The Roman Household: A Sourcebook (Routledge Sourcebooks for the Ancient World), by Jane F. Gardner, Thomas Wiedemann

Review As with slavery, that other fundamental institution of the Roman World, materials on family and household are maddeningly diffuse, fragmented, and therefore rather difficult to find and use. That a good selection of the primary source materials on Roman households has been assembled, and that new translations have been provided for these sources, should be gratefully accepted as a considerable boon to teachers and students and alike.

About the Author Jane F. Gardner is a senior lecturer, department of classics, University of Reading and curator of the Ure Museum of Greek Archaeology.Wiedemann is Professor of Latin at the University of Nottingham.

Remembrance: Book Four (The Celtic Vampyre Saga) 260 pages (print length) Upon learning that Martha has commandeered the body of his new love, Faelynn, a frantic and puzzled Nathaniel seeks the help of a powerful clairvoyant, Elisabetta Orzic. Elisabetta pushes her supernatural abilities to their limits only to learn that Goddess Toleka has no plans of letting anyone undo her handiwork without suffering harsh ramifications. Even though Elisabetta is unable to disentangle the knot of chaos that Goddess Toleka has weaved, she uncovers the truth about Faelynn. The knowledge that Faelynn is not what Nathaniel thinks she is rocks him to his core. To make matters worse, Nathaniel gets a surprise visit from Cormack, who only hours previously survived an assassination attempt in the bowels of his own castle at the hands of Faelynn. He comes to Nathaniel not as an agent of vengeance, but as a diplomat—a diplomat with an olive branch in one hand and a blood-soaked shillelagh in the other. Cormack is also aware of what Goddess Toleka has done, and wants Martha to be placed back into her body before it’s too late. Ironically, for the first time in both the vampyres’ lives, time is not on their side. Will Nathaniel play ball and agree to put their differences aside for one night and work with his brother to find a solution? Or will Nathaniel trust his instincts and refuse Cormack’s help since he has burned him—figuratively and literally—not once, not twice, but umpteen times in the past. This intriguing and passionate saga would be attractive to the habitual readers of Gothic literary works, paranormal romance, and horror. *Warning: Some scenes within Remembrance: Book Four (The Celtic Vampyre Saga) contain graphic language and explicit violence.* Reviews: “Remembrance: Book Four is a moody piece that takes you deeper beneath the surface of The Celtic Vampyre Saga. It’s a fascinating character study, yet at the same time the overall story progresses nicely with satisfying payoffs throughout. I can tell that there’s still a lot more to come from the heroes and villains in this series.” – Veronica Salva, New Hampshire Gothic Horror Review. “C.K. Farrell’s writing has a tendency to swerve towards darkness at any given moment and I LOVE it for that reason.” – D’arcy Ondine, Artist, Poet, and Author.

As others have mentioned, this is a series that would be amazing on the big screen. The suspense is killer, the characters are deep and complex, and the multiple arcs keep you constantly on edge and wondering what will happen next. There's an amusing dark humor that runs throughout. Nathaniel's smirky, snide remarks in response to other's indignity and accusations cracked me up more than once. Like when Sinead tells him he'll pay for killing her brother, and he natters on about how he's killed a lot of brothers and has no clue which one she's referring to, but he's sure he ended the life on a creative yet barbaric manner. Nice. Elsewhere things are not so humorous, as Cormack finds medieval habits difficult to shake. Little bloodshed anyone? The peppery and direct Nathaniel may be the only one capable of bringing his dangerously paranoid and more than a little explosive brother to heel. It's hard to imagine these two ever joining forces long enough to work together but their antagonistic relationship makes the story that much more exciting. Can't wait to read the next book!

