Reading about her trials and tribulations and the struggles associated with being a young parent with cancer really hit home as another survivor. Her story and advice are spot on. Her motive to share and teach through her book are not only a tremendous testament to her willingness to help others but also a testament to her dedication and love for her children.

It is truly an inspiring story of a young lady and her very supporting family and how she handled the struggles in her life when fate gave her the diagnosis of cancer...Often times we take our lives for granted and complain over trivial things. It is those times we should go back and read such inspiring stories that give us so much hope.I love the part when author goes over what to say and what not to say to a person dealing with cancer. Lot of times people become uncomfortable talking to a friend or a relative and are not able to provide the true support they deserve. She did truly chose hope!!!!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Courageous and beautiful By Sally Vinita was always smart, funny, generous and elegant in medical school. It is evident that her spirit has soared even further through the challenges of not only one but two life-threatening conditions. Her resilience and grace is an inspiration to me and a beacon of hope. I am so proud of you, Vini, and I feel privileged to have you in my life although we are physically so far away from each other. Thank you for being you.

It's an average Saturday at the mall for Cira and her friends. As she locks eyes with a gorgeous man across the food court, her heart is set aflame and the world around them burns to ash. The Infernals are denizens of a Hellish parallel world, and they've come to claim Earth as their own. There's no better place to create their ideal being, a creature with all of their strengths and none of their weaknesses. Refusing to kneel, Cira is taken in by a new master, the same man she saw in the food court before the world ended. A half-breed with eyes full of hellfire and the patience of a saint, Baxa awakens Cira's urge to dominate, and an unfamiliar yearning to obey. His disinterest in the Infernal breeding program puts her at ease, and sets her nerves on fire. Can Cira resist this caramel skinned temptation, or will she be consumed by the inferno of desire?

What an amazing introduction to what promises to be a great series filled with demonic action and crazy lust-filled sex! But will it become more for Cira and Baxa? I can't wait to find out! Cira is going to be an awesome heroine with her feisty attitude! And Baxa just oozes bad boy sexual energy and charm! R.A. Sears has created an intense pairing between human and demon, with complex personalities and conflicting emotional and physical desires. The end of the world scenes are filled with action and demonic bad guys that left me hoping they will get what's coming to them!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Hell Comes to Earth! By ElleLainey ** I WAS GIVEN THIS BOOK BY THE AUTHOR, IN RETURN FOR AN HONEST REVIEW **(This was a Beta Read)-I knew I would love this book the minute I started reading it. The first line was a hook, then the follow up was fantastic. A world where Hell explodes onto Earth is a concept I'm familiar with, though it is rarely done justice. This story does it so well. The introduction to Baxa, who remains unnamed and mysterious until the last minute, is delicious. And so is he. Possibly the hottest lead male I've read for a while.I will say though, that I really love Cira. It is so refreshing to read a strong, confident female who isn't afraid of herself. I've read a lot lately about how 'unrealistic' it is for females to end up in bed with the male MCs early into a story, but this one is done with such style. It's Cira's choice when and how she wants to act on their mutual attraction. From the first moment she sets eyes on him she knows what she wants. And this girl, unlike so many others, isn't afraid to take what she wants, when she wants it.The concept is original and well done. The characters are well explored and nicely detailed for a novella. I could easily read book after book of these characters. R.A Sears has just become one of my favourite authors for this genre.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Hell from the top By Chris A short but hot look at the end of the world, with all hell breaking lose literally as demons rise up to enslave humanity to conduct genetic experimentation, with Cira being caught up in the end at a shopping mall shortly after seeing a hunk who turns out to be Baxa. But Cira is never one to take things lying down as you can gather from one of my favourite lines “I’d rather die on my feet than live on my knees, you leathery freak.” But Baxa might just be her match.Baxa is only half demon, so he doesn't see the forced breeding program in quite the same light as the pure bloods. "Children to bolster our ranks are the ultimate goal, but... I feel the journey should be enjoyed rather than clumsily rushed through.” And he does want to take his time with Cira.Slight elements of BDSM and a steamy scene make this an adult book, but I for one am looking forward to the next instalment including finding out what happened to Cira's friends for although they were only in the first couple of pages you did grow to like them.I received a free copy for an honest review.

