Secrets of a Charmed Life is the story of how two young sisters survived World War II in London.

In 2015, at Stow-on-the-Wold in the English countryside, Kendra Van Zant, a history major, interviews 93 year old Isabel MacFarland. Kendra quickly realizes Isabel is not her subject's real name, nor is she 93. Isabel, a well-known artist, tells Kendra the tale of two young girls living in London just before the beginning, in the spring of 1940, of the strategic bombing campaign by the Germans against London that became known as the Blitz. The story centers on 15 year old, Emmy, and seven year old, Julia.

Emmy and Julia's mother, Anne, is a single mother working as a maid. She is able to care well for them, but she is often out of the house. Emmy has to be the responsible member of the household when it comes to caring for Julia.

This type of analysis can be used for a number of things. This is great if, for example, you are curious about the book but don't wish to read through 416 pages or if you need something to refresh your memory of the novel for school or a book club.Additionally, it is also very well-written and well edited. The writing of the author flows and it was easy to read. The summary also provides a valuable analysis of the characters as well as the themes in the novel. The analysis covers all elements of the plot and identifies things you could’ve missed while reading the actual book. There’s also a review of the characters.I truly enjoyed reading this. All in all, I would definitely recommend this to anyone.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. stellar review of a great novel By Amazon Customer Great review of a great book. This must has you on the edge of your seat, pulling you though the interview. The narrative is gripping, and the voice is compelling. This review of "Secrets of a Charmed Life" was a quick, fun read, one I really enjoyed. The analysis of deception and secrecy was very compelling. It was interesting to see how these three sisters each used deception, intentionally and unintentionally, and how these lies tied the mystery together.I wish there was more to say about the journalist in this review, but obviously they couldn't fit everything in. I loved this review and recommend it for everyone.

By Anne Mitchell I have read several books recently dealing with the World War II and I think they have been an excellent reminder of the tragic incidents that happened to those innocent people who became victims of Hitler and his obsession for power. I was in my early teens during the 2nd World War. I watched my grandfather change the pins around on a map(to try to keep track of one son and 5 sons-in-law) each evening as he listened to the news on his radio. On the other side of the family two uncles and several cousins were also in the service. As they turned 18 some of the boys dropped out of school to volunteer before they were drafted. Our school scoured all the farms in the county for discarded machinery for recycling, saved all the foil on our gum wrappers and rolled it into balls, bought war bonds and did all we could to help boost the moral of "our" soldiers. Everyone did all they could to support our military in any way possible. I wrote to all family members in the service to keep them informed on family and community news and they wrote back. Shoes, sugar, coffee, gas, tires, and many other items were rationed. It took months to a year or two to get a new car or truck. The war was real here. Many of our fine young men did not return home after the war. WE WERE A VERY PATRIOTIC NATION AT THAT TIME AND I HOPE THAT THE MANY WHO HAVE CHOSEN TO LIVE IN THIS NATION WOULD RISE TO HELP PROTECT IT IF THE NEED EVER ROSE AGAIN. GOD BLESS AMERICA AND ALL OTHER NATIONS THAT WE MAY LIVE TOGETHER PEACEFULLY.

