When a shocking family secret is revealed, twenty-something journalist Cat Coombs finds herself falling into a dark spiral. Wild, glamorous nights out in London and raging hangovers the next day become her norm, leading to a terrible mistake one night while visiting family in America, on the island of Nantucket. It's a mistake for which she can't forgive herself. When she returns home, she confronts the unavoidable reality of her life and knows it's time to grow up. But she doesn't know if she'll ever be able to earn the forgiveness of the people she hurt.

As the years pass, Cat grows into her forties, a struggling single mother, coping with a new-found sobriety and determined to finally make amends. Traveling back to her past, to the family she left behind on Nantucket all those years ago, she may be able to earn their forgiveness, but in doing so she may risk losing the very people she loves the most.

Told with Jane Green's keen eye for detailing the emotional landscape of the heart, Summer Secrets is at once a compelling drama and a beautifully rendered portrait of relationships, betrayals, and forgiveness; about accepting the things we cannot change, finding the courage to change the things we can, and being strong enough to weather the storms.

While I haven't loved every book of hers, any time she releases a new book, it's a must read for me. "Summer Secrets" is her newest release and I did enjoy reading it.The book starts with Cat in her kitchen and finding an old bottle of vodka. Cat is a recovering alcoholic that had her marriage ruined by alcohol. The book is quickly switched from 2014 to flashbacks. There's a flashback from 1998 and then one in the 60's with her mother's viewpoint, that reveals a big secret. The books moves back to 1998 to show what happens in the summer of 1998 that changes Cat's live forever. She meets another recovering alcoholic that she marries and then has a daughter with. The story jumps forward to 2014 to resolve the hurt that Cat caused that fateful summer. Cat is moving through her 12 steps and needs to make amends with the people she hurt. She also wants to try and move on from being in love with the man who is her ex-husband. Will she succeed? You'll have to read the book to find out.Jane's recent release been really up and down for me. I loved "Tempting Fate" but didn't love "Saving Grace". Overall, I really liked this book. The story was a little predictable and I could see how it was going to end but I still enjoyed reading the story. Jane's writing always keeps me interested in her books. She has a great way of keeping me interested in the story and I was able to finish this book in just two days. Cat was a great character. She was very flawed but it's nice to read about a character that is not perfect all the time but you still want to root for. The descriptions of Nantucket were fun to read. I've never been there but this book makes me want to book a trip to see Nantucket for myself.I think any fan of Jane Green's will like this book. It's not as great as her early novels but it's still really good. The book does deal with some heavier topics but I do think this will make a great beach read. Highly recommended!

I immediately became enthralled with this book from the first sentence. I would sit down to read just a few pages and before I knew it an hour had gone by and I had read 50+ pages. I love any book that has me reading like that!Cat is our main character and man is she flawed. She behaves horribly (as most addicts do) and yet I still loved her. I rooted for her throughout the book and I wanted her to get better and to get everything she deserved. I had a feeling how the story might end (although there was a twist I didn't see coming) but I was unsure enough by Jane Green's weaving of the story that I was left guessing. In my opinion Jane Green's writing is only getting better! I loved that part of this book was set on Nantucket; which makes this the perfect summer read, whether you are on a beach or lounging in your own back yard.

Another great read from Jane Green By Krisilou I've been reading Jane Green for years now, and while her earlier books really packed an emotional punch, her last couple have felt a bit forced to me. I was thrilled that Summer Secrets reminded me of the reasons why I started reading Green's books in the first place. Cat is a recovering alcoholic who is trying to make amends to those she has hurt. The quest leads Cat to Nantucket, where she must face her past wrongs and the family she never knew. The novel begins with extensive back story chapters that establish the primary conflicts. While these chapters provide a lot of information, I feel like they take away from Cat's story. However, by the end of the novel, Cat's story is well established and though she is flawed, we root for her. In the beginning, I was afraid that this novel would be too similar to Jennifer Weiner's All Fall Down, but while the theme is generally the same, Cat's story is a bit more nuanced and complex. The Nantucket setting adds a certain levity that I really appreciated. This is a great vacation read.