Their past started like a beautiful fairytale and then it ended in hell, but what truly happened it’s what truly gives you the chills.By now we know that their past was dark and that Faelynn’s is part of that immense hole. The truth involving Faelynn’s real heritage explains a lot of what it’s going to happen and maybe how she will get out of the problem. Will Nathaniel arrive in time to save her? Would they finish their enemies to truly be together on the end? I guess you’ll have to read this part to find out ;)

I would like to commend the author for his choice of vocabulary especially on the word "pootled". Out of all of the books I have read in my lifetime, this is the first time I've come across this word. I've heard of "pootail" when my husband calls to his hound dogs but never have I heard of "pootled".Either way, the book is very much worth reading for anyone interested, but you have to read from Book 1 and through the saga. No skipping around.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The Aftokrator Humanoid Neighbor Battles By Talvi I am greatly enjoying this series (and anime) quite a bit! With volume 7, we get some bigger bad guys (black triggers with horns!) and a hint as to why Earth is raided for Trion (Chika would make a 'new god'???). Osamu and Yuma take a backseat as the Border teams as they battle the rabits and then an entirely new enemy - Aftokrator's horned trion constructs. It's all about teamwork this volume.Story: A large scale invasion has begun and Yuma is worried - the enemy strategy makes no sense unless they have an ulterior motive or a trick up their sleeve. Jin's side effect has been triggered, however, and his precog ability tells him the worst possible outcome is Osamu's death. The other agents may not understand why a little weak B-rank is so important, but they all do trust Jin. Meanwhile, the invaders have realized there is a Trion user on Earth with huge potential - Chika. A secondary objective is to obtain her; to do so, they send their specially engineered highly skilled triggers. Each trigger has special horns to enhance their abilities. It will take all the skill (and superior number advantage) of the Border teams to protect Chika and the city. The series continues to have fun with shounen action series conventions: Osamu is still pretty weak as a fighter but what he brings is assets - both Chika and Yuma wouldn't be in border otherwise. Jin recognizes, of course, that Osamu's importance doesn't come from fighting but on the softer skills. I like that Osamu nor Yuma are idiots who get lucky a lot - each brings something important to the table. With this volume, we get to see those who taunted Osamu and Yuma in the ranking battles in action - and see that they really are quite good. There are some fun strategies used to confuse, detain, or defeat the Aftokrator triggers.World Trigger remains fun without being repetitive (as sometimes happens with other action series such as this one). I look forward to every volume. Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided by the publisher.

By Kimberly Rice Once again, Ashihara shows his magnificent ability to draw clean, easy-to-understand fight scenes and juggle high-level, complicated strategies. There are several thrilling fights throughout the volume, introducing some engaging and likable villains. Casual readers beware, though: several chapters focus on some (currently) minor characters fighting an enemy, and it can be hard for people other than World Trigger fanatics to keep track of who's who and what they're like. Nonetheless, this is another great World Trigger volume. Ashihara really excels at making long, drawn-out battles that still engage the reader.

Shiloh James is the quintessential good girl. Despite the devil whispering in her ear, she has decided to wait and trust that God can send the perfect man into her life. He would be a righteous and good man. He definitely would not be the National Basketball Association’s premier bad boy, Romeo Knight. From Shiloh’s first encounter with Rome there was something incredibly explosive between them, but not in a good way. Romeo Knight was annoyingly arrogant, incredibly selfish and inexcusably defiant. He was a wild haired, tatted up menace to society. Absolutely nothing like the Boaz she dreamed of. But dreams are one thing… and Romeo Knight was all together, something else. When Rome’s hot temper gets him indefinitely suspended from the NBA, God instructs Shiloh to help him. Although reluctant at first, she yields to the Holy Spirit, and slowly but surely watches Rome transform into the man God called him to be. Now she must determine if Romeo Knight is ready to be the man who will possess her heart.

Tina was moving with her umbrella on her head. The weather was cold and it was evening time. It was raining heavily and strong wind was blowing. Tina was coming back home from shopping in the market. When she stepped out of the home in the afternoon then the weather was not so bad. In the afternoon time the weather was pleasant as there were some clouds on the sky and there was some wind blowing gently. Tina made a right decision to take the umbrella with her as it could be raining at any time. Now she was enjoying the weather as she had her umbrella on her head.