About the Author John’s most recent book, Clowns, came out 39 years ago, so he figured it was high time for another. Yes, he really does have a Ph.D (drama, NYU) —which will no doubt come as a surprise to some of his friends— as well as an NEH fellowship and a Fulbright. He grew up in New York City’s Greenwich Village, where he still lives, and had his first exposure to laugh-so-hard-it-hurts comedy when he saw Danny Kaye on the big screen, probably in The Court Jester (1955). A few days after his 7th birthday he made his live television debut in a comedy sketch with Red Skelton and Jackie Gleason on The Red Skelton Show. He subsequently acted in dozens of television shows and commercials, working alongside such names as Gary Moore, Julie Andrews, Kaye Ballard, Alice Ghostley, Edie Adams, Myrna Loy, Claudette Colbert, Robert Preston, Tab Hunter, Sid Caesar, Ed Wynn, Claude Rains, Charlie Ruggles, Walter Slezak, Kate Smith, Shirley Booth, Sam Levenson, Margaret Hamilton, Patty Duke, and Joseph Papp. In his twenties he returned to show biz, this time somehow eking out a living in the world of clown and physical comedy, from the schools of Long Island to the circus sands of Saskatchewan, Saudi Arabia, and points in between, most of it with partner Fred Yockers. He was artistic director for the first two New York international clown-theatre festivals (1983, 1985) and has taught full-length physical comedy courses at Princeton University, Ohio University, and the Juilliard School, plus innumerable shorter workshops in numerous countries. Former students include Laura Linney, Jeanne Tripplehorn, Andre Braugher, Michael Hayden, and Michael Stuhlbarg. His latest research on physical comedy is to be found on his blog: physicalcomedy.blogspot.com. In other parallel lives he taught theatre, multimedia, and digital video in the Creative Arts & Technology program at Bloomfield College for 26 years, and spent many a summer working for the Open Society Institute doing media training for activists in hot spots across the globe.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. It did not disappoint. In fact By B. Robinson Having been a fan of the author's previous book, CLOWNS, I anticipated this book with relish. It did not disappoint. In fact, now I know what the author has been up to since 1976 and his previous release. He's been collecting cartoons and funny material. You can open this book to any page and laugh out loud. What I appreciate is that this is a truly educated look on humor without being intellectual. Sure, you may have to know a few things to get some of the jokes, but, as the author rightly points out, even he did not get all the jokes...and...there are over a thousand in here. In the bang for the buck department this humorous book has no parallel--it really stands alone as an exemplary softcover, beautifully designed and illustrated tome of value, humor, insight into the human condition and just plain old F U N! I bought one at the book opening for a member of the Marx family (as in The Marx Brothers) and I think this is winner enough material that the Marx's will howl. Bravo to author, compiler, designer, and ALL the cartoonists. I cannot think of a better holiday gift to brighten the day. I'll be buying more once I catch my breath and stop feeding my desire for just one more joke. I only wish Johnny Carson were alive to champion this great book. I think the Great Carsoni would love it. It's that good.

He asks the waiter for a coffee without cream, but the waiter says: "Sorry, monsieur, we don't have cream today, would you like your coffee without milk instead?" You don't need to get the Sartre joke to enjoy Towsen's book (which is good, since it's not in the book), but you would experience the nothingness that Sartre felt if you choose not to by this book. Sartre couldn't have his coffee without cream because the was no cream - but if you buy this book (Amazon has plenty) and have your morning coffee with a dose of laughter.

By David Carlyon Google defines surrealism as "a 20th-century avant-garde movement in art and literature that sought to release the creative potential of the unconscious mind, for example by the irrational juxtaposition of images." The author, irrationally juxtaposing images, released the creative potential of my unconscious mind! Now, Mr. Towsen, can you work your magic on my conscious mind? (Which, I believe, wrote this.)Sincerely,Sir Rial

