This is a clean, western romance; a short story of about 17,000 words. It is the first part of a serial that tells of Sarah Collins’ heartbreaking loss of her husband in a tornado, and her struggle to make a worthwhile life for herself and her two sons. It is set in frontier Montana in the 1904 time frame. A tornado touched down on the Collins farm in Battle Ground, Indiana, snatching Bart Collins into the air as he tried to run to the safety of a creek bed. The same storm flattened his house and barn, trapping his wife Sarah, and their three year old twin sons in a root cellar, until they were rescued by a neighbor. Sarah secured a teaching position that paid so little she was forced to live with her parents. After two years with little or no money, Sarah answered a newspaper ad offering a subsidized teaching slot paying more than double her salary. The only catch… it was in Mountain View, Montana. Tal Evans became a widower when his wife died giving birth to twin daughters. Neglected by their father, who was wallowing in self-pity, they were raised by their 60+ year old grandmother. The girls are completely undisciplined, and run wild. They wind up in Sarah’s classroom after their original teacher gave up and quit teaching because of them. Sarah has run-ins with him when she disciplines his children. Sarah’s father has a heart attack and to the dismay of Tal and the townspeople, she returns to Indiana, probably not to return. Read this heartbreaking story of a young widow and her struggle with her path in life. In the book, here are several intentional errors in grammar. It is the way cowboys and rural folks talk.

It states to be continued in Home to Indiana but there's nothing there when I hit the link.. GrrrrI want the rest of the story! I almost gave it one star because it just stops abruptly!UPDATE: I had to go on Amazons website and Part 2 is there! So the link in the book isn't working.

Warm, humorous, and affecting story of real marriage By A Customer This book, detailing a couple's first year of marriage (complete with highs and lows) is the perfect wedding or anniversary gift. Both men and women will enjoy reading and learning from the sometimes-funny, sometimes tender story of a man and woman written by a man and woman. It's a short, active read, and should appeal even to guys who "don't read." (And don't forget the audio book--it's even more entertaining!)

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Couldn't finish the book By Amazon Customer I purchased this book because I thought it was a romantic comedy. The book description called this a humerous novella. I stopped reading at chapter 9, so maybe the humor part picks up after that, but I did not laugh or chuckle once. I found myself continually sighing and going really?I read a lot of books and this was one of the rare books that I just couldn't finish. It just kept dragging on. I kept finding myself saying "If you don't like that about the other person then maybe you did rush into getting married." and "How did you not know that before you got married?" I finally stopped reading the book when I realized I was rooting for them to end things. One last thing... one of the reviews said that this was a great book for men and women. Ladies, do not be fooled. Unless your husband enjoys knitting and reading romance novels he will most likely not enjoy this.

