There were moments that brought tears to my eyes and those moments of laughter. It was a stark reminder of how important it is for parents, especially fathers to be there for their sons. The scenes were just so alive. This book makes for a great gift. I look forward to more of this quality writing!

The stories come alive which makes it easy for anyone to relate, especially the child who grew up in a single parent home, or the parent who struggled so hard to make ends meet while seeing their child/children grow.

Review "Hilarious, adorable, and consistently funny, Awkward Yeti is one of my favorite comics on the web right now." (Matthew Inman, The Oatmeal)"I have something to tell you as an award-winning, thirty-year veteran of cartooning who is very hard to impress; The Awkward Yeti is worth your time. If you don't agree, we probably wouldn't be friends." (Dan Piraro, Bizarro Comics)The book is effing hilarious! (Jon Cryer)

About the Author The Awkward Yeti was created by cartoonist Nick Seluk in late 2012, followed by the Heart and Brain spinoff in 2014. Nick pursued his lifelong dream of being a professional cartoonist after serving nine years in the corporate world as a graphic designer. In his childhood, he drew inspiration from classics like Calvin and Hobbes, The Far Side, Garfield, and The Simpsons. Nick lives with his wife, three young kids, and a lovable, ornery old dog in the suburbs of Detroit. Raisler I hate to admit it, but I had NEVER heard of this strip until I went to SDCC this summer. (Which is weird, since about 90% of what I read is comic strips, and have THOUSANDS of books dedicated to the art form.)I went by the Go Comics booth, and soon as I saw the flyer (see below) I KNEW this was going to be something I HAD TO HAVE. Both sides are SO dead on as to how my brain and heart work, I was amazed.I was also lucky enough to get a drawing from Nick, summing up how I feel about Comic Con! (see below) (Hall B has the Go Comics and Comic Society booth, as well as other faves, Sheldon by Dave Kellett, Lonnie Milsap, and Keith Knight, my faves).FINALLY, the book came out and it did NOT disappoint! The comics are funny and dead on to the struggle between what you WANNA do, and what you GOTTA do. The art is a delight and the colors REALLY pop. The book is also very well printed. Can't WAIT for another book!

I quote so many lines from this comic that it's like one of Nick's diminutive organs are playing in my mind ... and rolling off my tongue! Nick Seluk will dazzle you with his brain and his heart and his sole! I've been a AWYE (Aw YEAH!) fan for years and really even before anyone else. So it's cool to see him start to make something with his life. Congrats, Nick, I like your stile.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Quirky, Random and Utterly Charming (Indubitably)! By Heather Bennett True story... I pre-ordered THREE copies of this book six months before it came out. And then the day it was released, I ran to the bookstore anyway to buy a copy because I didn't want to wait for my Amazon order to arrive (the books actually arrived unexpectedly that same night, but as Awkward Yeti readers know, the heart wants what the heart wants). Why should YOU buy this book? Ask yourself: Are you a fan of utter nonsense? Have you ever felt like your brain and heart were at odds? Do you wonder what that last question would look like personified in cartoon form? What are your thoughts on pizza? Oops, sorry, I got off topic on that last one. Where was I? Oh, yeah...Nick Seluk is one of my favorite cartoonists. Okay, that's a lie. He's actually my favorite cartoonist at the moment (along with Doug Savage of Savage Chickens). I grew up with The Far Side as my all-time-favorite gold standard comic (and was heartbroken when Gary Larson stopped publishing). Likewise, Bill Watterson's Calvin and Hobbes was clever and funny and charming, but that too ended. The Awkward Yeti, and Heart and Brain, bring back memories of these cartoons and also bring a big smile to my face. The strips combine the perfect balance of goofy drawings, endearing silliness, clever dialogue, balloon-toting butterflies, business tie-wearing brains, and an abundance of exuberant hopefulness.I'm giving away a few copies as gifts, but I will definitely keep my own copy within easy reach on the bookshelf (with room for future Awkward Yeti books to come).Indeed.

