introduction of a somewhat cliché-ed This Time It's Personal element would have no place in a le Carré novel, for example. It's noticeable, too, that Cumming has a penchant for male lead characters of roughly his own forty-something age and for sensationally beautiful, sexy, intelligent and significantly younger women to fall in love - and lust - with them (see also Trinity Six, for example). Bless! I wouldn't dream of accusing him of using his books for wish-fulfilment, of course, but I do find it all a little credibility-stretching.I don't want to carp too much. I think we shouldn't get ahead of ourselves with the Great Spy Novel stuff, but I enjoyed the book. I found it very readable and in parts very exciting. Overall, I thought it was a very decent, engrossing spy thriller which would make an excellent holiday read.

His writing is intelligent and assured; his characters are realistic, and the Turkish and Ukrainian settings interesting.I have read a couple of his earlier novels and enjoyed both of them, and I enjoyed about three-quarters of this one. At almost four-hundred pages, it is far too long. It's like trying to sit through a James Bond movie of five or six hours duration. There is too much dialogue, too much explaining, too much detail. I got bored with it and had to skim the last eighty or so pages just to get through it. What's the deal with so many thriller writers churning out Dickens-length novels?

14 of 16 people found the following review helpful. AS GOOD AS IT GETS By David Keymer A mole is spilling the goods on the Middle Eastern operations of the British and American secret services. Two defectors are dead as a result. An MI6 agent of MI6 is too though it’s not clear if his death was an accident or not. Whatever the case, the timing is too coincidental to ignore. The head of MI6, “C”, brings disgraced agent Tom Kell out of retirement to find the mole. She’s using him because the dead MI6 agent was her lover --she has to play her cards close to the vest. Besides, she doesn’t trust her Cousins in the CIA not to screw it up if they get word and intervene with their big guns and little discretion. The plot premise isn’t unique. How many times have we read about the hunt for a mole inside a secret service in the West? But seldom is it done this well, making such a compelling read, as in this gripping spy thriller about Life In The Grey World. Cumming’s narration moves along with no drop in interest from Kell’s initial investigations until the final, pulse-stirring chase. The ending is bitter-sweet –more bitter than sweet, but that too matches the world Cummings has described: a world where honesty and loyalty have little room to grow but rather, suspicion and betrayal are served up daily with the midday meal.Cumming’s is a masterful storyteller at both extremes. He is a master of the small details --how do you run a multi-person tail of a suspicious and wily foreign agent? how close dare you get to a suspect before he, or she, suspects you?—but of the large picture too, including –and this is a definite plus—empathy for his hero, who is a flawed but ultimately decent, feeling individual.A Colder War is a really fine specimen of the genre, on a par with the best of John LeCarre, Charles McCarry or Olen Steinhauer, and you can’t do any better than that.

The section on the author's childhood and family life was riveting, informative, and incredibly interesting. The later section on her diagnosis and subsequent thoughts and feelings about it give a great insight into a 'disorder' I previously did not have much knowledge of.I highly recommend this book for anyone who knows anyone at all with Aspergers, as well as anyone else simply as a great read!

When a scan at fourteen weeks clearly reveals a set of natural triplets Eddie and Gill's lives were about to be changed forever by their early arrival. The story follows the humorous and sometimes chaotic happenings when the triplets, with their powers of 'triplepathy' quickly learn how three heads put together can achieve far more mischief than one. It's all a matter of being one step ahead of them, but this is harder than ever imaginable, especially when they are joined by a little brother. Gill soon realises that her poor academic record could be the down fall in this most complex part of her education, as she struggles to study for 'A Masters in Motherhood,' awarded from the 'University of Life.' With Gill and Eddie's involvement in the equine world and love of the countryside, the triplets have a free, fun and varied early few years, which the story follows.

By mabelfrenchie Well I have laughed and smiled my way through this book in one long sitting! I just could not put it down. What an idyllic childhood these little boys enjoyed. What wonderful parents they have. Life did through a few curved balls in their direction and the way their parents dealt with the problems is a lesson to us all. An account of how family life should be.