Born and raised on a ranch, Teagan Baxter has never felt like she belonged. She has no interest in ranching or cowboys. All she wants is to pursue her dream of dancing on stage. The one person who believed in her dreams was her mother. On her death bed, she makes Teagan promise to not let anyone or anything stop her from pursuing her dream, not even her father. Teagan is determined to keep that promise. However, she didn’t count on the handsome rancher from Amarillo riding into her life. When Kage Jenkins hires on with the Circle B Cross ranch, it is with one purpose… to learn every phase of Colorado mountain ranching so he can buy a place of his own in Grand County. He feels an immediate connection to Teagan Baxter, but he refuses to pursue her because she was born to dance, not ranch. And he is determined not to do anything to interfere with her dreams.

By Michelle Sutton This story was compulsively readable and very well-written. The pacing felt just right and held my interest so I read it from start to finish in one day. There was believable tension between characters. Everything felt natural including their attraction to each other and their emotional responses to different things that came up.. Several times I was moved to tears and it may be that the heroine's emotional expression reminded me of other situations that I've experienced in my own life. Regardless of how it happened, this author had me in tears several times, but they were the kind that were rejoicing in the heroine's healing on her journey. They were not tears of grief or sorrow. The scenes that moved my heart were beautiful and healing. I dare say this book really brings out the author's passion for story-telling and is one of her best books. As soon as I got it I read it straight through. Highly recommended and worth every penny (and then some!)

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Enjoyable read By June I loved The Dreamer and the Cowboy. Debra Ullrick has written a wonderful story about a cowboy who wants to learn all he can about a different way of ranching than what he grew up doing with his father. When Kage gets a chance to spend some time on another ranch, he isn't expecting to find Teagan. He's just there to learn. But he is instantly drawn to Teagan and her spirit. When he finds her dancing he starts to realize that she is a very special person with big dreams. After losing her mother, Teagan stayed on the ranch for her father and sisters. Her father changed so much after her mom died and she wants him to be okay before she leaves. Then Kage shows up and all her plans go haywire. The story was fast paced and well written. Loved the characters and as usual, enjoyed Debra Ullrick's writing style. Hoping for more books in this series. Great, clean, romantic entertainment.

I fell in love with the characters from the very beginning. Once I started reading it, I couldn't put it down. Kage was the sweetest hero and Teagan was a precious heroine. Combined together they were a perfect match!!

*****UNTIL IT'S NOT is a Short Story intended to compliment the novel WITH WHOM WE SPEND OUR LIVES***** It's been five years since I've seen him. Five years of growing up and growing apart. But every second we've spent separated by time and distance will disappear the second I see him. The second I feel his touch. He's mine. I'm his. And nothing and no one will ever be able to change that. I may be young. And I may not know much of anything...but I know him, and therefor I know at least one thing for sure: Love is EVERYTHING in this life.

Thomas that shows us that love doesn't stop even when two people are separated by distance. I loved Miles, he was a totally stand-up kind of guy, and completely dreamy based off his actions alone. While this short story didn't have the typical ending you'd expect, no worries, because you can find out what happens years down the road to Gina and Miles in With Whom We Spend Our Lives.

All of my senses were on high alert, in what I could only describe as a beautiful struggle.I can tell that Author K.S. Thomas put so much heart into this short story, which translated into her characters and storyline. You could actually feel the deep, all encompassing love between Miles and Regina. A love that has endured, no matter how long the time and how far the distance. 'Until it's not' reminds you that there is no such thing as a simple love story, that it is, in fact, quite complex.I'm looking forward to reading the companion novel, 'With Whom we Spend our Lives,' to see if love can truly find a way.

This is a short, page turning story that will suck you in and make you want more, so much more. Miles Mackenzie and Regina Richards have been separated for five long years, but the love is still there. In five years of complete separation, things happen that will greatly affect them now. While moving on, can you reach back into your past and still find the love? Lives change, situations change, but the heart holds on. This story leaves you needing to know more, it's a pleasant tease of more to come with witty dialog and heartwarming characters.