Mazza James Fenimore Cooper's novel "The Last of the Mohicans" (subtitled "A Narrative of 1757"), is a remarkable book for many reasons. First published in 1826, the book represents an early attempt to create substantial literary art from the material of North American history and geography. Although the book has its flaws, it is for the most part a success. In the novel, the white woodsman Hawk-eye and his Mohican Indian comrade Chingachgook join forces to help the daughters of a white military officer through hostile territory. The story takes place in a colonial American setting marked by conflict between French and English forces -- a conflict that also involves various Indian nations. There are a number of exciting (and often graphically violent) scenes of battle and chase. Hawk-eye, a white man who, to a large degree, rejects European-American values, is a fascinating figure -- indeed, he is one of the most enduring fictional creations in all of United States literature. Through the mouths of Hawk-eye and the various Indian characters, Cooper offers some intriguing criticisms of white culture. As I said, the book is not without flaws. The momentum of the book lags for a brief stretch, and some of Cooper's characters (in particular, his women) at times sound a bit stereotypical. But the overall power and intelligence of Cooper's work is undeniable. Particularly impressive is his re-creation of a multilingual world of complex cultural and personal conflict. Also noteworthy is his evocation of the American landscape. A tale of death and survival, of betrayal and loyalty, and, above all, of the extraordinary bond between a white man and an Indian, "The Last of the Mohicans" is one classic that deserves to be read and reevaluated by each generation.

In their chronological order, with their order of publication in parentheses, they are: The Deerslayer (5), The Last of the Mohicans (2), The Pathfinder (4), The Pioneers (1) and The Prairie (3). So if you want to read them in either chronological or published order, you should read Mohicans second. But each novel is self-contained, so if you want to try just one, to decide if the rest are worth reading, then Mohicans is the one to start with, as it is his most famous work and generally acknowledged to be his best. The hero of these tales, the improbably named Nathaniel Bumppo (or Natty, or Deerslayer, or Hawkeye, or The Long Rifle, or...etc, etc) was the first, and remains the quintessential, all-American fictional hero; brave, noble, honest and more at home in the wilderness than the town. He is not however, the strong, silent type. He has a habit of launching into long, rambling streams of homespun philosophy at the drop of a coonskin cap. Never mind that lead shot is flying thick and fast around his ears, he will lean on his rifle and expound on the different natures of Indians and whites, or the evils of literacy. The plot of Mohicans is action-packed, but is linear - no surprise twists, and no sub-plots - and contains some highly improbable elements. Well, would you be fooled by an enemy disguised as a beaver? Michael Mann's excellent 1992 screen version reworked the plot extensively, to its advantage.Cooper was the first distinctively American novelist and was inspired by Walter Scott, the inventor of the historical novel. He was consciously attempting to emulate Scott but, although he writes quite well, he lacks Scott's lyricism. And his characters, specially the women, are resiliently two-dimensional. But he did capture the spirit of the frontier, the pride and pain of a new and growing country, and in doing so created myths out of America's past that have survived, evolved, and have sustained the nation, ever since.

93 of 101 people found the following review helpful. a piece of history By Kayo Smada I thought that this was an excellent study of the European-Indian relationships and intertribal relationships among the Americam Indians. There are some gruesome scenes; I feel it is probably a fairly accurate account of practices at that time amongst those tribes. At times the narrative gets wordy because of the details of the history and traditions. I can't believe this book was taught in the 5-8 grades in this country 30 years ago. I don't think the majority of 12th graders could read this book with ease.

Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions is an 1884 satirical novella by the English schoolmaster Edwin Abbott Abbott. Writing pseudonymously as "A Square", the book used the fictional two-dimensional world of Flatland to offer pointed observations on the social hierarchy of Victorian culture. However, the novella's more enduring contribution is its examination of dimensions. Several films have been made from the story, including a feature film in 2007 called Flatland. Other efforts have been short or experimental films, including one narrated by Dudley Moore and the short films Flatland: The Movie and Flatland 2: Sphereland starring Martin Sheen and Kristen Bell.

Amazon.com Review Flatland is one of the very few novels about math and philosophy that can appeal to almost any layperson. Published in 1880, this short fantasy takes us to a completely flat world of two physical dimensions where all the inhabitants are geometric shapes, and who think the planar world of length and width that they know is all there is. But one inhabitant discovers the existence of a third physical dimension, enabling him to finally grasp the concept of a fourth dimension. Watching our Flatland narrator, we begin to get an idea of the limitations of our own assumptions about reality, and we start to learn how to think about the confusing problem of higher dimensions. The book is also quite a funny satire on society and class distinctions of Victorian England.

