The air had a crisp bite to it, clean and fresh, the scent of autumn. Above, the sky was cloudless, a pure Wyoming blue. Perfect training weather.Becca "Bex" Stuart flashed by another runner with a nod. The trail was busy on this Saturday morning. Mustang Creek had put in a series of municipal paths specifically for walking, biking and running, and the money had, in her opinion, been well spent. She sure took advantage of her tax dollars every chance she got.Just a light run. That was her goal this fine morning. Luckily, Bex had access, thanks to her business, to the finest athletic equipment available, so she could get an accurate time. The upcoming marathon was the usual 26.2 miles, and her strategy was to gradually work up to that. And then she'd begin tapering down. By next Saturday she should be ready. Her friends thought she was insane. From experience, because this wasn't her first endurance race, Bex knew they could be right. Mile nineteen was where you just wanted to chuck it all and quit, but if you got past it…you were home free. Her phone, clipped to her shorts, beeped.A text. She could read it as she ran; however, she couldn't answer, not without stopping, and she wasn't going to stop now.It was from one of her best friends, Melody, recently married, so now Mrs. Spencer Hogan.Meet us at the ranch for lunch? Hadleigh and I want to talk to you.It was, according to her high-tech pedometer, a manageable time frame as long as they meant around noon. She was able to type K without breaking stride. There was definitely a shower in her future before she sat down with other human beings to eat—as a favor to them. Despite the cool temperature, Bex was perspiring, as she should be, or she wasn't trying hard enough."Bex? Bex Stuart?"Male voice. Familiar. The sound jarred Bex out of her endorphin haze, brought the world around her back into focus. She'd just reached the second loop around Pioneer Park, and the place was filled with small, noisy kids celebrating life in general. The male voice belonged to Tate Calder, she saw with dismay, his two young sons among the crowd of children crawling all over the playground equipment.Tate looked, as usual, put together and handsome with his clean-cut features, wavy chestnut hair and dark eyes. He wore a leather jacket and nice jeans, while she was arrayed in the scruffiest outfit she owned—and, naturally, sweaty, as well.Great."Hi," she said. Not exactly brilliant, but polite at least. A little breathless, Bex ran in place, her body on autopilot. Keep that heart rate up.Not that it was a problem. Just looking at this man seemed to have an aerobic effect on her. She'd encountered Tate two or three times before, since he was a friend of Hadleigh's husband, Tripp, both men having flown for the same company as charter pilots back in the day, before Tripp decided it was time to sell the firm and come home to Mustang Creek.Tate's dark eyes were amused, missing nothing. "How've you been?""Good." Now there was a snappy answer. Yes, she was on a conversational roll, all right, a regular genius with words.Tate grinned. "You seem to be in a hurry, so I won't hold you up. Tripp tells me you're training for a marathon." A brief, measured pause. Meaning what? "Really?""Really," Bex replied. She managed a small smile, friendly enough, but wobbly. "Nice to see you," she said, trying to distance herself from him, still running. Still going nowhere fast. "What can I say? Guess I'm a glutton for punishment." Terrific. More snappy repartee. Annoyed with herself, she sprinted off, probably improving her time slightly, since she didn't particularly want him to remember her with a shiny face and a messy ponytail.Of all the luck.Make that bad luck.Tate was tempting as hell, no denying that, but Bex got the nearly subliminal impression that he was as wary of involvement as she was. His wife had died, and she'd lost Will in Afghanistan—it wasn't hard to do the psychological math.Thoughts in a muddle, Bex finished her run and headed for home. There, she took a hot shower, put on her favorite red sweater and black jeans and, perhaps as a nod to the cosmic forces that governed vanity, she spent a few extra minutes doing her hair and adding lip gloss.Satisfied that she looked okay, Bex left the house, got into her sporty SUV and, after making a brief stop downtown, zipped off to meet Mel and Hadleigh.Reaching the Galloway ranch minutes later, Bex felt a twinge, a bittersweet sensation somewhere in the back of her heart. Tucked among the looming mountains, crystalline streams and venerable trees, the house and barn and other outbuildings—even the fences and corrals—seemed to belong there, organic to the landscape itself.Tripp had taken over the place after his stepfather, Jim, long a widower, had finally remarried and moved into town. The house itself wasn't fancy, but it was spacious and solid and homey, with a welcoming air.Secretly, Bex had always wanted to live in the country. She loved her work, felt she was making a genuine contribution to people's health and all-around well-being by furthering the cause of fitness through her ever-expanding business. And, if not actually country, Mustang Creek was certainly no clamoring metropolis. There was something…nurturing about being out here, with all this unspoiled nature. Before she could even get out of the car, Mel and Hadleigh stepped onto the side porch, smiling and waving. Both her friends were pregnant, and both of them were more beautiful than ever.Bex felt a pang of affection, tinged, alas, with mild envy.Hadleigh was farther along than Melody, her baby bump more pronounced. She'd married first, and she and Tripp had been eager to start their family. All systems go.Melody, running a close second, was just starting to show, a bit rounder than usual, her loose shirt disguising her pregnancy. If you didn't know her, you'd never guess, but they'd all been friends since they were six years old, so Bex was attuned to every change. She was living this with them, sharing the experience in a way, and she couldn't have been more pleased by their obvious happiness. They really did glow. They knew Bex felt slightly left out—there wasn't much Melody and Hadleigh didn't know about her—and they not only understood, they were also convinced her turn at marital bliss and motherhood would come. Soon. When Bex's own hopes flagged, these two never failed to notice and offer encouragement. She was so lucky to have them in her life. That choked her up for a moment, brought the sting of tears to her eyes. Romantic flings, career highs, fun times—all those things came and went, but friendships like theirs were as permanent as bedrock. She paused, took a breath and squared her shoulders."I brought dessert," she announced cheerfully. "Don't kill me, but it's those puff pastries from Madeline's. You guys can't drink wine or coffee, so you need some sort of vice." She paused, chuckling. Some fitness guru she was, she thought wryly. "One pastry won't hurt." This was true enough, in her opinion. One pastry wouldn't do any harm. The problem arose when the rate of consumption ratcheted up to three or four tasty treats—or ten. Feeling cocky, she added, "Considering that I just ran eighteen miles, I can afford a reasonable level of indulgence."Motormouth, her inner moderator gibed."Give me that bag." Hadleigh grabbed for it as Bex came up the steps. "I'm having mine before lunch, so no lectures on nutrition, please. And if Tripp has the gall to say a word—he has the metabolism of a shark, the rat fink—I consider it your solemn duty as my friends to drop him in his tracks." Paper rustled as she peered inside the bag. Sniffed appreciatively. "Oh, dear heaven," she lamented happily, in a near moan, nudging Melody lightly with one elbow as she spoke, "it's the ones with lemon whipped cream.""Yep," Bex confirmed with a twinkle. Judging