Groo: The Hogs of Horder #2, by Mark Evanier

From Booklist The once-great land of Horder is facing rough times. King Hordes is greedy and blind to the plight of his people, who suffer while their economy languishes under unemployment and inflation. In fact, things seem to be rough everywhere Groo goes, and even though he doesn’t quite understand what the problem is, Groo tries to help. This, of course, leads to the usual levels of destruction; things get so bad Groo isn’t even sure what to make of the local “frays,” but he throws himself into them anyway. Sardonic and slapstick, the story tackles all measure of the world’s problems from the economy to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and while the political satire is thinly veiled, this wink-and-grin lampooning tells a joke that everyone is in on. Aragonés’ art maintains its usual flair for chaotic detail without tripping up the flow of the story, and this standout volume shows why he is such a legend in comics circles. --Tina Coleman

Art just gets better and better; plot is pretty funny, too By Sam Thursday Sergio Aragones' artwork is gorgeous and funny as always, and the storyline - which parallels the financial crisis - is make-you-think funny. It's not the straight-up slapstick readers of the original series have come to know and love, but it's just as amusing if you're willing to go along for the ride.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Season 8 #11, by Joss Whedon

From Publishers Weekly The newest incarnation of the Buffy comic, written by series creator Whedon, is effectively the new season of the TV series. It plunges right into the show's dense cosmology and doesn't bother to explain anything to neophytes. Regulars will love it, however. The Long Way Home establishes the season 8 status quo: demon-killing heroine Buffy Summers is now commanding an army of hundreds of Slayers (and her little sister, Dawn, has been turned into a giant by Whedon's favorite transformative force, sex). Still, there's some creepy unfinished business from the TV show to deal with, and the U.S. Army is coming after her, too. A shorter story, The Chain, concerns the bittersweet, truncated life of a Buffy look-alike sent underground as a decoy for the forces of evil. Jeanty, Owens and Lee's artwork, understandably, is in a very straightforward mainstream-comics style—the characters look as much as possible like the TV actors—although they manage a few interpretive flourishes, like a Cubist witch seen by one character in a fantasy sequence. The real draw, of course, is Whedon's writing. His dialogue is as snappy as ever, and his plots are hypercompressed and telegraphic. (Nov.) Like the sweetest hit for an ex-smoker By Melissa Meade I must admit that as a Buffy fan who hasn't read a comic since age 7 I was a skeptic...but a skeptic in serious withdrawal willing to slurp down just about any Buffy chum Joss flung my way (sorry fan-fictors but there's Payless and then there's Prada). This volume seriously delivers. I read it twice in 24 hours, once quickly to get the major points (who's back, who's bad, who's bedding who), and then again slowly to savor the dialogue and story line. It comes off as basically a two-hour, two-dimensional Buffy movie in what would naturally be a trilogy of films (ahh, only in my and James Marster's dreams I'm afraid). Artwork really pops, transitions are smooth and cinematic, and the trademark Buffy-speech humor is dead-on. Sure there are a few small holes in the storyline (like where a certain character mysteriously recovers from grotesque disfiguring brain surgery w/out a single panel's explanation). Ok, that's a big hole. And yes there are baby slayers with bad Euro trash accents to ignore. But let's chock it up to suspension of disbelief and ooh! look at Buffy she still has her shiny red axe thingy! This volume probably would be meaningless to anyone who had not watched all 7 seasons and memorized the lyrics to Once More with Feeling when they couldn't get a date to the prom, but who cares about them! Losers!