Rosemary Goldsmith, the daughter of a weapons manufacturer, has been kidnapped by a black revolutionary cell called Scorched Earth. Their leader, Uhuru Nolicé, is holding her for ransom and if he doesn’t receive the money, weapons, and apology he demands, “Rose Gold” will die—horribly and publicly. So the authorities turn to Easy Rawlins, the one man who can cross the necessary lines to resolve this dangerous standoff and find Rose Gold before it’s too late.     In the sixties era of black nationalism, political abductions, and epidemic police corruption, Easy’s investigation will pull him—unremittingly and inevitably—into the darkest underbelly of Los Angeles.

Review "You know Mosley will bring things to a satisfactory conclusion, so you can let the story fall away in favor of its rich social fabric, rendered in well-observed details of skin color, speech, dress and, of course, neighborhoods. This is the triumph of each Easy Rawlins story—documenting this changing panorama of a city where the migration of Southern blacks, eager to claim it as their new world, is constantly remaking the city as it remakes them. Every Rawlins novel can be read on its own, but it's a far richer experience to read them in sequence and follow Easy's complex evolution as well as that of his ad hoc family and tight circle of friends. These are the folks who provide a fascinating set of roadside attractions as Easy's case rolls on."—Los Angeles Times"When it comes to naming names, Walter Mosley knows no peer. A cop called Frisk, a guru who goes by Vandal, a boxer known as Hardcase Tommy Latour and a black militant with the excellent moniker of Most Grand all figure in Rose Gold, Mosley's endlessly entertaining new Easy Rawlins mystery."—The New York Times Book Review"Fans of Mosley's private investigator were grateful Rawlins survived, and for good reason: Mosley's writing gifts go well beyond the gumshoe genre. With Rawlins, he weaves in a tense racial element throughout, and raises the level of his achievement."—Associated Press"Set in L.A. during the height of the Vietnam War, Mosley’s impressive 13th Easy Rawlins mystery (after 2013’s Little Green) finds Roger Frisk, special assistant to the police chief, calling on Easy with a job...  Easy’s experiences and insights perfectly mirror the turbulent ’60s."—Publishers Weely, starred"Mosley has few peers when it comes to crafting sentences, and he's woven some beauties into this swift-moving yet philosophical story that does more for illustrating an iconic perioud than hours of documentary film could. This Easy Rawlins novel harks back to the great early days of the series."—Booklist, starred"...The most quotable of all contemporary detectives stirs up enough trouble for scene after memorable scene."—Kirkus Reviews

About the Author WALTER MOSLEY is the author of more than forty-two books, most notably twelve Easy Rawlins mysteries, the first of which, Devil in a Blue Dress, was made into an acclaimed film starring Denzel Washington. Always Outnumbered was an HBO film starring Laurence Fishburne, adapted from his first Socrates Fortlow novel. He is the winner of numerous awards, including an O. Henry Award, a Grammy Award, and PEN America's Lifetime Achievement Award. A Los Angeles native and graduate of Goddard College, he holds an MFA from CCNY and now lives in Brooklyn, New York.

