Take Phillip Marlowe, Glen Cook's Garrett, and Harry Dresden and set them in a world of superheroes and supervillians and you have Dane Curse. It's really tough to write well and nail the noir genre in an alternate universe setting and many have tried and many have failed. Matt Abraham succeeded beyond my expectations going in, especially considering this was an indie author. The great thing, though, is that not only is the noir genre nailed perfectly, but Abraham also knows how to write super big action scenes, which is necessary if you want to write superheroes well. Every action scene reads like a big movie setpiece with close calls and incredible escapes. The wisecracks are great, the action exciting, the characters believable and the mystery complex and taut as it should be for a noir genre,The last thing I want to give credit to is that, for a book that takes place in a world of superheroes, the actual superheroes themselves, with a few notable exceptions including the main mystery of the book, only appear in brief cameos. The concentration of the story is on the black capes as the title suggests. The only complaint I really have is that I find the cover image for the book to be a real turn-off and discredit to the contents of the book. It's not even good for comic book art and I am afraid some people would pass over what is really an excellent, excellent book because of the amateurish cover.Don't let the cover fool you. This is a professional level book with everything a noir fan and superhero fan could want. I keep scanning waiting for the next adventure of Dane Curse to appear.

Author has a good sense of pacing, story progresses quickly and you get sucked into a world of super-heroes and super-villains. Was halfway through it before I even realized how long I had been reading, yes it is that engrossing. I look forward to more stories of Dane Curse so I can learn more of this alternate world.Tip: If you enjoy Dresden, you'll enjoy this super powered private investigator

A New Noir With a Cheeky Atmosphere (Anyone Can Be a Hero, However Unlikely) By Michael Young History *******CONTAINS VAGUE SPOILERS******My experience into noir doesn't go far. My experience with superhero literature doesn't move at all.But upon picking up Dane Curse, all of that is left at the door. Dropped down straight into Gold Coast City, we're dropped right into the biggest tragedy to hit GCC- the #1 superhero is dead and nobody knows. A flurries of names and terms are shot at us but one thing is clear above all- black capes and white capes. There is trust that we know who's who.And then there's Dane. Sharp tongued and cheeky narration allows us to tag along with Dane as he wades through the underbelly of black cape society and discovers that perhaps the white capes aren't as clean as initially thought. The story is polished with a gambit of interesting characters and factions. Between the Sindicate, Team Supreme, and SPEC, Dane is up against the fight of his life. But it became clear (very subtly) over the course of the book that Dane has a dream team of his own, eyes, ears, and power in unlikely places (a cop, a blogger with the know, a devoted assistant, barflies, the owner of a lounge, former capes, and dare we say, the boss' daughter!) who all assemble to have his back in the battle of his life.Or so it seemed, anyway. The story isn't quick but it's paced with short and quick chapters so that the reader can keep up with Dane's sharp mind while also moving the story along. Unlike some noir/thrillers/mystery, Dane gives us enough information to draw our own conclusions so that we're right there with him. His choices are informed and the power of luck and quick thinking regularly win him out. What starts off as a somewhat predictable culprit turns to a gang of infuriating and complex cast, heroes and antagonists alike. To say "villain", a word that seems so cartoony and one dimensional considering the content and subject matter ironically doesn't seem fair.A noir that replaces Who Censored Roger Rabbit as my favourite and a superhero story that is quickly replacing those of visual media.
