Jamison “Freedom Revealed” is based on the book of Philemon in the New Testament, and under the able hand of Joyce Knight has become an interesting account of forgiveness and redemption.The book of Philemon is only one page in the New Testament, and it is a letter the Apostle Paul writes to his friend Philemon. The main character is a runaway slave from Colossae, Onesimus, who has escaped and made his way to Rome, and become acquainted, through new friends, with Paul. On his way to Rome, he has met other people who have helped him, one of whom is a lovely girl named Tisha. He becomes very fond of her and her family, and regretfully has to leave them when he continues on to Rome.When Onesimus meets Paul, who is preaching the gospel of Christ, he becomes drawn to Paul’s message and wants to learn more, to become his student. However, he carries the terrible secret of being a runaway slave, and also, that when he left his master, Philemon, he stole some money. He was not only a runaway slave, but a thief, both being serious crimes. Finally, he confesses to Paul and Paul, who knows Philemon, agrees to help Onesimus, whom he sees as a good person who has repented of his sins and is willing to take his punishment.So Paul writes to Philemon on Onesimus’s behalf, telling Philemon that Onesimus has become like a son to him, and asking Philemon to forgive Onesimus for his crime of running away and stealing the money. Paul’s letter is tactful, kind, gentle and persuasive. These events are told in a most interesting way in “Freedom Revealed.”I loved this book. When I first heard about it, I wondered how a book could be written about a slave, who was only mentioned once in the Bible. I didn’t think there was enough in the Bible to go on, which would produce a book. But “Freedom Revealed” has captured the book of “Philemon” from the Bible, and also has fleshed out the story of “Onesimus” to make an interesting story. The ending is very satisfactory, and “Freedom Revealed” is a good read. Loved it !
