Jack Kamen’s deceptively slick art style provides counterpoint to these gory mid-20th-century tales of murder and mayhem.

Jack Kamen's precise, clean style was perfect subversion for EC Comics tales of seemingly normal men and women who cooly act on the rage, jealousy, and greed just below their glamorous façades. Kamen’s crime capers include “Forty Whacks” (Whatever became of that ax Lizzie Borden used?), “Contract for Death” (A suicidal man agrees to accept $5,000 for his fresh corpse, then changes his mind. But the contract fails to specify that the body has to be his…), “The Neat Job!” (Her “neat freak” husband drove her crazy, so when she chopped him up into little pieces…), “Just Desserts!” (A madman bent on revenge hosts a dinner for his victims … and the final course is a killer!) ― plus 20 more gripping tales of tension as only EC could do them! Like every book in the Fantagraphics EC Artists’ Library, Forty Whacks And Other Stories also features essays and notes by EC experts on these superbly crafted, classic masterpieces. Black & white illustrations throughout

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Makes me like Jack Kamen more By Sym I'm surprised how much I like this book. Jack Kamen always seemed to me to be the weak point in every EC comic I read, and he seemed to be in nearly every issue of every title. But now I think my low estimation may be more related to my dislike of the types of stories they assigned him in the three main horror books (silly medieval spoofs and stuff). I really dug the sci-fi Kamen book in this series too. But these crime stories where good looking couples cheat-on, plot against, and murder each other are great fun and Kamen seems perfect for the tone and content.I was disappointed at first that Jack Kamen got a second book in this series ahead of guys I like better (Craig, Davis, Feldstein) and before Krigstein and Crandall got one volume. But considering how fricken many stories this guy drew, I get why they put this out. These are very fun stories drawn incredibly well. I think this book might make bigger Kamen fans out of lots of EC fan-addicts. Sorry I ever said you were my least favorite, Jolly Jack.