8 of 11 people found the following review helpful. Could not relate By Erin Having just celebrated my one year anniversary with my husband, I thought this would be an entertaining read. This was one of the worst books I have read in a very long time. I was just so disappointed by it. I could not relate at all to the needy, whiny, senseless female character. I couldn't even remember half-way through it what the two of them had a fight about in the first place that caused her to run crying to her parents house. I think this character was supposed to be in her mid to late 20's but the way she dealt with any issues in her relationship made me feel as if I was looking into the life of an emotional teenager. I didn't feel this was an accurate portrayal of a modern marriage at all. The actual writing and flow of the story was fine, I guess I just could not get past the annoying characters. I read it on the subway on my commute to work in about 2 days so at least it went by quickly.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Great steampunk novella! By Rachel Desilets I adore Clockwork Giant, but I like this more. While it is steampunk, instead of being this epic adventure, it is a realistic, refreshing story. The characters and their motivations are simplistic, desires that we experience in real life. It made the characters more believable and more tangible.Solomon, our MC and the brother of Petra from Clockwork Giant, was done insanely well. His core desire is to join the theatre, but also be able to save his youngest sister from the illness she's been battling. Being a struggling artist is something that a lot of us can relate to, especially since his sister's medication costs more than two weeks of work.He develops a small relationship with Miss Appleton, another member of a theatre. Even as a side character, she has layers and layers that make her so credible. It's not heavy romance, and reads like the beginnings of a genuinely real relationship - making it a breath of fresh air. With so many layers, and reading so realistically for a Steampunk novel, I felt like I was in the world with Solomon most of the time.I know a lot of people don't like the "in between" novellas, but this one is a must-read. While you don't need it to understand the main plot, but you should want it because it's so well written.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Sweet, Gentle And Character Driven By Eoghann Irving By setting Le Theatre Mecanique is technically steampunk, but the story itself really isn't. That's because this novella is set in the same world (and I believe features one or more characters from) the authors novel The Clockwork Giant. So don't go in expecting all the over the top elements that steampunk often denotes. What we're looking at here is a small and sweet tale about a young man struggling to look after his family and to follow a dream he has.I'll call the setting Victorianish just to give you a rough idea of how life is for the poorer people in this world. Things are perpetually teetering on the edge of disaster. Work is hard, manual labor. Lots of it.And yet Solomon Wade maintains a remarkably positive attitude towards life even as he takes on more work and more responsibility to help out his family. His part time position as a the theater's custodian gives him hope for the future. Until he has to give that up too.His friendship with Miss Appleton is the sweet element of the tale. A very gentle and courteous romance. And if she is technically the damsel in distress of the tale she is not a doormat or one dimensional. There's no big crisis here, not large scale drama. It's a character based piece that plays it's emotional beats very well making you care about how it is all going to work out.I found it a welcome change of pace from some of the other stuff I've been reading recently and at novella length it knows not to outstay it's welcome. The story is told without dragging it into the realms of false melodrama.I can't label it a must read because it's a novella set in a larger work. But it's certainly a rewarding read.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Delightfully Engaging Story By Paul Richard From the cover, review, and comments I was expecting more Steampunk. While I guess this fits the genre due to the world it is set in, Steampunk is only tangential. There are a few gears and mentions of an automaton orchestra. What this novella really is, is a love of live theater. The story flows naturally and kept me engaged, while exploring why people get involved in theater and how others nurture that interest. That last sentence doesn't make it sound very engaging, but trust me, this is a very well written and enjoyable book.

Sad and Happy Days is the first part of the autobiographical novel Sex, Drugs, Rock and Roach: Cedric's Story. As the title suggests, it's the story of a life buffeted by turbulence and dramatic change, this first part beginning in the drear fifties, spanning the blossoming colour, chaos and sexual liberation of the sixties, and, out of necessity, breaking off in the early seventies. It is a reflection on an individual person's life, and on the period itself and what it was that was that for better or worse was changing. It is a study of the vulnerability of innocence to corruption, with the conviction running throughout of the goodness of nature, and of human nature in particular. The content examines sexual themes from childhood and adulthood, and deals with both masturbation and pornography. The content itself, however, is not pornographic.

You feel as though you're with the author in those places (the northern English fells, Exeter, Italy and Corfu). I was interested in what the author says about the Vietnam war and how young English and American people reacted to that. I understand English and American people better after reading it. I'm Malaysian and we had lots of problems with communists in my country. I didn't understand the hippies. We were sympathetic to the English and the Americans as we suffered under the Japanese in the second world war and were happy when the Japanese were beaten by America. I hadn't really understood how important the Vietnam war was to young English and Americans, or how all the drug taking and the music was part of that. The psychotherapy was very interesting as well. People were really trying to change themselves in those days. I found the memories of childhood sexual experience surprising and quite shocking. It made me realise how vulnerable children are in their immaturity, and how easily they can make wrong decisions that can change their lives. I thought it was a great book and am looking forward to reading the next part.

