By Richard Once again the convict army and their tanks are pressed into service against the Emflife in a impossible situation against impossible odds.Meanwhile Umi and the fellow Siggs race to Earth to deliver the pendant. Then they must battle for a greater prize and rush to save another world.Steel Reach provides two exciting stories that mesh together in a climax that will have major implications as the series continues.I rate it R for violence and language. For fans of the genre, it is a great read.

Livingood Casey Calouette writes the kind of science fiction I LOVE...lots of space, Marines, action and Aliens. Now, I cut my teeth on the likes of Asimov and Heinlein, and always considered Joe Haldeman the master of military SF. Casey writes exactly what I want to read, and DOES IT WELL. His writing is crisp and colorful, his characters real and realized, the scenarios are believable and well set up, and there is plenty of 'military' to keep it centered in that genre.Steel Breech and Steel Storm are up in the 'perfect' category to me. I'm reading it again, just because I cannot seem to find another that is as entertaining. Casey has another series on Amazon (Trial by Ice, Edge of Solace, Edge of Redemption) that I have read that are also excellent.So many interesting story lines are defeated by the shallow characters,

Both grandfathers (family) fought on Western Front WWI and most also in WWII. 'Wrong ' side but trench warfare and Eastern Front, Tanks-Mech warfare (my dad was 'volunteered' into Deutschland Div) has always held special interest for me. So this series hit a home run with me, provided author could write reasonably well and convey the military aspects properly -- And He Did, as he's done before.It's a good solid read BUT you have to read first book in series. Without having read first, confusing would be under statement.Author understands and wrote, described trench and tank warfare very well.He also uses understandable future military technology , unlike many who envision future warfare with ridiculous weapons, tech. That was a joy alone.Last, I enjoyed the convict part. I know -- done before but not quite like this. Many today, public and military, really hype up how smart we (military) are and how 'clean' their backgrounds are. I joined when many had questionable education and law abiding backgrounds. Obviously, not good enough for today's military. I'll comment at times in discussions with today's cadre by simply stating -- I'll fight you any time, any place, you take 100 PHDs and I'll take 100 inmates from Cook County. I know, not fair. Like bringing a knife to a gun fight. The responses I get are humorous especially from those who've never been.So, the cons are right on for me, all way too credible and makes this an enjoyable read.
