Granted it's more of a fringe title, I guess, but all fans of dark fantasy should give this a read.I'll just give a brief overview. The story involves Bethany Black in a post-Rapture world after her entire family ascended to heaven. She was taken captive by a red demon lord and forced to work in a bar in the red demon zone(there are 3 types of demons: red, blue, and black). She befriends a highly non-PC demon named Bloato who overhears that there's one last gateway to heaven on Earth in Europe and the two set off to find it.Basically if you're a fan of dark comedy and fantasy stories this'll be right up your alley. If you like Sandman or Hellboy I think you'll dig this story. It's not for everybody as if you're deeply religious you may not like it. Just keep in mind this is a story based on biblical events - go in with an open mind. The sidekick Bloato's firggin hilarious - he's always got something to say whether it's offensive or references to movies but the lines fit in perfectly with the setting. Also the artwork looks great. And this is a complete story - it's not one where it ends with you wondering what the hell just happened. Even though the pace is off a bit in the last couple issues where it feels rushed it has a true, satisfying ending and I couldn't ask for anything more!

Compelling comic book, but not without some flaws By mark This is very early Remender work, that's not as strong as some of his later books, but I was strangely drawn to Bethany Black as a character. Even at this point in his career, Remender knows how to make a cast of odd pieces that form together to a group of people you truly root for by the end of the book. The art wavers from slightly above to slightly below average at times, but there's no issues with the storytelling. Mostly the linework is a bit loose and rough for my personal likingThe "Omnibus" is a bit lacking though, no slipcase or ribbon in this package. I guess it all depends on what you expect from an Omnibus, but there's really not even that much extra beyond the issues. The variant covers are included, and there's a really heartfelt intro by Remender, but that's really it. Though fans of the original should probably just be happy that this Omnibus is even around considering it's meager original sales numbers.Overall, a very fun ride with compelling characters and brings up some interesting insight into Remender's thoughts on religion. Are there flaws? Sure. Is this Remender's best work? No. But I was hard pressed to put this one down once it got rolling and the Strange Girl: Bethany Black became one of my favorite female protagonists in the world of comics that is severly lacking of compelling ones.

Reminded me of Hellboy and Tank Girl, but it gets a bit heavy-handed at times, even amidst the wise-cracking By Wayne A McCoy 'Strange Girl Omnibus' collects all 18 issues of the series created by Rick Remender. At over 450 pages, it's definitely quite a collection, but it's also a labor of love by the author. The story takes place on an Earth where the Rapture has happened. Little Bethany lives with her family until that day, but when they are taken and she is left behind. Ten years later, the world has been taken over by demons and Bethany finds herself enslaved by one. Along the way, she's found out she can read the spell book the demon owns and she decides to escape and take a page with her. Along the way she is aided by a cast of characters both good and evil, including her best friend A blue crass-mouthed demon named Bloato, a pious soldier named Mouse, her ex-neighbor Tim and others. The in your face humor reminds me a bit of Hellboy and Tank Girl. The character takes a real journey along the way, and while I don't agree with the author's conclusion, I can appreciate his arguments. The book begins with an introduction by the author that possibly explains why he chose to tell this story. Over 18 issues, there are a variety of artists and artistic styles. I liked them all. As flawed and fallible as the characters were, I really liked them and felt an emotional attachment.I received a review copy of this graphic novel from Image Comics and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.