Review This pre-Einstein geometrical fantasy is one of the best things of its kind that has ever been written, for it is more than an ingeniously sustained fantasy: it is a social satire, with wit as sharp as the sub-lutrous end of a Flatland woman; it is aneasy philosophical introduction to the Fourth Dimension; and it is a rebuke to everyone who holds that there is no reality beyond what is perceptible by human senses.>>> (Saturday Review )This pre-Einstein geometrical fantasy is one of the best things of its kind that has ever been written, for it is more than an ingeniously sustained fantasy: it is a social satire, with wit as sharp as the sub-lutrous end of a Flatland woman; it is an easy philosophical introduction to the Fourth Dimension; and it is a rebuke to everyone who holds that there is no reality beyond what is perceptible by human senses. --Saturday Review

From the Inside Flap ""Flatland" has and always will be a fun and fascinating journey, showing us again how the world of mathematics can expand the mind and take the imagination to places where it didn't know it could play."--Danica McKellar, actress and author of the best-selling "Math Doesn't Suck"

113 of 124 people found the following review helpful. Mind bender anyone? By A Customer Although it isn't very long, Flatland does take a long time to read. This isn't because it is boring, or because it is hard to read, but because of the large amount of digestion one need's to fully comprehend (and to fully enjoy) this book. Even this book contains only 82 pages, it is by no means light reading. The book was originally released in 1884 under Abbott's pseudonym A Square. In the story we follow the journey of a square who lives in a land of two dimensions--a flat land. In it class, and ultimately intelligence, is determined by the amount of sides that a shape has. As the amount of sides a shape has decreases, we find that it also is more emotional and apt to cause destruction through their pointed corners. Women are depicted as straight lines, but one has to take into account the time that this book was published. One can also disregard the story as having any relations to anything in our society and enjoy it for what it is, a mind bending social criticism. In this tale we follow the aforementioned square through his everyday life. we learn what it is like to exist in only two dimensions. We learn of how rain falls form the north and disappears to the south and how gravity is a minute force that pulls to the south ever so slightly. We follow him through the government and through social classes, and the discrimination that comes with them. When his son talks of geometric impossibilities such as 23 (cubed) he has a dream of a lesser land than his, a land called line land. IN it there is not two but only one dimension of being. Through discussion with the kind of lineland, we are offered insight into why our hero the square cannot conceive of the third dimension. Later our hero is visited by a great being, a sphere that appears to him seemingly out of nowhere. This confuses the square very much, and even more when the sphere tries to explain how he passed into his dimension from the third. After heated debate, the sphere takes him and shows him the third dimension, turning our hero into an evolved form of him self, a cube. Form his higher vantage point the square is able to see the innards of those who reside in flatland. He receives tutoring from the sphere about this new dimension and all that it entails. He learns of how limited the field of vision is for those living in flatland, both literally and figuratively. With his previous limits of reality stripped and with his eye opened to the truth, the square quickly follows logic and asks to see the insides of the sphere, and wishes to ascend further into greater dimensions, fourth dimensions and fifth and onward and upward. The sphere is appalled by this heresy and send our hero back to the limited realm of flatland. Here he tries to convince others to be enlightened, but cannot find success. He has a second dream involving the dimension of pointland, no dimensions. The being inhabiting this land is of nothing and knows nothing but itself, which is nothing. There fore this being cannot be disappointed by anything, because it cannot conceive of anything other than itself. We can see the religious parallels to Hinduism and Buddhism here. The completely content creature is of nothingness, much like the state that Buddhists try to achieve, and the outward ranking by dimension not sides can be seen in Hinduism in the spiral path towards God that the Hindu believe they travel along passing from one point on the spiral to another with each passing life. In this land of math all of the lands are contained within each other, much like the rings of the spiral. Finally after this dream the square realizes the futility of trying to convince others through speech, and he feels he must do it through demonstration. Folks hear of his heresy and bring him to the court for the climax of the book. Whether or not the plot of the novel itself is very entertaining, the ability to get your head around concepts that can only be experienced through the mind is challenged thoroughly by this novel. It is a must read for anyone who thinks that they are well educated, as it will quickly tell you just where you stand, theologically, philosophically and mathematically.

