Sam Holland asked U.S. Senator Nick Cappuano.Sam's normally unflappable husband looked somewhat flapped as he contemplated the wide array of choices. "How do we know which one to get?"There were spirals and shapes and something called "Easy," but Sam was certain it would be easy for everyone but her. "Maybe we should wait until Scotty gets here and let him pick out his favorite kind.""I want him to have what he likes in the house. How hard can it be?"Sam scanned the shelves once again and decided it could be quite hard. "You don't suppose there's this many choices for chicken nuggets too, do you?"The question seemed to suck the life out of Nick. Sam pushed the grocery cart aside and reached for him.Surprised by her rare public display of affection, Nick returned the embrace. "How am I going to convince him to come live with us permanently if I can't even handle mac 'n cheese for a three-week visit?""He's not going to care about the food, Nick. He cares about being with you.""And you."Sam took in the busy grocery store, overwhelmed by the task. Hunting down murderers was simple compared to this. "What're we even doing here?"Chuckling, Nick kissed her cheek and stepped back from her. If Scotty lives with us, he's our responsibility.""What do you think we need?""Someone to keep tabs on him when we're not home. To drive him to practice if we can't do it. To make sure the house isn't a wreck, the dry cleaning gets picked up, the bills get paid, there's dinner at night and some sort of schedule."Sam rolled her shoulders, already chafing at the thought of paying someone to boss her around. "I don't know about this…""Someone to buy the mac 'n cheese and chicken nuggets," he added with the charming smile that made her knees go weak. "You'd never have to step foot in a grocery store again.""That's playing dirty, Senator.""We need someone like Shelby." The tiny dynamo had put together their fairytale wedding in six short weeks. "Someone who can hold her own with you," he added, ducking as she took a playful swing at him. "Why does it have to be a her? I'm picturing a studly dude named Sven with muscles on top of his muscles."Over his shoulder, Nick rolled his eyes at her. "It doesn't have to be a her. I promise."Since his gorgeous wife was, in fact, often right, Nick chose to believe her. For the first time in days, the knot in his stomach loosened a bit. "It's so good to see you! I'm thrilled you came by. The dress should be in any time. Unfortunately, we caught Vera in the height of the spring wedding season.""Actually, we're not here about the dress, even though we appreciate your help in replacing it," Nick said, glancing at Sam. "We have a bit of an ulterior motive.""What's that?" Shelby asked."We're hoping you might know someone who'd be interested in a job.""What kind of job?""Basically, we need someone to run our lives." He explained about Scotty coming to stay with them, how they were hoping to adopt him and how they needed someone to see to the day-to-day details. "Do you know anyone who might fit the bill?"By the time he finished speaking, Shelby had tears running down her face.Alarmed, Sam looked at him and then at her. "Shelby, what is it?""I'm so sorry." Shelby tried frantically to deal with the tears. "I'm a mess lately. It's the hormones. They're making me into a wreck. And the business. I'm trying to figure out what to do, and then here you come and you're looking for—""We're looking for you," Sam said, "or someone exactly like you who is ruthlessly organized.""And can handle her," Nick said, pointing a thumb at Sam.As Sam scowled at her husband, Shelby laughed through her tears. "I should explain. I've been trying to have a baby. I know it might seem crazy, but I'm forty-two, and I'm tired of waiting for Mr. Right to show up. It's well-presented above.Once again Marie Force has given readers a well-crafted romantic suspense in the latest addition to her top-notch "Fatal" series. A perfect combination of love, passion and suspense!The devotion between Sam and Nick continues to grow stronger and the romance only gets more creative and steamier. It's downright swoon-worthy. The chemistry and banter that goes on between Sam and Nick is nothing less than genius. MF continues to develop the depth in her main characters, as well as in the secondary cast with new and fresh detailing. The family dynamics adds yet another level of reading enjoyment to this series. With each book readers are assured a well paced criminal plot with twists and turns that will keep you glued to your chair. Between the sizzling romance and the chilling suspense, I'm always a well-satisfied reader. "Fatal Deception" is exceptionally well-written with creativity, witty dialogue, and sizzling sensuality and once again delivers a complete package.Marie Force is a natural at her craft. Time after time, this author creates magic that brings her stories and characters alive on the pages of her books. As a reader, that's the key to a great read for me. And it always keeps me coming back again and again to read every book this author releases.I highly recommend this series. Try one book and you'll be craving more!
15 of 16 people found the following review helpful. What's not to love about Nick and Sam... By Doreen Wow talk about another awesome book added to a totally wonderfully writen series. I first feel in love with the writing style of Marie Force when I downloaded at the time a free copy of her stand alone book Love At First Flight for my Kindle and have been hooked ever since.If you've been following the romantic suspense couple of Nick and Sam this is a must read book. You learn alot more about the couple and their friends and loved ones in FD. You find out more about what happened years ago to destroy Skip (Sam's father) marriage and why he didn't want Sam looking into an old case. There's a wonderfully writen dialouge between Christin and Nick about love, marriage and babies. The connection between Sam, Nick and Scotty grows even stronger as does the romance between Nick and Sam. And you get a brand new murder and a whole new political scandel for our new couple plus a whole lot more.
12 of 13 people found the following review helpful. A Bridge Over a Giant Shark Tank By Sabrina Dent I have read through all five Fatal books, and the novella. These are not the kind of book you read for massive depth, but rather for escapism; Nick and Sam do require a certain suspension of disbelief. I'm willing to gloss over what must be America's most indolent state senator and some pretty whack police procedure. I'm willing to believe that neither one of them has had such an exhausting day that they've ever skipped a single night of sex. And I'm even willing to believe that they're both having flawlessly consistent orgasms every single time. I mean, it could happen!Where this series really jumped the shark for me was with the arrival of Scotty the Wonder Orphan. There is no child that flawless, and no child who has been in state care who comes through the system that unscathed - even a child living in the impossible magical group home described in this book. Speaking of impossible, there is also no state-licensed care facility that is going to allow a child to cross state lines and stay overnight with the Pope, let alone any other adult. Any couple looking to house a child for three weeks would require intrusive home vetting and background checks from a social worker, and in Virginia, time consumptive state-mandated training. Suspension of disbelief is one thing, but some basic research into child placement would have gone a long way here. Finally, that his gratitude is what endears Scotty to Sam and Nick is the worst of adoption tropes, and the characterisation of this relationship in Deception is a bridge too far for me. I suspect I am done with this series.