15 of 15 people found the following review helpful. Strange is good By Vandalay Industries First of all I'm shocked there's only one other review for this book. Granted it's more of a fringe title, I guess, but all fans of dark fantasy should give this a read.I'll just give a brief overview. The story involves Bethany Black in a post-Rapture world after her entire family ascended to heaven. She was taken captive by a red demon lord and forced to work in a bar in the red demon zone(there are 3 types of demons: red, blue, and black). She befriends a highly non-PC demon named Bloato who overhears that there's one last gateway to heaven on Earth in Europe and the two set off to find it.Basically if you're a fan of dark comedy and fantasy stories this'll be right up your alley. If you like Sandman or Hellboy I think you'll dig this story. It's not for everybody as if you're deeply religious you may not like it. Just keep in mind this is a story based on biblical events - go in with an open mind. The sidekick Bloato's firggin hilarious - he's always got something to say whether it's offensive or references to movies but the lines fit in perfectly with the setting. Also the artwork looks great. And this is a complete story - it's not one where it ends with you wondering what the hell just happened. Even though the pace is off a bit in the last couple issues where it feels rushed it has a true, satisfying ending and I couldn't ask for anything more!

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Compelling comic book, but not without some flaws By mark This is very early Remender work, that's not as strong as some of his later books, but I was strangely drawn to Bethany Black as a character. Even at this point in his career, Remender knows how to make a cast of odd pieces that form together to a group of people you truly root for by the end of the book. The art wavers from slightly above to slightly below average at times, but there's no issues with the storytelling. Mostly the linework is a bit loose and rough for my personal likingThe "Omnibus" is a bit lacking though, no slipcase or ribbon in this package. I guess it all depends on what you expect from an Omnibus, but there's really not even that much extra beyond the issues. The variant covers are included, and there's a really heartfelt intro by Remender, but that's really it. Though fans of the original should probably just be happy that this Omnibus is even around considering it's meager original sales numbers.Overall, a very fun ride with compelling characters and brings up some interesting insight into Remender's thoughts on religion. Are there flaws? Sure. Is this Remender's best work? No. But I was hard pressed to put this one down once it got rolling and the Strange Girl: Bethany Black became one of my favorite female protagonists in the world of comics that is severly lacking of compelling ones.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Reminded me of Hellboy and Tank Girl, but it gets a bit heavy-handed at times, even amidst the wise-cracking By Wayne A McCoy 'Strange Girl Omnibus' collects all 18 issues of the series created by Rick Remender. At over 450 pages, it's definitely quite a collection, but it's also a labor of love by the author. The story takes place on an Earth where the Rapture has happened. Little Bethany lives with her family until that day, but when they are taken and she is left behind. Ten years later, the world has been taken over by demons and Bethany finds herself enslaved by one. Along the way, she's found out she can read the spell book the demon owns and she decides to escape and take a page with her. Along the way she is aided by a cast of characters both good and evil, including her best friend A blue crass-mouthed demon named Bloato, a pious soldier named Mouse, her ex-neighbor Tim and others. The in your face humor reminds me a bit of Hellboy and Tank Girl. The character takes a real journey along the way, and while I don't agree with the author's conclusion, I can appreciate his arguments. The book begins with an introduction by the author that possibly explains why he chose to tell this story. Over 18 issues, there are a variety of artists and artistic styles. I liked them all. As flawed and fallible as the characters were, I really liked them and felt an emotional attachment.I received a review copy of this graphic novel from Image Comics and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.

Warlock’s Cove, a picturesque village nestled on the rocky New England coast, is a small town like no other. Founded in the seventeenth century by two families driven out of Europe for practicing witchcraft, it has developed a uniquely tolerant and unconventional culture. Warlocks, vampires, and ghosts all attempt to co-exist peacefully there while keeping their secret from the outside world. Occasionally, however, they run into trouble when overly curious humans wander into town looking for trouble…or love. When Professor Dane Forrest accepts a teaching position at the local college, he sees it as an opportunity to learn more about the folktales and supernatural legends he has spent his career researching. What he doesn’t expect is to spend his first two nights in town rescuing a student from a vampire attack and then going on a date with the alleged vampire himself. Though he’s determined to maintain detached, unemotional outlook, he soon starts to realize why vampires are known as masters of seduction…and why they are considered as deadly as they are alluring. Meanwhile, on the other side of town, hundred-year-old vampire Simon is mourning the loss of the man he loved, who deliberately ended his existence by walking into the sunlight. Things begin to look up when Simon makes an intriguing new acquaintance down by the beach. Unfortunately, the young man in question seems to have as many secrets as Simon does. Faced with having his long-cold heart broken a second time, Simon wonders whether his best course of action might be to follow his former mate into a peaceful oblivion.

Great. All five parts of the story equal 205 pages which is a nice length but it also equals almost $8 and that's too much.So the story has promise but I can't justify spending the $8.