63 of 65 people found the following review helpful. A fanboy's dream come true By trashcanman Nobody loves his fans more than Joss Whedon. This is a man who once said he'd rather make something that 100 people NEED to see then something 1000 people WANT to see and the man works tirelessly and continuously to bring us the very best in sci-fi/horror/fantasy entertainment. So yeah, I'm a fan. "Buffy: Season 8" shoved off in spite of worthless television politics and Sarah Michelle Gellar's refusal to play the character (until her bank account bottoms out, anyway) by switching mediums entirely and making the official leap to the printed page. The transistion has been exemplary."The Long Way Home" picks up some time after the end of the 7th season. Buffy Summers is leading an army of awakened slayers in surgical strikes against demons worldwide. Instantly, the reader is greeted with a feeling of complete comfort in the old "Buffyverse"; the dialogue is so spot on you will hear the original actor's voices in your head as you read. Sly references to past events abound: Xander, still sporting his eyepatch, fancys himself a Nick Fury-type commander and fills the pages with geeky references, Dawn is suffering some very literal growing pains, Andrew makes us question his sexuality and continues pontificating at length about "Star Wars", etc; hardcore fans will not be let down. Villains with scores to settle return, including at least one you seriously never expected to see again. Each returning character is given the coolest possible introduction to the comic medium and if it possible to cheer while reading a book, you will. The art is more than a little bit endearing, stylish, and cool. And the covers! Good God, the covers! Each month I spend what seems like minutes on end admiring the jaw-dropping artwork that greets me before I can even turn a single page. I will boldly declare the cover art of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Season 8" to be the best of any comic I've ever seen. Long may it continue. The story is something much more epic than anyting that could realistically be portrayed on a television budget. The settings are varied and as cool as they come, the battles are large in scale, and the cast is expanded leading the series to become more of an ensemble than ever. Misleads (usually romantic) that make you gasp are dangled in front of your eyes and then expertly diverted in a way that will make you smile about being had. Well done, Mr. Whedon. The creatures are no longer limited to men in costumes and low-budget CG, the demons are large in size, and others are just odd, such as an underground colony of slug monsters and fairies. This adds yet more depth and possiblities to the story.Issues #1-4 chronicle the actual "Long Way Home" arc, while #5 is an excellent self-contained story about a slayer chosen to serve as one of Buffy's several doubles. It is arguably the strongest issue in spite of the fact that Buffy isn't even in it and the supporting cast only make token appearances. It's a real testament to Joss Wheson's great storytelling skills. And did I forget to mention the excellent humor that peppers each issue? Well, I guess that goes without saying, doesn't it?Even if you have never read a comic in your life, this is a great time to begin. "Buffy: Season 8" is off to a fantastic start and if you missedthe boat, thank God for trade paperbacks. If you are already a comic fan then you know what the potential here is and you can rest assured that the hype is warranted. Next stop: "Angel: Season 6".

39 of 43 people found the following review helpful. Season 8 is a hit in print By Tom Knapp Have you wondered what Buffy, Willow, Xander and Giles have been up to since Sunnydale imploded? Joss Whedon has the answers. Have you pondered the effect on the world of the sudden existence of countless powerful young women with Slayer powers? Joss knows, and he's willing to share. Has it occurred to you that someone -- or something -- might have survived in the rubble of Sunnydale? You might be surprised by that one.Did you think it was kind of lame when we learned in "Angel" that Buffy was off bopping in Italy with the powerful Immortal? She wasn't. Whedon handily explains that away -- without messing up the continuity even a bit."The Long Way Home" is the first story arc of the new series, and it takes us to the Scottish castle where Buffy hangs her hat as leader of a Slayer commando unit, where Xander acts as a new Watcher and ops coordinator, where Willow takes care of both mystical and technical affairs, and where Dawn -- still kind of whiny, damn it -- parks her very, very, very large sneakers.Without giving too much away, I'll say that Buffy is hit with a magical assassination attempt and the American military takes an unfriendly view of the Slayer army, which strikes where and when it sees fit without respect to international boundaries. And, to round out the book, there's the very touching and well-imagined stand-alone tale about a very special Slayer with a very unique assignment.I was pretty sure that nothing would fill the large Buffy-shaped hole in my heart. I'm not sure a new comic series is as good as a new TV series or a string of big-budget films (hint, hint), but it does a far better job than I could have expected. With Joss at the helm, you know the story is good and the specific voices of his beloved characters sound exactly as they should. The art, by Georges Jeanty, falls just short of photorealism; it's beautiful stuff, well drawn and fluid, and the characters are instantly recognizable as the actors who portrayed them.Buffy the Comic Book has been hit-or-miss over the years. This new incarnation is a bullseye. I can only hope the creative team, led by Whedon, can maintain this outstanding level of quality.by Tom Knapp, Rambles.(net) editor

Once the plot got rolling and the characters lives twisted and turned, even upside down, I got a grip on everything and really enjoyed the book! Once again I highly recommend Phaedra Weldon's books.

