NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLERIn this rich, involving novel from Danielle Steel, a woman’s life catapults from the old to the new, as she learns to seize the moment.   COUNTRY   Stephanie Adams is a devoted stay-at-home mother, married to a successful lawyer in northern California, in a dead marriage she’s stayed in for years for the sake of her children. Then, on a ski trip in Squaw Valley, her fifty-two-year-old husband dies suddenly and all bets are off.   Despite her children’s grief, and her own conflicting emotions and loneliness, Stephanie tries to move on, but struggles to find herself as an independent individual after years of giving up her life for everyone else. A spur-of-the-moment road trip and fork in the road lead her to Las Vegas, the Grand Canyon, and a chance meeting—and her whole life changes forever.   She meets country music megastar Chase Taylor, who opens his whole world to her. Stephanie is no longer the same woman, and can’t be anymore. A new man. A new life. The excitement of Nashville. She discovers not only Chase, but herself. The music is bittersweet and the lyrics true in his dazzling, exotic, and honest world.   As it deftly explores the complex ties between spouses, children, lovers, and friends, and dances between the past and the future, Danielle Steel’s moving novel brilliantly captures the shock of sudden loss, and the freedom it can bring. Here America’s most beloved novelist shares the enduring power of seizing the day. Carpe diem.

The ski conditions were perfect, better than they ever had been for Bill, Stephanie, and their two favorite couples, the Freemans and Dawsons, with whom they spent Presidents’ Weekend every year. It was a tradition they had observed for ten years, a sacred pact that none of them would break.Alyson Freeman had come, even days before she had given birth to their last baby, their third child, two years before, refusing to miss the great weekend they always shared. And since Brad was a doctor, she said she felt safe being there. It was only a four-hour drive from home, and although Brad was an orthopedic surgeon and not an obstetrician, she knew he would see to it that she got the best care, if she gave birth in Tahoe over the long weekend. Their Presidents’ Weekend was a date they never broke, and this year was no different. It was meant to be an adult weekend, free of children and responsibilities. It was no longer an issue for Stephanie and Bill, whose children were dispersed and working in Atlanta and New York, for their first steps on their fledgling careers, and in Rome, where their younger daughter was spending her junior year abroad. Fred and Jean Dawson’s daughters were both married and lived in Chicago, having married brothers. But even Brad and Alyson, whose children were much younger than the others’, agreed not to bring their kids, and left them with an au pair at home.Fred and Jean had been married the longest and were slightly older than the others. To those outside the close circle of friends, they appeared to have the perfect marriage. Fred had invented software that had made him a fortune, and had gotten in on the dot-com boom right at the beginning. Their palatial home in Hillsborough was testimony to his success, along with his plane, his Ferrari and Aston Martin, and Jean’s stable full of Thoroughbred horses, which were her passion. They had money to burn, and Fred’s humble origins were a dimly remembered dream now.Jean had been a waitress in Modesto when he met her, from a dirt-poor family that had just lost their farm when her father died in an accident, leaving five starving kids and a widow who looked twenty years older than she was. Jean rarely saw her siblings anymore and had nothing in common with them. She had married Fred thirty years before, and was fifty-one years old. She’d had her eyes done, an excellent face-lift by a plastic surgeon in New York, she stayed in shape, took terrific care of herself, and got Botox shots three times a year. She was a beautiful woman, although her face showed almost no expression, which was fine with her. Above all, she never wanted to be poor again, and as long as she and Fred stayed married, she knew she never would be.She knew that he had cheated on her for most of their marriage, and she no longer cared. She hadn’t been in love with him in years. She could have sued him for a fortune in a divorce, but she liked the lifestyle he provided, the perks, and the status of being Mrs. Fred Dawson. She said jokingly to her friends that she had made a pact with the devil, and the devil in her life was Fred. She had no illusions about him, and no desire to change anything about the way she lived. She had her horses and her friends and went to visit her daughters in Chicago if she wanted to see them, and she and Fred had an unspoken arrangement that worked for both of them. There was an undeniable edge to her, born of the way things had worked out, and she didn’t have a high opinion of her husband, or men like him. She believed now that all men cheated, given half a chance to do so, and her husband certainly did, and had for years. He slept with secretaries, assistants, and women he met at cocktail parties, on business, or in elevators, and women he sat next to on planes. The only women he didn’t sleep with, she was certain, were her closest friends. At least he had the good taste not to do that. And most of them were too old for him. But he wouldn’t have done that to her anyway. He wasn’t a bad guy, just a cheater, with a weakness for twenty-five-year-olds.They had a civil relationship, based on a mutual arrangement that worked for both of them, even if it was devoid of warmth. She had forgotten what it was like to feel loved by a man, and no longer thought about it. She had everything else she wanted, materially, which by now was more important to her. She wouldn’t have given that up for anything in the world. They had recently bought a Picasso for their dining room, for which Fred had paid just under ten million dollars. They had one of the most important art collections in the West.Jean’s one soft spot was how much she cared about her friends, Alyson and Stephanie. She loved the weekends they spent together, and talking to them every day. She had opportunities and luxuries they didn’t, but neither of them was jealous of her, and she knew it. They didn’t envy the state of her marriage either, or the emptiness of her relationship with Fred, but despite the choices she had made, there was a human side to Jean, and an honesty about herself that they all found endearing. There was no pretense to Jean, she loved being rich and Mrs. Fred Dawson, and it was worth anything to her to stay that way. It was almost like a career choice she had made. Corporate wife of multimillionaire, who was rapidly on his way to becoming a billionaire in the high-tech world. Fred Dawson had a Midas touch, which men admired and envied, and the power he exuded was like an aphrodisiac to women. And Jean bought more Thoroughbreds, fabulous Impressionist paintings, and owned more Hermès and Louis Vuitton and Graff jewelry than almost any woman in the world. And yet she was perfectly capable of enjoying a weekend in Squaw Valley with their four best friends. They had driven up from Hillsborough in Fred’s new Ferrari. And she always referred to the three couples as the Big Six. Fred had already been successful when they met, though not on the scale he was now. Even Jean admitted that the amount of money he had made in recent years was ridiculous, but it suited her just fine. She felt like a queen, and in her world she was. But her bright mind, quick wit, and honesty about herself and others kept her from being obnoxious. She could be harsh at times, born of disappointment about her marriage. But her friends loved her as she was, even if her husband didn’t. He was only attracted to young women, and no matter how great she looked, Jean had been too old to appeal to him for years. At fifty-five, Fred preferred women under thirty, and considered them a status symbol to feed his ego, which Jean knew well. No matter how much plastic surgery she had or how many Botox shots, or how diligently she worked out with her trainer, Fred hadn’t been attracted to her in years. And Jean had no illusions about it. It took a strong ego for Jean to no longer be affected by it, and she availed herself his credit cards at every opportunity to keep her morale high. It worked for her.Brad and Alyson Freeman were the opposite of Jean and Fred. After twelve years of marriage, they were still madly in love, and Alyson thought her husband walked on water. She had been a rep for a pharmaceutical company, and at thirty-five she had begun to think she would be single forever, until her Cinderella story happened. Brad had noticed her when she was dropping drug samples off at his office. Still a bachelor at forty-one, and enjoying every minute of it, he was the object of all his nurses’ fantasies, and Alyson’s as well. He was the successful orthopedic surgeon they all dreamed of, and he fell for Alyson like the proverbial ton of bricks. Eight months after they started dating, they were married, and Alyson’s life changed forever. She worked for a few more months until she got pregnant, and had been busy with their three children ever since. Twelve years later, she still talked about her husband like a modern-day saint, grateful for everything he did for her, thrilled with the life they shared. He was a devoted, loving husband and a great father to their kids, and whenever Jean made one of her acerbic comments that all men were cheaters given the chance, Alyson defended Brad hotly and told her he had never so much as looked at another woman since they were married, which caused Jean to give her one of her wry smiles.“I know Brad is perfect, and the most faithful man on the planet, but he’s still a guy,” she commented. And Alyson’s body still looked great, although she rarely had time to dress up anymore. She was too busy with their kids. But she worked out at the gym several times a week, and played tennis, and she loved their ski weekends with their friends. And even Stephanie teased her occasionally about how she idolized Brad and how in love with him she was. But it was sweet to see. They were obviously happy, Brad had done well, their kids were adorable and were eleven, six, and two, and they had a beautiful home in Ross, one of the most luxurious and affluent suburbs in Marin. And they really seemed to have an idyllic life. Brad was constantly loving and solicitous and was as in love with Alyson as she was with him. And he really was the perfect dad. He was their older son’s Cub Scout leader, took their daughter to her soccer games and ballet on the weekend, and had a “date” with Alyson at the best restaurants in San Francisco every Saturday night. And he was one of the most respected surgeons in his field. And at fifty-three, he was still a very handsome man, and looked years younger than he was. Each of the two couples represented an extreme on the scale of marital bliss. Alyson and Brad were madly in love, and Fred and Jean had settled for an arrangement that worked for both of them but, even to those who knew them well, appeared to be devoid of love.Stephanie and Bill were somewhere in the middle, having had their ups and downs and a few hard knocks in their twenty-six years of marriage. The first eight or nine years had been wonderful and everything Stephanie had hoped they would be, having babies, buying their first home in the city, Bill becoming a partner in the law firm he worked for, and doing well. They had met in college at Berkeley, while she was an undergraduate and Bill was finishing law school, and had married shortly after she graduated. She had gotten a terrific job at a very successful ad agency, which used her writing and marketing skills, and which she was excited about, until she had problems in her first pregnancy and was put on bed rest for five months. Michael, their first child, was born prematurely, and after that, with Bill’s encouragement, she never went back to work. She was a stay-at-home mom and enjoyed her life, until things started to get hectic as the kids got older, and there were times when she regretted not having kept her hand in the workforce, to have a sense of accomplishment of her own. She talked to Bill about it once their younger daughter Charlotte started school, but Bill was insistent that he preferred her being at home for their kids, so for several years now she had given up the dream of ever working again.