by the current reactions, if she hadn't surrendered the bag willingly, one or both of these watermelon smugglers would have tackled her for it.Melody, feigning greed, made a comical effort to snatch the fragrant sack from Hadleigh's hands, and Hadleigh, in turn, pretended to dodge the move."Hey, share and share alike," Melody said with a grin. "If you think you're going to snarf up my share right along with your own, sister, think again."Hadleigh laughed, still employing diversion tactics, an awkward endeavor under the circumstances, and Bex wondered if the third pastry, intended to be hers, would survive this good-natured tussle.Hadleigh correctly read Bex's expression. Yes, she was fit and yes, she ran a fitness empire, but she loved Madeline's lemon-cream dreams as much as anybody did. "You can drink wine," Hadleigh continued, cheerfully accusatory. "We can't. Coffee?" She waved one hand in a dismissive gesture while holding the pastry bag just out of Melody's reach with the other. "Gone. A distant memory."Bex had to giggle at her friend's histrionics.Hadleigh took in her friend's trim figure with a mock glower. "Laugh if you want, Becca Jean Stuart, but one of these days, you'll be pregnant and craving all kinds of things you can't have, and we'll be the ones rubbing it in.""Yeah," Melody agreed staunchly, making another grab for the bag.For all the joking around, a whisper of sadness brushed Bex's soul.If Will, Hadleigh's older brother and the love of Bex's life, had made it home from Afghanistan, everything would be so different. She'd loved Will Stevens so much.Maybe the phrase, "better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all," was poignant, but it really didn't offer much comfort in reflective moments like this one.Tough up, woman, Bex told herself. Then, after a beat or two, when she could trust her voice again, she went on. "Once you two get a handle on dessert, what's on the menu for lunch?" she teased. "I heard a rumor that we were going to eat an actual meal, and I could use some sustenance here."Hadleigh closed the bakery bag and rolled it shut with a little sigh of resignation. "I made spinach lasagna," she answered. "Garlic bread, too. The guys will be here soon, so maybe we ought to fill our plates before they get back with the boys.""Boys?" Bex asked cautiously. Guys usually meant Tripp and Spence. Boys implied someone else."Tate and his sons," Hadleigh explained airily. It figured, Bex thought, unsurprised. She was going to have to deal with Tate Calder twice in one day? Just one more indication that God had a sense of humor.Cosmic complaints department? This is Bex Stuart and I—Please hold for the next available operator. Your call is very important to us…There she was. Again.Tate had spotted Becca right away, back at the park. With looks like hers, she would've been hard to miss. She was trim, compact, with the kind of curves that drew a man's eye, even beneath baggy sweatpants and a faded T-shirt. And then there was all that silky hair, trying to fight its way out of a crooked ponytail. At the time, he'd hesitated to say anything because he was rusty, to say the least, when it came to the whole man-woman interaction thing. Out of practice. This particular woman stirred him, deep down, in ways he couldn't quite explain, rational thinker that he was. She made him want to take chances again, live for himself as well as his children. But what if he fell for Becca—Bex, as the others called her—and his young sons got their hopes up, let down their guard, started to believe they might have a mother again, only to see the whole thing crash and burn? Would there be survivors? He had no choice but to be philosophical.Like it or not—Tate both did and didn't like it—he and Bex were face-to-face again. The boys had both scrambled out of the truck the minute he pulled to a stop. He was grateful that they enjoyed visiting the ranch so much, and were distracted, as always, by the dogs and horses and all that space to run wild in. It meant the kids probably hadn't noticed that their dad had been flash frozen before their very eyes.Tate worked up a smile, acknowledging Tripp and Hadleigh and Melody and Spence's existence with a slight wave of one hand as he approached them. Odd, how, just a moment before, he'd been so focused on Bex that she might've been standing all alone on the ranch house porch. In fact, she might have been the only other human being on the planet.Still, he was nothing if not a left-brained realist, and his attention had slowly widened, after that first weird instant, to include the others. The cognitive dials in his head began to click, registering further details. Construction had started on the new house, for one thing.Tripp and Spence looked like what they were—happily married men. Satisfied men, maybe even a little smug.Their wives, he noted, were downright radiant, the way women tended to be when they were not only cherished by their husbands, but gloriously pregnant, too.And all the time he was formulating these observations, his sons were tearing around the yard with the dogs, overjoyed, high on blue skies and green grass and every blessing in between.Of course, part of this boyish exuberance was for his benefit; Ben and Adam had been actively engaged in a campaign for a furry friend of their own for quite a while now. Although Tate wasn't averse to the idea—he'd always loved animals himself—they lived in a rented house, and the landlord didn't allow pets. So for the time being, anyway, adopting a critter was out of the question. In the meanwhile, Muggles and Ridley filled the canine-companion bill.Tate shifted mental gears, centering himself in the now. It was a beautiful afternoon, Ben and Adam were healthy, balanced kids and they were having fun.Plus, they had a decent meal to look forward to. Tate's version of Saturday lunch was usually something along the lines of canned tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwiches. He had the feeling that they'd get something a little more appealing from Hadleigh Galloway.Inevitably, since Tate was flesh and blood, reasonably young and completely normal, his gaze strayed back to Bex. Ms. Stuart had looked two notches above terrific in her jogging clothes. Now, in a pair of well-cut jeans and a red sweater that showed off her feminine figure, she was downright distracting.Just a few yards from the casual gathering on the porch, Tate almost froze again—so much for getting centered—but an amused, all-too-knowing glance from Tripp kept him moving forward."Hello again," he heard himself say, his voice suddenly husky.Damned if the Galloways and Hogans hadn't evaporated once more, leaving him and Bex alone on the planet. He gravitated toward her, like a passing asteroid yanked into the orbit of some strange new sun, and then—then he literally collided with the woman, for God's sake, right there at the top of the porch steps. What the hell? he thought, but what he said was, "Sorry. I was thinking about the boys."Fool.Flustered, Tate looked back over one shoulder, trying to lend some credence to his fib, and saw no sign of the kids or the dogs.Bex pointed in the direction of the barn and said, "They went thataway."He gave a muffled laugh, realized he'd gripped Bex's shoulders at some point, and that he was still holding her, as though he'd expected her to fall. He let go."Thanks."After that brief expansion, the universe zoomed in again, with a swiftness that left Tate's head spinning. She smiled, which only increased the sensation, and her voice seemed far away. "Good luck catching up with them, though. All parties were moving fast. They could be in Canada by now."Tate struggled to regain his equilibrium. "That's a definite possibility," he agreed. "They're both a little hyper."This was a routine, even mundane, conversation. So why did everything seem so awkward?

