Two necromancers, an army of golems, and a demon lord – it sounds like a recipe for trouble, and for Timmy, it definitely is. To earn his pardon and avoid horrible torture and/or gruesome execution, Timmy has to complete every mission the Council throws his way, most of which seem to involve extremely scary things trying to kill him. At least he’s got help – sort of. His help consists of an apprentice with designs on his castle (and her plans may or may not involve overthrowing him), a bureaucrat whose two greatest skills are fainting in the face of trouble and using people (usually Timmy) as human shields, and an elf with the world’s worst case of pyromania and enough magic to level a mountain. Somehow, Timmy’s got to get this bunch of unconventional heroes to work together. Trouble is coming, and it’s trouble of the kind that only a necromancer like Timmy could possibly find himself in the middle of. An army of killer golems is on the loose, which may give Timmy the excuse he needs to legally unleash wave after wave of killer zombies. Zombie versus golem – it’s every necromancer’s dream. And then there’s the demon lord that’s out to usher in the apocalypse. Sure, demons aren’t exactly his specialty, but there’s nothing that a good magical shovel to the back of the head can’t fix. One way or another, Timmy is going to get his pardon and a tax rebate too – even if it means going up against murderous golems, insane demon lords, or mischievous ninja rodents with a predilection for magical swords and the skills to back up the trash talk.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A very good read By Fritz I haven't been a fan of fantasy (excluding Terry Pratchett) since I was a teenager. This book has gone a long way toward softening my opinions. Well written, stylish, filled with a double shovel load of genuine humour, and characters I was more than happy to spend time with. I hope you will check it out, as well as the first volume. I'm looking forward to a third part of this series.

Two Missions and our favorite team continues to grow By Daniel Fredette Picking up right where the first novel left off, Tim, Katie, Gerald, Avraniel, the Clan of Ninja Rats, and of course lots of zombies continue to earn their pardons from Everton. There was an excellent mix of world building and action. We get to meet 2 actual Council members (though only one in the flesh). Learned more of Tim's backstory (and "friendship" with a new Council member), a lot more about Sam's "race," and tons of stuff about the Rats (from their religion, stories of their past, and even a Prophesy about their future). The personalities of Avraniel and Gerald were fleshed out more, and we also learned a bit more about their past too. The world building didn't just consist of the main cast as we learned quite a bit more about Everton's border lands and a nearby kingdom, and a few places beyond the Everton periphery were touched on too. On the action side we had hordes of Zombies vs Horde of Golems, a new type Rat Clan member, Humongous Fantasy Mecha fight, and Apocalyptic avoidance Finale. Lastly, I think most importantly we gained more insight of how people see Tim the Grand Necromancer. Though, the book is written in fun and less serious tone. I love how the story has many layers to it. Like Avraniel is more than a crazy pryo, but an Elf that has had to deal with harsh life of being hated and hunted. Also, Tim's character is so different and much more than he appears. Which is hinted at by comments from the new Council member and a new member of the group "The Old Man" when he was talking with Katie. When I was read the fire side chat of the Kaite and the Old Man, I thought back about two earlier points regarding Katie and Avraniel. In regards to the first one Tim was proud of Katie for finding her Ninja Rat Minions, but how he never found his. The second point Avraniel thinks about developing her own Minions and how it was something she was missing. To be honest Tim has his minions (if not an adoptive family) even though they probably do not think of themselves as such. In fact, if you pointed it out they would immediately justify their actions for a variety of other reasons. However, the truth is Katie, Avraniel, the Rat Clan, and even Gerald are all following Tim. In fact in many times go out of their way to do things against their natures for Tim's benefit.
1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Book 2 is almost as nice as book 1 By Thumper12 Better word count value than book one. Our favorite characters are back with more ninjas. Fun and pleasing. After the surprise of book one this was more of dropping back into the familiar.I know "action" is expected from these types of books but the battle scenes are not the strength of the author. If we could steal battle scene pages for more elf garden or Titan zombie creation, that seems to be where the authors shines brightest.