70 of 76 people found the following review helpful. Unimaginable Dimensions By Jon Linden Flatland is a unique and brilliant treatise on a trifurcated level. It is a sociological statement, a mathematical statement and a religious statement all rolled into an incredibly astute 82 pages. The book centers mostly on the differences between a two dimensional world and a three dimensional world; but comments on society, law, prejudice, religion, and proselytizing. The book especially points out the difficulty in envisioning a greater reality and a greater vision than is commonly observed by any individual in any dimension or society. The author's premise relates to things existing in a "plane geometry" world as opposed to a "Euclidian Geometric" three dimensional figure universe. The book carefully illustrates to one denizen of Flatland how the three dimensional world of space works and/or exists. Upon finally understanding the "Gospel of Three Dimensions" our protagonist goes on to try and apply the same arithmetic logic and geometric analogs to a fourth dimensional universe. Shouldn't there exist a fourth dimensional universe that allows an entity to look down upon the three dimensional universe with as much transparency as one can from three dimensions to two?Alas, things become different in dimensions other than the first, a world of lines, the second, a world of shapes and the third, a world of objects. In the zero dimension, all things are a point. Mathematically we know that any number raised to the "0" power equals 1 and therefore, all things in the zero dimension resolve into one single omnipotent point. This condition would also exist in the fourth dimension; as those of us in the third dimension have no model to compare it to. Envisioning a fourth dimension, even with time as the fourth dimension is truly difficult or impossible for us in the third dimension.Interspersed with this witty and intellectual dialogue are comments on society and its structure. He specifically comments multiple times of the degradation of women in society to the lowest social status. Only men are educated in Flatland. Interestingly, he paints a picture of an authoritarian society in which people are judged by their shapes and angles. This reflecting the Victorian societal values around him at the time of his writing.Flatland is recommended to all those who seek to enlighten their view of the universe and of potential universes. It is especially recommended to those seeking higher knowledge of any type. Flatland is truly a multi-dimensional experience and worth every minute.

88 of 97 people found the following review helpful. Horrible Edition By M. Gajdosik This edition is essentially unreadable and not representative of traditional printings. It's printed directly from the digitized (and free) copy from Google Books and has clearly had NO editing work done. The book is filled with references to figures that were not included, mangled words, and seemingly random breaks and markings in some spots. This would be fine for a free digitized text online, but is entirely unacceptable for a paid-for product, especially a short book that would be similarly priced in a physical store.

I can get caught up in the hustle and bustle surrounding their life quicker than their grandson DaShawn can go through Estelle's macaroni and cheese!Seriously, the Jacksons, who co-write this series, are so good at their craft! There is always, always real issues in their stories; whether it be relationships within families, personal fears and how we let them color our world, racism in all its' facets.....they always challenge me to ask what boundaries God is asking me to enlarge in my own world and in my faith.I will always, always pick up any book Dave and Neta Jackson write.

Dave and Neta Jackson's latest delves further into the dynamics of a diverse community. There are several challenges and prayers get answered, but not always in the way you expect.

But I know that Dave and Neta Jackson are scheming on another series and I can't wait to read it. I feel like I know the characters personally. And such life lessons in these books. I love the diversity of the characters and how the authors develop the unique personalities. Keep on writing!

Charming, But Dark By 'Yomi 'Segun Stephen To be honest I have no idea why I chose Harrow County – Countless Haints for book review, but my instinct was that I haven’t read a decent graphic novel in a while and the cover looked interesting.Reading Harrow County – Countless Haints , you get the feel of a matured story… not something typed-up in haste or written on a single weekend (the authors might prove me wrong, though). I get the feel of a story that had been simmering for a while and fleshed-out with no much hurry or speed. The story is well-rounded, charming and quite good. It is also simple and has depth with a couple of twists I was not expecting. The art is both lovely and scary at the same time – it is unique in its own way – with a bit of an antique feel. The use of colour is mostly biased towards dark colours but that is no surprise considering the genre. Having said that, the artists made great use of shades – the blend between the dark places and bright spots is genius - just take a good look at the cover to see for yourself.Harrow County – Countless Haints is an experience you will treasure as you open the pages. A pleasure to read, for sure. Many thanks to Dark Horse Books for review copy.

Emmy who has always had a connection with the dark woods out by her home, doesn't know how different she really is. She is almost eighteen and the towns folk are worried about what she might become.Emmy is a real different girl and in the end she does turn into something different but not what you might imagine. I am a bit curious as to how this series might go.The art work in this graphic novel was different than any of the others I have read as it looked a lot like watercolor. The GN is billed as horror but I didn't find it scary but some of the graphics were a bit gruesome at times.