Shaw I think overall this book was a fairly decent read. It wasn't my favorite of Miller's Brides of Bliss County series but for the most part I thought this book was a likable read. The trait that I loved most about this book was Miller's writing style. Like other books I have read by the author her writing style stands out in a crowded industry. I would certainly consider the author to be one of the best writer's of the modern day world and I will always be a fan. However I think that with this book there was nothing special about it. It read exactly the same way as the previous books of the series. The romance was slightly dull for me and that was disappointing. As for the chemistry there was nothing extremely sexy about the attraction between Bex and Tate. I was really expecting something a little more hotter since it is after all a western-romance.Another fault regarding the story I thought that the plot was a bit worn out. I would love to see the author return to her earlier roots as a writer and pen something that is not so typical. I love a western-romance novel, but when the plots start to repeat and the characters are the same as other characters in separate books I believe it is time for something a little more interesting. This book was a miss for me. It didn't thrill me the way I was hoping. I loved the writing. While characters, the romance and the plot all need mending. At the same time I have been reading from Miller since I was in junior high and that is never going to change. I just hope that the next series that the author does publish is a little different because this series is one that I doubt I will be finishing.

By lep I received a complimentary book from Net Galley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review. This is the first book of this series that I have read. There are two other books, but I truthfully was able to understand everything without having read the first two books. The idea of this series is that three friends made a marriage pact. I am not exactly sure of the specifics if there are any, but I do not think that matters much. This is what I consider to be a true romance because the entire book is about Bex Stuart and Tate Calder falling in love and getting together.I am frankly crazy about Tate! He is kind, generous, a great father and he is even rich. Although he gave up the corporate life when his first wife died because he realized that he had spent too much time away from his family. He spends his day building his dream house and taking care of his kids. He plans to start a business with horses so he includes all of those needs in his new home he is building. He even is more-than-willing to take care of Becca's nephew when she takes care of him for a while after his parents separate.Becca is smart, generous and ambitious. She owns her own fitness center and is working on expanding it. She offers to take care of her nephew for her sister while she works things out with her husband. Becca is a very strong and independent woman whose only problem is that she has not gotten over her first love who died many years ago.Linda Lael Miller is a very prolific and popular writer. She writes like a professional writer and uses words and phrases that allow us to feel what each character is feeling. Even though the story has no major conflict, it is an easy read that appeals to the romance in all of our hearts.I especially like this book because I think a lot of the events parallel what goes on in the world today. A lot of women are working while the husband stays home and takes care of the children. Also, Tate is a very sensitive, loving father and husband who does not feel inferior to his hardworking wife. In fact, he is very supportive of everything she says and does even if he totally doesn't agree with her.I would suggest this book to the romantic reader who doesn't like graphic sex or violence, just pure romance.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. This book like the other two in this series is cute with ... By Wootz1953 I don't know why LLM has changed her writing style. This book like the other two in this series is cute with kids and dogs but boring when it comes to romance and the depth of characters. It was the same with the Parable Montana series. I have to make myself finish the books. No romance except two sentences. You will miss it if you read too fast. I sure hope LLM goes back to her great romance and stories that she wrote all these years before the Parable Montana series and this Wyoming series. She even is now using the same name for characters as in her previous books. Tate in this book was the same name of the great book Tate she wrote in the Mckettricks of Texas. Now that was a great series. If you think this book was that good you havent read LLM past books. This was like reading the teenage Harlequin books we read in high school.