Elfquest: The Final Quest #2, by Richard Pini, Wendy Pini

About the Author Wendy Pini was born Wendy Fletcher in San Francisco. Growing up on an isolated ranch in Gilroy, California, Wendy's imagination was fueled by all forms of fantasy and mythology. At an early age she began spinning her own tales of elves, monkey-gods, aliens and sorcerers. While her artistic talents were influenced by of turn-of-the-century illustrators, film and TV animation, her storytelling abilities evolved from a love of Shakespeare, Japanese history and legend, modern fantasy and the epic poetry of the Ramayana. In 1977, a deeply personal project called Elfquest was born. As the first continuing fantasy/adventure graphic novel series in America to be co-created, written and illustrated by a woman, Elfquest became a phenomenon in the comics industry. Appealing to comics and sci-fi/fantasy fans alike, it attracted a unique and unprecedented audience, an equal mix of male and female readers. Over three million copies of the collected graphic novel volumes have been sold to date. The author lives in Los Angeles, CA.

I still love the characters and absolutely adore the art but to be excruciatingly honest, the storyline is so similar to previous quests. I won't spoil it for the reader but perhaps Wendy and Richard could use an infusion of fresh ideas. We have many of same problems, near identical foes the main difference is tha tthey've been reworked. You can see where this is going, and that will be exciting. For the ElfQuest fan, definitely get it. It's been such a long time since we've seen our four fingered friends- I just hope that as the saga continues new twists and new problems will arise that can keep this story fresh.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Don't pick this up if you're new to the series By Gwendolyn To 'get' this, you need to have read what has gone before. NEED to. And I mean EVERYTHING. This picks up where the last comics left off over ten years ago, trying to bring together multiple different and unfinished storylines while at the same time starting a new story. The unfinished stories were left unfinished over ten years ago, some over fifteen, and there are a LOT of characters to keep track of. I had to go back and re-read a lot of stuff, and I was still left with the feeling that I was missing a lot of things the new stories took for granted that I should know.It would have been better to start simple and build, slowly pulling in all the different storylines and characters together. Instead, the story suffers from the same problems that plagued the series towards the end: The world was getting too big and too convoluted, with not enough oversight to pull the stories together or keep them consistent. I appreciate the ambition behind trying to tie up *everything* if this is the final story, but I think it's more important that the final story is a good story. A happy ending where everyone is having babies and finding out who their long lost family is is not necessarily a good story. The art is OK. It's nice to see Wendy Pini drawing again, but the art, like the story, while good, is a soulless shadow of what was once spectaular.

I am deeply disappointed in this book. My passion for Elfquest was born in my tween years as I absorbed the original story of the first four graphic novels. I immersed myself in the expansive lore and in the Wolfriders' epic quest for survival and for identity in the treacherous world of Two Moons. But, here in The Final Quest there is nothing but fantasy cliché and meaningless drivel.I'd offer a spoiler alert but there is really no story here, only disjointed vignettes of elves getting into artificially dangerous situations and then using their ever-adapting magical powers to survive or not; it really doesn't matter. I began to worry in the first few pages when there was not one, but two, baby elves being born. A classic 'jump-the-shark' storyline. Of course the babies are never seen nor mentioned again. There is no identity struggle in this story because the elves can now change their shape and even their name at will. We are asked to somehow worry about essentially immortal elves who can travel anywhere on the planet instantly. There is no ambitious final quest.Lastly, these elves are way oversexed. On the very first page a female elf appears to be about to perform oral sex on Treestump's 'meat.' Then there is page after page of perfectly proportioned elves in their lingerie in provocative poses as if this were a Calvin Klein underwear catalog. I am sorry, but it will take more than elven side-boob to keep me interested in this series.

Make a “firm stand” against erectile dysfunction now!