When he turns to short stories he demonstrates an early mastery of the medium – a brief story with well sculpted characters, a fine sense of atmosphere, and the ability to create a mood that is transportingNauman’s story is one of coincidences – three women (Lucy, Nasira and Tina) meet serendipitously and due to inclement weather depend on each other, offering aid in a storm. The three women face dilemmas – missing children of one of the women, a thief, a lost friend – incidents made more dramatic by cold weather and the odd way such weather binds people. The general flavor is apparent from the first lines - Tina was moving with her umbrella on her head. The weather was cold and it was evening time. It was raining heavily and strong wind was blowing. Tina was coming back home from shopping in the market. An unfiltered view into the making and unraveling of a love affair By Ulli Bisono I just finished reading this book, and it is hard to categorize: it is not an autobiography in the classic sense, and not a typical novel either. It allows the Reader an unfiltered, almost voyeuristic view into the raw emotions and processes of the rise and fall of a true affair. The author falls in love with a man who she later realizes is married - but by the time this truth becomes evident, she is in too deep. Her journey through hope, heartbreak and ultimate redemption allows the Reader to comprehend how affairs can evolve beyond what either of the lovers had initially hoped or planned, and it shares some valuable life lessons about self-worth and acceptance.Disclaimer: The current edition of this book is only available in a bilingual version (German/English), and assumes that the reader is fluent in both languages.

Let me start by saying Violet was one crazy, deranged chick. She hated rejection. She asked for everything she received from Andrial. Angel, well not sure how to feel about her this go round. Mika though, shoot when pushed, a woman will do what has to be done. O, how I can't wait for the next installment. Listen up fans of Nicety, when you want a Fiyah read always choose my girl. This book is a must read just like all the others. Once you start, I promise you will be hooked. Happy reading everyone!!!!

This book most definitely didn't disappoint and I can't wait to see what the hell happens. I really hope that Vega finds a woman that'll appreciate him and stop being so ignorant towards the cops. I hope Violet really pays for all the stuff she's done. Adrial; not too sure if he's a lost cause or what but I like him crazy as all hell. Karma served Angel up very nicely so what more could you want there? I hope that Mika and Ox's romance can fully blossom too. Hope that part 3 is even better!

Warning: This story contains content which is intended for readers over the age of 18. I had just started my senior year and was counting down the days until I turned eighteen. Graduation would follow shortly after. I couldn't wait to get away from my mom and her sleazy ways. She couldn't stay with a man for more than a few months. We moved from place to place, and it drove me crazy. The only thing she taught me was how to furnish an apartment for almost nothing. I only asked one thing of her. "Don't date anyone associated with my school." I usually kept to myself in school. There was no reason to make friends. I liked to spend my time in my room on my computer or at the park taking pictures. Pity wasn't something I wanted from the people around me. I didn't have what most kids in school had. It was easier to move when you only had a few boxes to pack. There was a message on my computer when I got home from school one day. It was from a guy who had seen me on a photography post. We were both seniors but knew nothing about each other or where we lived. I agreed to let him call me if we were still talking on my birthday. There was no way that was going to happen. There was a guy in one of my classes that was a total jerk. He didn't care what anyone thought about him. His name was Ethan. He was definitely nice to look at with his whole bad boy attitude, but the bad outweighed the good. I couldn't believe he was in my advanced class. Not everyone was as they seemed though. Everything was quiet until I opened my big mouth and pissed him off. It was definitely the biggest mistake I had made in a long time. Taken by My Bad Boy Stepbrother, Part 2 coming soon!

Her mother was boy crazy and because of it they moved a lot. The only thing Lauren wished was for a place to be called home for more than a month. She was very quiet and faded in the background but when she became friends with a young man that she calls Biker online she felt happy for the first time.Ethan's life was not a good one, he was very smart and had an attitude, that was a product of two irresponsible parents that only cared about their latest partners they had. He didn't have friends in school, he pretended to be this bad ass to cover the loneliness and hurt he felt thanks to his horrible parents.Ethan and Lauren have had a no so friendly friendship in school but when they are pushed in an awkward situation when her mother and his father start dating things will not be that fun anymore. But what about Biker, where is he falls into this crazy life that Lauren is facing thanks to her mother? Will Ethan and Lauren be able to be friends after all? This is one story you don't want to miss. It will shock you to your core and will leave your head spinning. You don't want to miss this awesome series.I recommend this book and series.Gifted by author in exchange for an honest review.

