By Lisa Ahlstedt Little Miss Overshare is so excited about every little thing that happens in her life that she's sure you'll want to hear about it, too. It doesn't matter if you are a long-suffering roommate, co-workers in a professional setting, or strangers asking directions, Little Miss Overshare will gladly and openly provide details of her life that no one wants to hear. Not that this slows her down at all!Little Miss Overshare is a parody in a series of books by the author Dan Zevin. Some other titles include Mr. Selfie and Mr. Humblebrag. While each small book no doubt reveals characters that we all encounter on a daily basis, for sheer self-absorption and cluelessness, it would be hard to top Little Miss Overshare.The book is very tiny, only about 5 inches square and 30 pages long. Each page of "oversharing" is accompanied by a drawing of an excited looking Little Miss Overshare along with pained looking recipients of her pronouncements. This book is done in the style of the Mr. Men and Little Miss series that were popular in the 1980s when I was a kid.This short paperback is about the rampant oversharing on social media, as well as in person. Little Miss Overshare talks about the day she was born, her bodily functions, her dietary preferences, family history and then some.She encounters many people throughout her day, and with each one she overshares a different type of information about herself. Later on in the book, we get to meet Mama Overshare and Papa Overshare, along with little sister Undershare.This book is just plain funny! This is part of the parody series which pokes fun at the old "Little Miss" and "Little Mr." books. I loved those books when I was growing up, and now my kids love getting them from the library. I had high hopes for this book because I also really enjoy parodies.Little Miss Overshare is a little too disclosing to her friends and perfect strangers. You may have guessed that by her name. She shares information from her bathroom habits to the issues she has had with her dry cleaner.I will say that although there are no outright vulgar words, the language and topics in the book are very crude. The reason I felt it was so funny is because with social media, I have found that people are oversharing more and more. So I think this is a timely book.Thank you to Blogging for Books for a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

This finishes up the Harbinger series and leads directly into Imperium. This is such a beautifully crafted story. By far one of the best stories I've ever read and by far my favorite Valiant title. If you for some reason only ever read one series independent of DC or Marvel, please read this! You won't regret it!

By Lorna If I had any thought that my five star rating of Storm in a Teacup was just a fluke, the second book put that theory to rest really quickly. Sometimes a follow up book disappoints, but this one didn’t for one second-with one minor exception. More about that later. Just a heads up, there will be spoilers from the first book in this review.Ayala Storme is a mediator in a world where demons have overrun whole parts of the world-literally. In this world, Alabama and Mississippi are just cesspools of demons and unfit for humans to live there. Ayala lives in Nashville, and works for the Summit, an agency that is tasked with ridding the world of demons. The Opry has already fallen victim to the demons, and it’s up to Ayala and others like her to make sure nothing else does. There’s a new sort of demon in the world now, and they are known as Shades. Shades are born of demons and human hosts-and born fully grown- so you know what happens to the hosts, and it’s not pretty. Ayala is part of a project to integrate the Shades into human life-not an easy feat since they are born ready to kill anything in their path. Gregor-her mentor- has signed off on the project and has helped implement it. To make things more interesting, Gregor has made her let one of them, Carrick, live in her home. Life gets even more complicated when a group of mediators decide they want the Shades to all die, and also want Alamea, the director of the Summit, to be assassinated.If you love strong, kick ass heroines, Ayala is your girl. She is determined, smart, fit, and lives to kill demons. As in literally lives-people like her have been taken at birth and trained for the job. Mediators are born with violet eyes so they can never be anything else, nor can they leave a specific area surrounding where they are born. It’s all part of the fascinating world building of this series. Alamea (the director of the Summit), has a much bigger part this time around. She is supposed to be the strongest of all the mediators, but as in any large organization, there is always people wanting to usurp her power. She’s pretty unflappable, intelligent and can kick butt with four inch heels on-and never break a sweat. Ayala’s friend and fellow mediator, Mira is smack in the middle of everything with Ayala this time as well. Lots of strong women are featured, always a good thing. Of course there is still the enigmatic Gregor, and also Carrick who is a mystery to Ayala even though they live together. Lots more side characters only add more to this story-some good, some bad.Describe this book in one word? ACTION. And plenty of it. This is definitely an urban fantasy and this time around romance takes a big leap to the back burner and pretty much stays there. And that’s the one exception that disappointed. A certain love interest was such a big part of the first book that I really missed him in this book. Hopefully he will be back in the next installment.I think this is my favorite new series, and that’s taking nothing away from my old favorites. It was less than a day’s read for me because I pretty much read non-stop. Great main character, fascinating world building, action, thriller aspects, and a mystery, just added up to a five star read for me. Top that off with great secondary characters, snark and wonderful writing, and if I could give it more stars I would. Highly recommended to all adult urban fantasy readers!And one more thing, if you don’t come away wanting to adopt a bunny, I would be very surprised!(RabidReads.com)