The Mystic Tale: October, 2012: A reckless driver made a sudden U-turn and changed forever the lives of two people. Paul braked angrily, but before he could curse the other driver the swerving headlights illuminated a figure huddled high up in an enclosed stairwell. Paul pulled over to the curb. It was a nasty, wet night in Grand Rapids, and Ana Maria and one year old Terry were cold, hungry, and homeless. November 1st, 1984: The thunderous tones of Raphael, the huge bronze bell at the convent entrance, startled Sister Teresa into sudden wakefulness. As Sister Teresa tugged open the heavy oak door of the convent, a darkened car in the convent driveway started up suddenly and drove away. Sister was puzzled until she looked down and saw a tiny bundle. Once inside she found a tiny baby only hours old. As Sister held the newborn, a powerful sensation swept over her that caused her to reach out to a table for support. Thereafter, Ana Maria and Sister Teresa would be linked in a mystical bond for the rest of their lives. It would make a substantive difference in Ana Maria’s life. She would endure, with unlikely poise and self-possession, the loneliness, uncertainty, and even cruelty of an orphan in the foster care system. Indeed, she grew into a woman of radiant inner beauty, strength, and compelling presence. Only years later did she learn of her powerful bond with Sister Teresa. October, 2012: Ana Maria watched warily as Paul climbed the steps toward her. In answer to Paul’s offer of shelter, Ana Maria asked, “If Terry and I go with you do you expect me to sleep with you tonight?” Paul’s mouth fell open; no words came out.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. slowly comes to understand that the love of God and His grace is somehow at work ... By Vivienne A. McNeny A Mystic tale is a parable that teaches us that even under the most difficult circumstances God’s uncommon grace is always offered for us to receive and embrace if we choose. Ana Maria is the tool Ernest Keys St. Johns has employed in his debut novel to show that the Holy Spirit is present wherever we are and that very often we do not know, or understand its power. Everyone who encounters Ana Maria, as an infant onwards, slowly comes to understand that the love of God and His grace is somehow at work in their lives through knowing her. St Johns does not try to explain how impulses will guide our lives but he uses his characters to illustrate that if we act on them we can unwrap the gift of grace God is offering and by so doing tune into others who are similarly blessed. It is evident that St. Johns is sharing his belief that God is in charge as he chronicles a series of events that lead Ana Maria to her family while enfolding everyone who crosses her path with a love so pure it can only be described as coming directly from the Divine. His story takes the central theme of Christian mysticism present in the Anglo-Catholic tradition and places it centre stage in a world where acting on the unexplained, the mystical, is viewed with skepticism. St. Johns suggests that if we let compassion and care shape our relationships with others we will be drinking from the fountain of the imago Dei that resides within each of us and be blessed indeed.

The Perfect Reminder By SheilaB Coach The book offered examples and great tips to help people who want to improve their marriage and take it to a new level. Often you simply need to know that you're on the right track and doing things well. This book will offer that confirmation. The chapter on Forgiveness was especially beneficial as it helps you to reflect on whether you're a forgiving and a forgivable person. Strongly recommended for those couples just starting the journey together. Dr. Malec points out that a great relationship takes work, a reasonable reminder for those in the trenches planning a wedding.

By Tito Lover It's rare to find a book as practical as Dr. Malec's treatise on marriage in modern life. Too often books on the subject of marriage and making it work focus on abstract concepts and don't offer the practical guidance that Dr. Malec's book does. Sure reading a book like that may make you feel like you're doing something to improve your marriage but are you really? Are there concrete steps you and your partner can take to build on and improve your relationship in a typical marriage advice book? Maybe? If you look hard enough and can sort through all the fluff but let's be honest...Particularly helpful is how the book is written. Each chapter not only builds on the others but also stands on its own as well. Want to read the book cover to cover? Go for it. Want to pick up a section that interests you and find practical advice and tips for making things work? You can do that too.For example chapter 6 talks about "Money Matter" which I'm sure many of reading this review are nodding your head in agreement that money and how you handle it is a big issue in a marriage. I know I took a read (and re-read) thru that section! And each chapter ends with a list of key takeaways so if you "think" you may want to read a chapter but just want the highlights, you can skip to the end to pick up key concepts. Or use it as a refresher.Overall a well written book on marriage in today's hectic, confusing and overwhelming world. Well worth a read.

If you're a fan of epic adventures, sexy monstergirls, or harem anime/manga, this is the series for you. Be warned that this story is for mature readers due to explicit content. I.E. "sexy monstergirls". In the world of Eden a great evil has befallen mankind. Monsters of an unknown origin roam the lands, searching for those to use in populating their various races with. However, all the monsters in Eden are female, unable to give birth to any males for their kind. Now the men of humanity have become the target for these lustful creatures, and the women have taken up the blade in order to defend their race. It’s a dark time in the world and mankind is at war not only with itself but also the monsters that threaten to steal away all of their men. Yet there is one that believes not all of these creatures are truly evil, that some of them may actually be mankind’s key to survival in this world. And he’s willing to place his life, and virginty, on the line to prove it.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Good idea but repetitive. By Matt H The idea is good but the story got extremely repetitive. The females fight each other constantly with the same narration. The intros to each chapter are basically a rehash of something already stated but said a different way.