You know you will always get a good story from her and also a happily ever after. It is the road to the HEA that is always quite a ride.In the book, 'Country' Stephanie Adams has just lost her husband. He was only fifty two years old and died of a heart attack during a ski trip while he was on the slopes. This has really turned Stephanie's world upside down. She had lost herself in being a wife to Bill and mother to her children. The children are all grown with her son living in Atlanta, one daughter in New York and the other daughter in Italy. Who is she and what is she going to do are questions she keeps asking herself. One day, only four months after Bill's death, while driving home from a vacation with old friends she takes a wrong turn and this will change the course of her life. Life with her husband, when he was alive, was always calm and predictable. Stephanie decided she was going to be adventuresome and proceeds to drive to Las Vegas. She had always wanted to go there. After spending a night there she decided she wanted to see the Grand Canyon and what better time than now.She was astounded by the beauty of the canyon and during her hike came upon a single fellow who struck up a conversation. They continued on the hike together and felt at ease with one another. This fellow wasn't Stephanie's usual type. His name was Chase and he had rather long hair and tattoos. But there was something about him.....an attraction they both felt.Chase invited her to attend his concert the next night at the Wynn in Vegas and she agreed. He brought her the tickets and it was then that she realized Chase was Chase Taylor a country super star. This developed into a relationship neither was prepared for and Stephanie wasn't sure she had anything to bring to the table. It is here that the saying, 'the course of true love never runs smooth', couldn't be more true. Stephanie has to learn to stop punishing herself and learn to love herself before she could fully love Chase. She gets there but you will shed more than a few tears as you go through her confusion with her. This was another great Danielle Steel book that I am sure you will enjoy as much as I did.