The Thorn (Rose Trilogy), by Beverly Lewis

From Booklist Impulsive and self-absorbed Hen, who left her Old-Order Amish family to marry a man of the world, and sweetly obedient Rose Ann, the younger sister upon whose slim shoulders falls responsibility for their crippled mother’s care, are both troubled in spirit. Hen now has a four-year-old daughter and yearns for a romanticized version of the Plain life she left behind, thus forsaking her husband for her parents’ house. Rose Ann finds solace in currying and riding her father’s driving horses, accompanied only by her dear childhood friend Nick, the rebellious now-grown foster son of their bishop who refuses to join the church. Suspicion, melodrama, and misdirected passions are the order of the day in best-selling, Christy Award-winning Lewis’ newest Amish romance, the first in a trilogy set in 1985 Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and introducing the two Kauffman sisters, one struggling to reconcile her background and beliefs with her obligations, and the other innocently unaware that not one but two young men want to claim her. --Lynne Welch

Young Rose Ann's best friend is a young man named Nick who was adopted by the bishop's family nine years ago. They are neighbors and Nick employed by Rose's father, but Nick is not Amish and does not want to be. Rose Ann's sister, Hen, who married an English man now wants to be Amish again despite her husband's protests and their poor daughter Mattie Sue is caught between them. Rose Ann's employer is hiding something and Rose Ann is interested in being courted by Silas Good. Will Nick leave the Amish and will Hen return to her rightful place with her husband? How does Rose Ann handle all of these changes?I was very intrigued by all of these forbidden situations among Rose Ann's family. I felt as I read through this novel that things were very unsettled and actually it didn't seem like there was a conclusion to many of these situations which is why I'm really looking forward to the next book. I thought Beverly Lewis did an excellent job developing characters and creating conflict. She really captures the spirit of the Amish and weaves a very entertaining novel with plenty of drama and a few surprises.

17 of 18 people found the following review helpful. The Thorn by Beverly Lewis By Sara Shoop This story is about two Amish sisters living in Pennsylvania. The younger, Rose Ann, has been baptized into the Amish faith and is currently dealing with courtship along with the daily care of her handicapped mother. The older sister, Hannah (`Hen' for short), left her Amish faith five years earlier to marry a non-Amish (English) man and is currently living in the `modern' world.Rose Ann's best friend is the adopted son of the Amish bishop, Nick, who has not embraced the Amish ways. She also has somewhat of a relationship with another Amish boy, Silas, and he is the one with whom she can envision a future. Rose Ann seems compassionate and caring, and she is totally devoted to her faith.Hen is married to Brandon, and is living in the modern world with him and her daughter, Mattie Sue. However, recently she feels conflicted with the way Mattie Sue is being raised in the modern world versus the way she was raised in the Amish world. She has a desire to return to her Amish roots, but she is not able to convince her husband to become Amish. To me, this book was bewildering. Maybe I am just not used to reading Amish books, but there were so many characters involved (especially minor characters who were mentioned once and then you were expected to remember who they were ten chapters later) and so many Amish words that I didn't know that it made me dizzy at times. Also, the character of Hen frustrated me. She chose to leave the Amish way of life to marry someone else, but now five years later she wants to go back and wants her husband to convert to the Amish faith. She says that she wants this so that her daughter can be raised is a moral way. So, the only way to instill values and morals in your child is to be Amish? (According to Hen, I guess my parents didn't do a very good job!)Also, I understand that this book is the first in a series of three, but none of the storylines were wrapped up at all. Almost every question was left hanging. With trilogies, there needs to be some carryover from one book to the next, of course, but this one just stopped abruptly.Even though this book had some frustrating parts for me, the story was still pretty good and fairly well written. If I had more knowledge of the Amish ways, I think I would have enjoyed this book more. If you are a fan of Amish fiction, you will probably enjoy this book. I will not purchase the future books in this trilogy, but I would consider getting them from the library.Thank you to Bethany House and Baker Publishing Group for the review copy of this book!