ZERO STARS By William Greer I struggled through the first 18% of this mess before giving up.Let me explain exactly why I wouldn't finish it and why I'm reviewing it anyway.Broadly speaking, Mr. Devlin doesn't seem to know English well enough to write a coherent grocery list, much less any kind of fiction. His main character is a lawyer who doesn't know the difference between a juror and a jurist. He thinks "cannibol" is a real word. (I think he meant "Cannabinol.")He doesn't know the difference between "past" and "passed."He can't stick with one tense, often switching from present to past and back again. He doesn't know what an em dash is, or how to use one.Commas seem to baffle him.He doesn't know how to create or use ellipses. He misuses apostrophes to show plurality. His use of paragraph indents is wildly inconsistent.Devlin either pretended to edit this mess or he's unfamiliar with the concept. He obviously has no concern for craftsmanship, and therefore no respect for his audience. Some scenes seem totally pointless, such as the scene with Joe and a high school acquaintance in a bar (which seems to have valet parking!).Speaking of valet parking, Joe is a self-described third-rate lawyer of the lower middle class, yet he has a gardener. The two main characters I met before quitting--Joe the lawyer and his wife Sarah--are thoroughly unappealing. In short, it was entirely too much work to attempt to read the whole thing. The writing is too close to illiteracy for me to have any fun in the reading. If I were a publisher, this would have gone to the trash well before I'd read 18%. I would not recommend this "writer" to anyone.