In the 1950s and ’60s, when the rent was dirt cheap, people moved to be closer to a new job, away from an old lover, or when it seemed that a fundamental change of life was in order. Sometimes the person moving would not only change the numbers on his or her door but also the name on the mailbox, the used car in the driveway, and even the style of clothes they donned to walk out and meet the day.Now and then the move was not merely aesthetic or convenient but necessary; like when a bill collector, lawyer, or the law itself was hot on the temporary tenant’s trail. At a time like this the migrant leaseholder would make sure that the new domicile was inside the border of a different unincorporated town or municipality of L.A. County. That way the law offered few systems to track his whereabouts. A man could actually avoid dunning or even arrest by merely moving across the street. In the case of a necessary move, the rental émigré would load up a truck in the middle of the night and go with no fanfare, or notice to the landlord. This was not the case with my midmorning migration. My daughter and I were moving, that Sunday, from Genesee at Pico to Point View just a few houses north of Airdrome; not more than eleven blocks. This was a necessary move that was not due to any legal or monetary bureaucracy.Five months or so earlier I had almost died. At that time I had been involved in a case that put my home in jeopardy, and so I had sent my daughter to stay with her brother at a friend’s place, temporarily. I resolved the case but then drove my car off the side of a coastal mountain. Whether this accident was due to a subconscious death wish or just bad luck is uncertain, but I was in what the doctors called a semicoma for the better part of two months.During that time a squatter named Jeffrey had taken possession of the empty house on Genesee. With the help of my friend Raymond Alexander, Jeff was put out. This was not a gentle eviction and I worried that Feather, my adopted daughter, might one day be home alone when the squatter returned for revenge. And so I sold the Genesee house and bought a new, larger place on Point View. I might have ranged farther but that September, Feather was going to enter the seventh grade at Louis Pasteur Junior High and the new address was just a block away from there. And so some friends—LaMarque Alexander (Raymond’s son), Jesus (my adopted boy, now a young man), Jackson Blue and his wife’s associate Percy Bidwell—helped Feather and me load our belongings into a rented truck and drive it over to the new door.I would have hired a moving company but recently, within the last week, the city had seen fit to inspect all five of the rental properties I owned and demanded I fix structural problems, perform a termite-extermination, and in one place they even required that I install a new heating system. It would take every cent I had, and then some, to pay for the improvements, so I rented a truck from my old pal Primo and called on my friends to lend a hand with the move.Feather set herself up in the entranceway of the rare two-story residence and directed the men where to deposit the bureaus, tables, beds, boxes, and chairs. My daughter had light brown hair and skin. She was tall for twelve and lean, not to say thin. She was becoming an accomplished long-distance runner as her brother, Jesus, had been, and was fluent in three languages already. Neither she nor her brother had one drop of blood in common with me, or each other, but they were my kids and we were family.“Uncle Jackson,” Feather said from the front hall, “that little table goes in Daddy’s room upstairs. He uses it for his desk.”“Upstairs?” Jackson exclaimed. He was around my age, mid-forties, short, jet black, and skinny as a sapling tree. “Girl, this table might look little but the wood is dense, and heavy.”“I’ll help, Uncle J,” Jesus said. My boy was pure Mexican Indian. He was no taller than Jackson Blue but his years of working his own small fishing boat had made him strong.Jesus got behind the table, taking most of the weight, and Jackson groaned piteously as he guided it up the stairs.“This is a really nice house you got here, Mr. Rawlins,” Percy Bidwell said.He was almost my height, a brassy brown, and good-looking. His hair had been processed into tight curls. I always distrusted men who processed their hair. This was a prejudice that I realized was not necessarily justified.“Thank you, Percy. I like it.”“Jewelle said that you haven’t moved in years. I guess this house was just too good to pass up. Must’ve cost quite a bit for a place this big in this neighborhood.”I also didn’t like people asking about my business. Percy was racking up the negative points on my friendship register.“Do you work for Jewelle?” I asked.“No.” He seemed almost insulted by the question.Jewelle MacDonald had come from a real estate family and on her own had amassed an empire of apartment buildings and commercial properties. She was even part-owner of a major international hotel that was being constructed in downtown L.A. Jewelle was barely out of her twenties and married to the onetime roustabout, now computer expert Jackson Blue. It was no insult to ask if Bidwell worked for her. She had sent him to help Jackson, after all.“Jewelle told me that if I wanted to get in contact with Jason Middleton,” Percy said, “that you were the one who would do that for me.”His sentence structure told me that he thought that I was somehow under the direction of Jewelle; that all he had to do was mention that she had asked for something and I would make that something happen.I turned away from him and called, “LaMarque!”“Yes, Mr. Rawlins?”The lanky twenty-two-year-old loped from the truck to my side.“Where’s your father?”“He had to go back east on business.”Business for Raymond, more commonly known as Mouse, was high-end heists with the strong possibility of brutality and bloodshed.“So he sent you to take his place?” I asked. I could feel Percy Bidwell starring daggers at my back.“Mama did. When you called to ask for Dad to help, she send me.”“How long you been back from Texas?”“Nine days.”“You outta all that trouble now?”“I ain’t in no gang no more,” he said, looking down a little sheepishly.EttaMae, LaMarque’s mother and Raymond’s wife, had sent the young man down to Texas to work on her brother’s farm for a while. She did that to save the lives of the gang members who had tried to claim him as one of their own. Raymond would have killed them all if she hadn’t interfered.A car pulled up to the curb just then. It was a dark Ford with four male passengers. Most cars in Southern California transported a solitary driver, a couple, a double date, or a family. Four men in a car most likely spelled trouble if there wasn’t a construction site somewhere in the vicinity.“Well,” I said to LaMarque while watching the men confer, “you get back to work and I’ll give you twenty dollars to go home with.”“Yes, sir,” he said. Etta had taught the boy his manners.LaMarque ducked his head and ran back to the truck.“Mr. Rawlins,” Percy Bidwell said.“Yeah, Percy?” I was watching the men as they prepared to disembark.“About Mr. Middleton.”“What is it you want with Jason?”“That’s private,” the young man said.“Then you better just call him up yourself and leave me out of it.”“I don’t know him.”“And I don’t know you.”“Jewelle told me to tell you to call him.”“You don’t tell me what to do, son, and neither does Jewelle.”The four men were out of the car by then. They were all white men, tall, and burly. Three of them wore off-the-rack suits of various dark hues. The eldest, maybe fifty years of age, was dressed in a dark-colored, tailored ensemble that was possibly even silk. The leader began the stroll up the slight incline of my lawn.“Easy,” Jackson warned from an upstairs window.“I see ’em, Blue.”“Is it all right?”“I hope so.”“Mr. Rawlins,” Percy was saying, trying once again to impress his will upon me.“Either get back to work or go home, Percy,” I said. “I got other things on my mind right now.”