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Rocky path to success... By anonymous This is a general comment about the rewriting by the author, Alexander Gordon, whom several readers have complained over purchasing rewrites of existing material when they expected a continuation of the story. My understanding is that Kindle editions can be updated by the author at anytime after publication, a fact with which Mr. Gordon might be unaware. Whether this also is synchronized with a Kindle device upon demand or discovery, I'm not currently privy to. It would certainly seem an appropriate direction to head when simply adding corrections to spelling and grammar - or perhaps even correcting major continuity flaws in a story line. What is definitely inappropriate is not being up front with the potential purchaser of EXACTLY what the differences are between books, or "ACT's" in this case. Mr. Gordan provides a simple disclaimer, "For those who have previous editions of the Chronicles of Eden series, please make sure you are on the correct book as the Acts have been edited." Not particularly HELPFUL, Alexander, as we have no idea of what you've actually changed from ACT I going forward. All that aside, from what I've browsed through quickly, the dialogue seems well structured. I didn't catch dialogue starting out in the middle of a paragraph (a terrible thing to happen!) and it seemed to be written cleanly between characters. He might want to consider splitting off dialogue from descriptive text - paragraph-length, descriptive text following immediately after dialogue, I mean. Distracting as hell.Lots of dialogue (my son, the Journalist, hates dialogue) but hey, how else you gonna tell the story?I can't comment on the story line as I haven't actually read it yet, but I have another 25 days before Kindle-unlimited takes it away from me.I'd almost be tempted to rip the four volumes into a single, cohesive piece just for the sake of reading it in one chunk ... but that' s the author's job, not mine.On the whole (again, from what little I've scanned from the first two books) it looks like Mr. Gordon mayfind himself a following in this genre and I wish him all the luck in that regard.

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. but the excitement if (and how) he can avoid having some fun is only tiresome after the first two encounters By Markus Pristovsek The setting is a strange world, where there a exclusively female monsters out for the few human males for breeding. Only (huamn) woman stand between them. Well, this could have been an entertaining setting, as it is rather the reverse of the Damsel in Distress. However, long passages are either two females bickering against each other or trying to seduce (as if we are still in the 60ies). Also the male protagonist (who seeks out the monsters to make peace), does not seize the day but is somehow still convinced that he must stay virgin. Well, it may appeal to bible belt american, but the excitement if (and how) he can avoid having some fun is only tiresome after the first two encounters. So three stars for the setting and the story as a whole.

It was just an old bed — rather ordinary, bought for the spare room. Except that a hundred years earlier a woman called Rose, who practiced in the occult and dark magic, slept in it. Now Rose’s unhappy spirit comes as part of the deal — Rose’s angry ghost comes with the bed. That's not what you'd call a bargain. Angela and Nathan are a young couple, married only two years before, both of them professionals. They’re happy and in love, although the pressures of modern life can be challenging some days. The antique bed is just right for the spare room in their expensive apartment. Rose’s spirit doesn’t like happy marriages unless you’re prepared to wed the Devil. Sleeping in the bed promises erotic dreams with perfect lovers — more passionate and daring than your wife, more considerate and satisfying than your husband. Before long, the dreams are much better than reality. Three’s a crowd in any relationship even when one person is already dead. *** Readers please note: This story contains some strong sex scenes that aren’t common in my previous Horror Story releases.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. "Life is a game of power & pleasure & these men play to win!" By Marilyn Shoemaker I can't recall ever reading a Catherine George Presents but she'll be an auto buy for me from now on as I so enjoyed The Italian Count's Defiant Bride. It's about second chances and will absolutely tug at your heart strings. As a young teenager just fresh out of school with absolutely no experience, Alicia travels to Florence with her bestfriend Megan and literally bumps into Count Francesco da Luca a retired rugby player. Alicia is overwhelmed because she's been a fan of his for years. Francesco shows her the city and they quickly fall in love and marry. However, their wedding night is a disaster and she leaves and returns home and refuses his calls. Now years later, Francesco returns to Wales and is determined to see Alicia and bring her back to Italy under pretenses that his mother has left her something and the rest of the heirs cannot get their inheritance until she signs the papers. On top of everything else, Alicia has a problem with a man she adores like a brother and he's made advances so Francesco and Alicia decide to tell everyone they have reconciled. It's such a lovely and romantic love story, one you will definitely not want to miss.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Decent enough HP read By Susie The Italian Count's Defiant Bride by Catherine George was a decent enough HP read. In the past, I've always enjoyed Catherine George's HP books, but this one doesn't quite live up to her others. It felt like it dragged on too much. Francesco de Luca fell in love with Alicia Cross when he first set eyes on her. They end up getting married, but on their weeding night, things fall apart, and they never consummated their marriage. A little unbelievable here. Several years go by without either one of them seeking a divorce (Francesco was turned away by her mother), and now Alicia runs across Francesco at a rugby match. It informs her that she must come to his hometown because his late mother left her something in her will. Alicia agrees to go, and also agrees to play the part of his wife again because a close family friend of hers is trying to put the moves on her. Francesco is very laid-back, and takes his time trying to win over his wife again. Come on already!!! Let's get to the good part! There is a lot of dialogue between hero and heroine at the start, but when the romance heats up between them, the story takes a turn for the better! 4 stars!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Romantic but a bit pathetic and unrealistic By amui753 It was pathetic the reason Alicia ran away from her husband on their wedding night. They threw away their love and marriage because of a stupid miscommunication and misunderstanding that it is unbelievable and unrealistic. With the title, power and money I can't believe the hero can't find the heroine all those years. The way they fell in love and the way the hero courting the heroine again and the heroine falling in love again was romantic. That I have to give credit.