10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. The Thorn... By Kimmy McLaughlin I was recently provided the opportunity to read and review this book by Bethany House. I haven't read very many books by Beverly Lewis, but I do enjoy the occasional Amish-centered novel, so I thought I would give this one a try. I thought the character of Rose Ann was likable. She was kind and considerate and had a willingness to love those who were different. My favorite character was Nick. I feel like he was really misunderstood and misjudged. I felt really bad for him. To me, he was the character with the most depth. Everyone, with the exception of Rose Ann wrote him off as bad and never even gave him a chance. His own brother, who was constantly terrible to him, seemed to me to be the one who had the bad attitude, not Nick. The character of Hen really bothered me. I found her to be selfish and I thought she treated her husband unfairly. I also think he was painted in a very negative light simply because he was not Amish. It just seemed drastic that Hen would completely forsake her faith to marry someone who was agnostic and didn't want anything to do with her family. She wanted nothing to do with her own Amish roots and family and completely embraced the non-Amish life until 5 years later. Now, suddenly, she can't stand the "worldly" English ways and wants to go back, and she seems clueless as to why her husband might be confused about this.I've read my share of Amish fiction and I kinda felt this one was a bit predictable. The story moved rather slowly and then felt rushed at the end. The characters just lacked dimension to me. It all just seemed too typecast. I don't want to give it a negative review. I'm sure most Beverly Lewis fans will enjoy it, but this book just wasn't for me.*This book was provided for review by Bethany House.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. This is a very good short story By Melvin Hunt This trned oput to be an action packed book.A former French Foreign Legion officer has turned into a mercenary. His name is Hans Zorga. Hisloyalty lies with the Viet Cong. He tortures and commits battle on behalf of the Viet Cong. During the story he executes several prisoners being heldby the Viet Cong. To say the least he is wanted dead or alive by the American forces. The sniper group known as "Ritter's Critters" are awaiting an opportunity to kill Hans Zorga and his group. They at least get an opening and make short work of Hans Zorga. This is a very good short story.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. There is a film I particularly like - The Sorcerer By Peter Krynicki There is a film I particularly like - The Sorcerer, a remake of an old French film, The Wages of Fear. It's interesting because it begins in the present of the story introducing four main characters, then almost immediately flashes back explaining what caused each of them to come together and be chosen for an extremely difficult task. Then the task is shown. Robert Burgess has used a similar structure. The story begins in a present time, introduces the team, but then flashes back explaining what brought them all together for the mission. This makes Shellie, Rat, the Gypsy and the others more realistic, more human, rather then simply throwing them together out of nowhere. A nowhere with no past.

Jungle boogie By Eric Zillmer Yet one more exceptional telling of a hero-team's life in the Nam jungle, sent in to do what few others could do, if any. Gruesome details of the enemies tactics have you willing Ritter's Critters to succeed at what they do best, without stooping to the same despicable ways. Do they succeed? Take the short time to read this and find out. Well worth it!

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. No Damn Shade By Aari Has it been, like, 4-5 yrs since we've last followed the old /Hood Rat/ gang *Yoshibelle, Reese, Billy, and them*? I lost count, but It has been awhile, and I can say that NO SHADE was worth the wait. K'wan presented us with a dose of a little bit of everything, e.g. Crime, Romance, Thriller, Horror, and Suspense It's everything you expect from a K'wan novel, and MORE. There was an abundance of new characters he introduced us to with enough backstory to generate enough interest that'll make you wanting to know more about them. There were multiple story-lines going on at once, each individual character dealing with their respective problems, but K'wan carefully interwoven it to where it makes it one big circle and everybody is connected, one way or another. I couldn't ask for more from the big homie. I look forward to reading the next installment to the series. This story is 10/10 worthy and thensome! Congrats on your release day, AND your anniversary Mr. Foye.

Yoshi, Reese, Billy & the most loved to be hated Boots entertain us with tomfoolery at the highest level from the projects of Harlem NYC. It seems wedding bells are calling yet even with a joyous occasion what more can you expect the so called best friends reunion. Birthday bashes also turn up to bring back Don B. and his beloved Big Dawg Crew to the scene as well. Yes the gang is all here after almost five years of being gone.Along with the old regime you also got new faces worthy of hood ratchetness to the highest level. A dangerous lad who is infamously known as the Turk. He carries around a meat cleaver to make examples of those who try to upset the crown of the King in Harlem, Shai Clark. You got a mystery man who goes by the name of G that is stirring up drama under the nose of the hood mafia uptown. A slick cat from Miami named Trap and his bodyguard sister Moochie who are a one two combo waiting to happen. Then there are the new elements to Big Dawg who go by Wise and Dolla always in the mix causing mischief like no others can do it better. It seems Billy and Marcus are preparing to tie the knot but as we know if things can go wrong it will happen before it gets easier. Petty grudges, vanished ghosts reappear, more epic club fights and the new gang to watch out for is The Shower Cap Posse! As always K'wan delivers the comedy, the romance, drama like no other all while weaving separate issues of characters that seemingly have nothing to do with each other all into a melting pot of trouble waiting to boil over. I highly recommend this book and all other parts of the series. It's always a good time to read and enjoy some dysfunctional antics you know to only happen in the hood.