Another super addition to Mosley's series which feature private eye Easy Rawlins By Kcorn In Rose Gold, Walter Mosley's latest book, private eye Easy Rawlins is hired by Roger Frisk, a cop, to track down Rosemary Goldsmith, the daughter of a wealthy munitions manufacturer. Rosemary has been kidnapped. Frisk thinks Rawlins has the skills and experience needed to help solve the case. And because Rawlins is a black man, Frisk feels this might be an advantage in areas where a white detective might be viewed with suspicion.Although he is at first reluctant, an eight thousand dollar payment - plus a bonus if he wraps up the case successfully - convinces Rawlins to take the assignment, although he wryly notes that "no policeman had ever offered me money". This sets off a chain of events with the usual bumps and detours of many mysteries. But Mosley isn't just any mystery writer and Easy Rawlins has his own way of doing things - not always going strictly by the book, depending on the situation .Rose Gold is set in the 60s and there are sections centered on hippies, drugs, radical politics, and a revolutionary cell. While tracking down Rosemary is the main focus of this novel, there are several other mysteries as well: a stolen child, a friend's romantic obsession, and more. This plot moves at a smooth pace and this book can easily be read in a day or two.Walter Mosley's sentences are a delight to read. He descriptions vividly evoke time and place and with tight prose. He doesn't waste a word. Having noted that, I have to confess that this isn't one of my favorite books by Mosley. In spite of the solid pacing, some sections seemed to drag a bit and I wasn't completely captivated by the plot. But even a less than stellar mystery written by Mosley is well worth the ride. I'd have preferred to give it 4 and 1/2 stars but rounded up to 5 stars because it merits a rating above 4 stars.I received a review copy and was delighted to have had the opportunity to read it. I want to add that I never write positive reviews simply because I receive review copies.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. The 13th Easy Rawlins novel (4.5 stars) By TChris Easy Rawlins has lost interest in being a private detective (not surprising, given his loss of interest in life that recent novels chronicle) but his daughter has a chance to go to an expensive private school so he can't turn down a lucrative offer to investigate the disappearance and potential kidnapping of Rosemary Goldsmith, the daughter of a prominent weapons manufacturer. The mayor and the chief of police want Rawlins on the case and give him little opportunity to turn it down despite Easy's uneasy feeling about it. They need Rawlins because he's black. They believe his race will give him access to Bob Mantle, a black boxer-turned-revolutionary who has been seen with Rosemary in Los Angeles. There are, of course, additional complications to the assignment that become apparent only after Easy's work is well underway . Patty Hearst echoes in the story, as do other events from the time in which the novel is set. Along the way Easy does a favor for his cop friend, Melvin Suggs, who is experiencing difficulties of his own. Several other series regulars return in small supporting roles.Walter Mosely always tells a good story. This isn't the most compelling plot in the Easy Rawlins series but it is credible and entertaining. There are so many other things to like about a Mosely novel, however, that the plot often takes a back seat. Easy always peppers his first-person narrative with observations about the state of the nation and the changing world, a world that cannot change fast enough to suit him. As always, Easy's observations of racial injustice are pointed and personal. Easy is always a half step away from being beaten, murdered, or jailed because of his skin color. In his world, race is more likely than guilt or innocence to determine who will be arrested and punished. At the same time, Rose Gold, like the other novels in the series, emphasizes the importance of family and friendships as a refuge from racism. Easy is renewed and restored by the insights he gains during his investigation, a welcome change from the darkness he's experienced in the last couple of novels. Even without the engaging characters, poignant moments, and sharp prose, Easy's renewal would be reason enough for an Easy Rawlins fan -- which I am -- to embrace Rose Gold. If I could, I would give Rose Gold 4 1/2 stars.