Annie McKay is loving her new job at Merson's bakery and cafe, loving the church she's attending and loving the people who have adopted her into their circle of friends. Life seems to be going great - even with the 3:45am alarm clock every day. At least, it's going great until she accidentally creates the town's newest delectable obsession leaving her crazy busy at work, running into old coworkers and then there's Zach, the attractive music pastor at church, who is always asking her out. It could be love, but that would open up a huge box from Annie's past that is best left locked up tight in the attic of her heart...and surely God wouldn't want her to be opening it back up. Right? With the help of good friends like Laurie Holbrook, a few hundred cinnamon rolls and a lot of prayer, Annie is about to discover that life isn't always taking the easy, smooth highway but that the back roads, though bumpy and painful, can also be full of fun.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Welcome to the Family By Suzanne Waltner First of all, let me say that I love Erynn Mangum’s books. They are some of the few books I love to pick up over and over again. Her characters are lovable and you just want to be a part of the groups of people. Whether I’m following Laurie Holbrook (now Palmer), Maya Davis, Paige Alder or Annie McKay, I feel like I’m with friends. And I’ve been looking forward to the conclusion of Annie’s story. So, before I get to that, let me put on my pet peeve hat here for a few seconds. There were several major content errors in this book (and within a matter of a few paragraphs span and from page 1). Annie mentions she got a call for a job last week and then a few paragraphs later she says she went on a six week road trip after she got the call. She talks about going to work the first day and using her key but then the second day her boss texts here and tells her where he hides the key (did he take the first key away?). Annie talks about getting to sleep in the next day because she’s off and she’s got church and then she says she’s got to get up and go to work. And for fans of the Lauren Holbrook series, there’s even more errors like this. Even from “Match Made” to “Bake Me a Match.” In “Match Made,” Zach likes seafood and Annie hates it. In “Bake me a Match,” it’s the opposite. Annie’s eating seafood and Zach is giving her a hard time about it.Ok, off my soap box now. While all of that was a little distracting, you can’t help but feel like you’re a part of this group when you’re reading these books. Laurie Holbrook’s ability to draw the characters into her circle extends beyond the page to the reader. Annie’s struggles with her new job and trying to reconcile her past with her present resounded with me. Lexi’s news made me tear up (and no, I’m not giving you more details. Spoilers). And even with all of the errors, I would still read another book in this series (or maybe another book in the other two series, hint, hint).