Definitely don't know why I thought he was Tech lol. But anyways this book definitely was a 5 star. And like the saying goes what's done in the dark comes to the light. Hopefully Marcus doesn't get into any trouble. I knew that trap dude was bad news. I can't say if I like him or not yet. Hopefully I can change my mind in the next book. Which I know they'll be another part. To this hood rat drama

About the Author Welcome to my author page, and thank you for coming! My whole life I had a large imagination. Playing video games was a normalcy for the escape into some uncharted and untold world where adventure awaited, which fueled my own creations.Insomnia had been a problem for me most of my life. This was another area that I was able to fill the space with waking dreams, praying that I would be able to get to sleep. It wasn't till I met my wife in July 2011 that I really started to contemplate what I wanted to do with my life. She was able to show me how happy I could be, just by coming into my life. So I figured that I could, and should, do that for my professional life.I started to read more books. I had been a visual entertainment consumer for much of my life, even though most of my gaming consisted of role playing games, of a heavily text base nature. Not having the visual feedback was a different feel. I liked it.It wasn't until after reading a few self-help books that I started contemplating what made me happy and how I might be able to turn that into a career. In August of 2012 I had a long conversation with my wife, who was supportive of the idea, and I started to write.Want to see more, come to my website for more at markbrandonpowell.comWant to get emailed instead, sign up now and I will email updates to you!Just copy and past in to a browser:MarkBrandonPowell.com/mailinglist

I would love to see more about Whisper and Fury, not to MENTION Wrath. The introduction of MAGES in the mix was VERY interesting. I'd like to hear more about how they came to be, how they figure in the overall scheme of this universe and where they will go from here.About the only criticism I have for it is the use of present tense. in my mind, present tense is extremely hard to use without some tense confusion. There were some typos here and there, but nothing that detracted from the story.Overall, I look forward to the next installment. This series has some GREAT potential!

Structurally, thematically and grammatically, it is an absolute mess. Normally I would give examples of the issues I mention, but in this case they are so numerous my review would be nearly as long as his book, and I came close enough to that anyway. The author chooses to write in present tense, which can be a challenge. However, he is horribly inconsistent with his tenses, switching to past tense quite often, even within a sentence. Another thing is that he has a large problem with homonyms. This is a common problem in self-published works, but he has a bigger problem than most. Then he has an issue with singular versus plural agreement between nouns and verbs; it makes reading an awkward experience. Also he seems to ignore the rules of possessives at random. Spelling is one area where he seems to be about average, though it is still a medium-level challenge. Then there are the dropped or missing words in a sentence, which tend to make the reader stop and back up in order to try to understand what seemed to be the point being made. Finally, as part of the author's writing style, he uses sentence fragments with abandon. As an occasional writing tool, it can be effective in portraying immediacy and seriousness. The problem is that the author uses the concept in almost every paragraph, and quite often more than once in a paragraph. The upshot of all these issues, along with several more I have just forgotten to mention, it is a battle for the reader to move on with the story and still be able to make sense out of what it seems the author is trying to say.As to his writing style, for this book it seems to break into two parts. For about the first third of the book, He jumps between time periods quite often. Now, some of them are titled as such, and I can understand his reasons for using it an expository method for the backstory. However, there are many other scenes where there is just a section marker, followed by something completely different. Two characters might be talking about where or when they should travel, and then after the section marker, they are in the midst of a battle with unknown adversaries where there had been no lead-up to it at all. For some reason, this seems to be a favorite style choice for him in the first part. As the book goes on, though, things seem to even out, and the reader does not get metaphorical whiplash from quick, unexplained scene changes. For the story itself, because of all the challenges I have mentioned, it was difficult to get much from the story arc. Katryce whined about the cybernetics that were forced upon her to the point of annoyance. Yes, we get that she was not happy about being forced into having them. We don't need another soliloquy on it. Then there is Whisper, one of the AIs. We get that she does not like humans, but she only has two basic insults, and they get very old far before the book ends. The joke is funny a couple of times, but several horses gave their lives being beaten to death by the repetition. In reading about the author, he seems so sincere in wanting to be a writer. Because of my review and general displeasure with this story, I decided to at least read a sample of his book "The Zero Class". I noticed from reading some reviews of that book, that others had similar issues to a similar extent with that book's contents that I do with "Whisper and Fury". The sample I read was from a major edit that the author did in answer to those concerns. While I still found all the issues I have mentioned, I noticed that there was a sincere attempt at improvement. At least for the sample, I was also able to follow and enjoy the story line; it was quite a bit more interesting.I abhor giving out one-star reviews because a writer puts a lot of work into their product, and especially if the author is willing to try to learn and improve. Also, they are putting themselves out in the public arena with more guts than I have; I would love to write, but time and fear prevent me. Because of all that, and what I saw in his other book sample, I put "Whisper and Fury" at two stars, though with no interest in reading further in that series.Good Luck, Mr. Powell. I hope you continue to learn and improve. You have a lot of room to grow.

