In the tradition of Elizabeth George, Louise Penny, and P. D. James, New York Times bestselling author Deborah Crombie delivers a powerful tale of intrigue, betrayal, and lies that will plunge married London detectives Duncan Kincaid and Gemma James into the unspeakable darkness that lies at the heart of murder.
Recently transferred to the London borough of Camden from Scotland Yard headquarters, Superintendent Duncan Kincaid and his new murder investigation team are called to a deadly bombing at historic St. Pancras Station. By fortunate coincidence, Melody Talbot, Gemma's trusted colleague, witnesses the explosion. The victim was taking part in an organized protest, yet the other group members swear the young man only meant to set off a smoke bomb. As Kincaid begins to gather the facts, he finds every piece of the puzzle yields an unexpected pattern, including the disappearance of a mysterious bystander.
The bombing isn't the only mystery troubling Kincaid. He's still questioning the reasons behind his transfer, and when his former boss—who's been avoiding him—is attacked, those suspicions deepen. With the help of his former sergeant, Doug Cullen, Melody Talbot, and Gemma, Kincaid begins to untangle the truth. But what he discovers will leave him questioning his belief in the job that has shaped his life and his values—and remind him just how vulnerable his precious family is.

To Dwell in Darkness: A Novel (Duncan Kincaid/Gemma James Novels), by Deborah Crombie Review “enriched by a wealth of detail about St. Pancras’ history and architecture that would do Margaret Truman proud.” (Kirkus)“The unmasking of the killer was chilling but Ms. Crombie’s setup for the next book is just as cold… TO DWELL IN DARKNESS is a fitting title to the mystery of murder and for what may be happening next.” (Romance Junkies)“As always, the characters have rich personal lives, and their interaction makes the story more nuanced and compelling.” (Contra Costa Times)

By Reader To Reader Detective Superintendent Duncan Kincaid is not at all pleased with his transfer from Scotland Yard to a regional major-incidents team in nearby Holborn, but he has little time to reflect on the change when a horrific incident at St Pancras train station occurs. Someone has set off a phosphorous hand-grenade in the crowded station, and Kincaid finds himself in the middle of an investigation once more. With an unidentifiable victim, a loosely organized group of protestors and not much more to go on, Kincaid sets about the routine of gathering, sorting and prioritizing information. Bits and pieces take solid form, but Kincaid is uneasy with the direction a key part of the enquiry is taking. Not knowing his new team well adds to his discomfort, and he turns to former co-workers for assistance, as well as his detective wife, Gemma. As the story unfolds, the plot winds its way to an unexpected conclusion, at least in terms of the direction Kincaid had thought things might go. All the dots are connected, I’s are dotted and t’s are crossed, but there is one unknown, one loose connection in the circuit that threatens to spark at any time. Kincaid can’t quite bridge that gap, but he knows who can….To Dwell in Darkness is a solid police procedural, warmed by glimpses into Kincaid and Gemma’s personal life as well as those of familiar supporting characters. The pacing of the plot is just wonderful – slower and more deliberate as the investigation begins, picking up pace as though rolling down a steep hill as the pieces all come together. A startling ending adds a frisson of anticipation for the next installment in this brilliant series – the next book can’t come soon enough! -- Joyce Greenfield, ReaderToReader.com

Bloody murders, baby kittens and what was in that envelope on Duncan's desk at the end of the last one By Sharon Isch Last time Crombie fans met with Scotland Yard's Detective Superintendent Duncan Kincaid and his wife Detective Inspector Gemma James in "The Sound of Broken Glass," they solved two virtually identical dead-in-their beds murders of men who apparently had only two things in common: Each was a lawyer and each had once lived in Prince Albert's "Crystal Palace" neighborhood. Case closed, Duncan returned to his office where he found a sealed envelope on his desk. Book ends before he opens it.Now the envelope is open, an infuriated Duncan has been booted out of Scotland Yard for reasons unknown and sent to Holborn Police Station to run a major-incident team. His first case there is a doozy. A group of protesters has decided to picket St. Pancras train station, while one of their number gets them added attention by tossing a smoke bomb. As it happens, Gemma's sidekick, Melody, (who you may remember fell in love with Andy, the guitar player we met in the last book) has come to the station to hear Andy's duo play there, arriving just in time to see that what's tossed is not a smoke bomb, it's a phosphorus grenade that sets on fire the man who set it off, but wasn't the man who was supposed to have set it off. Dead man down, the protesters run for their lives. Kinkaid and his team are on the way. Meanwhile, Gemma and her South London murder squad colleagues are investigating the rape and murder of a 12-year-old girl. This is the 16th in the series. Since these books dwell quite a lot on the Duncan and Gemma story (lots of home life, kids and baby kittens in this one),I recommend reading them in order, as best you can. Here's the list, from the beginning: A Share in Death...All Shall be Well...Leave the Grave Green... Mourn Not Your Dead...Dreaming of the Bones...Kissed a Sad Goodbye...A Finer End... And Justice There Is None...Now May You Weep...In a Dark House...Water Like a Stone...Where Memories Lie...Necessary as Blood...No Mark Upon Her...The Sound of Broken Glass...To Dwell in Darkness.

I waited a long time for this one, and as expected, it tumbled me right back into the darker side of London life, complete with all my loved characters plus a new one or two. Deborah Crombie has the English detective novel down pat, writing in the manner we have come to expect. While there is a story line about Duncan and Gemma that continues to evolve with each succeeding book, Crombie has the ability to keep it all fresh and interesting. This is indeed a page turner and includes a glimpse into a London world we can only know thru this writer. Her style is reminiscent of Agatha Christie, P.D. James and Ruth Rendell, not a bad club to be a member of.I don't include anything about the story line in my reviews, feel that always contains spoilers. I do like to speak to the art and craftsmanship of the writer, the ability to come up with a thumping good tale, well researched, well written, well edited (and well proof read.) If you prefer the literary style to the formulaic, you won't be disappointed with any of her books. I didn't read them in order, and each can stand alone. But for the truly great reading experience, go ahead and start at the beginning. Crombie belongs up there on your shelf with the rest of your favorites, I promise.