A man is someone who is not willing to say that he is weak or that he is not capable of doing something. After all, it has been etched in the minds of people that a man must be a producer. This is also true when it comes to having children. If a man is unable to have a child by impregnating a woman, he is automatically labeled as a weak person, or is even believed by some as not worthy to become a man. This leads them to blame somebody else for their infertility – specifically, attributing that it is their wife or the woman who is impotent, not them. But even if a man is able to save face in front of other people, he will surely be ridden with guilt as well as feel helpless that it is him – not his wife – who is the reason for the couple not having a child. As long as a man is unable to admit his impotence, he will never be able to get to the bottom of the situation and solve the problem. If you are one of the unfortunate individuals who experience the condition called “erectile dysfunction”, then it’s time to man up and admit that you have a problem! With this book, we will help you to learn more about your problem. Specifically, this book will provide an in-depth discussion about the following points:
  • What is erectile dysfunction? – Do you know what is happening inside your body if you have this condition? In this book, we’ll take a look at the physiology of somebody who has this condition.
  • Causes of erectile dysfunction – You did not become afflicted with this condition just this morning or just the other day. In this book, we’ll provide a checklist so that you will know how you got this condition.
  • Knowing if you have the condition – Are you in doubt as to whether you have erectile dysfunction or not? With the help of our DIY test, you can confirm if you have erectile dysfunction.
  • How to prevent and get rid of erectile dysfunction – Do you have the condition or not? Regardless of your answer, we will provide you with natural methods that you can utilize in order to prevent the onset of the condition (assuming you don’t have it) or alleviate and even get rid of the problem!
  • Getting help from medical experts – Are the natural methods for preventing or curing erectile dysfunction not doing their jobs? Then seek the help of experts! We have listed the common prescription drugs and procedures that you can consider so that the condition will be completely eliminated.

By Fire Dad ^6 The Helot is book one of a series of Christian Fantasy/Adventure books. The main character, Tor, is interesting, he is a miffit, which the author described as something like a cross between an elf and a dwarf, thinking back to Lord of the Rings, this brought an interesting conflict between the races to mind for me. Tor is a likable character that is stronger than he knows and is a good uncommon hero that you can route for and be glad that you did.The world is well describe and easy to follow along, there are some interesting creatures and people that Tor meets throughout the book as well that make it an enjoyable read. There is a fair amount of tension in this book that not only keeps you guessing, but it did a good job of engaging me to the point that I felt invested in the story. It is well written and an enjoyable read. I'm looking forward to reading more books in the series and seeing what adventures Tor will go on next. If your a fan of Fantasy, or if you are looking for something fun and different to read then this is a great book for you, I really enjoyed it and would recommend it.A fun Fantasy novel with a lovable main character you will enjoy going on the journey with him.4 Stars.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. This one gets 5 stars for sure!!!! By anonymous The Helot is Christian fantasy fiction at its best! A page-turner, each story of this 6-part sequel leaves you breathless and wanting more. “Tor,” the protagonist of each story, is a “miffit,” somewhere between a dwarf and an elf, whose outwardly humble, mild-mannered ways belie his inward strength, fortitude and principled character. As each adventure unfolds, and as he experiences strange and exotic creatures, beautiful yet often hostile realms, your senses are supercharged as you journey with him.But The Helot is so much more than just a series of adventure stories. Throughout each, the reader gets a vivid picture of what it means to seek wisdom, faith and direction from the Supreme Source of all that – God, if you will – and how denial of “self” usually means taking the road less traveled where you face formidable foes.Faced with impossible odds, Tor’s faith, courage, and endearing character somehow encourage us to face our own life struggles in similar fashion. “Human” in his fears, you see a very down to earth super-hero in unlikely form.A mix of fantasy and yet Godly tenets throughout, this book entertains, inspires, and touches your heart in unexpected ways. John Edgell is a masterful story-teller with a superb gift of language and creative genius. He places you into his imaginary worlds where all things are possible…….if you just believe! ~anon

The relationships between everybody was amazing!!! I loved Diva and Kendu...as always lol also Killa and Elite! I loved River better with Major even though she's gonna choose Damon ole dogg ass! He did her so wrong by keeping that secret from her the entire 4 years. Overall it's a great read!!! Now hurry with part 2 lol