Unsure of what to expect, Molly meets another prince at the airport, falling in love at first sight while gazing into his blue eyes. Prince Tair is from a neighboring kingdom—and is also Taliq’s cousin. Tair falls in love with Molly, as well, but not knowing her relationship with Taliq, he mistakenly assumes the two are intimate after finding them alone together. DESERT PRINCE, DEFIANT VIRGIN (Harlequin comics), by Kim Lawrence

About the Author Kim Lawrence was encouraged by her husband to write when the unsocial hours of nursing didn't look attractive! He told her she could do anything she set her mind to, so Kim tried her hand at writing. Always a keen Mills & Boon reader, it seemed natural for her to write a romance novel - now she can't imagine doing anything else. She is a keen gardener and cook and enjoys running on the beach with her Jack Russell. Kim lives in Wales.

By Marilyn Shoemaker As the author Kim Lawrence and Sheikh Tair describe Molly James as "Miss Mouse" she's far from that especially when she finds herself at the mercy of the very proud and determined Tair.Molly James has left England and has come to a strange land to get to know her half brothers. Her mother has since passed but married the King only to divorce and leave behind her two sons. Now Molly is a guest of the King's but they have decided not to mention the fact they are related.Sheik Tair is a proud and determined man and the heir to the throne of his country. He is also a guest of the King, his Uncle and misunderstands the relationship of Molly and his friend Tariq. Because he cares deeply for Tariq and his wife Beatrice, he is determined not to let the little mouse undermine their marriage so he kidnaps Molly and takes her to the desert. He fights his attraction for Molly but in the end, makes love to her which sets off a chain of reactions from her brothers and the King.Molly James considers herself plain in comparison to her step sisters and her friend Beatrice. She has always lived in the shadows and now she is faced with the challenge of surviving in the desert with an incredibly handsome man. What she doesn't realize is how attracted Tair is to her, that he doesn't find her the "little mouse". He desires her, and her vulnerability touches him in a way that no other woman has touched him.As all sheiks, he feels honor bound because he has taken Molly's virginity and is duty bound to marry her. But Molly is sensible and realizes he doesn't love her, she refuses and returns to England with a secret. You will love this sheikh story, full of passion and romance in the desert. But when this sheikh is brought to his knees by Miss Molly, you will cheer right along with her family!

I'm surprised at the other high ratings. I gave it two stars because I did i finish the book.. The H goes from thinking her dowdy and callig her Miss Mouse to thinking her beautiful. My opinion on this book that it was thrown together quickly with no thought-out plan for the story line. But regardless... I will continue to read Kim Lawrence...

No more worries By roy t james INSTANT CONFLICT RESOLUTION by The Instant-Series Team starts with a question, “Why should you avoid conflicts?” Comes the answer, any conflict unresolved can, harm ones reputation, lead to physical damage, result in pecuniary loss in addition to causing intangible effects. Key areas of conflict prevention are then discussed, followed by mediation tactics. Methods of resolution of a conflict, which shall take prime importance if all the earlier paths avoiding a faceoff lead to failure, are discussed in detail. ‘For resolving conflicts, you have to find the right words, and the right act too, and you’ll mostly do it yourself; therefore, make it a habit to take responsibility for your action to solve your own problems as soon as they creep up’.INSTANT CONFLICT RESOLUTION by The Instant-Series Team is more of a practical guide to the problem of conflict resolution. The book is abounding with helpful lists, forms and other useful kits for actual use. At every step, description of the relevant part of healing procedure in detail makes arbitrators’ role and work very easy. Not only that this book is a great help in running ones setup in the face of potential conflicts, it makes easy, to even adjudicate when necessary. By harping on the dictum, ‘You are the best problem solver’ it takes the involvement of owners, managers as well as working people to greater heights of responsibility. Practice exercises covering the areas of instruction greatly reduce the learning effort. This short guide is a good ready reference for actual situations of finding and settling conflicts.

It was probably due to having a very low expectation, but it turned out better than I anticipatedInstant Conflict Resolution helped me understand all the different takes on conflicts and how they're not worth it. It gave a clear view on how to approach them from different angles. The book made me realize that not every situation should turn into a conflict and when to avoid them, and how to handle them which was what interested me the most. It laid some great neat techniques to avoid and handle them such as victimization resolution and resolution visualizationOne interesting unique thing about this book was that it tackled conflict management from both sides, as being in the conflict yourself or acting as a mediator that I thought was a nice touch on.The big plus to Instant Conflict Resolution would be how it really is clear, direct, and to the point and useful at the same time. It's very easy to read and not boring but with real life examples and exercises after the techniques are presented. This book nails when it comes to reading, learning, and applying what you learn. The information good for day to day use but also as I run a business and conflicts happen in that as well, but it's not just for business as it goes over and can be apply for at home as well. This book can help anybody.