Ms Wilder has a way of building suspense and leaving her readers craving g and demanding more. This story is no exception. I love the fact that two main characters build such a passionate relationship without e enjoyed exchanging names, let alone knowing what the others look like. I cannot wait to read the next installment to this series!!!

Lauren (Sunshine) and Ethan (Biker) are wonderful together. They fill the voids in each other's lives, and they each bring out the best versions of themselves by being together. This story almost seems to flow organically, and by the time that the cliffhanger ending hits, you are primed for part two.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Great trilogy!!! By Leo Hott Looking to have a trilogy of Graphic Novels comparable in quality to Robert E. Howards trilogy's for the characters "Cormac Mac Art" & "Kull", I was very interested in this trilogy! I was a bit stand offish because the cover art & chapter pages are a bit to stylized for my taste. The earlier release of the "Cormac Mac Art" trilogy is black & white "Kull" & other graphic novels containing R.E.H. characters are all in beautiful color such as the many "Conan" offerings & "Cormac Fitzgeoffrey" in "Hawks of Outremer" & Robert E. Howard's Savage Sword Volume #1 & #2 that cover many other R.E.H. characters. So I was very interested in this trilogy being the only one offering "Solomon Kane" in brilliant color!!! Well I decided to go with this trilogy instead of the black & white offerings available & I am very glad I did!!! While the covers & title pages are extremely stylized the story boards are a bit more realistic & I noticed that this seems to improve as the trilogy progresses making volume #3 the most realistic artwork out of all three books. Please understand that even though the artwork in volume #1 is more stylized it is still very good portraying motion & action very well...even evoking emotion through the artwork! While the story line may have variations from Howards poetic prose it stays true to the spirit of Solomon Kane's adventures! I am very glad I chose this trilogy to add to my Robert E. Howard Graphic Novel collection!!! I am a huge fan of Robert E. Howard's work both as a R.E.H. purest & also enjoying the extensions to his work.

9 of 11 people found the following review helpful. Feels Like A Robert E. Howard Novel By Mel Odom When I think of hard-to-like heroes that I still root for, the first one that comes to my mind is Robert E. Howard's adventuring Puritan, Solomon Kane. The man dresses in black and can be an absolute downer with his puritanical ways, but when it comes to fighting men and the supernatural, few stand taller, swing a sword with more authority, or shoot straighter than Solomon Kane.Because he died at such a young age, Howard didn't get to leave as sizeable a legacy of Solomon Kane stories as fans might have wanted. In the last nearly 80 years since his debut, other authors have penned more Solomon Kane tales than Howard. Nearly all of them have been in comic form. That venue continues in the latest graphic novel release from Dark Horse Comics: Solomon Kane: The Castle of the Devil. Hellboy-creator Mike Mignola drew the awesome cover which immediately drew my eye, and interior artist Mario Guevara kept up the tone throughout the story written by Scott Allie. The graphic novel collects the first five issues of the new Dark Horse comics series, and I'm glad I read them in the collected edition. I couldn't imagine having to get and read this story piecemeal month by month. In fact, the book would be better read late at night when the house is quiet, or on a camping trip after everyone else has gone to bed. The atmosphere then would be a perfect reading experience. The book opens with an excellent action sequence that shows off Solomon Kane's deadly skills to their fullest, as well as the supernatural that flavors most of the stories. Guevara's art is fantastic, and Allie shows good sense in staying off the page and letting his artist carry the weight at this point. Then Allie comes back with brilliant dialogue that transports readers back hundreds of years. You just can't lose with a narrative hook that involves two wanderers on the trail to danger and adventure. At the castle, the mystery really deepens, and this is when the author's storytelling skill really shines. As I turned the pages, I could see the movie take shape in my head, guided by the gentle nudge of the panels showing the action and the characters. By that time, I knew I was hooked, and that if I'd been having to wait those months in between I would have been greatly frustrated. This graphic novel reads like a novel as the characters and events progress. Truths and dangers emerge, constantly twisting and changing. It's really good and I don't think many will sit down without reading it all in one go. But the story and characters are dense enough that you need to allow some time for the experience. As I stated, this reads like a novel, not a flipbook to adventure. The action and adventure really hits its stride in the final pages of the book. By midway I knew I wasn't going to put it down, but then when all the pieces fell into place and I knew who and what Solomon Kane was battling, I was hooked.Solomon Kane: The Castle of the Devil is a wonderful reading experience for those fantasy lovers who want a trip on the dark side, and for those comics readers that want more meat and potatoes with their stories. Solomon Kane is a great hero that you'll probably always hold at arms length, but he's wonderful to watch in action.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Shallow storytelling, with some creepy moments By RtRadke I bought this based on the strength of Scott Allie's work with the Hellboy/BPRD titles, including his writing on Abe Sapien Volume 3: Dark and Terrible and the New Race of Man. I'm not familiar with the character of Solomon Kane and this volume failed to interest me in the world or the character. I think the element missing here is emotion - the characters, even the guy who was supposed to be a scoundrel, are rather straight faced. It's possible Allie was a little too beholden to the source material. The art was done in a color-over-pencils style that I personally didn't care for. If you are a looking for a disturbing, nuanced "righteous prude versus the forces of darkness" series try Guy Davis's The Marquis Volume 1: Inferno instead. Incidentally, Guy Davis designed the creepy "angels" whose appearance in the last few chapters of this series are a highlight.