By The Bookie Monster Nothing can shatter a man's dreams like finding out the super secret magical cloak mysteriously showing up on your doorstep wasn't actually meant for you...after you've bonded with it for life.Forget everything you think you know about heroes and villains. Phipps redefines the genre. The Rules of Supervillainy is wildly entertaining, delightfully original, and will make readers everywhere yearn to don spandex and join the crusade.Gary is just a regular guy, with with problems. Money woes, a checkered family past, and a whole lot of resentment plague the unemployed protagonist until a superheroes death finds him in possession of the deceased's magical cloak. Don't get confused, though. This cloak is so much more than Harry Potter's cloak of invisibility. This cloak imbues the wearer with some powerful tools to add to his arsenal of supervillainy. Unfortunately for Gary, he finds out the hard way that super strength is not one of its benefits. The cloak, a character all on its own, is a snarky addition to the story. Besides giving Gary superpowers, it's a wealth of knowledge, outside of Judaism, of course. As any comic book fan will tell you, no supervillain is complete without his henchmen, and in this case, henchwench. I was so nervous to read this book. I know Charles Phipps. He's read my own books and has made it no secret that he's a superfan of the Time of Death series (much appreciated Charles!). This is first book I've ever read in the superhero genre. To say that it's way out of my comfort zone would be an understatement. So, I was apprehensive going into the read that I would not be an appropriate target audience for the content. I underestimated Charles's ability to spin an entertaining tale, and for that, I'm a bit ashamed of my original apprehension.I couldn't begin count the number of times I found myself chuckling out loud at the witty banter flying back and forth between Gary, the cloak, his wife, and the plethora of other superheroes/villains and antiheroes. Not to mention his inner dialogue, which was just as enjoyable. As its title would suggest, The Rules of Supervillainy reads almost like a manual for becoming Super. Chapter subheadings sets the readers anticipation of what's to come. With every new chapter I found myself envisioning how it set the scene in graphic form. Much like the movie, Kickass, I could see this going to the big screen.Supervillains have real families with real problems; ex-wives, the struggles of raising teenage kids, college loans, and the ever-important task of keeping their wives happy. Merciless, Gary's moniker of choice for his alter ego, is married to Mandy. It's fun to witness the progression of their marriage during Gary's transformation into Merciless and even more fun as she reveals hidden parts of her past to Gary for the first time. Like Bruce Wayne's dark spiral to becoming Batman, Gary's past defines him and drives his yearning to become a supervillain. What's great about this book is that there's no long buildup to explain how the Supers come to be. It's a world where people have powers, objects of power exist, and the war waged between good and evil is prevalent. Phipps doesn't pussyfoot around. Instead, he dives in with the (accurate) assumption that readers will accept the reality he's penned. I like that boldness, and to his credit, even with a nonbeliever like me, it was a successful risk, and one that paid in dividends. Because, let's get real, if I had to read chapters of fluff just to lead up to the meat and potatoes, It'd likely have been yawn central. It's also worth mentioning that this is the most impeccably edited book I have ever read. Normally I'd find at least minor typos missed, like it instead of if, but there was absolutely nothing I could find.Let me close with this. It was such a joy to find my name among those receiving thanks in the book's acknowledgments. Not only because I respect Charles as a writer, and friend, but also because my name is inside a book that's sure to become a smash hit. I've always known he was a hugely talented writer, but I never realized just how funny he was. Though, in hindsight, the fact that he enjoys the "poopy" humor in my books should have been my first clue. I never turn notifications off on my phone, but while reading, I did! I was so into the story I didn't want any interruptions. If that isn't a testament to The Rules of Supervillainy's awesomeness, I don't know what is.

Live in a city frequently rampaged by costumed crazies and dashing do-gooders? Check? Got snark—set to max? Check-itty, check! Snappy supervillain name…a WIP. Seeking gainful employment to fight off accumulating debt? That’s why robbing a bank is a good idea! From page one, Gary Karkofsky, a former bank teller turned criminal opportunist jumps—well, levitates—into action! Enhanced by the late Nightwalker’s cloak, Gary must stop the Malt Shop Gang from stealing his score. What’s worse, if Gary manages to take these villains down, he still has to go home to his wife and have that “Guess what, honey? I’m a supervillain” talk. That’s okay, Mandy is rational and more than capable of handling her husband’s new “life” choice. Deep down, the story is about the characters and their relationships. That’s what drew me into this book. Peel away the rich world building (Superpedia, yes!!), the amusing banter, the insane situations Gary finds himself in, and you have a conflicted man who loves his wife! No, Supervillainy is not a mushy love story, but there are layers of complexity that make these over-the-top core characters breathe. The other characters strut across the pages quite memorably. Cloak was a riot. His story arc developed nicely throughout the book, and even surprised me a few times. Henchperson Cindy, a.k.a Red Riding Hood, would give Harley Quinn a run for her money any day! I loved how Cindy arrived at her villainess name. Diabloman. He was my second favorite character, next to Gary. The whole chapter at the Night Tower! Actually, any chapter with him in it! The superhero and villain names were chuckle-worthy in their own right. The story’s pacing moved rapidly. Zombies, demi-gods, anti-heroes, and a half dozen other horrific monsters kept Gary and company busy and the scenes flying. Several boss battles lent an appropriate “epic proportions” feel to round off the book.Charles Phipps packs plenty of humor, wit, and action into this quick read. I laughed, I cheered, but most importantly, I turned pages! The chapter subheadings were humorous and built anticipation for what was to come. Micro fiction at it’s best! More books should do this!Overall, I enjoyed The Rules of Supervillainy and look forward to reading the next in this series. Count me in!