(ALBEIT IN BOOK FORMAT) By Robert Steven Thomas Hard to knock this author's very successful style ... she's kinda like a female counterpart to Dan Brown's predominately "male-adventure focused" writing format. Though this is the first novel I have read by Steel, actually, I found the book to be engaging and it held a good deal of interest for me. I have little doubt many of the ratings (from women) will be 5 Star. From men ... probably not as many. Within the genre of "women's escapism" this book will likely become another instant hit. Good work Ms Steel. I wish you continued success.

By Pat Fordyce This novel by Christina Dodd is overflowing with wonderful characters, exciting details and murder and mayhem. I loved it!The story starts with a murder that I at first questioned it's connection to the story. But, eventually it becomes a very important clue. Virtue Falls is a small town on the Washington coast, usually crowded with tourists. Ms. Dodd introduces some of the landmarks and colorful characters. Elizabeth Banner is a geologist widely known, unfortunately, for her family history. Her father, Charles, a renowned scientist, was convicted of murdering and mutilating her mother Misty, with a pair of scissors while Elizabeth, then age four, was in the house. She was severely traumatized and did not speak for over a year. That episode is locked away somewhere in her mind and she doesn't remember details at all. After twenty-three years, suffering from repeated abuse and beatings in prison, Charles has been released to a care facility in Virtue Falls, suffering from Alzheimer's. Elizabeth is back in Virtue Falls to try and reconnect somehow, if possible, with her Dad and study an area rich with geological finds. She hasn't been back since the murder.Garik Jacobsen, Elizabeth's ex-husband is a FBI agent on disciplinary leave. He is despondent about what happened to put him on leave, trying to understand what he didi wrong with his marriage and close to ending his life in despair. In the middle of an ordinary day, the ground starts rolling, and an earthquake reading an 8 on the Richter Scale rocks this small town. Devastation is everywhere, but Elizabeth rushes without concern for her own safety to the cliff to watch for the inevitable Tsunami. She is able to video it and knows this is a once in a lifetime happening. Virtue Falls is without power, water, or food and the after shocks are tearing down what little is left. Garik races from Las Vegas to be with Elizabeth and they are staying at the Virtue Falls Resort, owned by his foster mom.Beware, once you start this novel, it's difficult to put down! You learn a lot about earthquake/tsunamis, meet a lot of people who might have murderous intentions and enjoy a very sexy second chance romance. It's very hard to put into words the impact of this story. I can only recommend you read and enjoy it.I received this eBook from the publisher and NetGalley for an honest review.Pat Fordyce

13 of 13 people found the following review helpful. I recommend buying THE LISTENER By TheReadingAddict First, let me mention Christina Dodd’s short story introduction to VIRTUE FALLS titled THE LISTENER, where the unique citizens and tourists are welcomed at the Oceanview Café to eat, greet and gossip. I recommend buying THE LISTENER, (for a minimal price), as its subtle amazing story gives a glimpse into the wide variety of personalities, faults, and issues the reader encounters in VIRTUE FALLS.VIRTUE FALLS starts with a story of horror in San Francisco, seemingly unconnected to the town two states away. Christina Dodd then proceeds from the Oceanview Café again, weaving a tapestry of characters in time, location, and personality so the reader has an idea of where everyone is before everything goes BOOM. Literally. I was reminded a bit of Dame Agatha by this.I absolutely loved the steady abundance of crisis this story unfolded. In spite of the length of this book, there were very few moments of ease. Think Peyton Place meets The Poseidon Adventure meets Ted Bundy all in one place. The format of the story, highlighting different characters and scenes instead of linear narration, kept my attention unlike many books I’ve read that bounce from place to place. This a major difference from Christina Dodd’s previous books. Also unusual, the characters were ‘normal’ everyday people with ordinary every day jobs. No rich guys falling for poor independent damsels. No shifters, vampires, or fictionally factual things that go bump in the night. Yet--there were flashes of things beyond earthly understanding.Though the main characters were overly beautiful/tall/handsome, they had issues all of us can identify with. The sex wasn’t other-worldly or kinky, it just reflected the passion between people who couldn’t make it the first time around. There were no supernatural conspiracies threatening the world, as in many of Christina’s books, but real monsters all people on the west coast of the U.S. have in their closets and under their beds--earthquakes and tsunamis. Oh, with a dose or two of murder and mayhem to tie it all together. I must say I was surprised at the lengthy romance part of the story as VIRTUE FALLS was touted as more straight suspense instead of romantic/suspense. Don’t get me wrong, I loved the heat, the chemistry, and the word crafting, but the troubling issues this couple had were overshadowed and too easily surmounted by chemistry to fit in with the tone of the suspense. And since the length of this book allowed far more character development than usual, their issues could have had more emphasis and better balance. The lengthy descriptions gave me time to remember and care about the multitude of people introduced into the story, and are prevalent throughout. And at first I felt they could be tighter and less rambling. But after reading this book for the third time, I realized Christina Dodd was subtly weaving again, making connections without hitting the reader over the head. These long descriptions also made me wonder which of these characters’ stories would be the focus of future adventures in Virtue Falls. Can Christina Dodd continue to keep this amazing amount of action and chaos going, or will future books be disappointingly shorter. Will she keep the balance of reality with a hint of the beyond without the supernatural overwhelming the suspense? And the one thing that has been on my mind since reading THE LISTENER; whatever happened to Cornelia? She wasn’t in her regular place at the Oceanview Café. Will she be included in future VIRTUE FALLS sagas? I’ll be waiting on pins and needles to find out, and to see if the end of this book is the lead into the next. I hope so!

I honestly couldn’t put it down. I just kept telling myself “one more page” over and over. After an Earthquake rocks Virtue Falls, Geologist Elizabeth Banner stumbles upon a mystery that will shake her to her very core. Because Elizabeth Banner always believed her father murdered her mother 22 years ago. But nothing is as it seems. Christina Dodd has a true gift in her ability to make her characters come to life. Every time I read one of her books I get drawn in. I honestly feel like I know these characters and can feel their fears and desires. This book is kept me GLUED to my couch! Every time I thought I had it figured out – I was blindsided! I love that a book can keep your attention from start to finish. Great Job Ms. Dodd! I can’t wait to see what you come up with next!!!