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Must read By Bnik3 Once again Chrissy has did it again, shawty I beast wit the Pen. I love River I would say my favorite character, I love how she was loyal nd didn't like handout, she did the street thing wit D but got her education. D wasn't a bad guy he was jus a typically dude who couldn't keep it in his pants even though he had a secret he prolly should have shared so wouldn't be blinded sided. Love Trina n River relationship cuz usually chicks don't get along wit other chicks who they smashed before. I love how other characters from other stories made appearance n they all family n know each other somehow. Major came thru n swiped river off her feet n I hope she don't go back to the past. Can't wait for part 2

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. BANGER ALERT By Nicki Ervin Another series by Chrissy that I know I'm going to love. I loved River. Damon just couldn't get it together. There were a lot of things revealed that had me shocked. I didn't care for Damon and Apple's mother. She hated River for no reason. That Mina chick deserves a real good beat down! River definitely had some real people in her corner. They all had her back. Now that ending had my mouth hanging wide open. I can't wait to read more from Chrissy J!

His most famous work during his Eisner-Iger years was Sheena, which he created for Fiction House's Jumbo Comics. Later on, Powell went to work in Will Eisner's personal studio, and co-plotted the first Blackhawk story in Quality's Military Comics, and co-created Spirit of 76 for Harvey's Pocket Comics. When the Spirit Sunday Comic Book section started in 1940, Powell took on the artwork of the Mr Mystic back-up feature, which was written by Eisner. After a while, Powell took on the writing as well, and he continued Mr. Mystic until he joined the Air Force in 1943. He officially changed his name from Stanely Pawlowski to S. Robert Powell in 1943.

Buy the book for the art and stories... not the commentary By Wallace Harrington This is Dark Horse/Kitchen Sink's third Powell collection of Magazine Enterprises stories... that is if you include their volume of Thun'da (with the first issue by Frank Frazetta and the remaining stories by Powell) and the Cave Girl book from 2014. All of these series were rather short; Thun'da ran for 6 issues in total,(plus some stories in Cave Girl), Cave Girl for 5 issues (including a comic called Africa - Thrilling Land of Mystery and some stories in Thun'da) and Jet Powers appeared as a science-fiction/Doc Savage character in only 4 issues and a US pilot in Korea in 4 issues of American Air Forces. So none of these series was that long, and easily compiled in one volume.Let me begin by saying that I am not a fan of books that are made to look like old comics, as this one is. Thun'da was a larger hardback with a dust jacket printed on glossy white paper. It appears, though, that Dark Horse decided to change the format with the Cave Girl collection. The stories here, like that volume, are printed about the same size as a modern comic (so smaller than they were originally printed) on an “off-white” paper to make it resemble the look of a golden age comic. The stories in the first four segments were typical 1950's sci-fi weirdness. I am not a war-comics buff, so that held less interest to me. The reproduction is pretty good, and the colors are all on register (which cannot always be said for the original comics) so you can appreciate the art. Still, aesthetics aside, I’d prefer the reproduction to be larger and on white paper. And while that is true, I enjoyed the stories a lot.As was already mentioned, though, the curious thing to me was that they had Steve Rude write the introduction and James Vance and John Wooley contribute some thoughts as a foreward and afterward. I like Rude's art, and him as a person. But he began his essay by saying that he had never seen the work before he was asked for the forward. So why ask him to write an introduction? Dark Horse did the same thing with the Cave Girl Book having Mark Schultz write the forward, not so much about Cave Girl per se but more about the "Jungle Girl" genre in general. I am thinking having a comics professional write the forward adds some credence or gravitas to the book. I just thought having a fan of Powell's art might help.I don’t know Vance or Wooley. They also wrote for the Cave Girl volume. The intro was the all too common… I discovered this series when my (fill in relative) put me on a (train, plane, automobile) trip and I was allowed to buy some (previously forbidden) comics and I discovered this character. While they did interview Powell's son, there weren't any great new insights and no mention of little details like the SR-1 and SRP-2 painted on Jet’s ship were actually Powell’s initials. None of that. No history; no mention of Powell's beginning with Eisner, his work on Mr Mystic, or Sheena or even that he had worked on Thun'da or Cave Girl or The Avenger or much else he worked on at ME. No real information and it really didn't give any historical reference for the character or series. Perhaps less needed to be written speculating on who wrote the stories and more discussion of the art in the stories which was just plain fun and adventure.Perhaps I am being overly critical of these things as the real focus of a book like this is the stories, not the commentary. But when a book is priced as these are... $50 retail with no dust jacked... and knowing that there are lots of people in comic fandom who know a lot more about Powell's work and history, I would have turned to them for better essays.Regardless, I recommend the book for many reason... discover and enjoy Powell's art and read the stories… even with the character changing from a dashing space hero in the beginning to a Korean War pilot at the end… and then go get the other two. Powell is a forgotten treasure for comics fans.Still, a nice thing to have if you like Powell and want everything in one volume.