This is humorous only because I read Marvel, DC and Image comics when I was younger.I also find I'm a fan of the morally ambiguous protagonist, which Mr Phipps had obviously mastered. Gary is definitely supervillain as he states repeatedly. He has no problems with killing, well at least not killing certain villains and anti-heroes. He also has no problem with theft, as you find out very quickly in the first chapter. The characters are all well developed with proper back story, as any comic book fan will appreciate. I particularly love the relationship between Gary and his wife from the moment he tells her about his supervillain intentions. From Gary's treatment of his henchman and henchwench, to his constant hilarious dialog with the cloak, I could not stop laughing and cheering him. Minor revelations make for some funny moments as well.I can't wait for the next one.

“You do know you’re trespassing, right?” “I’m not trespassing.” He quirked one eyebrow, the challenge clear. Then he looked pointedly at my chest again. I crossed my arms. “My mother is married to the owner of this ranch.” His eyes widened. “Is she? How nice for you.” With a cocky grin, he tossed my shirt to me, but didn’t look away. “I’m crushed you don’t remember me, Sis.”

It was one of the most humiliating moments of my life. It was supposed to be private here, but I’d been caught sunbathing nude. The hot cowboy got a much better look at me than I got at him, but it didn’t matter anyway. He was off-limits. I’d just met my stepbrother after ten years of avoiding the hateful brat. During which, I guess we both grew up. Bothered is Part 1 of Irrationally His, a novel presented as a 5-part serial. Recommended for mature audiences 18+ due to sexual content. 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Brilliant New Serial! By Holly @ Page To Page Reviews I received a free copy for an honest reviewAfter a stunning debut serial from Jessa I was really looking forward to this new serial – especially as it’s got hot cowboys in it!After Chelsea’s Mum re-married and moved to a ranch with her new husband and step-son, Chelsea stayed with her Dad and her friends in the city. 10 years later she’s visiting the ranch for their wedding anniversary, expecting ranch hands and rodeos but not her gorgeous stepbrother.Thinking she was alone at the ranch she takes a risk and decides to sunbathe with her top off – she didn’t count on falling asleep though! When she’s caught by a handsome cowboy she was mortified but nothing could be worse after she finds out he’s her step-brother. Now faced with a summer spent with her sexy as hell stepbrother, whose not only completely off limits but has also seen her practically naked, her summer just became a whole lot more complicated. Will she be able to stay away? This is a fantastic start to the series – Travis promises to be one HOT cowboy! A really captivating story, smoking hot scenes and great character chemistry – a new serial not to be missed!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Just enough to make you want more By E. Maynard Many thanks to Jessa Jacobs, who provided me a free copy of Bothered in exchange for my honest review.Following up on the rousing success of Jessa’s previous serial, Full Tilt Billionaire, comes a new serial: Irrationally His. This is a stepbrother romance, and also a five part serial. One disclaimer, for those who may be squicked by the term “stepbrother romance”: these are not children who were raised together from a young age. There is virtually no familial relationship between them, other than the fact that her mom married his dad back when they both were teenagers. They spent one summer living in the same house, and have not seen each other since. So there is no squick to be had here, unless you’re just looking for a reason to squick.Chelsea is a down on her luck artist, not long out of college. She has travelled to Montana to her mom and stepdad’s ranch, because they are having a huge week long celebration for their 10th anniversary. Chelsea is hoping that she can stay with them for awhile, as she has lost her job, and therefore her apartment because she couldn’t pay the rent. The book opens with her sunbathing topless in a peaceful, sun drenched field. She’s fallen asleep in the field when she is awakened by Travis, her stepbrother. He recognized her, after having spent several minutes admiring her chest. She doesn’t recognize him until he tells her who he is. She’s humiliated and enraged, of course, but also immediately attracted to him, despite her brain screaming at her that he’s her stepbrother, and therefore off limits. For his part, Travis is interested as well, amused at her anger and attracted to the woman she has matured into when all he remembered of her was an annoying teenager. He gives her a lift on his horse back to the ranch, because the other ranch hands were driving cattle to that field . When she returns to the house she calls her BFF Cosy (Cosette) and tells her all about it, and how embarrassed/turned on she was. Cosy tells her to make like Meg White, and bang that boy like a drum. Chelsea is hung up on the the whole “Ew, no, he’s my stepbrother” thing. Travis has no qualms about that at all - “taboo” is not a problem for him. They snark at each other in each successive meeting, the tension building to a fever pitch. They both worry about what impact an affair between them would have on their parents, each in their own head. Jessa does a great job of emphasising that these two people are really complete strangers to each other, despite the small detail of them sharing a stepparent. The feeling of “I really shouldn’t be doing this” is strong as well, which only adds the the build up for Chelsea and Travis. When they finally boil over, it’s mind blowing for both of them. But where do they go from there? Will they risk the possible repercussions to continue their affair? Suddenly Chelsea is inspired to pick up her painting again, and I don’t think it’s because of the beautiful Montana landscape….