The Pilot's Wife: A Novel, by Anita Shreve

Amazon.com Review Oprah Book Club® Selection, March 1999: With five novels to her credit, including the acclaimed The Weight of Water, Anita Shreve now offers a skillfully crafted exploration of the long reach of tragedy in The Pilot's Wife. News of Jack Lyons's fatal crash sends his wife into shock and emotional numbness: Kathryn wished she could manage a coma. Instead, it seemed that quite the opposite had happened: She felt herself to be inside of a private weather system, one in which she was continuously tossed and buffeted by bits of news and information, sometimes chilled by thoughts of what lay immediately ahead, thawed by the kindness of others ... frequently drenched by memories that seemed to have no regard for circumstance or place, and then subjected to the nearly intolerable heat of reporters, photographers and curious on-lookers. It was a weather system with no logic, she had decided, no pattern, no progression, no form. The situation becomes even more dire when the plane's black box is recovered, pinning responsibility for the crash on Jack. In an attempt to clear his name, Kathryn searches for any and all clues to the hours before the flight. Yet each discovery forces her to realize that she didn't know her husband of 16 years at all. Shreve's complex and highly convincing treatment of Kathryn's dilemma, coupled with intriguing minor characters and an expertly paced plot, makes The Pilot's Wife really take off.

Review ...an oddly gripping popular novel ... Shreve has done a terrific job with an otherwise dull subject: the aching innards of a betrayed spouse. -- Los Angeles Times Sunday Book Review, Susan Salter ReynoldsReading Anita Shreve's novel, The Pilot's Wife, is like unraveling a thread. From the moment Kathryn Lyons answers the late-night knock at her door, she and the reader set upon a course that leads to a surprising revelation - that Kathryn's life is not what she thought it was....

Her search leads her not only to some answers, but to a realization - that the possibility is slim of ever fully knowing those we love, even those we love the most. -- BookPage, Laura Wexler, May 1998

Her beloved husband Jack, a trans-Atlantic pilot, and Kathryn have shared a strong relationship over the years they have been together. Their teenage daughter Mattie is intelligent and loving though a bit too independent as fifteen-year old girls seem to be, at least with their moms. However, her happy family lifestyle explodes into pieces when Jack's plane blows up while in the air ten miles from Ireland.Already struggling with grief, Kathryn is stunned by the incessant questions about Jack, their marriage, and even Mattie's personal life. Rumors abound that Jack lived a secret life. Soon the media accuses Jack of pilot error and the flight investigators believe he committed suicide. After finding some inexplicable notes in their home, Kathryn is unable to sit idle as her past and her spouse seem to have their history rewritten so she begins her own inquiries. As she searches into Jack's past with the help of union official Robert Hart, Kathryn wonders exactly who her husband truly was?THE PILOT'S WIFE is an SST-paced story line that takes the reader along for an intriguing ride. Kathryn is an interesting character struggling with what she learns about the husband she never knew. Robert adds little to the plot beyond informing the widow of the tragedy. He adds an unnecessary betrayal and romantic subplot that takes the audience on a inclement weather detour. However, when Ann Shreve's novel stays with Kathryn's revelations about Jack, the story becomes a great thriller worth reading.

Anita takes you on a journey through a woman's self-discovery as she struggles with her husband's death and the reality that she didn't know him like she thought she did. It is a portrayal of a strong woman who sets out to learn who her husband really was ~~ while at the same time working to protect her daughter and helping her through this trying time as well as exploring her self-realization.It is a quick read as well as an engrossing one. Though the book doesn't stir up lots of debates like Oprah's other selections, the topic of adultery still hits too close to home. However, it is interesting to see how Kathryn deals with it during her grieving process and comes to the realization that none of us really know another person. This book may sound depressing, but it really isn't. You have to read between the lines to see that there is a gift of hope that Anita was trying to share with her readers as you grow along with Kathryn on her journey.

I usually read at night, yet I found it hard to read this particular book right before going to sleep. The book seemed slow going at first, but in the end, your patience will be awarded. I will admit that the story line was somewhat disturbing, yet in a good way. Can you ever really know you know someone? So many times, it seems that couples enter into relationships expecting their passion to one day subside. This idea has been accepted as normal in today's society. Yet, Kathryn, the main character learns that allowing physical, emotional and intellectual intimacy to fade in her marriage was a grave mistake. I am currently engaged and, if anything, I learned from the book the value of honesty, trust, openess and, overall, reality. There are no fairy tale marriages or relationships. However, accepting this fact and living in the light of the truth will free your soul. In the end, Katherine learned about her mistakes, as well as her husband's, and we can all learn through this awesome novel about the realities of love and loss.

By Noah Hutchison I have read multiple parenting books and extensive literature on training kids and this book exceeds them all. If you buy one book this year, make it this one! You will not regret it and it will give you principles to help your walk with God especially as a parent, but as a follower of Christ as well.

Every single page I was writing notes on what I needed to adopt in my own parenting. This is a MUST for current or future parents!

Great book from parents who did things right By Amazon Customer There are a million parenting books out there, and many Christian parenting books, but this is my new favorite. I love that it's both biblical and practical. It seems like there are often books that are biblical but lack the practical advice that I need. There are also plenty of books that give parenting advice without a biblical foundation. My husband and I have already made some changes to how we're parenting our kids. Because of those changes and also because my perspective as a mom has changed, I feel that I'm connecting better with my kids and having more success at encouraging them to make wise decisions. The best thing about this book is simply that the authors love Jesus and love their kids. This isn't a "do as I say, not as I do" book, it's a "here's what we did and why book". I like books written by people who were successful at things and share what they did. Theories are great, but as the saying goes, the proof's in the pudding.

