Wishful Wedding: A Pocketful of Pride, by A.S Chung

From the Author LGBT equality has always been very much part of my beliefs and I am often frustrated when I am confronted by exasperating homophobic news. My agenda however is geared towards children of same gender families and how difficult that must be growing up in a society and community where it is not often understood and sometimes still considered a stigma. It is unjust, especially when they have parents who have made a conscious decision to raise a child in a loving family environment. A recent divorce prompted the writing chapter of my life. I started writing to show my then 4 year old daughter that we could face this life challenge together and I did so through loving words and beautiful illustrations. Stories with a message for children from same gender families just became a natural extension of my writing. I felt the issues of marriage equality needed to be highlighted in a gentle manner whilst also reminding the generations to come that this was once upon a time an incredulous issue we had to face. More importantly, I believe that we need more LGBTQ literature for younger children so they know no different and that they will grow up in a world where diverse family units just simply exist. I long for the day when we don't have to associate pride with the words "tolerance" and "acceptance". We need more exposure and education in our schools, libraries and media. Our children can pave the way for the future.

Touching tale of a little girl's special wish By michelle eastman The rhyming text and colorful illustrations work together to share a little girl's mixed emotions about her aunt's wedding. Although she is happy for her aunt and excited to serve as her flower girl, she wishes her two fathers could declare their love at their own ceremony. Chung does a great job of exploring the topic of same-sex marriage from a child's point of view. It's a great book to share with children to spark conversation about the similarities and differences between our families and the universal nature of love.

Such a delight to share with my family By Susan Day (Author/Illustrator Astro's Adventures) I think this is one of the most important books I have reviewed this year. It gracefully touches on the subject of same sex marriage through the eyes of a little girl. The little girl has the grand duty of being a flower girl – a very exciting experience I can recall when I was four. The wedding is for her father’s sister. There is the normal excitement and joy as the day approaches and our protagonist becomes involved in the preparations. While she can identify with the bride and groom’s joy, she also notices that her fathers are sad because they can’t get married and share their love.I love the fact that the author doesn’t give her character a name. Even though we don’t realise it a name can have different meanings and can identify with times, emotions and memories. By keeping her character nameless, I believe that Ms Chung allows her young readers to immediately identify with the character and develop empathy for her plight.I adore these illustrations and truth be known, I’m a little jealous of the clever artist who created them. They are real. And by that I mean they are organic and perhaps naïve but not in a silly way. The illustrations are fluid, bright and yet very carefully constructed. They reflect the joy of the wedding and the busyness of the wedding day. The dark lines also contain our joy and act to remind us of the very serious boundaries set on same sex couples. They are brilliant and captivating.Same sex marriage is being allowed in more and more countries. In my own home, Australia, it still hasn’t happened but we are ever hopeful. Hopeful that two people regardless of their gender can express their love and commitment to each other.I am equally hopeful that this lovely book, Wishful Wedding, will soon become a historical piece where we can sit down and read it to our children and our grandchildren and say, “Yes, believe it or not there was a time when gender equality didn’t exist.” I hope that day comes soon.

Chung has done an excellent job of introducing the topic of same sex marriage into her latest book Wishful Wedding: A Pocketful of Pride.Cleverly written and vibrantly illustrated. Wishful Wedding is a heartfelt story told through the eyes of a little girl who witnesses the inequality of marriage. The story offers an emotional glimpse into the realities of modern family life. The little girl is very excited for her Aunt’s wedding. At the same time, she recognizes the sadness of her father’s inability to marry. All the while, the little girl remains hopeful that one day her two father’s love can be recognized and celebrated too.I would highly recommend this book to open up dialogue and discussions about love and marriage.