“But these are vital aspects of marriage. If one cannot discuss them, what's the use in meeting at all? It's like trying to decide what you'll have for dinner without mentioning food." Wisteria Vasilver does wish to marry. Truly. But though she lives in Paradise, arranging a match is full of traps and pitfalls for the unwary ... or perhaps just for her. Nikola Striker, Lord of Fireholt, expects he'll wed -- someday. But not now, and never to a rich icicle of a woman like Miss Vasilver. No matter how much his parents might want the match, or his house might need her dowry. Besides, he has his own problems -- most of them people who need his help as a mind-healer. Lord Justin Comfrey, Viscount of Comfrey, would be more than happy to help Striker with his financial troubles, and not just to ensure that Miss Vasilver's dowry doesn't tempt Striker into marriage. If only he could find some way to make his proud, stubborn friend accept the money! Can three people of such different temperaments ever find their way to a more perfect Paradise?

A Rational Arrangement (Arranging Paradise Book 1), by L. Rowyn

About the Author L. Rowyn is the penname the author chose because it was too much work to change all of her existing social media to use a different name. She lives in the midwestern U.S. with one of her significant others, and sees her other SOs not nearly often enough, because teleporters have inconveniently not been invented yet. If you would like far, far too much information on her, she has been keeping a LiveJournal for over ten years, and never did learn how to write briefly. Her obligatory Author's Cat is named Kali. Kali doesn't know she's not a greatcat. Shhh.

Hogarth Let me tell you some of the reasons you should pick up this book.1. Wisteria does not get emotions. She can't even smile like a normal person. She's reduced to figuring out people's emotions by intellect, because she doesn't get them by gut. She has serious social skill problems, is brilliantly intelligent, and is functional in society because she's figured out (more or less) how to compensate for her flaws. I don't see a character like this in romance often, and when I do it's usually the male (and never one of the main characters). Wisteria is -delightful-. I loved her from the moment she showed up.2. The treatment of mental illness in this book is beautiful. Usually you don't get "deft and nuanced and compassionate view of mental illness" in the same books you get "rich and deep world-building of a secondary world" but you do in this one. I kept thinking, as I read, "God I wish we thought of mental illness like this in the real world."3. Speaking of the secondary world, this one is fabulously imagined. Romance novels can sometimes skimp on this aspect, but RA doesn't. And yet it still has that sort of Regency-ish flavor, without it feeling faked. Gorgeous!4. Speaking of which, there's religion in it, the religion makes sense, and it is not played as a thing for stupid folks, or as a way to paint people as convenient villains because they believe in something. It's refreshing to see a fantasy world that treats religion as a normal and vital part of society (and goes further by tying it into the magical system without it being unexamined by its own practitioners). People believe in this book. They also question. They debate their beliefs and the finer points of their catechism. Wonderful.5. This is a poly romance where all three parties fall in love with one another, and it makes sense that they do because they fill unique needs in one another. Many poly romances seem forced, or one or more relationships are hand-waved: "Yes, of course they live happily ever after." It's rare that we see all three people get enough attention that you really think it'll work out in the end. Justin, Nik, and Wysteria are all very different from one another, and they love one another in very different ways, and it all makes perfect sense for them as people.6. It's a long book. A body gets tired of romance novels that last only 200 pages. This one's a nice, hefty tome! You will be living in this world for a while! (And happily, because it is an awesome world.)7. It has giant talking cats in it. Win.On the whole, this is a deeply humane story, one that leaves you smiling and feeling hope and like the world's a brighter place. You will like people more. You will think there's more potential for things. It's a feel-good story in the best of ways, and the fact that it's well-written and engaging is just icing on the glorious cake. Go get it. :)