Good basics, editing for clarity needed By Angela C This book needs some editing, but it is a good book for the most part. There are basics in this book about conflict resolution. It talks about how to calm yourself down so that you can speak to the other person. There are ways in here to help with everything from major fights to how to settle minor conflicts without losing your temper or bringing the other person to a boiling point. The two stars off are due to the editing problems. This book does not appear to have originally written in English, but was translated from the looks of it. This has left the language a bit stilted and the grammar odd in spots. It distracted from the book.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Danger and Intrigue! By Luv2read Alilah is an independent woman in the royal family. When she begins receiving death threats the head of security, Kalik, vows to protect her. He has kept his feelings for her to himself for years and being so close to her will be a challenge. Especially since she has had feelings for him and has kept them secret also. When the threats hit close to home those feelings begin to show but Kalik is reluctant to act because of his past. You will also read about Alilah's twin brother who has been in other books and find out how his life has changed. This book brings closure to the family but I would have liked to have a few more chapters to see what happens with everyone. Is it a good book and it you have read the other books you need to read it. If not, you can still read this as a stand alone. I was given an ARC but this did not affect my review.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Adilah Tazeem and Kalik have their own story By INDYread Great installment to the Tazeem Twins Series. This story is about Adilah Tazeem, who is twin sister to Sheikh Hussain. Hussain was the main character in book 4 and became good friends with Cassie Milton who is now with Hussain. Unlike Hussain, Adilah is always hopeful and encouraging. She always has a smile for her family, friends and her customer at the baker that she owns. For years, Adilah Tazeem has had feelings for Kalik, the head of the security for her family. She flirts and has fantasies, but she would never do anything to jeopardize his position. What she does not know, and only comes out toward the end of the book, is that her brother and father has known for a long time that both Kalik and Adilah has feelings for each other.Adilah is hosting an international Culinary Conference, which will show the world her city. During the conference, Adilah’s life is threatened. Kalik must save Adilah because he does not want to live in a world with no Adilah in it.Will Kalik and Adilah take a chance on romance or will they do what duty calls for. This is a great read and you will not regret buying and reading this installment.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Can Kalik protect and win the heart of his woman? By Melissa Adilah Tazeem is a wonderful character that expresses traits of inner strength, loyalty, compassion, and intelligence. Adilah has thrown herself into her business, something most women in her culture do not do. She loves to bake and uses that ability to establish a charity event that will place her home as the center so it is recognized for its culture and all she loves about it. In doing so, she draws the attention of a stalker. Adilah risks her own safety to protect her family and her beloved city. Adilah works with the head of security, Kalik not only because she knows he will keep her safe, but she has been in love with Kalik for years and wants nothing more than to be with him.Kalik will protect Adilah at any cost. He loves Adilah but feels he cannot act on that love as he is the head of security and she is a above him in status. Kalik is proud of Adilah and her accomplishments. When Adilah's father shares information with him that may give him a chance with Adilah Kalik jumps at it. Will Adilah love him enough to be with him?