9 of 11 people found the following review helpful. A Surprisingly Boring Plot, but the Writing and Characters Make It Enjoyable By rvialet Easy Rawlins needs money. Again. This guy can't get a break. Sometimes I wish that this series would just end where Easy acquires a bunch of money, sends Feather off to a good school overseas, retires from running the streets, settles down on farmland out in Ventura somewhere with Bonnie and tend crops on his farm all day. He definitely deserves it. But nope, them's the breaks. Easy seems destined to roam the streets of Los Angeles as a private dick. Money trouble always seems to creep up on him. This time his rental properties need city-required repairs and his adopted daughter Feather has been invited to go to an expensive Ivy prep school. The LAPD stop by his new house just in time to offer him a heap of money to help locate a kidnapped UC Santa Barbara coed that might just turn out to be a Patty Hearst situation.I'm starting to feel more and more now that Mosley should end this series soon. No, not really, I'd miss Easy too much! But it at least needs an overhaul. It's suffering from what befalls so many other detective series: stale plots. The plots are starting to get repetitive. The last book, Little Green, was also pretty forgettable for this same reason. This new novel lost any tension it might've had pretty early on, after you discover that there's not much danger. It's disappointing because I think that a Patty Hearst-style kidnapping would be ripe for an engaging story. The series needs to be shaken and spiced up a little bit, the way Mosley did in the great installment Cinnamon Kiss, where Easy had something to really fight for. But, Mosley's great writing, the highly-readable main character, and his motley cast of friends and colleagues introduced in previous novels, are enough to keep me going, despite the yawn-inducing plot.

Sara wasn't looking to meet someone when she booked her family's vacation. She just wanted to give her kids, and herself, a decent Christmas. Away from home. Away from the painful memories of what they had before her husband died. Ty hopped a flight out of LA after another fight with his on again, off again girlfriend. 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. So Unexpected By DAA This first part of the story line was really good. Sara lost her husband a year ago. While on winter vacation with her two boys she meets Ty. He worked in construction and she work at her son's school. They had enough chemistry for him to move from LA to New Hampshire to see if they had a chance. It was sizzling. That is until he got his big break. You see he was also a singer who wrote his own stuff. Now that is where I will stop telling what happens. There are two more parts left t be told. Amanda Wilhelm has me hooked.