Everything I loved about STORM IN A TEACUP (the kick-ass heroine, the witty humor, fast-paced action sequences, and, of course, adorable bunnies) were all here in the second book. The shades are back at it in all their nekkidness, leaving butt prints all over Ayala's apartment, filling her bookshelves with romance novels, and there's that pesky trio of them that seems to be killing people in places attached to Ayala's life. And let's not forget the hell-holes opening in places around Nashville and pouring out hordes of demons at a time. But, as we learned in the first book, Ayala is a tough woman and is determined to fight through anything to figure out who is behind it all. And she does it with super awesome style and humor, with a few cuss words thrown in for good measure (cause who wouldn't cuss when faced with an entire group of ugly-ass demons?)I couldn't put this book down. It grabbed me from page one, and kept me hooked till the end and beyond (uh....when is the next one coming out? Cause I need it now). Blurring the lines of good versus evil, this book will keep you wondering who you can trust and where you would draw the line. And it will probably make you laugh while doing it.Oh, and did I mention the bunny adorableness? That, alone, is worth an extra star.

Couldn't put it down By mr dead Of the first book in this series i likened the story to Supernatural- the TV series, not for it being the same kind of thing as Supernatural but for something that fans of Supernatural are going to love. This second book develops that same kind of formula we find that makes the Supernatural series so great. There is a vision, a grand design for a greater story. Its like there is a huge event looming. So far each of the two books i have read are kind of episodic. They tie in to this longer vision of something big and terrible about to happen, but there are smaller stories entwined along the way to keep everyone happy. This one has those themes of family and betrayal, good vs evil and creatures that are some way in between caught up in the mess. its riveting stuff and as the title says, i couldn't put it down.Yet there is more to it that makes it great. That quality of story is here. you know the one you really want to read about, would be happy to read it again? Well, that. That kind of character that is both memorable and like-able, complex and interesting? This series has that too.If you see this review i would recommend picking up the first book and get reading because its such a hassle to be so far behind knowing you have a long way to get caught up. I have a feeling this one is going to keep on getting better and i don't want to be at book three when the fifth is available and neither should you

Lisa's down to earth conversation, wit, and biblical accuracy, makes this book one you will want to keep next to your nightstand as a reference. As a 30-something woman, who entered marriage with an 'independent' mindset, I had no idea how faulty my thinking was when compared to the Word of God. Since reading this book, my husband has commented on how I respond differently to his requests. He tells all his friends to have their wives read this book!

Welcome to incongruity-ville By David At times this felt like a story someone had written for ASSM in 1986 then dusted off, threw in a few references to modern life and published. A top of the line motocross bike for 2300 dollars? Not happening. A 2015 Yamaha YZ250F is $7950 on the interwebs. A college girl describing someone as a 'chauvinist'? C'mon, fight the patriarchy! But just so we know it's happening right now we get a running advertisement for Google Calendar.Poor Carmen. So broke and in debt she has to live with her sister in the bad part of town. How bad is it? Well, Carmen has a Hispanic last name... shudder. It's going to take her a year to save up $8000 for a legal judgement against her. Eventually, I guess, that wasn't working for the author so about halfway through the story she has an extra thousand dollars a month to move out. Meh, plot points, we don't need no stinking plot points.And Bonnie, well I guess Bonnie is perfect. In the paragraph describing her first appearance, no less than three times, 'perfect' is used to describe her attributes. Carmen doesn't like Bonnie-types, of course. Carmen is not a lesbian, of course (NOT being stressed by the author in the story). Except when Bonnie walks in Carmen is instantly gay curious and all about the Bonnie-types- Ummm?Poor Carmen is so confused. She confused when Bonnie leers at her and flirts with her and sucks Carmen's fingers in the bathroom after Carmen masturbates and forces their bodies together in the office. Does that mean Bonnie likes her? Carmen doesn't know. She knows she maybe wants to have that cool sex thing with Bonnie, but does Bonnie want her? That licking sticky fingers in the bathroom was just so vague. So confusing. When does Carmen figure out what Bonnie wants? When Bonnie helps Carmen distribute coffee in the office! So that's the global sign of lesbian lust I've been missing? Handing out coffee?There are also just enough typos, missing punctuation and improper cases to assure readers that this story had never seen a critical eye before publication.