What is the ending to the human drama? Will all be reconciled to God in the end? Does God demand an altar, a corpse, and blood? Or, rather, is the Christian God set apart from all the other gods throughout history? All Set Free sets out to answer some of the more difficult questions Christians today are faced with. It will challenge the Augustinian understanding of hell and the Calvinist understanding of the atonement; replacing them with a more Christ-centered understanding of both doctrines. This book will also use the work of René Girard in order to reshape how many understand "what it means to be human." Then and only then should we ask: "Who is God?" Come explore what has become Matthew's theological pilgrimage to this point. Come discover the God of peace. A very timely book indeed.''--Andre Rabe, Founder of Always Loved Ministries and Author of Desire Found Me'In All Set Free, Matthew Distefano articulates what an Evangelical theology might look like when shorn of it's Janus-faced deity. This is a challenging and provocative study which utilizes the mimetic theory of René Girard to reframe the perspective by which readers read the Bible. This will be the book you could put into the hands of any person seeking the post-Christian Abba of Jesus.''--Michael Hardin, Executive Director of Preaching Peace, editor/author of eight books, including The Jesus Driven Life''All Set Free is a fascinating integration of René Girard's mimetic theory with a biblical grounded Christian universalism. Every Sunday countless Evangelicals sing 'Come, Now is the Time to Worship.' Through a careful exposition of the relevant biblical passages, Distefano demonstrates the good news and literal truth of its chorus: 'One day every tongue will confess/One day every knee will bow. . .'''--Ric Machuga, Professor of Philosophy, Butte College; Author of Three Theological Mistakes: How to Correct Enlightenment Assumptions about God, Miracles, and Free Will''All Set Free is a splendid contribution to an ever-growing theological conversation springing from the work of René Girard, one that is liberating the Christian tradition from its deadly optics of violence in favor of something much more in character with Jesus's forgiving and loving Abba. Distefano makes the case for the reconciliation of all humanity with God, in a fluent, engaging style, rising often to eloquence, presenting multiple arguments to bring out the inconsistency in textual interpretations demanding eternal retributive punishment. Most of all, he gives us a positive message of a nonviolent God whose deep attraction promises to make the rote prayer of 'your kingdom come...on earth' become thrilling human reality. A vital book for twenty-first-century Christianity.''--Anthony W. Bartlett, Co-Founder and Contributing Theologian at Theology and Peace; Author of Virtually Christian: How Christ Changes Human Meaning and Makes Creation New --Wipf and Stock Publishers''In All Set Free, Matthew Distefano offers his readers many gifts. For those asking new and intellectually challenging questions about God, he provides a map of the terrain, including areas which other maps cordon off with 'here there be monsters.' For those whose religious communities have ostracized them for their questions, he offers vulnerability and companionship. This is not a lawyer's brief, defending a position at all costs. Neither is it an exposé, claiming to unmask deficient theologies. Rather, it displays the gift of joy that comes with discovering the God of peace.'' --Gregory A. Clark, Professor of Philosophy, North Park University''All Set Free begins with the assumption that the character of God is revealed in the nonviolent story of Jesus. The result is a merciful and loving God, who would not kill many thousands of people (as is often assumed from the traditional reading of the Old Testament) and who would not condemn millions of people to fiery torture after death for unending billions of years. Instead the book argues for a 'universal reconciliation' in which punishment is not rejected but serves a purifying function so that eventually all are reconciled to God. All Set Free is thus a welcome addition to the growing body of literature that challenges the inherited ideas of a violent God and a God for whom forgiveness and salvation depend on a propitiating death of Jesus. The assumption that drives the book obviously requires rethinking a number of inherited doctrines and also developing a new understanding of biblical interpretation. This book pursues these questions through a lens focused by René Girard. For those who want a Girardian analysis, this is a very interesting book, which concludes with a heart-felt invitation to live peacefully by living in and imitating the peace-loving God who is revealed in Jesus.''--J. Denny Weaver, Professor Emeritus of Religion, Bluffton University''So many of us are finding our way out of the penal atonement theory with all its prohibitions and implicit violence. In All Set Free, Matthew Distefano stands in this tradition and does it convincingly and with conviction. I hope many, sensing something wrong with Christianity, will read this book and be encouraged on their own journey toward a God who actually brings Good News.''--Tom Truby, Member of Theology & Peace; United Methodist pastor in the Oregon-Idaho Annual Conference''In All Set Free, Matthew Distefano presents a way of reading the scriptures that will be new to many. And therein lies its value. We do not gain new insight by simply affirming what we already believe, we expand our thinking by exposing ourselves to ideas that might contradict our current believes. Using René Girard's anthropological insights, Distefano creates a context in which to read the scriptures that exposes the god of violence as human projection, and unveils the Father of Jesus Christ as the inversion to this human projection. A very timely book indeed.''--Andre Rabe, Founder of Always Loved Ministries and Author of Desire Found Me''In All Set Free, Matthew Distefano contributes an accessible yet accurate synthesis of how post-Evangelicals might integrate the discoveries of mimetic theory into an increasingly clear vision of the non-retributive God. The author heeds Michael Hardin's call to hear Jesus say, 'Be not afraid,' to its conclusions in ultimate reconciliation. Distefano shows how such a move brings personal healing to those battered by the unChristlike gods. A helpful synthesis.''--Bradley Jersak, Author of A More Christlike God --Wipf and Stock Publishers

A hopeful introduction to mimetic theory and universal restoration By Rob Grayson I'm delighted to have had the opportunity to read an advance copy of All Set Free and offer some brief comments. All Set Free is ambitious in its scope, all the more so for a first book. Matthew's ostensible goal is to make a case for "universal restoration" – the hope that ultimately, none will be lost and all will come to the reconciling knowledge and experience of God's all-encompassing love. He makes his case enthusiastically and winsomely, quoting liberally from scripture and other sources as well as drawing on his own experience. But along the way he also tackles a number of other key topics, among them what it means to read scripture in a Jesus-centred way and how to understand the atonement in view of God's non-violence revealed in Jesus. He also provides a broad introduction to René Girard's groundbreaking work on the origins of human culture and sacrifice and helps us see how our sacrificial origins have so often – and so damagingly – shaped our theology and our practice of community. This is, above all, a hopeful book that should open up new vistas of hopeful possibility to those who have too long felt stuck in a prison of religious certainty whose news often seems anything but good, and to those who have rejected the version of Christianity offered to them on the basis that the God portrayed to them appears to be at best hard to please and at worst downright dangerous. Matthew joins the growing chorus of voices calling for a more Christlike re-appraisal of the God of love and light. My hope is that reading his book will leave you with questions like "Can God really be that good?!" and whet your appetite for further study.