Edgington I have to say that after reading the first volume of this trilogy, my heart is breaking, and as far as I am in the second book, it's still broken. Amanda's writing is so good as I would compare it to LaVyrle Spencer's. That is the highest praise from me as Ms. Spencer is my favorite romantic author. I have to close here; I need to get back to reading book #2.

The comedian, actor, television host, podcast king, and New York Times bestselling author of President Me, Not Taco Bell Material, and In Fifty Years We’ll All Be Chicks now lays down the law on the plight of the modern parent.

Parents, do you often think that if your kids had to grow up the way you did—without iPads, 70-inch flatscreen TVs, American Girl dolls, and wifi in the climate controlled minivan—that they might actually be better off? Do you feel underappreciated or ignored? Do you worry you’re raising a bunch of spoiled softies who will never know how to do anything themselves—because you do everything for them? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you need Daddy, Stop Talking.

Adam rips parenthood a new one, telling it straight about what adults must do if they don’t want to have to support their kids forever. Using his own crappy childhood as a cautionary tale, and touting the pitfalls of the kind of helicopter parenting so pervasive today, Daddy, Stop Talking is the only parenting book you should ever read. Here, too, is sage advice to Adam’s own kids—and to future parents—on what matters most: dating; drinking and drugs; buying your first house and car; puberty; and what kind of assholes his kids (and yours) should avoid becoming. Even if his own son and daughter pretty much ignore everything he says, you shouldn’t. And you’re welcome. Again.

LAST WILL & TESTAMENT OF Adam Carolla

I, Adam Carolla, being of beaten-down mind, declare this to be my Last Will and Testament. I revoke all wills and addendums previously made by me. (You guys never did listen, anyway.)

Article I

I appoint the rest of the world’s unappreciated dads as Personal Representatives to administer this Will. I bequeath to them the right to crack a couple cold ones in the garage after working their asses off all week and ask that they be permitted to watch all the porn they like and not have to change diapers and get dragged to every preschool “graduation” and PTA meeting.

Article II

To my wife, I leave a safe-deposit box, the sole content of which is a note reading “Get a job. I’m dead,” and my best wishes on trying to keep up with the unending demands of our house, cars, dog, and kids.

Article III

I devise, bequeath, and give my kids this book, Daddy, Stop Talking. Since you guys were the death of me, I leave you these pages of wisdom. But no cash, cars, or property. You’ve got to earn those. On that note, I further demand that the following message be placed on the marker of my grave: “You’re All on Your Own Now. Enjoy.”

About the Author

By Pen I'm an expecting dad, my wife is due in a couple months and my wife is all about reading baby books and there is a pile of "How to let everyone walk all over you" books I couldn't push more than 1/3 of the way through. The advice is essentially go work 90 hours a week and then come home and help with the housework the other 78 you can sleep when you're dead.I got Adam's book at a book expo and got to meet him and get it signed. He cracks me up. If you are looking to be father of the year you might wana check out some garbage by one if those Martha clones with a well kept beard. If you want a bit of light reading, advice (good and bad) mixed with mild wholesome verbal abuse this book will be a welcome addition to your tomes of fatherly wisdom. If you took the abuse comment seriously this isn't for you, go back to dumping gallons of purell on your kids hands so they develop a healthy fear of dirt and hard work.I don't usually laugh when I read but this book has been a pleasant exception.I'm still finishing this one up I'll update my review in a day or two. Enjoy!