Travis is the stepbrother who loved to pick on his stepsister Chelsea growing up. Travis is now wealthy from his own business but enjoys playing the bull riding circuit and spending time at his Father's ranch.Chelsea who is a struggling artist, has been invited back home to the ranch for her parents anniversary. She has no other place to live as she is without a job and can't afford rent on her own. Both have feelings for the other but had never acted upon them."Travis wasn't asking me, he was taking control, and for once I didn't care. This was how it felt to be with a real man, one who knew what he wanted and took it as if it were is due. If felt like danger and glory, all at once.""I was getting damn tired of being called a bastard.... What was wrong with this girl? She downplayed her looks, hid her talent, and apparently spent her life going from s*** job to s*** job...""The pain of having my brain ripped in two by conflicting needs and desires..."Jessa writes beautifully; her characters have strengths and weaknesses and she captures their feelings extremely well. The taboo nature of their relationship is quite the rage in indie authors work in the present time. But this book was different than others I had read. It is fresh and inviting and I could not put it down once I started reading it.This book was gifted by the author for an honest review.

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. so I'll try to summarize my disappoint in this product as effectively as possible By Anonymous After reading The Lessons of Yesterday by Kelly Knorr, I was left wholly unsatisfied. The reasons are varying and perhaps too complex for a writer with such simplistic style to understand, so I'll try to summarize my disappoint in this product as effectively as possible.Five pages in, I grew frustrated with this book. Once I got past the choppy structure and ineloquent layout and made an effort to delve into this recollection of self-realization, I came to understand that these lessons from yesterday come from a hypocritical, uninspiring perspective. My poor review is based on a lack of substantive, thought-provoking substance set forth through the writing. The assumption on page 4 that luxuries are evil is left unsubstantiated and perhaps contradictory. Claiming that "money is obviously necessary" while the "want for wealth is not" sounds philosophical, until you break the statement down into an illogical, wordy mess of an observation. My biggest complaint lies on page 5, in which the author uses the phrase "Catholic love". If you're aiming to convince readers that your purpose is to open their minds and usher them towards a more bountiful lifestyle, limiting life's most basic psychological desire down to one demographic of people is the least convincing way to do so.When examining the piece as a whole, it's a literary disaster that provides nearly no insight into how an egalitarian life should pan out. I don't recommend it, as its claim to help you see both the "beautifies and the tragedies of life" is only true in the sense that you're pulled into the tragedy that is this lackluster take on our existence.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Recommended By Kieran Kelly clearly has a great love for life and writing and in each section of this book there is a thoughtful reflection on her own experiences in life. Her writing is a breath of fresh air in the digital age, as she takes a step back and tells her readers to take a moment to look at the real beauty in the world around you and enjoy the best parts of life. Most importantly here is a young writer who I can tell recognises the endless possibilities of writing and wants to use each word to inspire those who read her work.

Five stars.