17 of 18 people found the following review helpful. I really liked it--until the last 25% By MBlount The positives:1. Wisteria. She's a singular and wonderful character. I don't think I've read another book about someone who is both rational and passionate, but it makes for fascinating interactions between her and the other characters.2. Blessings. The idea of people being born with certain gifts bestowed on them by the 'Saviour' (which seemed to be another name for God) was intriguing, as was the fact that the same gift varied from person to person. I liked that Rowyn made it so bearers could choose whether and how to use their gifts--that some people chose not to help when helping would be inconvenient just demonstrated that they were human. The idea that some mental illness is due to demon-infestation and some to the improper growth or development of people's mind structures was also very original.3. The greatcats. I'm always a fan of intelligent felines who can talk, so the greatcat race was a joy, especially in the partnership and mutual appreciation between Ansther and Lord Nikola.4. Lord Justin. Given Lord Nikola's verging-on-saintly personality, Lord Justin made a fitting foil. I liked that the two men were profoundly different from each other, and that Justin could still be loved despite his evident character flaws.5. Relationships from the beginning up to 75% into the book. The fears and conflicts that threatened the relationship between Justin and Nikola were also quite grounding and made the way their relationship developed feel very real. Similarly, the way Wisteria and Nikola's relationship grew was fun and seemed quite realistic.Cons:1. Justin's relationship with Wisteria. It felt a bit less believable than the way Nikola's feelings for her grew, perhaps because Justin's interest in Wisteria seemed abrupt, and the relationship between them felt rushed.2. Relationships between the three toward the end of the book. Near the end of the book it was clear that Wisteria understood Justin a lot better than Nikola did--if we'd seen that sooner, Wisteria's feelings for Justin would have made more sense, as would Justin's reaction to her. As it was, it felt like Justin was simply piggybacking onto Nikola's liking and desire for Wisteria, and Wisteria's response to Justin was simply sexual attraction--both of which made the last 25% of the book weaker.3. The plot. It was obvious halfway through that the book was heading toward multiple marriage. That was fine, but the complete lack of any peril or sense of risk undercut the characters' courage in making their choices. At the end it all seemed to happen too easily and was much too easily accomplished, especially given Justin's fears and misunderstandings with Nikola earlier in the book. "All obstacles can be overcome by talking" seemed the message, and that's just not true in real life. The fact that it all turned out to be so easy for the three of them was disappointing, because it undercut the strength and originality of the rest of the book. It also made their relationship feel too much like a fairy tale "and they all lived happily ever after", rather than the living, growing, challenging lifework that a wholly-committed marriage really is. It takes a lot of courage to embark on a marriage with just two flawed human people involved, much less a marriage with multiple partners.4. The graphic descriptions of sexual intercourse. The author spent a fair amount of time and detail describing Nikola and Justin having sex early in the book. It seemed excessive, especially as she spent much less time and detail on other partnerings. I guess she could have meant to educate those readers who wonder how sex works between two men, but it didn't really add anything else to the story, other than making it clear that since neither Nikola nor Justin was vocal about their feelings, even in bed, Nikola had every reason not to know how Justin felt about him, and vice versa. At any rate, that early section left me unnecessarily worried the book was going to focus on sex not relationship, when that wasn't the case at all.All in all, a quite good, very intriguing book, and I hope the author writes more stories in this world she's created.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Om nom nom nom By JB Tarangson The world is richly imagined. The people are beautiful and vibrant and multi-faceted. There is a brief interlude for violence which I found jarring and distressing, against the generally calm and peaceful backdrop. There are giant talking cats. I love that the main character who's socially impaired, and intellectually brilliant, is the lady. I adore the treatment of mental illness, and envy the characters' relative ease with recovering from trauma (just add magic! wish we could all heal so easily). I especially appreciate the poly triad, and the way it comes together, with fits and starts. A+ would romance again!