Blue-Eyed Devil: A Novel (The Travis Family), by Lisa Kleypas

From Publishers Weekly Scenes of domestic abuse and the journey to recovery make Kleypas's modern romance anything but fluff. A Wellesley grad and daughter of a Houston energy baron, Haven Travis is an unlikely romantic heroine until her brief but ardent encounter with a man who turns out to be Hardy Cates, the East Texas roughneck from Sugar Daddy who worked his way up from poverty and then outmaneuvered the Travis clan in a business deal. Haven's engaged to Nick Tanner—a man her dad thinks is unfit for her—and though she and Hardy have a charged interaction, she elopes with Nick, and her father cuts her off. Nick turns out to be a bad guy, and a beaten and bruised Haven returns to Houston, where Hardy's still at odds with her family. Their passion proves as fervent as ever, but demons from Haven's recent past—as well as strife with her family and troubles at work and in bed—stand in the way. Kleypas isn't a literary stylist, but she delivers a page-turning, formula-breaking romance that takes on social issues and escalates passion to new heights. (Mar.) 69 of 75 people found the following review helpful. Kleypas does it again! By Sarah W Frankly, this review is a tad biased because I am an avid fan of Lisa Kleypas's writing. She can almost do no wrong in her books for me. Fortunately, Blue-Eyed Devil proves to be almost spot-on from start to finish.Haven Travis has grown up within the lap of luxury in her wealthy Texas home. She has tried hard to make a life for herself outside of that ritzy existence, trying to prove herself as a woman and an individual. She has fallen in love with Nick, a man her father, Churchill, does not approve in the least. But love is often blind, and in this case, love is hiding a very dangerous heart.Against her family's wishes, Haven marries Nick. That is when the horror truly begins. Nick lacks no compunction in bending Haven to his will. Early chapters in Blue-Eyed Devil focus on that abuse: verbal, emotional, and yes, some very hard to read scenes of physical abuse. Kleypas brings you into this situation, showing you the terror Haven faces as she tries not to set Nick off. Haven has courage and she makes it out. She is now determined to forge a new future for herself, and that is where, unknowingly, love knocks again. This time, in the form of the wealthy Hardy Cates.Hardy may be the devil to the Travis family, but to Haven, he is everything wonderful, and dangerous, in a man. She fights her attraction to him and in the process learns many new things about herself, and about love's difficult path. The danger is not over yet for Haven; she has many painful demons to battle before her happily-ever-after can start.Despite its title, Blue-Eyed Devil is truly the triumphant story of Haven. She is a wonderful character. She is forced to face several hard realities but she does it with determination, with strength, and with resolve. Her journey is not an easy one by any means. I think Kleypas truly created a character to admire in this book. Haven may have grown up in wealth, but wealth could not protect her from everything. It is only love, family, and her own resiliency that help her keep moving forward.Hardy is sexy, he is a charmer, and a bit of a rogue. Just the man Haven needed but not to feel complete, not to feel like a woman again. She needed Hardy for his friendship, for the desire he rekindled in her, and for the sense of peace she finds with him. Their relationship is on the one hand pure struggle as there are a lot of obstacles to overcome. It just makes their ending that much sweeter, but also realistic. Don't be fooled, Kleypas does not gloss over Haven's emotional wellbeing. This is a character who is a fighter and she comes out on top.Blue-Eyed Devil impressed me from page one to the very end. Yes, I am a Lisa Kleypas admirer, I readily admit that. Her writing always touches a chord with me. But don't take my word on it. Give Haven and Hardy a chance. Female empowerment and the importance of love are themes Kleypas explores with depth, humility, and passion.

Hinton Haven Travis grew up in the shadow of her family's wealth and notoriety as old Texas money. Determined to prove that she wasn't the bourgeois beauty queen that people expected her to be, Haven attended Wellesley and fell in love with a boy named Nick from the wrong side of the tracks. When her father told her he would disown her if she chose to marry Nick, she was fine with it. Their love would keep them together. Haven and Nick elope to the Florida Keys and then begin their marriage, only it's nowhere near as idealistic as Haven had imagined. Before she realizes, Nick is berating her father for disowning her, Haven for her appearance and inability to iron his shirts properly, and when his verbal and emotional abuse turn physical, she knows she has to do something to get away--before she's stuck forever...Hardy Cates is a Texas roughneck who has clawed his way to the top of the oil industry. A self-made millionaire, Hardy is no friend of the Travis family after swindling Haven's brother Gage Travis in a business deal. But when his old friend Liberty decides to marry Gage, Hardy can't pass up the opportunity to crash her wedding. When he sees Haven, he finds himself enthralled by her beauty, inflamed by her passionate nature, and desperate to find out more. When Haven elopes, two long years pass before Hardy runs into her again. But when he does, he realizes all the old emotion is still there, and the flames have been fanned over the years. Hardy is determined that he'll have Haven Travis, whether she likes it or not.Blue-Eyed Devil is the sequel to Kleypas's first contemporary novel, Sugar Daddy. I loved that book. Loved it. Stayed up all night and was nearly late to work the next day I loved it so much. So I was skeptical about a sequel, because at the end of Sugar Daddy Hardy Cates had left a bad taste in my mouth. I needn't have worried. There are few authors who can pull emotion out of me like Lisa Kleypas.First of all, the character of Haven Travis a well-drawn, well thought out, carefully executed heroine. It would be easy to dislike someone who was born with a silver spoon in her mouth and determined to reject it. And having an abusive husband when you know she has the resources to get herself out of it could have made Haven come off as someone who enjoyed being a victim. But that's not how it was. My heart bled for the abuse that Haven endured and I cried when she finally worked up the nerve to leave Nick. I was broken for her and could completely understand how she wouldn't be ready for another relationship anytime soon--nor should she be.Then enter Hardy Cates, a man who I knew had it in him to be a white knight, but who hadn't displayed those characteristics at the end of Sugar Daddy. And from the way he took care of her, from the very beginning, the way he tried so hard to put the broken pieces of Haven Travis back together again, I fell in love. I don't even know why I doubted it. Lisa Kleypas has rarely done me wrong, and after finishing this books I can't even remember which ones I didn't like.Blue-Eyed Devil is romantic, engaging, and dazzlingly well written. I've said it before and I'll say again that if all of Kleypas's contemporaries are going to be this stunningly emotional and well told then I can't fault her for going this route. Before enjoying Blue-Eyed Devil, I'd recommend reading Sugar Daddy, but just know that each is also fantastic on its own. And while you're waiting for her next contemporary, a couple of my favorite Kleypas historicals are Someone to Watch Over Me (Bow Street, Book 1) and Suddenly You.