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Decent book from Adam Carolla By Amazon Customer I've read all of Mr. Carolla's books so far and they are interesting and humorous. Each book has included funny stories and heartfelt moments, and they seem authentic as well. I'd consider this book excellent on its own, but having read the author's previous books, several vignettes are alluded to and/or outright repeated, so I wasn't as enthused upon completing this current title. I think Carolla is on track in most of his parental advice, particularly his emphasis on hard work. Some of the chapters are unusual, of an adult nature, and for me did not enhance the reading experience. Carolla's views are unique enough that while I don't agree with some of his conclusions, he is clearly a thinker who sets goals, has experienced ups and downs, and has navigated a difficult industry successfully. This is a worthwhile read for fans of the author, and anyone who's interested in some funny life stories with a message attached, namely how working hard and caring about your family are the two most important things in life, from the author's perspective. Carolla is an atheist, so one of his key points is to live purposefully every day, and always do your best, because in his opinion life is short and ends at death. So while his advice makes sense, it may not hit everyone the right way, but his approach is lighthearted enough that I don't think it will challenge anyone's current faith. Mr. Carolla articulates his point of view in a way which is generally respectful of others' beliefs, although he pokes fun at different ethnicities routinely. His style is somewhat like the legendary Don Rickels in this respect, although Carolla comes across as more well meaning and less mean. This book is not for everyone but I think it would be a fun read for most Gen Xers. That's sort of where Carolla's humor lines up in my opinion.

By Mignon Mykel 4.5 / 5 starsReceived a review copy in exchange for an honest review; full tour post with excerpt(s)/quote(s) can be found at original posting:http://mnonmklreviews.blogspot.com/2015/06/review-healed-by-love-blog-tour.htmlMelissa Foster is expanding those Bradens!HEALED BY LOVE is book one in the Peaceful Harbor, Maryland Bradens, and features Nate; the Bradens of Peaceful Harbor will focus on Nate and his five siblings. While reading this book, I couldn’t help but think how in the world does Melissa keep coming up with all of these stories? One would think that at some point, someone’s story would start to sound like someone else’s but, while I haven’t read them all yet, I haven’t noticed this to be true.Nate had been the best of friend’s with Rick Fisher; as such, he watched Rick’s sister Jewel grow up, just a few years younger than they were. He’d probably been at least half in love with the girl for most of his life… But where he couldn’t do anything about it before, being his best friend’s sister, he really can’t do anything about it now.Between their five-year age difference and out of respect for Rick, Nate had always kept his feelings for Jewel to himself. After the death of their father, Rick took on the role of overseer for his younger siblings. When he and Nate decided to join the military, life resumed as normal until the day a sniper killed Rick – before Nate got the courage talk to Rick about Jewel.Allowing their mother to grieve, Jewel took on the role Rick once had and became the one her siblings looked up to, asked permission for things to, as well as the one who did all of the parent things (go to games, drop off at dance, get ready for school). While I understand it was part of her grieving process and that her mother understood that, I became very annoyed with Jewel – it wasn’t as if her mother was gone, nor incapable of taking care of her children.I liked Nate – here we have a man who is overcome with grief and guilt, but is managing to survive day by day. He still cares for the Fisher family, and cares deeply for Jewel, but doesn’t feel that he has the right to pursue that kind of relationship, so he stays her friend – even if a New Year’s Eve kiss replays in his (…and her) head. This book was about the healing process for both Nate and Jewel – like the title suggests, they will heal with love. Nate has secrets that will eventually come out, and Jewel has her needs and compulsions that need to calm, but it takes two people who love one another, have always really loved the other, to get through that healing process.Be forewarned, there are a number of tearing spots – spots where I downright bawled my eyes out, so I’m sure the average reader may get at least misty eyed.

By Ishabelle Manalo I received an ARC of this book from Tasty Book Tours in exchange for an honest review and as part of the book's blog tour promotions.Let me first say that this isn't my first book from Melissa Foster, so I know what I'm talking about when I review this book. Also, I am a fan of Ms. Foster. And because I am a fan, I have to be honest and say that I didn't love this book.I liked it, yes. Ms. Foster has a way of writing about huge families who all love each other through good and bad times. She has a way of writing about contemporary and new adult books that makes readers go through page by page with much excitement. Therefore, it is no surprise that thus book is a good one. I just didn't love it as much as I loved her other books.I think my biggest issue with this book was the heroine. I get why she had issues. I get that she has had huge losses in her young life. It's hard to lose a father and a brother too. However, her reaction to the hero's confession was disappointing. Also, if she reacted that way, I find it difficult to believe she could change her mind that easily as well.I still like thus book because it showed how different people react to loss and death. Some people decide to start living their lives to the fullest. Some people shut down and put up walls instead. The only thing that matters is that we all should be willing to let go and move forward and that doing so does not mean we are forgetting the dead. While this isn't my favorite from her, I would still definitely recommend this book because the authors books always have characters that sound so real and so good. I will always be checking out her books for new releases because I know what to expect and that's a truly good experience to have from an author.