Doc Savage for the Atomic Age By Stephen Vincent Kempton While I originally thought Jet Powers was a Flash Gordon or Buck Rogers clone he is actually more of Doc Savage character since he lives in the present day ( the 1950's) rather then in the future. His subtitle is "Man Of Science". He is a scientist, an inventor as well as an explorer and adventurer. He lives in a underground laboratory cavern in the American South West desert Mesa. He has a distinctive white crew cut hair and a chiseled face. He resembled actor Jeff Chandler.Jet Powers appeared in a mere four issues of his own comic which was simply entitled Jet. Each issue had three separate stories. After the end of that book Jet Powers was simply repurposed as an Air Force pilot in the Korean War. This Comic was called The American Air Forces and was published in 1951 to 1953. Jet had a story in six of eight issues published and these war stories are also included. This is companion book to the Cave Girl volume published in 2014. It was published by Dark Horse and put together by their Kitchen Sink Imprint. It is a quality Hard Cover but slightly over priced for only 168 pages. It has excellent introduction and afterwards by John Wooley and James Vance. The other introduction by Steve Rude is rather pointless since he had never even heard of the character before being asked to write an Introduction. The publishers have once more decided to use the tan paper to give it the realistic look of a comic of that era. I would have preferred white paper like a Marvel Masterwork. The color restoration is slightly better then the Cave Girl volume where the quality for a couple stories were inferior to the rest. The restoration is much better then the color Xerox's of say PS Artbooks, but no where as good as a Marvel Masterwork. All the dot matrix coloring has been converted to solid colors and the bleeding over the line blotches have been removed.Bob Powell art is excellent here and he really excels at the Science Fiction settings. This art is comparable to the excellent EC comics work done by Wally Wood and Al Williamson. His knowledge of then current Air Craft and Military equipment saves the rather generic later done War Stories from being a disappointment. The writing is thought to be the work of then M.E. Comics workhorse Gardner Fox. Fox also did most the other recent collections of M.E. Comics like Thunda, Ghost Rider and Cave Girl. There is some speculation that Powell have written, co-written or plotted some of these stories. Regardless they are superior to the above listed efforts. While these stories are totally zanny and unbelievable they are intricately plotted with a lot happening in each story. The stories all run a mere seven to ten pages each.In the very first episode we meet the evil Mr. Sinn who is unfortunately a racist Yellow Peril stereotype. Dr. Sinn has created a machine which is causing worldwide Earthquakes and massive destruction. It is up to Jet Powers and his Graviton Gun to save the day.The stories run the gamut from Alien Invasion, Time Travel , Giant Grasshoppers, Robot's gone wild and Animals on the loose. Jet also gets involved in war between the friendly Martians and The Evil Venusians. In one of the most startling stories a Radioactive Death Dust settles on the earth killing most of the population before Jet Powers can invent a remedy for the survivors. The book has a tighter continuity then you would expect for a book published in 1951 . Not only do villains reappear but some stories are direct sequels to others. The Martian War and The Death Dust stories both get a follow up story. The only other major re-occuring character is the beautiful Su Shan. She is of Asian decent and modeled after Milton Caniff's Dragon Lady. Su Shan and Jet Powers have a very bizarre relationship. She appears in the very first episode as Dr. Sinn's assistant. When Dr. Sinn throws her out of his plane, Jet rescues her. In the next couple episodes she appears to be being held in Jet's underground laboratory against her will. Twice she tries to leave and return to Dr. Sinn. When Jet rescues her the for a third time she starts kissing him and now they are boyfriend and girlfriend.Recommended.