Kleypas Soars With Another Sexy Texas Saga By Carol Storm There's nothing steamier in romance than a privileged miss with a cool and cultivated exterior who's got a secret craving for rugged men from the wrong side of the tracks.Haven Travis is a different kind of romance heroine. As a modern feminist, and a graduate of the prestigious Wellesley College (author Lisa kleypas' real alma mater) she's at first reluctant to admit how attracted she is to rugged and blue-eyed Hardy Cates. But after a bad marriage and some intensive therapy cause her to rethink her priorities, she takes the incredibly brave decision to give love a try with a man who is definitely not of her background.Of course, it helps that Hardy Cates is a man on the rise -- worth millions, shrewd and aggressive, he takes on Houston's old guard with the same self-confidence that he uses to make Haven shed her prim, cool facade and to gradually loosen up all of her inhibitions in bed! This exciting contemporary romance is sexy, touching, and even funny in places. There were only a couple of minor thematic issues I would have liked to see clarified or handled differently.Haven's "feminism" is never really developed in a way to engage the reader. She says she was the type of little girl who always wanted tool kits and not dolls, but as an adult she never shows the slightest sign of savvy or guts or know-how in any technical field. When she gets stuck in an elevator, all she can seem to do is grab her cell phone and scream for Hardy to come and rescue her! As Shakespeare once said so eloquently, feminism should be made of sterner stuff. Haven always reacts to danger by looking for a big strong man to turn to. This would be fine in a Victorian historical, and Kleypas has written some very good ones. But it is not a feminist attitude. Lisa Kleypas seems to want her heroine to be called a feminist without having to do any of the nasty, dirty stuff feminists have to do, like stand up for themselves or do gunky boy stuff with tools.Hardy Cates is also not fleshed out as much as he could have been. Lisa Kleypas is so in love with the idea of powerful, "ruthless" men, but she tends to be very squeamish about describing the business world honestly. There are no Willy Lomans, no decent men who believe in the system only to be shattered by the rise of the rich and ruthless. Only Horatio Alger stories of hard-driving heroes who beat the system without having to hurt anyone in the process. If Hardy is really "ruthless," what rules does he break? Is there blood on his hands, or only oil? How exactly does a welder with no education at all rise to become a multi-millionaire while still having time for a sexy social life and lots of four hour workouts at the gym?Lisa Kleypas is a brilliant writer at the crossroads of her career. Part of her wants to be taken seriously as a writer, which is why she's getting her feet wet in weighty topics like feminism and domestic abuse. But part of her still wants the easy fantasy of hitting the jackpot, marrying the rich guy with the big muscles, and living happily ever after. There are conflicts here that could make for great literature, but they need to be explored more honestly than they are in BLUE EYED DEVIL.

The Thrilling Finale to the Action of Purpose Trilogy.

A savage evil collides with a desperate faith in a battle for the fate of all that remains.

Sinking deeper day by day into a mire of personal loss, self-loathing, and despair, former police officer Kane Lorusso is at a crossroads. After all the evil he has endured at the hands of the psychotic warlord, Malak, and his army of bandits, Kane struggles to physically and emotionally survive his own worst nightmare. While the forces of darkness continue to rise against Kane and his allies, their only hope lies in a faith that refuses to die, and a God who has spared them all for a singular purpose.

As new allies join the fight and old enemies reemerge from the wasteland, Malak’s savage bandit army gathers in the West, preparing to unleash an unspeakable evil upon the whole of creation. Destinies intertwine in a timeless conflict as Kane and his friends come to the sobering realization that they are the last hope of a dying world. Will they lay down and be consumed as every last ember of hope is stamped out? Or will they stand one last time against the fading of the light?

About the Author "The narrative features strong, evocative Christian overlays, which Jones handles with considerable dramatic skill and a no-nonsense delivery. Jones adeptly interweaves this earthly brawl with a larger celestial struggle being fought over the future of humanity. Kane’s quest to save his children, Dagen’s search for the best parts of his soul, the survivors’ hunt for an ancient artifact of enormous power—all are brought to a stirring, well-handled climax. An energetic thriller about beleaguered warriors of God battling the powers of darkness that delivers a rousing conclusion." ~ Kirkus Indie Review

Ultimate battle of faith By Jason Brown From the very start, I knew things would be different, just not fundamentally, thank goodness. At the end of book 2, Tynuk was with the Comanches while the rest of the group barely survived a Satanic onslaught of their base. Just like the start of book 2, this connects to the previous book's end,but it also starts with an intriguing prologue, one that connected to the final battle very well. I don't recall reading a book with intertwining plotlines and subplots that felt so organic as this one. From Tynuk's trials that the war chief could foretell the incredible ending, to Malak and his degenerate army going to find the one item to turn things to their favor, to Israeli soldier Ari and her quest for vengeance, to the harrowing survival of Kane and his group, this was an incredible thrill ride from first to last page. In the final battle, the descriptive style was akin to Mark Olsen in his Watchers duology, that's high praise from me since it's incredibly rare I find anything in Christian fiction that is both complex in style yet easy on my mind to imagine. It played out like how I hoped Stephen King's The Stand would end then got better in the middle. Imagining that powerful gunfire, Tynuk's arrow shooting, Courtland sick sword fighting, even the train fight scene beat my mind into submission with the smallest detail of that big fight. And then, after the ultimate battle with all its destruction and story twists came a beautiful two-part epilog that gave the trilogy very good closure. Highly recommended for any fan of action-packed apocalyptic fiction that's light on preaching and heavy on style and entertainment.Disclaimer: I did receive this book from the author for an honest review. I honestly loved!