This is a suspense mystery book that will surely bring you to the world of imagination. Likewise I was became a detective throughout the story. This is my first time to witness or to read such content that really made me entertained and amazed. I would love to read more books from this author. James did a great job in presenting such awesome mystery book.

As a classical music lover myself, it was interesting to see the direction a good idea can take. The characters are strong and likable. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good mystery with a good story line.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. It Made my Night By Danielle Pangilinan This book totally nailed it! I like how it started and love how it ended. I had not looked at the summary description when I bought the book, I just decided to buy the book since I liked the title of the book. The plot is good and well-written. There were some disconnected events and mismatched scenes, but overall the story is nice. The way the book starts is not ordinary and you will not expect the ending for sure. I also like how the author did not involve any romance between the two detectives, it is rare.I had an idea of what would happen, but the author made me forget my guess. It means that the way it was written is great since me forgetting is unusual. The build up of the plot is well-developed. It was effective for me. The slow progress of the investigation to the abrupt resolution worked well. The characters are well-liked too. Main characters are not your typical main characters. They are hot and sexy. They do not take the spotlight. They share the stage with the other characters and made the story in harmony. I do not want to say more details about them, you should find out by yourself.I can see a lot of potential here, and I expect a lot of improvements from the author. Kudos!

He was sitting at the airport on a parked plane while officials decided if it was safe to let the passengers disembark. Of course, he reasoned, Africa was a place of tensions. That never changed. And he was landing in Ngawa, a small war-torn nation named in Swahili for a species of civet cat found there. He was in the same spot where a small commercial plane had been brought down with a rocket launcher only the week before. He wasn't afraid of war. Over the years, he'd become far too accustomed to it. He was usually called in when a counterespionage expert was wanted, but he had other skills, as well. Right now he wished he had more skill in diplomacy. He was going into Ngawa to get Tat out, and she wasn't going to want to let him persuade her.Tat. He almost groaned as he pictured her the last time he'd seen her in Barrera, Amazonas, just after General Emilio Machado had retaken his country from a powerful tyrant, with a little help from Rourke and a company of American mercs. Clarisse Carrington was her legal name. But to Rourke, who'd known her since she was a child, she'd always been just Tat.A minion of the country's usurper, Arturo Sapara, had tortured her with a knife. He could still see her, her blouse covered with blood, suffering from the effects of a bullet wound and knife cuts on her breast from one of Sapara's apes, who was trying to force her to tell what she knew about a threatening invasion of his stolen country. She was fragile in appearance, blonde and blue-eyed with a delicately perfect face and a body that drew men's eyes. But the fragility had been eclipsed when she was threatened. She'd been angry, uncooperative, strong. She hadn't given up one bit of information. With grit that had amazed Rourke, who still remembered her as the Washington socialite she'd been, she'd not only charmed a jailer into releasing her and two captured college professors, she'd managed to get them to safety, as well. Then she'd given Machado valuable intel that had helped him and his ragtag army overthrow Sapara and regain his country. She did have credentials as a photojournalist, but Rourke had always considered that she was just playing at the job. To be fair, she had covered the invasion in Iraq, but in human-interest pieces, not what he thought of as true reporting. After Barrera, that had changed. She'd signed on with one of the wire services as a foreign correspondent and gone into the combat zones. Her latest foray was this gig in Ngawa, where she'd stationed herself