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. I loved this book By Maggie I loved this book! I could not stop reading it, and finished it in one day. Erynn has a way of making her characters so relatable on so many different levels -from the random, funny thoughts they have throughout their day to some of the bigger life struggles they face. I saw myself in Annie so many times throughout this book. I can't wait for her next book coming out this fall!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Fantastic Book! By Meghan The fifth book in the Lauren Holbrook series was a fantastic addition to the series. Bake Me A Match continued Annie's story with her new job as well as with her friendships with Laurie and the rest of her friends, and her relationship with Zach. It was such a fun read and I enjoyed all of the delicious baked goods (recipes should have been included : ) ) that Annie created. Erynn's characters are so relatable and I loved that she showed Annie's growth relationally and spiritually with lessons that the reader benefits from as well. It was a wonderful ending to a great series and is a book that I would definitely recommend. I am excited for her new book that is coming out in the Fall!

Cute Story and Colorful Pictures By Bookreader This is a cute children’s book about a little boy named Joey who didn’t like to pick up his things when he was finished playing with them. After slipping on Joey's toys, his Mam had decided that she'd had enough and grabbed her jar of magic dust. This magical dust would transform Joey’s room into Clutter Land.Joey loved playing in Clutter Land, except for the fact that he and his new friends kept tripping over his toys and one another. So Joey decided to clean up his room and free up some space for his new Clutter Land friends to play.I loved the colorful drawings in this book and the clever way that the author used to teach children the importance of cleaning up their toys.I read this book using my Kindle Unlimited Subscription

Denise McCabe, a talented children’s book author, takes you to a place where a child wants to clean up because they want to explore more. The images are visually engaging and age appropriate. The story is one that will immediately be relatable to children and adults. It may offer a teachable moment or it may become a bedtime story favorite. I believe it will end up being both. I highly recommend this to parents with small children.

It's hard trying to play in Clutter Land because the toys are always on the ground and in the way. Joey quickly learns why his mother wants him to pick up. This is a cute story with a good lesson. My three-year-old enjoyed the pictures.(I read this using my Kindle Unlimited subscription)

Writer’s block and a looming Christmas novel deadline have romance novelist, Sarah Jones, heading for the other side of the world on a whim. Niklas Toivonen offers cosy Lapland accommodation, but when his aging father falls ill, Niklas is called upon to step into his father's work clothes to make children happy. Red is quite his color. Fresh off the airplane, a visit to Santa sets Sarah’s muse into overdrive. The man in red is not only entertaining, he’s young—with gorgeous blue eyes. Much like her new landlord’s, she discovers. Santa and Niklas quickly become objects of research—for her novel, and her curiosity. Though she’s written countless happily-ever-afters, Sarah doubts she’ll ever enjoy her own. Niklas must find a way to show her how to leave the pain of her past behind, so she can find love and faith once more.

Nice Christmas Novella By Linda Rainey Poles apart is a Christmas novella by Marian Ueckermann. This novella takes a whimsical look at Santa plus we learn the true meaning of Christmas.Sarah is having writers block trying to write a Christmas story in sunnySouth Africa.Talking to her nephews they give her the idea to go to Lapland for Christmas. On an impulse she books a flight a flight to Finland and rents a cabin for three weeks. On arrival, she mets Niklas, owner of the cabins.Researching brings her to Santa's Village, beginning a series of adventures. some serious, some funnyI love the interaction between the characters and the funny scenes in the book. The most memorable, funny scene was a return trip to Santa's Village, where she pulled on Santa's beard to thinking he was Niklas. This a must read novella for Christmas. An advance copy was given to me in exchange for an honest review.

It was a delightful story following Sarah, a writer facing writer's block, that decides on the spur of the moment to travel to Lapland, home of Santa, to try to rekindle her writing. It was pure fun following her adventures there. The author has combined the magic of Santa and the true meaning of Christmas to write a story that is guaranteed to put the reader in the Christmas spirit. I definitely look forward to this writer's next book and seeing what part of the world she will take me to next.

Well written and filled with many Finnish facts and traditions. I smile thinking about the characters and their story. :) Just make sure you don't start it until you have time to read it through--good thing it's a novella--because I found it hard to set it down. With most of the story set in Lapland--home of Santa, it's perfect to get in the Holiday spirit. I was impressed how the author wove the wonder of the man in red with the hope and joy of the real CHRISTmas story.

Fun to see the old photographs. As for Larry Parker's review....considering you are a former boss maybe you should just stay out of it. That is purely poor behavior, when you haven't even read the book.