This story has a feel of something from an older simpler time when fears of witches and ghouls seemed less ridiculous. The art is lovely and really conveys the mood of the story very well. I'd recommend this to anyone.

An ex con who wears his crime on his sleeve. A woman drowning in an ocean of secrets. Can they find love and hope in each other? Lorelei "Henry" Byrne was born cursed. Being able to spot a lie with perfect accuracy sounds like fun, until you have to live with it. Her whole existence has been hobbled by her hidden talent. She’s estranged from her family, has only one friend, and couldn’t get through a first date if her life depended on it. She throws herself into her work as the new head of the Cane River Creole National Heritage Park, resolving to be content in her solitude… until she meets Gideon, a man with nothing to lose and no reason to lie. After spending most of his adult life in prison, Gideon Becket has built a quiet life around the Cane River archives. He doesn’t believe he deserves happiness after the crimes he’s committed. When Henry arrives in town, everything starts to change, and Gideon wonders if there’s hope for him after all. But just as he takes the first steps toward forgiving himself, his past comes back to haunt him. Does he hold on to his guilt, or does he take a chance on a new life? Letting Henry into his heart will mean confronting his own tragic past, and take a courage he isn't sure he has. Set in the beautiful Cane River region around the city of Natchitoches, Louisiana, this is the second book in the Cane River Romance series. This is an inspirational, Christian romance. There is no sex or swearing, but the book does address issues such as PTSD, family secrets, murder, life in prison, drug use, gangs, and there is a flashback to a child’s death. The characters experience dark, real-life struggles, and ultimately must decide whether to live a life of grace and forgiveness. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I hope you have a hammock ready... By Kate I've read so many romance novels in the last 30 years that quite frankly it's often hard to tell one from another in my recollection. They're like chocolate chip cookies--some are soft and chewy, others are crunchy with nuts, but they're essentially the same thing.Mary Jane Hathaway is an author I knew as a person before I read her books and I almost stayed away from reading them because I didn't want to have to politely say "yum" and nothing else. But Mary Jane Hathaway's books...they're chocolate chip cookies with chunks of caramel added. The same delicious thing you come to romance for, but with a whole new level of richness. This particular book is the second in her Cane River series; the first book, _Pepper In The Gumbo_, is one of my favourite reads of 2014. This book is nearly as awesome as that one. The only reason I give it 4.5 stars instead of 5 is that this has a different style of story that I like a bit less. I'm not as into crime subplots within romance novels generally. This one does work here in the context of the characters but it takes a wee bit of the escapist thrill out of the story. The book is full of delicious buttery poetry, deep thoughtfulness and humour. It's the very best kind of romance and a perfect way to spend a summer afternoon.

This story takes us back to Natchitoches, LA and By The Book book store, but this time we are introduced to two historians; Henry and Gideon. Henry is not pleased with her gift of being able to tell when people are lying and she has refused to get close to anyone but her best friend. Plus she is dealing with deep seated family issues but decides to return to her roots for the purpose of making her mark as a historian. She meets Gideon, who because of his trauma filled past is also living a solitary life that only involves his foster brother. The two meet and begin to work together but there is something that is drawing these two together no matter how hard they try to push each other away. There are tremendous obstacles, the least of which is their past and need for healing, but the little taste of knowing and being known by someone else, and being loved by that person is enough to keep them both jumping all those obstacles. A good, clean, romance that deals with some tough issues.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. So much more than a romance By Sue Reviews I love this author but I must confess to dragging my feet about reading it. Something about a man with a dark past as the hero didn't appeal to me. I'm so glad I decided to give it a try. It's an amazing book. I felt like I grew just by reading it. It made me think about what might drive someone to do something dreadful and how they would feel trying to be back on the straight and narrow with others still passing judgement. I loved the side characters in this story and their encouragement and love. The heroines story in this book also has such depth. It was amazing how she learned to handle her own past with grace and love. It was amazing to watch these two hearts come together and there story was s slow build that ended in a fantastic way. I loved that characters from previous stories were woven into this so you could see how their story progressed. The story is a longer length novel so grab it when you have a few hours to really read it. There's a lot of detail in the story. Happy reading!