in a refugee camp which had just been overrun.Rourke had come racing, after an agonizing few weeks in Wyoming and Texas helping close down a corrupt politician and expose a drug network. He hadn't wanted to take the time. He was terrified that Tat was really going to get herself killed. He was almost sweating with worry, because he knew something that Tat didn't; something potentially fatal to her and any foreigners in the region. He readjusted the ponytail that held his long blond hair. His one pale brown eye was troubled, beside the one wearing the eye patch. He'd lost the eye years ago, in a combat situation that had also given him devastating scars. It hadn't kept him out of the game by a long shot, but he'd turned his attention to less physical pursuits, working chiefly for K. C. Kantor's paramilitary ops group as an intel expert, when he wasn't working for a covert government agency in another country.K.C. didn't like him going into danger. He didn't care what the older man liked. He suspected, had long suspected, that K.C. was his real father. He knew K.C. had the same suspicion. Neither of them had the guts to have a DNA profile done and learn the truth, although Rourke had asked a doctor to do a DNA profile of his assumed father. The results had been disturbing. Rourke's apparent father had been K.C.'s best friend. Rourke's mother had been a little saint. She'd never cheated on her husband, to Rourke's knowledge, but when she was dying she'd whispered to the doctor, Rourke's friend, that she'd felt sorry for K.C. when the woman he loved had taken the veil as a nun, and things had happened. She died before she could elaborate. Rourke had never had the nerve to actually ask K.C. about it. He wasn't afraid of the other man. But they had a mutual respect that he didn't want to lose.Tat was another matter. He closed his eye and groaned inwardly. He remembered her at seventeen, the most beautiful woman he'd ever seen in his entire life. Soft, light blond hair in a feathery cut around her exquisite face, her china-blue eyes wide and soft and loving. She'd been wearing a green dress, something slinky but demure, because her parents were very religious. Rourke had been teasing her and she'd laughed up at him. Something had snapped inside him. He'd gathered her up like priceless treasure and started kissing her. Actually, he'd done a lot more than just kiss her. Only the sudden arrival of her mother had broken it up, and her mother had been furious. She'd hidden it, smoothing things over. But then Tat's mother had taken Rourke to one side, and with quiet fury, she'd told him something that destroyed his life. From that night, he'd been so cold to Tat that she thought he hated her. He had to let her think it. She was the one woman on earth that he could never have.He opened his eye, grinding down on the memories before they started eating him alive again. He wished that he'd never touched her, that he didn't have the shy innocence of her mouth, her worshipping eyes, to haunt his dreams. He'd driven her into the arms of other men with his hatred, and that only made the pain worse. He taunted her with it, when he knew it was his own fault. He'd had no choice. He couldn't even tell her the truth. She'd worshipped her mother. She had passed away from a virus she'd caught while nursing others. Now Tat was alone, the tragic deaths of her father and young sister still haunting her months after they'd drowned in a piranha-infested river on a tour of local villages.Rourke had been at the funeral. He couldn't help the way he felt. If Tat was in trouble, or hurt, he was always there. He'd known her since she was eight and her parents lived next door to K.C., who was by that time Rourke's legal guardian, in Africa. Since Tat was ten years old and Rourke was fifteen, and he'd carried her out of the jungle in his arms to a doctor, after letting her get bitten by a viper, she'd been his. He couldn't have her, but he couldn't stop taking care of her. He knew his attitude puzzled her, because he was usually her worst enemy. But let her be hurt, or threatened, and he was right there. Always. Like now. He'd tried to phone her, but he couldn't get her to answer her cell. She probably knew his number by heart. She wouldn't even pick up when he called. Now she was here, somewhere close, and he couldn't even get information from his best