Just like The Substitute, this book was a fast paced read full of characters you fall in love with (Garrett and Blair), some you want to push off a cliff (Neil), those you already love (Megan, Josh and Libby) and the ever spunky grandmother (Nana Ruby). Even Knickers and Gram make an appearance!I am so happy that Blair got her own book! She’s tough, ambitious and driven, but in a relationship of convenience lacking sparks and most of all love. Her wedding to Neil (aka the evil weasel) looms upon her and you can see she just doesn't have her heart in it. Enter ex-boyfriend Garrett in a “chance” meeting in Phoenix and her world suddenly gets turned upside-down. I desperately wanted Blair to give Garrett a second chance, but completely understood her reluctance. He broke her heart at a time when she needed him most.I fell in love with Garrett instantly. Talk about being humble, knowing you screwed up in a big way yet determined enough to go get the only woman he ever loved. After five years of replaying his mistakes, Garrett’s only concern now was Blair and her happiness. Plain and simple. Talk about the perfect guy!I definitely recommend The Player to anyone who likes a fun, fast read with a HEA. It left me with a “book hangover”. Now I can’t wait for Libby’s book, The Gambler!**I received this book as an ARC in exchange for an honest review.**

I will pretty much read whatever she writes, so of course it shouldn't be a surprise that I dived into this new story the first chance I got. In True Denise Grover Swank fashion, the story catches you from the first word and it doesn't leave you until the last sentence. The book is filled with romance, heartbreak, laughter and some pretty interesting characters. Both ones you will fall in love with and of course those you will hate. From the moment I finished The Substitute, I couldn't wait to read Blair's story. Considering how pragmatic and distrustful she was of Josh in the first book, I knew that for her to find her true love it will take an extraordinary man and special circumstances. I have to say that I really enjoyed getting to know Blair better. The heartbreak she lived through and being disappointed more than once in her life formed her to be the cutthroat divorce lawyer she is. Blair is independent and strong and of course she needs a strong man beside her. Unfortunately, that's not the man she is going to marry. If I have to be honest, Neil kind of gave me the creeps most of the time. And with good reason.Garret on the other hand, is a completely different thing. He is quite the man candy and he is also Blair's other half in every way. And the fact that they have history together doesn't hurt :) Their interactions through the story are sometimes fun, sometimes heartbreaking, frustrating or even down right fun. I loved that Garret was ready to give up everything for his one true love. And with a lot of help from Nana Ruby and their friends Garret and Blair find they HEA :)I quite enjoyed also reconnecting with the characters from the first book :) It was quite fun to see what happened after the wedding with Meghan and Josh and their crazy family :)In a few words, this is definitely an interesting and fun read :) It has a little bit of everything: romance, deception, heartbreak, fun and of course some hot scenes that will definitely increase the temperature :) The characters are quite interesting and will make you connect with them and feel what they feel. Or said in short, another page turner by the great Denise Grover Swank. Now the only thing left is to wait impatiently for the last story in The Wedding Pact Series. And I am sure it will be another captivating story :)This review was originally posted at Living In Our Own Story Book Blog. I received an ARC of the book in exchange of an honest review

I loved how the main female character went with her gut instead of whining and having self doubt the whole time. This book was the opposite. While I enjoyed it, it was mildly annoying the entire way through as it was constant drama and self doubt and nothing positive til the very end or almost the end. I'm hoping the 3rd book in the series does better.

"The Bone Orchard [is] both a rich exploration of character and a satisfying mystery." ―Bruce DeSilva, Associated Press"Excellent . . . Thoughtful plotting and strong characters raise this above the crime novel pack." ―Publishers weeklyIn the aftermath of a family tragedy, Mike Bowditch has left the Maine Warden Service and is working as a fishing guide in the North Woods. But when his mentor Sgt. Kathy Frost is forced to kill a troubled war veteran in an apparent case of "suicide by cop," he begins having second thoughts about his decision.

Now Kathy finds herself the target of a government inquiry and outrage from the dead soldier's platoon mates. Soon she finds herself in the sights of a sniper, as well. When the sergeant is shot outside her farmhouse, Mike joins the hunt to find the mysterious man responsible. To do so, the ex-warden must plunge into his friend's secret past―even as a beautiful woman from Mike's own past returns, throwing into jeopardy his tentative romance with wildlife biologist Stacey Stevens.

As Kathy Frost lies on the brink of death and a dangerous shooter stalks the blueberry barrens of central Maine, Bowditch is forced to confront the choices he has made and determine, once and for all, the kind of man he truly is, in The Bone Orchard by Paul Doiron.