Review “All the Single Ladies is vintage Dorothea Benton Frank --a funny, poignant read.” (Liane Moriarty, #1 New York Times Bestselling author of BIG LITTLE LIES and THE HUSBAND'S SECRET)

From the Back Cover

In this fast-paced and evocative novel, beloved New York Times bestselling author Dorothea Benton Frank again takes us deep into the Lowcountry of South Carolina, where three unsuspecting women are brought together by tragedy and mystery

Lisa St. Clair knows a thing or two about weathering storms. A dedicated nurse with a healthy sense of humor, she single-handedly raised her truculent daughter, Marianne, after her ex walked out on them twenty-four years ago, sending them a lottery ticket once a year as support. One day he reappeared and lured their daughter into a dubious but lucrative venture in Colorado. Now mother and daughter aren't speaking.

So when Kathy Harper, Lisa's favorite patient, loses her battle with cancer, Lisa finds herself drawing closer to Carrie and Suzanne, the devoted friends who were always by Kathy's side. As these three women's lives inevitably connect, they share their concerns about men, getting older and the horrors of maintaining financial stability. Suzanne's ninety-nine-year-old grandmother, a former chanteuse, offers unexpected perspectives on the mores of the day. Carrie's greedy ex-stepchildren are a chorus of cackling crows. And Lisa's mother just can't help herself as she henpecks her to distraction.

Somehow their conversations always return to the enigma of Kathy. Who was she? What did her short life mean?

Lisa, Carrie, and Suzanne power walk the beaches of the Isle of Palms with Pickle, Lisa's adorable Westie. Gradually they uncover the truth of Kathy's life and unfurl plans to secure their own futures, as fate steps in to help them discover that being single doesn't have to mean being alone. Dorothea Benton Frank shows us that friendship is as powerful as the turning tide and that love is about more than just finding the right person. You'll fall under the magical spell of the Lowcountry and of all the single ladies who have a whole lot of living to do.

Lacking Lowcountry Charm By Miss Missy After waiting with great anticipating for the release of Dorthea Benton Frank's newest novel...I regret to say this book was a true disappointment! Yes, ladies... I'm in my fifties and hardly found anything to relate to while reading this book. I never once experienced the "Oh I can't put this book down or I can't wait to see what happens to the main character in the next chapter." Previously, Frank's books have been a true beach read for me, while mixing in lowcountry charm that would wisp me away while reading on the beach. This book starts out dark with a death almost from the very beginning of the book and then transitions to a desperate woman on the prowl in search of a meal ticket! I mean really...are there that many women still so desperate in today's society? Unfortunately, I could relate to children being unappreciative, but the pot smoking plot and men barging in demanding material objects at a total strangers house was also a stretch for me. At various times, I found myself thinking...did she really write this book or did someone else pen the novel and she simply allowed her name to be put on the jacket. I ordered the book first and then realized I would be at the beach where she was scheduled to do a book signing. I've always wanted to attend and get an autographed copy. However, that would have been another 50 dollars on top of the original book purchased. Basically, after finishing the novel, I'm glad I didn't waste additional money. My aunt has met Frank and talked with her at a restaurant on Sullivan's Island, so naturally I felt compelled to attend a book signing or luncheon after listening to her rave and rant about the opportunity to meet and talk with her personally. Overall, I can't help but wonder if one of my favorite author's hasn't ran out of material to write about concerning South Carolina. Has she lost touch with reality and women? Essentially, I find it hard to believe that I'm so off base concerning this novel compared to other readers that gave outstanding reviews of the book! Are these readers just continuing to blow hot air or did they really enjoy a bad attempt of a mystery? In the future, her books won't be considered an automatic purchase!

25 of 26 people found the following review helpful. Disappointing. By library lady I was sorely disappointed in this book. The main character is a nurse, thrown together with two friends of a recently deceased patient. These characters were not that well developed; they were not physically described at all, and were painted as stereotypes: one, a man hunting gold digger, and the other one, a bit aloof. And of course, they welcome the main character into their lives way faster than most friendships would progress. Also neatly tied together with a little bow is the fact that three men conveniently come into the lives of these three women almost simultaneously, and solve all their problems.Only one of these relationships struck me as realistic and the other two were developed at lightning speed, complete with marriage. Is life really this perfectly laid out? I don't think so. Another overused expression in this book was "Y'all". It must have been repeated at least 100 times. After awhile, it was simply annoying.