Her stories read very much like a 30 minute TV series episode that gives you enticing characters that you're drawn to and drama that you can't turn away from. If you're looking for a quick read with some intense moments then this series and this author is for you.

With so many parenting books out there, it is hard to know which ones are worth taking the time to read, but this book was outstanding and one I will definitely recommend. Neither demonizing nor glorifying, Dr. Palladino instead takes a balanced look at the effect technology can have on developing children and provides concrete, actionable recommendations for maximizing potential benefits and while minimizing risk for harm. She makes a persuasive case for the critical need to develop the skill of voluntary (focused) attention in order to achieve academic, professional, and emotional successes in life. As I read this book, I found myself reflecting on some of my own habits surrounding technology and attention and making tweaks for myself as well as for my daughter that have led to positive changes. While her book references specific technology of today (Facebook, Snapchat, etc), the parenting concepts described will continue to be applicable even as technology continues to rapidly change. Her age-specific guidelines are something I am sure will be returning to as my daughter passes through the various stages. Highly recommended!

By Richard Freed Dr. Palladino does a wonderful job of mixing the latest brain research with compelling stories to help parents navigate a challenging digital age. She describes the profound differences between “bottom-up” involuntary attention and “top-down” voluntary attention, and why it’s vital that we help our kids develop the brain skill of “top-down” attention, especially in an age of always-on, distracting technologies. It’s clear from her wisdom and compassion that Dr. Palladino does real work with real children and families, as she understands the nuances of helping kids use tech primarily as a tool and not a toy. I highly recommend this amazing book.

Asking students to maintain focus for over 3 hours is like asking runners to run a marathon without training By Susan Cappetta I can’t say enough about Lucy Jo Palladino’s new book, Parentingin the Age of Attention Snatchers: A Step-By-Step Guide to Balancing YourChild’s Use of Technology. This book should be in the hands of every parent from infancy to young adulthood. To date, this is the most comprehensive and practical guide for parents on how to help their children from a very young age learn to use their technology as opposed to having it use them. When children practice voluntary attention in their use of technology, they are building the neural pathways for attention and focus. When they allow digital devices to “snatch” their attention, they are building the neural pathways for involuntary attention. Voluntary attention is intentional, requires effort, is hard to sustain, and builds the pre-frontal cortex of the brain. The center of memory, focus and comprehension, among other strengths needed for success. Involuntary attention is effortless, is hard to stop, and builds the sensory cortex of the brain creating more reactivity, among other qualities that inhibit focus.I teach teens about technology awareness and mindfulness, helping them understand that the mindless use of technology stimulates their sympathetic nervous system, whereas mindfulness and meditation stimulate their parasympathetic nervous system. Until I read Palladino’s book, I did not consider the other ways to help teens develop sustained attention and focus. Parenting in the Age of the Attention Snatchers not only provides a comprehensive definition of voluntary attention and its characteristics juxtaposed again involuntary attention, it also provides concrete suggestions and solutions to the growing difficulty children and teens have paying attention.I am working with teens preparing for the SAT and ACT college boards. I do not work with them on the academic aspect. Instead I help them train their brains to focus when they are studying, completing practice test, and taking the official tests. Asking students to maintain focus for over 3 hours is like asking runners to run a marathon without training. Lucy Jo’s outstanding book lays out the blueprint for instruction that I use.I need to reiterate. This book belongs in the hands of every parent from infancy to young adulthood. I must say that I am practicing some of her suggestions with my own process of attention and focus, with technology and without.
