A real man needs a real love… To become the man he’s meant to be, one cowboy will have to be the man he never wanted anyone to know he was… Ryder Dent is a true-blue cowboy. A devoted son, husband and father, but one who is living a costly lie. When they were both young, Ryder and his closest female friend Andi thought they’d found the perfect solution to both their problems—she was single and pregnant, and he was secretly gay—so they got married and raised Jonas together. When Ryder gets hurt at a party, his son’s new pediatrician comes to the rescue. The connection between Ryder and Dr. Declan Winters is sudden, powerful, and undeniable. Ryder loves Andi and the family they’ve created together—but they both need more. Can they pursue their hearts’ desire without destroying the life they’ve built and losing the son they love? Praise for Z. A. Maxfield: “Z. A. Maxfield has a lyrical way of writing that makes it easy to escape into the world that she creates for her characters.”—Night Owl Reviews "The thing that you managed to pull off that made […] me happy was that ePistols at Dawn was also a damn good story and a hot, exciting romance.”—Dear Author “Maxfield has written another gem and a winner. Run, don’t walk, to get a copy of Stirring Up Trouble today.”—ReviewsbyJessewave.com Z. A. Maxfield started writing in 2007 on a dare from her children and never looked back. Pathologically disorganized, and perennially optimistic, she writes as much as she can, reads as much as she dares, and enjoys her time with family and friends. If anyone asks her how a wife and mother of four manages to find time for a writing career, she’ll answer, “It’s amazing what you can accomplish if you give up housework.” Her published books include My Cowboy Heart, My Heartache Cowboy, My Cowboy Homecoming, Crossing Borders, Epic Award finalist St. Nacho’s, Drawn Together, ePistols at Dawn, Notturno, Stirring Up Trouble, and Vigil.

By Roroblu'sMum A ZA Maxfield tale is always well-told, and this was no exception, except, pardon me, that I wondered what had happened to the editor of this tale. Had he/she given up the ghost? I cannot believe that this tale was marketed as a romance, and a whole novel at that, not a serialised or part1/part2 tale, because that ending totally didn't do it for me. It had me wondering what happened to the three adults at the core of the tale, it had me wondering about the supposed love between the males, and it had me wondering about whether there actually could or would be a HEA, and how the leads could live in their Texan bible belt town, with the many secrets that came out. And yes, there was a whammy of secrets.I have to say that the tale started off well and that it's one with a premise that I'd not encountered in a western-set tale, and certainly not a contemporary one, and it promised a lot, seemed to be heading to giving me all that I need from a romance, but then it fell short. I am not sure if the editor didn't read it til the end, and/or if the author couldn't be bothered or couldn't figure out where to take the tale and how to end it, but that was o ending at all. NOTHING was tied up. Not the marriage, not the leads's togetherness, not the situation with the child, not the new career, not their possible future lives - nothing. This really shouldn't have been marketed as a romance, as I didn't hear those all-important words uttered out loud, other than between the wrong people, and there was no HEA or even HFN.. I hated the bigotrythat was left up in the air, as was the tale. I am only glad that I paid far, far less than the current asking price.

I usually do really enjoy this authors work. I personally wouldn’t tag this as a cowboy book. More of a small town good old boy comes out of the closet and faces all the BS that brings with it story. The story is told from Ryder’s POV only. I would have liked to see things from Declan’s POV. He came off as almost too good to be true. Hunky young doctor comes to down and knocks Ryder’s world off kilter. He was not born and raised in Bitterroot and his view on the social politics that confined Ryder might have helped me feel some compassion for their situation. Instead of being mostly frustrated with it. It also would have given me a break from Ryder’s constant angsty martyr routine.Ryder grew up in Bitterroot with his best friend Andi. Andi is a rich horse rancher’s daughter and wild at heart. A crazy weekend as a teenager in the city leaves her pregnant and afraid of the shame that stigma places on her from the gossiping small town people and the wrath of her father. The sperm donor wants nothing to do with her or the baby and she’s underage. So her gay best friend steps up to marry her. Both because he’s a good friend and it helps him put his desire for men on the back burner under the guise of more important things. Like raising a child and supporting a family.I grew up in a small town. So I can relate to the gossiping and the need to keep up appearances to avoid being the one gossiped about. This book just seemed to take it to an entirely different level. One I can’t help by lay at Andi’s feet. Yes, she was afraid and took the safest and easiest way out. Something Ryder was willing to offer. Great! I get the impulse to avoid the scrutiny and tidy up the mess she found herself in as quickly as possible. However, their relationship just never seemed fair to me. Not only because they were denying themselves love, but because Andi never seemed to consider Ryder’s feelings. She came off as flippant and selfish and I just could not ever like the woman no matter how amazing Ryder thought she was. I understand how they made their life in the town that looks down on them and now they feel stuck in it, but she claims to never care what her father thinks but bows to him even though he’s a completely bigoted chauvinistic prick who cares more about appearances than his own family. I just can’t ever see choosing the guy who gave up his football scholarship and future to help me save face by marrying me. One who has taken upon himself the role of father to my child, for a guy who constantly makes him feel like s***. I could see her taking his crap but not standing up for Ryder made me have no respect for her. I did appreciate how they both wholeheartedly loved that little boy. It’s just a shame Ryder got very little consideration when he expressed his fear of losing his son. This book is pretty much Ryder’s coming out story. He has a soap opera worthy ton of baggage that comes with him. Declan is very accepting and understanding of his circumstances. The few times Declan asks the questions we’re all wanting to know, he’s rebuffed and shamed because how can anybody feel not having a love life isn’t worth it if he gets to keep his son in his life. How dare Ryder get both! Growing up in a small town you can feel very isolated and forget there’s a whole other world out there. I can see how it would be easy to buy into the “we’re stuck here but we have each other” thing Andi and Ryder had going but it was never going to last. Declan showing up and waking up desires in Ryder makes them question how they’ve been living. Outsider perspective helps them see they can’t stay this way forever. The guys fall for each other pretty quickly once they get physical. Ryder is 23 and never kissed a man or done any of the things he fantasizes about. Giving up intimacy, love and sexual release with another man now that he’s found it isn’t an option. This book was full of angst and drama. Kind of a weird love triangle about a married man, his wife and the new boyfriend. No cheating since the husband and wife were never romantically involved. There’s a kid needing consideration at every turn. Bigoted towns people. Awful parents who control and belittle their children instead of supporting and loving them when they need it most. A little insta love and lust. Not a bad read but kind of slow and full of small town drama. I wasn’t sad to see it end.
5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. TREAT YOURSELF AND BUY THIS BOOK! A GREAT READ! By Ontheother hand I chose to write this review because I couldn't let stand the poor reviews that some people found it necessary to write! I thought this was a terrific read, filled with three dimensional characters and an intricate, unusual plot. I found the lead characters perfectly human (with the usual human frailties) and quite charming. The unusual trio ending I found most satisfying and the three people thereof, quite brilliant in their decision. The unusual, but completely loving relationship in the marriage, was touching. The characterization of Jonas, the little boy was right on the mark. I found this quite the page turner, and I would highly recommend it to other readers - don't believe the naysayers as they are totally wrong. I know that the characters will remain bright in my memory. Bravo Z.A. Maxfield for a stunningly lovely book!