Review

“Massacre Pond is a tough act to follow, but Doiron avoids series stagnancy by placing Bowditch outside of the law-enforcement circle he once loved and treating readers to another round of top-notch outdoors-Maine descrition. Highly recommended for fans of C.J. Box and Craig Johnson.” ―Booklist

“Excellent . . . Thoughtful plotting and strong characters raise this above the crime novel pack.” ―Publishers weekly (starred review)

“Vivid local characters and wild Maine landscapes, as well as a satisfying mystery. Recommended for readers who appreciate maverick backwoods investigators like Steve Hamilton's Alex McKnight.” ―Library Journal

“Bad Little Falls is a jewel of a book. Doiron has gotten it all magnificently right: a hell of a good mystery, beautifully drawn landscape and characters so evocatively written they follow you off the page. Buy this. The guy can write.” ―Nevada Barr, New York Times bestselling author of Rope

“A high-stakes, high-tension yarn in which you keep wishing everything would turn out fine for the deeply flawed, deeply sympathetic hero.” ―Kirkus

“Excellent . . . a murder case with some truly wicked twists. Dorion matches strong characters with effective prose and subtle characterizations. Fans of Steve Hamilton's Alex McKnight series, likewise set in a remote region close to Canada, will find a lot to like.” ―Publishers Weekly (starred review)

Paul Doiron brings Maine to life in this series. When an author can transport a reader to a local through his words, you know he is a writer worth his salt.Mike Bowditch is a rebel, a non-conformist, but a man of integrity. The kind of man you would want as a friend. Kathy Frost is lucky to have such a friend. She is very rightly annoyed with him for leaving the warden service. Because Mike is a natural. He has the deductive reasoning skills combined with a knowledge of the outdoors that makes him perfect for a warden's job. But Mike has been disillusioned and he is spending his days as a fishing guide. Until he talks to his friend...then tragedy strikes. Is a suicidal ex-soldier's death to blame or is it something else?Mike Bowditch may no longer be a Maine Game Warden but he can never stop investigating...he can never stop being a warden. Bowditch is relentless in his search for the truth and his hunt for the shooter who shot his mentor Kathy Frost. As with each book in the series, Mike Bowditch grows up more before his eyes. As always there is plenty of action and twists and I loved the ending!Fabulous addition to a wonderful series. Highly recommend.

With each installment, Paul Doiron's writing gets richer and more nuanced along with his characters. In this one, the focus is Kathy Frost, Mike's former sergeant and one of my favorite characters in the series. I intended to save this for vacation, but when I bought the book last night I ended up reading until 1 a.m. and then finishing it this morning. The mystery is excellent, but what I especially loved was the character development. Mike is becoming a man. Lots of characters from earlier books make gratifying reappearances here. If you're new to Doiron, start with THE POACHER'S SON and read the books in order for a wonderful reading experience. FIVE BIG STARS.

I am a selfish reader, I know this about myself. When I love a character and or a series, I hate having to wait between publication dates. This is one of those series. The main character in the series, Mike Bowditch, has grown in each book, and this is part of what makes him so interesting. He is also a great investigator, the author surrounds him with great secondary characters, and the mysteries that he is trying to solve, are always engaging.Since Mike is a Game Warden, the author uses the Maine landscape as another character. This is a job and a part of the world so removed from mine, that I find myself totally involved. If you have not read the other books in the series, I think Mr. Doiron makes it easy for a new reader to enjoy the book, but I would suggest reading all the books. It is worth it. If you are already a fan of this series, this one is a great addition.

Mari Nosal demonstrates her knowledge as a parent and education professional by sharing ways that others can effectively support and interact with individuals with autism and their families. Mari wrote this book with the intent of providing an informative venue for parents, educators, and kids with autism. Mari's perception is that all of the latter individuals mentioned are involved in bringing up a child on the autism spectrum. Thus her Ten Commandments series is separated into three parts to address all individuals who are part of the child's support team. This book was developed to be informative in a design that can afford busy parents, educators, and society at large to access the information they need in a timely fashion. Mari has added other special needs related personal poetry, and musings in this book to further inspire others to know they do not walk in the dark. , possessing the collaborative stance that I do: I have decided to provide a voice for parents & children on the autism spectrum in my book. This book is the product of a dream. A dream that I can make a small dent in the development of a more diversified world through providing parents and children with a voice and presence in my book for others to identify and learn from. In this book, reader will find quotes and photos from families who live with autism from several different countries and varied diagnosis on the spectrum. My intent in presenting families from different nations is to hopefully emphasize the fact that autism is prevalent all over the world and not just in ones back yard. I hope this addition will also exemplify the fact that autism knows no borders, race, creed, gender or income boundaries. The challenges with autism that families face is the same all over the world, the parents, children and society struggle in a similar fashion with the same issues and emotions. Just imagine what the world would be like if collaboration and unity could occur internationally. By reading about actual families who generously shared personal quotes and photos in this publication, professionals and society at large can hopefully gain a semblance of understanding of what life is like for actual families who live with autism. What better way to learn about families living with autism then by hearing parents and children’s opinions regarding living with autism through their own eyes? My intent is to help those who walk the path I have walked both as a parent and professional and light their path to make their load slightly lighter. Yes, their is ALWAYS a light at the end of the tunnel if you can just muster up the energy to reach it.

Ten Commandments Of Interacting With Kids On The Autism Spectrum By Linda Every parent, family member, educator that is involved in the life of an autistic child should have a copy of Mari Nosal's book "Ten Commandments Of Interacting With Kids On The Autism Spectrum". I felt as though I was reading my own personal journey. Mari is an incredibly talented writer who pens the most honest and realistic insight in the life of an autistic child. Her own personal experience in raising a son with Asperger and being an educator, Mari knows first hand what she is writing about. Her poems at the end of her book are incredibly touching and true. This book is straight forward, to the point and honest. This is the book to give to people who don't understand autism or how to work with an autistic child. Great gift to give to family members who want to help but don't know how. Thank you Mari for writing this amazing book!Linda Mastroianni

It's short, to the point and sums up what it's like to live, teach, and love a person on the spectrum. This is the first book I've read that I will give to family and friends and say "hey read this. It will help you understand our lives." As an ASD Mom of two, I found it supportive and inspirational. You don't get bogged down in the science or theory or it all. It's about real life!

Korins My friend Linda Mastroianni says it best in the foreword to this great book:Mari Nosal’s book “Ten Commandments of Interacting with Kids on the Autism Spectrum and Related Commandments” has been one book that truly resonates deeply with me. Her perspective is very different and people from both sides (parents and educators) can relate to what she has to say. This is a fabulous beginner’s guide for parents that are just starting their journey with autism as well as for educators that want to learn more on how they can help their student with autism.