A conscripted soldier is beginning to consider her life after the war and the family she has left behind. But for Scur—and for humanity—peace is not to be.On the brink of the ceasefire, Scur is captured by a renegade war criminal, and left for dead in the ruins of a bunker. She revives aboard a prisoner transport vessel. Something has gone terribly wrong with the ship.Passengers—combatants from both sides of the war—are waking up from hibernation far too soon. Their memories, embedded in bullets, are the only links to a world which is no longer recognizable. Review 2016 American Library Association Reading List Honor TitleA UK Guardian Best Science Fiction and Fantasy Book of 2015A Buzzfeed June 2015 PickLocus 2015 Recommended Reading List: Best Novella2016 Locus Award shortlist2016 Hugo nominated novella“What happens to survivors at the end of an interstellar war? In the latest from Reynolds ("Revelation Space" series), refugees, soldiers, and criminals are loaded aboard the same vessel and plunged into cryo-suspension. When Scur wakes in her capsule, she's confused, as it seems far too soon and no one is in charge. With the ship's computer in terminal decline and the only stable source of information the slow bullets injected into their bodies, Scur and the other passengers must decide what's more important, their personal lives or the larger fate of humanity. VERDICT While shorter than Reynolds's usual fare, this is no less ambitious in covering vast scopes of space and time while addressing big questions. Suggest to fans of Ian MacDonald or Kim Stanley Robinson, particularly those who liked Aurora.”—Library Journal, starred review“Reynolds does his usual fine job of creating a compelling narrative out of the classic materials of space opera as viewed through a modern sensibility and an awareness of the real science of space travel. Recommended.”—Asimov’s “This is not military science fiction, this is war opera. Recommended!”—Bewildering Stories “A fine example of the true science fictionist’s art. . . .”—Michael Bishop, author of A Funeral for the Eyes of Fire, And Strange at Ecbatan the Trees, and Transfigurations“Alastair Reynolds is the world's best writer of space opera. If you have any doubts, then read Slow Bullets.”—Allen Steele, author of Coyote and Spindrift“The writing is tight, the characters are well developed, and the story itself moves along at a cracking pace.”—Science Fiction & Fantasy Book Corner“Slow Bullets is classic science fiction, a space opera, a puzzle story, a character study, visionary science fiction, and a prayer for peace. I see no reason why you should not love it.”—Michael Swanwick, author of Tales of Old Earth and Dancing with Bears“Slow Bullets is a huge leap forward for Alastair Reynolds”—Strange Horizons“Alastair Reynolds weaves a tapestry of dark, dystopian societies in a tense, colorful narrative.”—New York Journal of Books“a great introduction to Reynolds’ style and skill.”—Fantasy Literature“...his writing mixes spartan style, provocative ideas, and flashes of dark humor.... Reynolds excels at weaving different threads together....”—Los Angeles Review of Books“It’s a more intimate vision than what I encountered until now in Reynolds’ books, but for this very reason it felt more profound and poignant than any other I read so far, and it gave me a new level of interpretation for this author, and a key to a new way of reading his stories. Highly recommended, both for Reynolds' admirers and as an introduction to this author.”—Space and Sorcery“Slow Bullets is a tightly focused tale that moves forward at a brisk and entertaining pace. It is a satisfying story of survival mixed with an intriguing mystery.”—HoloWriting“...eminently worthwhile...”—Green Man Review“Slow Bullets captured my attention and did not let up until the ride was over.... Highly recommended.”—SFFWorld“Highly recommended”—Best Science Fiction Books “...a captivating first-person narrative...”—Wales Arts Review “Slow Bullets, the new novella by Alastair Reynolds is space opera condensed into one of its most potent forms. Mystery, conflict, crisis, strange aliens and a story of interstellar scope - you’ll find it all...”—Worlds in Ink “Fantastic little piece of space noir. It's not often a short novella will congruously go places the reader could not even guess in the first few pages, but this story does so flawlessly. As always, Reynolds writes excellent female protagonists, who get to have identities not at all anchored to their gender.