"All Set Free" is a lucid and sometimes "chatty" read: it never pretends to be an obfuscatory theological tome. And that's a Darn Good Thing. This is not to say that this slim volume lacks any power, precision or weight. Distefano tackles tough questions which have exercised thinking minds for centuries: Is God violent? Did God demand "satisfaction" or retribution by sending Jesus to the cross? Is "salvation" universal or only for the lucky minority? (Distefano doesn't use the word "lucky" but his deconstruction of Calvinistic election expertly lights up serious flaws in Neo-Fundamentalist arguments.)The position of "All Set Free" is present in the title: Distefano has no doubt - nor do I - that the living God is non-violent, peace-loving and -seeking and the active practitioner of reconciliation and restorative justice, not the monstrous creation of human minds who traffic in blood, violence and retribution, subsequently projecting our horror onto the Creator. My only quibble is with Distefano's treatment of God's justice, which seems to defy the assertion that God is non-violent. However, in the context of proposing an alternative but equally-valid view of Mediaeval (but non-scriptural) notions of hell, Distefano rehearses the arguments against annihilation and, specifically, eternal conscious torment with great aplomb and insight. In short, Distefano knows his stuff and does an excellent job of distilling it into a clear and readable form. Nor should the book's slimness cause anyone to think that it is "slight": it is much harder to achieve such disciplined modulation than to fling wide the theological dictionary and pour out thousands upon thousands of words. Both kinds of writing have their place. "All Set Free" is an excellent place to begin, which is not "damning with faint praise"!Many will in any case find the book challenging. My hope is that those who are beginning truly to love the living God with all their mind will find in Matthew Distefano's work exactly the hope that I believe Jesus came to offer humankind.

Navigating the dark corridors of confusion and anxiety, searching for clarity and understanding and relief only to run into walls of self-doubt and torturous demons haunting your consciousness with the most terrifying “what ifs,” living in fear can be paralyzing, isolating, and self-diminishing. When the cause of such fear is anxiety about the nature or existence of God, it can be overwhelming, because the consequences it threatens are eternal. For one who struggles to believe in a God who is described by many to be both the very source of love and the author of the most excruciating eternal torments, admitting such fear is in itself a source of anxiety. In apprehension of isolating yourself by expressing worries no one else seems to acknowledge, in trepidation of essentially sealing a dreaded fate by admitting aloud that you just don’t know – when the horrors of hell for disbelieving somehow seem more palpable than the God whose blend of love and torture is impossible to comprehend – wrestling with such doubt, like Jacob in the Jabbok, can feel like drowning.Although I come from a very different background within the Christian tradition than author Matthew Distefano, he has articulately expressed the fear that once held me captive – fear of my own unbelief, fear of hell, fear of God. But much more, he has succinctly and eloquently shone a light on his journey to the perfect Love that casts out such fear. The revelation of God’s universal healing and reconciling love in Jesus is undoubtedly a gift of grace, but Matthew has also put much effort into the metanoia – the transformation through the renewal of mind -- that was begun in him by Christ. His assurance that God’s love enfolds everyone has come through careful study of theology, anthropology, hermeneutics, and the historical context of Jesus’s life and ministry. I saw parallels to my own journey while reading this book, and find that it both enhances my understanding of God’s love and helps me to communicate to others the amazing process of moving from anxiety to adoration and distress to discipleship. Should you be haunted by frightening interpretations of scripture or perplexed by the violence of God, reading this book with an open heart and mind (and an open Bible!) will not only illumine Matthew’s journey from fear to freedom, but may well propel you on a journey of your own! I know it is Matthew’s hope, and mine as well, that all will one day be "All Set Free."

That being said, I still appreciate this volume for its scope and physical quality. As with all of the Valiant Deluxe Editions, this book covers several arcs of the title. The first arc was originally an event that tied in with the XO Manowar series, and while the XO issues aren't very satisfying alone, the Unity issues make for a good read by thenselves and leave no important story elements uncovered. Unfortunately, the third arc, part of the Armor Hunters event, served more as a supplement to the overall story and suffer out of context. The second and fourth arcs are, in my opinion, poor and decent, respectively. The latter is proceeded by Harbinger: Faith #0, certainly a high point in the volume. As with previous Deluxe Editions, the physical quality and large format are simply the best way to experience these issues, and the obligatory extras in the back make for a nice treat. Fans of Unity will definitely find this volume a great way to revisit these stories.