Collins Dorothea Benton Frank returns with laugh out loud entertaining, ALL THE SINGLE LADIES, a sassy, witty, and hilarious Southern Carolina Lowcountry gem. Three amazing middle-aged women are bonded by one woman’s death, for a "must pack" beach bag, summer beach read! If you are a female in the 50+ range, you will relate and devour this one. I am unfortunately in this group. As the book opens, we meet Lisa a nurse, who works in geriatrics and her favorite patient is dying of cancer. Divorced, in her early fifties, with a grown daughter, she barely makes ends meet; however, loves her job and her work. She is having all sorts of drama with her daughter, Marianne living in Colorado and involved in some things she considers rather questionable; currently estranged. Her no good ex-husband is of little help. Later she even loses the house she is living in.Lisa develops a friendship with Carrie and Suzanne, the two devoted friends who were always by Kathy's side. When Kathy dies, the three woman develop a bond while trying to take care of Kathy’s affairs. However, when they begin to clear out her house, they suspect her landlord is stealing furniture and things from her house. As they work together to solve the past of Kathy, they bond in so many ways as each of them have their own issues, divorced, and over 50. From financial, dating, men, illness, clothes, sex, money, kids, and most of all eating Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, and eating LowCountry southern (bad/good)foods, and drinking wine. (had to laugh, as one minute they are worried about food causing cancer and the next minute they are eating sugar).Suzanne’s ninety-nine-year-old grandmother, was a hoot and they move in with her, taking turns taking care of her. I loved all the women living together, like The Golden Girls. She was a total riot, and had lots of wisdom and fun with the ladies. Carrie’s greedy ex-stepchildren were selfish and greedy and of course, Lisa’s mom and dad always stuck their nose into her business. In the process of working on the mystery behind Kathy’s life, the women bond over clothes, food, booze, sex new relationships, and most of all friendship.I listened to the audioook and Robin Miles, as always was excellent! I could listen to her all day. Dorothea Benton Frank and Robin Miles are a match made in heaven. I always pre-order, knowing there is much in store, and this pair never disappoints! Listening, is like talking with girlfriends, over a glass of wine or coffee, with southern sass and great one liners, keeping you entertained for hours. (You want it to continue). Highly Recommend audiobook, in order to get the full southern "bless your heart" experience.ALL THE SINGLE LADIES may be one of my favorites thus far. Being in this same age range, have had similar conversations with friends over some of the same topics--can relate. As divorced single women of this age as we approach social security, it is a scary thought, thinking we will be working until we are 90. Of course, better poor doing what we want, than taking care of an old man! I also loved the part about being carded at the store one day, and then, in a blink of an eye, gravity hits; the clerk is asking you if you want the senior discount? (or worse, not asking, just giving it to you).A must read. Put this one at the top of the summer beach chick-lit reading list! (Great cover). Would make for a great Krispy Kreme Doughnut commercial.

Captain Micah Radcliff comes back after serving his country to learn that he has inherited a title. When Micah goes home he realizes that his life will never be complete without the only woman he has ever loved, but didn't truly feel he deserved, by his side. Rose Lovett has survived many things in her 22 years of life...the dreaded scarlet fever and watching the one man she can not seem to stop loving, walk away from her. Well Micah is back and he has no intention of loosing his chance to win back Rose's heart, but she definitely doesn't make it easy for him. This is a great story with humor, honor, growing up and learning what is truly in his heart, and love. I cant wait to see the rest of Colonel Elliot's men, and Micah's mates from the war find the love of their hearts.

“Prayer can be a difficult topic to write about, since trying to explain it is something like trying to pin down a butterfly. The more you seek to capture it, the more it wants to escape. In the end, what happens in prayer is incommunicable, as it happens privately, between one person and God.”—from the Introduction by James Martin, SJ Prayer is our conversation with God. It is also at the heart of Ignatian spirituality. Understanding the practice and process of prayer, its various forms and expressions, is fundamental for people of faith. In one collection, Praying with America presents and celebrates the diversity of prayer over the past century and offers readers the wisdom and inspiration of leading Catholic thinkers on the practice of prayer.Praying with America provides a curated collection of wide-ranging discussions on the subject, full of practical and inspirational wisdom, by some of the best-known Jesuit writers and other spiritual luminaries, including Thomas Keating, OCSO; Henri J. M. Nouwen; William O’Malley, SJ; Daniel J. Harrington, SJ; William A. Barry, SJ; Evelyn Waugh; and many more from America, which continues to be a leading Catholic weekly, reporting on news and the lives of the faithful around the globe for more than 100 years. James Martin, SJ, who introduces the collection, is a Jesuit priest, editor-at-large at America, and author of numerous books, including My Life with the Saints.

