Even though he's been beaten nearly to death, chained to a wall, and locked away deep within Tsotha's fortress, Conan is by no means out of commission. While the foes and betrayers who stripped him of his crown celebrate their acquisition of Aquilonia, Conan plans his escape. However, an additional, seemingly insignificant foe from Conan's past stalks Tsotha's horrific dungeons waiting for a chance to kill the legendary barbarian. A great introduction to Conan the king!

It took place at the end of the credits, and showed Arnold Schwarzenegger as an aged King Conan, brooding on his throne. Somehow that single shot had as much power as the entire film, and there was always the promise that the story of that scene would someday be told. Unfortunately, that promise never came through. Endless incompetent Hollywood script writers, actors, and directors have managed to produce nothing but Conan garbage since then. It is only in the realm of comic books that the promised power of that scene has been realized."King Conan: The Scarlet Citadel" is that scene. And it is powerful. And aged King Conan, grey and scarred from a lifetime of battle, sits on his throne. Surrounded by the trappings of a victorious king--fine wine drunk from golden goblets, pretty dancing girls at his feet--he is still a powerful and commanding warrior. Hither comes Pramis, a scholar from Nemedia, under orders to talk to King Conan, and to put his stories down into a document that would become known as the Nemedian Chronicles. And if you know anything about Conan, that should give you goosebumps right there."The Scarlet Citadel" is one of my favorite Robert E. Howard Conan stories. It is infused not only with Howard's primal energy, but it also is touched by the weird world of Lovecraft and filled with strange monsters and sanity-shocking horrors. Conan, trapped by intrigue and magic, fights his way through the horror-haunted dungeons of Tsotha-Lanti and the Scarlet Citadel. A trusty yard of iron in his hand, Conan meets things even he cannot overcome and is put on the defensive as he flees for his life. Meanwhile, his kingdom of Aquilonia burns as the upstart Prince Arpello tries to steal the throne, backed by the kings of Ophir and Koth.Truman's adaptation of "The Scarlet Citadel" is heavy with maturity. Not only in theme, of an old warrior looking back on his past, but in execution. In his introduction, Tim Truman says that it is only four years of experience writing Conan that allowed him to craft something as daring as "King Conan: The Scarlet Citadel." The idea that it was ultimately Conan who dictated his own story, who essentially wrote the Nemedian Chronicles is a bold idea that works beautifully. The framing device of the old King Conan spinning yarns to a young scribe works perfectly, and infuses a familiar tale like The Scarlet Citadel with fresh life. This is adaptation at its finest.Maturity also defines the work of the art team of Tomas Giorello and Jose Villarrubia. I can't believe that at one point in time I wasn't happy with their Conan artwork. Over four years, they have refined their skills and perfected their craft until they have become the quintessential Conan art team. Their interpretation of an aged King Conan is nothing short of phenomenal. I believe completely in the reality of their characters. And Giorello gets extra props for his handling of the monsters in "The Scarlet Citadel." It is a rare artist that can draw both the human and the monstrous with such fluency."King Conan: The Scarlet Citadel" is not only the best Conan comic of modern times, it is one of the best comics period. This is good in every single way a comic book can be good, in every way a literary adaptation can be good, and in every way Conan can be good.

By Leo Hott Conan like Tarzan is one of those characters that literally out grows their creator!!! Conan's success during Robert E. Howard's life time led him to cannibalize many of his other story's to turn them into Conan tales to earn some money. You can hardly blame him it must have been difficult indeed to earn a living submitting to the pulp's! Lets face it he only got paid around 2 cents a word and each story had its limitations on length if he wanted to see his story published!!! Again with frank Frazetta's cover art breathing new life into these old pulp tales we see many of Robert E. Howards hero's re-written as Conan tales. As well as Publishing houses beginning to cash in on some of Howard's other hero's giving many of the story's a sense of deja-vue! The demand for Conan material was growing as big as the Barbarian himself spilling over into the world of "Comic Books" !!! Conan's popularity was still on the rise and there was still a further demand by those that didn't want a watered down version of Conan as offered by the censored Comic Book's, They wanted their post Antediluvian hero with his sword fully sharpened and artwork fully explicit so the over sized "Savage Sword of Conan" was born. Not long after that Hollywood tried to give us a Conan that had already been written & re-written so many times over that there was now two Conan's! "Conan #1" being Robert E. Howard purest Conan fans version & "Conan #2" being everything Howard ever wrote turned into Conan tales plus many other author's Conan offerings turning basically into the "Conan" of the Nemedian chronicle's! The Nemedian Chronicle's are indeed a ingenious way to keep the Conan Mythos's alive pleasing both R.E.H. purist's & Conan fans alike equally pleased. Enter the Graphic Novel a format that has flourished where the movies have failed...another chance to bring not only Conan back to readers but the vibrant world R.E.H. created to be the background for our brawny hero's adventures! A expansive & colorful world that's flora & Fauna are often as deadly as the antagonist Conan faces in it!!! "King Conan: The Scarlet Citadel" thrives in Graphic Novel format Bringing Conan & his Hyperborean world to brilliant , vivid & beautiful life yet again in the year 2015 to thrill old & new fans alike!!! Dark Horse has two series that I highly recommend the "Conan" series starting with volume #0 "Born on the battle field" & the "King Conan" series both offer Graphic Novel interpretation's of Robert E. Howard's original works as well as tales from the Nemedian chronicle's! In the brief time Robert E. Howard was on this Earth he created adult fantasy heroes like Stan Lee pumped out Super Heroes!!! Howards prose & the step above "comic book art" that the graphic novel should provide are the perfect marriage & a great introduction to the works of Robert E. Howard! If my wallet was fat enough I would love to see dark Horse bring all of R.E.H.'s hero's to life in Graphic Novels!

As a fan of Conan I'd felt the series had dropped off since Busiek and Nord's incredible run but these King Conan book have restored my faith. The artist gets a lot of really cool monsters and stuff to draw in this one as that's the main selling point for me. Maybe they could have squeezed in another issue or two but it was great while it lasted. Also the covers by Darick Robertson are incredible.
