Jacob This book is a must for all parents looking for straight-forward, common sense advice on raising children. There are practable examples to the principles that are taught for both younger children and teens that are really helpful. The principles are sound and don't change and the examples are really helpful. There are also charts that lay things out in addition to the explanations. This makes it easy to refer to the the book and understand concepts quickly. I liked the blend of lovingly parenting but also having authority, a line that sometimes seems grey but is well worked out in this book. You will find yourself working out your own behavior as well while reading this and that was a subtle gift worth so much. I would suggest that this book will change the way you behave in all of your relationships for the positive. A gem of advice on raising children on multiple levels.

Churchill This book has already helped reduced my anxiety as a father and improved my relationships with my children. It seemed I have always swung between being too hard or too easy on my kids, and both had devastating effects. Dr. Allen has presented some things I can do, immediately, to help my kids take responsibility for their actions and accept their role in the overall happiness of our home. It was fun to put some of his tips into practice! I found myself not getting angry in situations where I normally would, and saw my kids' eureka moments when they realized I wasn't going to solve the problems for them. I expect that what I learned in this book will bless our family for a long time to come.

First time through I read quickly to get the overall feel of the book. Second read I pulled out my highlighter and decided to focus on one aspect of my parenting I could work on so as to not get overwhelmed because Dr. Allen gives you so much to think about. After I started seeing some improvement in myself on how I interacted with my children I decided a third reading was in order. I've read many, many parenting books over the years only getting one or two ideas from each. Dr. Allen's book isn't about ideas but concepts. It is about examining ourselves and how we interact in our relationships. For me it isn't just about my relationship with my children but also my spouse, my sister, my mother, friends and even acquaintances.Dr. Allen teaches how to hold your children responsible through creating a nurturing, loving environment in your home that naturally lends itself to an environment of respect and trust that allows you to ask questions of others that holds them responsible for their actions and their future. He highlights that the process isn't about getting immediate results but the successes come in helping your children think more deeply and begin to take responsibility for themselves. I love the real life examples of everyday parents like me facing the same types of issues I am facing. I especially love the do over example because that's what I find myself doing frequently as I evaluate each interaction and how I could have applied what I've learned from Dr. Allen. Highly recommend this book.