By Roy Hurle This is really a cute and nice story that has something very important to teach to children, which is tolerance and acceptance. It is so cute the way the creeper writes to his diary, which is one's best friend. It also shows how to get satisfaction, one sometimes will have to get out of his comfort zone, and this teaches children already how to be independent, which is very important! Sometimes, we had to do uncomfortable things to reach a goal, as life is tough. Overcoming all the hardships and obstacle is a victory, as the story ends!

I broke out in a cold sweat, collapsed into the nearest chair and dropped my lead weight head between my knees %u2013 my torment is over, my son%u2019s circumcision is complete. That day would pale in comparison to the trials I would soon face as three years later my son Aidan is diagnosed with autism. All parents who are unexpectedly transported to the mysterious planet called Autism will gain a candid, heartfelt, and sometimes humorous view into this extraordinary disorder. The moment readers view the table of contents, they will be struck by the book%u2019s genuine transparency regarding what autism looks like in the home, at school, and in the public eye. Succinct vignettes of our family trip to the neurologist, Aidan%u2019s unconventional therapies, and the funky yet lovable quirks of our son will help reassure others affected by autism that they are not alone. Autism memoirs by celebrities like Jenny McCarthy and Rodney Peete did well. My account will succeed, too, because it has the opposite appeal: I can fully relate to the ordinary guy facing an extraordinary challenge%u2014because that%u2019s who I am. My book, entitled My Boy Has Autism: A Father%u2019s Journey, will provide all readers a transparent view into what autism really looks like in daily life. It has been a therapeutic experience to share a piece of my topsy-turvy life in the pages of this book.

I was referred to this book by a friend of mine, and I am glad I took his advice to check it out. I have a brother who has Autistic twins and I wanted to gain a better understanding of the type of challenges he and his wife face on a daily basis. My plan was to read a couple of chapters a night until I finished the book. Three hours later from opening the book, I found myself staying up until three in the morning to finish reading it cover to cover! It was a fast paced, easy reading book that evoked a wide range of emotions in me as I continued to pace through the pages. The author does a good job of sharing his experience through this book, and has a great sense of humor that carries on even as he touches on some very heart wrenching topics. I feel that his narrative is carried out in a way that the average Joe can relate to even if you do not have an Autistic child. While the odds say that you may not have a child who has autism, chances are someone you know does and it will certainly help you gain a better understanding of the dynamics of being related to or caring for someone who has this particular diagnosis.I found it interesting that the author Kyle was a teacher. I am also a teacher, and after reading this book, I found myself reflecting on new ways I can try to make accommodations for Autistic kids to help them learn the same material, but perhaps by a different method as they may process the information differently than other students.I feel like this is a book that is well written and even though they are his own personal experiences, it includes narratives that many people will find themselves having a connection with. Whether you have a child with autism like the author, know someone with autism, or are simply a parent, teacher, or anyone else that works with or has kids, there will be content that will make you laugh, cry, or gain a new perspective on a topic that most people may not ever fully understand.

Weissman As an aunt of a special needs person (Down Syndrome, which was unknown prior to her birth), I highly recommend family members and friends read this account of raising a child with special needs. Though my niece is now 25 (and doing very well, and adored by me and everyone in the family), and obviously some of the challenges are different, much of the process of getting the best possible care, and the feelings of having a "different' child are the same. I always tried to relate and sympathize with what her parents and siblings were going through, but in reality it isn't possible. Kyle has written an honest, intelligent, and sometimes humorous book on raising Aiden, and how it has affected his family and his relationships with others. I have always had tremendous respect for anyone who takes on the challenge of raising children, much less a child with special needs. Thanks to Kyle sharing his story, I have a much better understanding.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. I highly recommend this book! By Mark Stogner I cannot remember the last time that I read a book cover to cover. I have read countless books over the years, but have always flipped through the boring parts, skipped chapters, and finished without reading the entire book. I literally read every word of this book (after my wife snatched it out of the mail and wouldn't put it down until she was finished!) and was literally taken on a journey through the chapters of the daily life with the Wilkin family. It was not only well written, but it spoke to a father who also only wants the very best for his children and to keep his wife happy. It is surprising to me that this is the authors first book. He has a way of describing every detail and pulling you into a chapter and then wrapping it up before moving on. I highly recommend this book to anyone - not just those who have been affected by autism. It is quite simply, a GOOD BOOK!
