A strange, abandoned city of impossible scale lies ready to give up its secrets, but at what cost? Jealously guarded by a half-mad group of planetary prospectors, the labyrinthine necropolis may be a treasure trove of incomparable wealth, or a funeral complex with no exit, as an archaeological team from Earth discovers too late. But these off-planet interlopers soon become the least of the prospectors' worries, as their priceless possession offers up a monstrous surprise of murderous beasts from the darkest abyssal nightmare . . . and the prospectors only hope may lie in the unmarked graves of those they themselves betrayed.

The art looks on par with other modern graphic novel art. Quite nice! However, the story seems a bit lacking. Seems like they need some better scriptwriters or something.SPOILER AHEADThe long and short of it is that explorers / planetary prospectors (looking for minerals or other valuables) set down on a planet where they find ancient alien ruins (not xenomorph ruins, just some other alien civilization). And, "lo and behold" they find a xenomorph infestation as well.Another group sets down on the planet to do the archeological work, and gets killed by the first group via automatic weapons fire. It turns out the first group took refuge in some crystalline canyon that, through mechanism unknown, messed with their minds. One member of the group that got killed off gets back up after being buried (apparently he was a synthetic [an android]). He tries to leave the planet (being, apparently unwelcome) only to be interrupted by a girl over the radio calling for help. Some xenomorph mayhem ensues. In the end, there doesn't really seem to be a resolution. I think the girl he was looking for gets killed by the xenomorphs (so what's the point?). We never learn anything about the ancient alien civilization. The ruins don't really play any "role" in the story. It ends up being "just a location" in which things happen, since we learn nothing about it and nothing specific to the location ever happens (or, if so, it's never made clear). The xenomorphs are drawn a bit differently than regular "Aliens" in that they seem to have spiky mandibles. Perhaps some remnant of the ancient aliens who built the city now in ruins? That's never made clear, either.Honestly, I'd have liked a bit more exposition on the ancient civilization, why the aliens were notably different (it's noted by the synth [a science model] in the story, but never explained), and how/why the first group got mind-controlled by the ruins / crystal canyon / aliens or whatever did it. The story just seems incomplete, somehow. Maybe there will be a sequel that explains everything? But, given the graphic novel ends with the craft heading away from the planet, it's doubtful...Yay for an update to modern graphic novel styles! And yay for a new Aliens comic in general. Boo for an unfinished story...

I read it knowing it is but the first story of a new series of Dark Horse Aliens and Predator-stories coming up. As such, I didn't expect an ending to this story. So I wasn't disappointed, but rather excited that this book is but a part of a (much?) bigger storyline. There is some mystery in it that will be explained in later books and there are hints at some things new to the Alien canon. Also, there was an event in the beginning of the book I did NOT see coming and have only ever seen in a comic in Kirkman's Walking Dead. Too bad I can't write about it.The art is not exceptionally good, but I think that of the art of every Alien comic. And it's certainly not bad, so it doesn't in any way detract from the story. Alien fans cannot go wrong with this book.

The workers soon become enchanted by it and abandon their posts and wander the city, experiencing it's glory. As they soon find out... they are not alone. Something has been waiting for their arrival. And I guess you know how the rest goes....****spoiler alert****Some of the themes in the series as a whole include the ideas of human depravity, impending judgment, mortality, and mystery.Often times human greed and depravity lead to unleashing the Alien as an instrument of destruction upon humanityCorporations and governments want the Alien as a weapon to destroy human lives. But it's not just faceless corporations, for within the story there are treacherous villains often betraying people to their own deaths at the hands of the Alien. In this story there is an added (and I'm not sure if it was intended or not) theological significance in that while the humans were under the spell of the city an android that was trying to save a little girl saved them.Sereda had to be More Than Human and not prone the greed and divisiveness of man in order to think clearly to save them. And to further the Christological significance, Sereda was "killed" and rose from the grave. Also there is an air of mystery surrounding the city and what causes people to go mad. And why are the Aliens different there than the other Aliens. Are they protecting something? I have a feeling well find out soon enoughI could go on and on about it. But it's was a great read. And as I do not normally like horror (ask my wife how I cringe at the sight of it) I've always been drawn to Alien movies. I suppose because of their significance and depth of philosophy, theology, and ethics, I love thinking about what it all means.