—Fat Robot“Stylistically this is a masterpiece to behold. Slick and polished, Slow Bullets will please the palette of any reader of any genre, not just science fiction.”—Open Book Society“...effortlessly genius and impossible for me to put down.”—Little Red Reviewer“Slow Bullets is a confident read from Reynolds that will please fans and newcomers alike, and hopefully it will draw in new readers and encourage them to explore more of the writer’s work. I imagined that I might have blacked out from the pain and come around again only a few minutes later. But once I was able to assess my condition I realised that there was no longer any pain anywhere in my leg. I felt neither the bullet nor my self-inflicted wound.I was also not in the bunker.I was still on a sort of bed but it was soft and it did not smell of piss. It felt as if it had been made for me, shaped exactly for the contours of my own body. I was thirsty, my throat uncomfortably dry, and I was cold enough to shiver. But I was not dead.I was very glad about not being dead. All the same, I had no idea of my whereabouts. Wherever I was, it was not quite silent. From a distance I heard a sort of continuous low drone, like machines. Once in a while, as I lay there, I thought I heard a human voice.I reached out and felt curving surfaces of metal and plastic. They enclosed me like an egg. By then I was starting to guess what had happened. In the skipships we travelled in hibernation, what we called hibo, so that the authorities could squeeze more soldiers into one transport, without having toworry about provisions and living space. This felt like a hibo capsule. So I was being repatriated.Soldiers must have reached me in the bunker, sent me to be patched up, then handed over to the peacekeepers. I was in one of their ships. My egg—my hibo capsule—made a sudden noise and opened itself. It came apart in two halves and a red light shone through the widening gap. The light must still have been dim but I had been in the dakr long enough that I needed to squint.I did not have my uniform or combat equipment on. Someone had dressed me in silver trousers and a silver top. The material felt strong and clean, but it was also very thin. The top had short sleeves and did up with a simple sash around the middle. I felt as if it was the sort of thing a child or a sick person would be made to wear.It was useless against the cold.Gradually my eyes began to pick out more details of my surroundings. My capsule was one of many in a long, curving corridor. Of course you know these corridors for yourself. When I say “curving”, I mean that it curved up and out of sight in both directions. On the opposite wall of the corridor another row of hibo capsules. It was not only mine that had come open in two halves: there were about a third of them already open. You may think I was instantly at home in the ship but it was not like that at all. I had travelled in skipships before, but I had never been awake for any part of the journey. I know it is hard for you to grasp the concept of there being more than one skipship, let alone thousands. But that it how it was before the wakening.

28 of 29 people found the following review helpful. slightly disappointed By Fitz I really enjoy Alastair Reynolds' other work, especially Revelation Space series and his short stories, but I am slightly disappointed with this one. The plot of Slow Bullets is rather thin, the characters and detail don't feel fully developed. Overall it feels like the first draft of a short story that has been padded out to novella length and rushed to print. It's O.K but not his best work.

A thin story outline dressed as a novella - disappointed given my high regard for Alastair Reynolds By Marc Gough Alastair I really love your usual work, but this novella is only a story outline and I feel that I have been misled into pre-ordering what I thought would be a grand novel from you, only to receive a short story stretched out with large print and extra line spacing. No more pre orders for me.

We've been given the middle third of what could have been a really good book By Bryan G There are flashes of that Reynolds brilliance, but overall this story is way too short and undeveloped. The "slow bullets" idea is intriguing, but is introduced too casually; the big punchline later just doesn't bite, because there hasn't been enough buildup. Basically, we've been given the middle third of what could have been a really good book.
