Review A really good read 5 June 2015 By Eric Neilson Format:Kindle Edition After reading the first book a number of times whilst waiting for this second book, I have not been disappointed. The action carries on at a fast pace for the eighteen year old Jonathon Hunter resulting in a downturn in his personal upkeep as he goes off the rails so to speak. He failed to meet a deadline which lost him a number of close friends in the process. This loss affects him but he takes a bit of downtime whilst waiting for his new ship and finally collects little Suzy's promised gift of a kitten from book one. Once back on patrol for the Australian Sector Militia, bigger battles engage him across many sectors of space. With bounty hunters also trying to collect on the reward for him dead, the attempts on his life become more frequent both space side and station side and his personal kill count starts to rise dramatically. His increasing use of the ships new technology AI who's called Jane and his droid bodyguards help keep him one step ahead of the rest. A startling discovery in the final few chapters turns his world upside down and means that I'll definitely have to read book three to see how it all turns out. If anything, I have enjoyed this book ever more than the first one. it's a good read for any lover of science fiction. Can't wait for the next book in the series. Good stuff.I enjoyed your first in this series and have enjoyed this ... By Clyde W. Ingram on June 28, 2015Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase I enjoyed your first in this series and have enjoyed this book as well. The Action is fast and continues. I will surely get the nest in this series as soon as it comes out.
From the Author Book two in the Hunter Legacy series was even more fun to write than the first. No longer needing to explain life in the 27th century so much, the story moves along more smoothly, slowly building pace. The story went a few places which totally surprised me at the time. There is one place where some may consider abandoning the book. I hope you wont. The rewards are there for persistence. I freely admit to doing something I actually hate reading in other people's books, and that things didn't write out the way I originally planned it. But, it works, so I left it. I just have to trust you, the reader, to not judge me too harshly. The characters are telling me what they want to say and do, and I just sit back and let it all flow out.Introducing a kitten to the story was putting the final major intended character in place. You better believe a kitten has combat kills! There is a lot more to come. With the next book in the series, the pace starts to become a roller coaster ride. Stay tuned.

Fresh out of highschool (at least metaphorically) and he's apparently an ace combat pilot, savant ship designer, capable CQB combatant, and so on. Given his grounding in the '80s, it was obvious he's a Marty Stu for the author even before reading the Ellis' self-summary.There's also the issue that the Hero (capitalized in the book, so why not) wins more by his opponents being idiots than through any particular inherent advantage. There's also logical issues, like pirates leaving their starships "unlocked". One would expect a pirate, of all people to expect someone to try and steal their stuff...but no.There's also strong evidence of the "just add more" theory of design...like creating what amounts to a Corvette-sized starfighter by just adding more power, maneuvering, and thrust systems. And dual-weilding "gatling laser pistols". Duel-weilding anything is stretching credulity, and giving a pair of rapid-fire to someone who misses 25-33% of the time (from numbers given in-story) blows suspension of disbelief out of the (metaphorical) water. Then there's all the karma and "healing energy" stuff; I half expect medicine to be based on crystals and homeopathy.

Well, maybe not completely. there were a lot of things that could be improved - the repetitiveness of the plot, dubious and unconvincing attempts at spirituality, paper thin characterisations at times...I could go on. But at the end of the day, it was still an easy read for me, probably because I really like space battles, gadgets, and loot. Fast food litterature, as my dad calls it, has its place. Sometimes all you need is hamburger and fries. It might not be haute cuisine, but it sure hits the spot.
