Two coeds exit the bathroom across the foyer from me, both way overdressed for students attending a lecture, and one is applying lipstick while the other giggles uncontrollably. They walk past me and I hear hushed comments about how they "just had to see for themselves" if he's as hot in person and "damn security for kicking them out" before they push through the doors I've just entered My curiosity is now definitely piqued. Who the hell is the guest lecturer if there is security here? Maybe it's one of Dad's friends. Stranger things have happened. "So you see, it was the Grammys-it's not like you can say no to him when he just won album of the year and asks you to hang out. Little did I know," the male voice says in a low tenor that's almost a contradiction: smooth like velvet but with a rasp that pulls at my libido and makes me think of bedroom murmurs and hot sex, "that I'd go with him and walk into a private club where everything is laid out like candy-drugs, women, record producers. He turned to me and said, 'Welcome to Hollywood, son.' Shit, I looked at Vince here and thought is this what I have to do to make it here? Play this game? Or can I do this the old-fashioned way? And I don't mean sleep my way to the top either." The room erupts into laughter with a few whistles as I clear the doorway. I recognize him immediately. He may be on the stage at a distance but his face, his presence, is unmistakable. I've seen it gracing tabloids. TMZ, Rolling Stone-you name it, he's been on their cover. He's Hawkin Play, front man and lead singer of the highly popular rock band Bent. And according to his most recent press coverage, a man on the path to a drug-fueled destruction. So that exaggeration most likely means he was caught in possession of some drugs. Why in the hell is he here? I walk farther into the auditorium and falter at the top of the steps because just as my ears are attuned to his voice, my body reacts immediately to the overpowering sight of him. And I sure as hell don't want it to. I tell myself it's just because I need some action. That my battery-operated boyfriend is getting old and the visceral reaction of my racing pulse or the catch in my breath is just from my dry spell. Well, not really a complete dry spell per se, but rather a lack of toe-curling, mind-numbing, knock-you-on-your-ass sex that I haven't been able to find lately. It's the good lays that are hard to come by. Don't even think about it. He may be hot, but shit, I grew up with Colton, the ultimate player, so this girl knows what a player sounds and acts like. And from everything I've seen splashed across headlines and social media, Hawkin plays the part to perfection. But the notion that just like the drug rumors blasted across the magazines, his reputation as a player could be manufactured just as easily lingers in my subconscious. I stare at him again as the class laughs, his ease in front of a large crowd more than apparent, and I immediately wonder if I had a chance with him if I'd take it.

Bromberg is a fantastic writer, but this didn't do it for me. Spoilers ahead!The inner monologue was very very long....so long that I was skipping through most of it to get to the actual conversations. And something irked me about Quinlan willing to do the threesome with Hawkins best friend...I almost gave up after that scene.It's never a good sign in a book if you find yourself skipping over page after page, but the constant long explanations in their inner monologues before any word spoken between them was just to long and I'm sorry to say, bored me.

This is Hawkin Play (lead singer for the rock band Bent) and Quinlan Westin’s storyline. We were first introduced to Quinlan throughout Colton and Rylee’s storylines-Quinlan is Colton’s sister. SWEET ACHE can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty.Told from alternating first person points of view (Hawkin and Quinlan) SWEET ACHE focuses on the building relationship between our leading couple, and Hawkin’s rapport and association with the band, and his immediate family. Hawkin’s life appears to be spiraling out of control but behind the scenes, Hawke continues to take the fall for his twin brother’s mistakes. Serving a twelve week sentence, on his brother’s behalf, Hawkin finds himself the guest lecturer at the local college where he meets the beautiful and not easily played Quinlan Westin. What ensues is Hawkin’s seduction of Quin reinforced by a bet with his fellow band mate.The relationship between Quin and Hawke is acrimonious at the start. Quinlan is all too aware of the celebrity lifestyle having lived through her brother’s years as the number one Indy driver in the world, and Hawkin Play pushes all of Quin’s buttons within the first few minutes of introduction. As a rock star and celebrity, Hawkin is used to getting what he wants-and he wants Quinlan before the end of his ‘term served.’ As Hawke pursues Quin, the band sits on the sidelines watching the train wreck unfold. The $ex scenes are erotic, provocative, and graphic. Hawke likes to talk dirty in the bedroom.Hawkin’s family history is dark and disturbing. Colton’s past was rife with abuse and neglect; Hawkin’s past sees a mother’s desperate attempts to hide the truth and a father’s failure. Our hero shoulders the blame for so many family issues, that counseling should be a mandated part of his everyday life.The secondary characters include Indy drive Luke Mason, whose attraction to Quin is all encompassing but Quin plays Luke for a fool and uses the race car driver to forget her attraction to Hawkin Play. Quin’s best friend Layla is quick to give our heroine a push in the right direction; Colton and Rylee have cameo appearances (some via phone or text) throughout the story. We are also introduced to the band BENT-Vince, Gizmo, and Rocket, as well as their lawyer and best friend Benji. Hawke’s brother Hunter is the requisite evil as drug addiction spiked with jealousy throw our hero off his game and head long into more self-deprecation, grief and guilt.SWEET ACHE is an emotional and intense storyline. We get up close and personal with our hero as he struggles to come to terms with his ailing mother, and drug addicted brother-both of whom destroy a little of our hero’s soul with every encounter. Quinlan is a strong heroine whose prior relationships have been less than successful, but it is her need to ‘save’ Hawke that is at the heart of the story.K. Bromberg will captivate your imagination; her passion for emotional and broken heroes is intoxicating and inspiring. The destructive nature of childhood trauma, drug addiction and mental illness is dramatic in its’ presentation; striking in its’ reality; alarming in its’ reach. The characters are colorful, charismatic and real; the premise impassioned; the romance erotic and fierce. The volatile need for acceptance and forgiveness pushes the envelope of love and a happily ever after.

I had not read anything by this Author before and I read the blurb on Netgalley and thought I would give it a try. A book about a Rocker is always a good read and this really was. Though this is not what I was expecting, it had so much heart to this story and I loved that not your typical Sex, Drugs and Rock and Roll. There were those things but it was written in a fresh way. These two characters were awesome, from their first meeting the sexual tension was on and the "will they, won't they get together and stay together" was at times sexy, fun and so tender and open.Hawkin is your sexy, rocker but there is so much more going on with this guy. Without giving away major plot points, he had a real tragedy happen to him as a child that molds him into taking care of others at the expense of himself, especially where his twin brother is concerned. I wanted to give him a big hug so many times through this book, but there were times I wanted to slap some sense into him also. Quinlan (I just love that name for a girl) is a smart girl, gives as good as she gets and knows what she wants, even Hawke when she knows she should be running away from him. Their chemistry is so potent that neither can deny the other, even while working through all the obstacles in their way.This is the first time I have read this Author and I loved her writing style and she did a great job of making me like and care for her characters. I so want to read her other books in this series. From reading the Authors comments the first four books in the series should be read in order but five and six (this is book six) are stand alone. Quinlan is in the first books in the series because they are about her brother Colton.