Shaw I will admit that this series is one of my absolute favorites in contemporary romances as Foster never has disappointed with me with her stories. Since Healed by Love was one of my anticipated reads of the year I knew I was going to like the story as I have had the previous books in this series, but this book was a little different and I found myself falling in love with the heart of the story itself.Normally I tend to shy away from military romances and yet I am happy that I did not. This book was not another thriller, but instead focused on the aftermath of a war that cost both Nate and Jewel someone they both cared. The history between the characters was my favorite parts of the book. Their chemistry sizzled for the moment that they reunited and despite all the odds that stood against their love I was happy to see the duo finally reach their happy ending. One of the great parts about this book was Nate himself. I was expecting him to be somewhat harsh, perhaps even numb from the war and the loss that had suffered having lost his best friend, Rick who happens to be Jewel's brother as well. However Nate wasn't cruel or overwhelming. He was gentle and understanding with Jewel and that only made me favor his character that much more. As for Jewel's character I enjoyed her side of the story as well. The romance in this book is a little different than what I was hoping to see. It is a bit off in some ways most likely because of the history that the characters share with one another. I liked the romance but at the beginning to the middle of the story I would have liked to have seen the actual love story blossom into something a little more stronger and that is my only flaw with the book.Lastly I want to mention that this series can be read as stand alone novels or as a group. I would highly suggest reading the entire series in order for the simple fact that this series is too irresistible to pass up.

Unlikely Allies review By Carra at Making it Happen blog This is one of those books that has me on the fence, which means it's time for a pros and cons review...Pros:-The characters-even with their faults, I found them interesting and likable. Maggie's daughter CeCe truly steals the show, as does CeCe's relationship with Rick.-The plot and storyline-it's solid, and not one of those overdone tropes.-Every single scene between Rick and CeCe. Every. Single. One.Cons:-Those character faults-Maggie's attitude toward Rick and hot/cold inclination, as well as Rick's toward her, along with his seeming inability to really put Julia and his grandfather in their respective places...those things grated on me, especially for as long as they went on in the story.-How drawn out the story was-it felt like a lot of the first half to two-thirds of the book could have been compressed and still have told the overall story just as well.-The story didn't focus enough on Rick and Maggie, I felt their interactions were too few so I couldn't really feel them as a couple until the very end.The epilogue makes up for a lot, and gives a lot more insight into Maggie and Rick's lifetime, which was a nice way to end. Overall, it was a nice read-just a little more drawn out than I would have liked. But everyone should wish for a sweet, precocious child like CeCe, and even more so that whoever they spend their life with should have a relationship with their children like Rick does with CeCe.

I wanted to like this book so much more By Amazon Customer I wanted to like this book so much more, but in the end I just couldn't give it more stars. The sample I got drew me in, I'm a sucker for the non settling down guy and along comes a kid:), but once I started reading the story was more about the daughter and less about building the relationship between the two main characters. There were times I would get lost in the story, whether it be jumping around in dates, or doing a past conversation/memory thing, it ended up coming across as confusing and unorganized. I also felt like the same point was being repeated over and over again, I found myself skimming through pages when certain characters would talk about the same things. Overall not a horrible story, but just unorganized and drawn out

Rick and Maggie's relationship was a slow burn but it was well worth it. I enjoyed the whole cast form Emma to Matt. I like when a book has a great epilogue and I loved that the author showed years down the road and Cece all grown up and meeting her match!!! I would enjoy seeing what happens with Cece and Carter!!!