sources about her condition. He remembered again the way she'd been in Barrera, bleeding, white in the face, worn to the bone, but still defiant. The steward walked down the aisle and announced that the rebels who held the airfield were allowing the passengers to leave after a brief negotiation. He even smiled. Rourke leaned over and unobtrusively patted the hide gun in his boot. He could negotiate for himself, if he had to, he mused. He called his contact, a man with a vehicle, to drive him to the refugee camp. This man was one of his few friends in the country. It was Bob Satele, sitting beside him, who had given him the only news of Tat he'd had in weeks."It is most terrible, to see what they do here," the man remarked as he drove along the winding dirt road. "Miss Car-rington has a colleague who gets her dispatches out. She has been most sympathetic to the plight of the people, especially the children.""Ya," Rourke said absently. "She loves kids. I'm surprised that Mosane hasn't had her killed." He was referring to the leader of the rebel coalition, a man with a bloodthirsty reputation."He did try," his contact replied, making Rourke clench his teeth. "But she has friends, even among the enemy troops. In fact, it was one of Mosane's own officers who got her to safety. They were going to execute her…"He paused at Rourke's harsh gasp.Rourke bit down hard on his feelings. "NATO is threatening to send in troops," he said, trying to disguise the anguish he felt. At the same time he didn't dare divulge what he knew; it was classified."The world should not permit such as this to happen, although like you, I dislike the idea of foreign nations interfering in local politics.""This is an exception to the rule," Rourke said. "I'd hang Mosane with my own hands if I could get to him."The other man chuckled. "It is our Africa, yes?""Yes. Our Africa. And we should be the ones to straighten it out. Years of foreign imperialism have taken a toll here. We're all twitchy about letting outsiders in.""Your family, like mine, has been here for generations," the other man replied."We go back, don't we, mate?" he said, managing a smile. "How much farther?""Just down the road. You can see the tents from here." They passed a truck with a red cross on the side, obviously the victim of a bomb. "And that is what happens to the medical supplies they send us," he added grimly. "Nothing meant for the people reaches them, yet outsiders think they do so much good by sending commodities in.""Too true. If they're not destroyed by the enemy, they're confiscated and sold on the black market." He drew in a breath. "Dear God, I am so sick of war.""You should find a wife and have children." His friend chuckled. "It will change your view of the world.""No chance of that," Rourke said pleasantly. "I like variety."He didn't, actually. But he was denied the one woman he did want. The refugee camp was bustling. There were two people in white lab coats attending the injured lying on cots inside the few big tents. Rourke's restless eye went from one group to another, looking for a blond head of hair. He was almost frantic with worry, and he couldn't let it show."She is over there," Bob said suddenly, pointing. And there she was. Sitting on an overturned crate with a tiny little African boy cradled in her arms. She was giving him a bottle and laughing. She looked worn. Her hair needed washing. Her khaki slacks and blouse were rumpled. She looked as if she'd never worn couture gowns to the opera or presided over arts ceremonies. To Rourke, even in rags, she would be beautiful. But he didn't dare let his mind go in that direction. He steeled himself to face her.Clarisse felt eyes on her. She looked up and saw Rourke, and her face betrayed her utter shock. He walked straight to her, his jaw set, his one brown eye flashing."Look here," she began before he could say a word, "it's my life."He went down on one knee, his scrutiny close and unnerving. "Are you all right?" he asked gruffly. She bit her lower lip and tears threatened. If she was hurt, in danger, mourning, frightened, he was always there. He'd come across continents to her, across the world, around the world. But he didn't want her. He'd never wanted her."Yes," she said huskily. "I'm all right.""Bob said you were captured, that they were going to kill you," he ground out, his scrutiny close and hot.She lowered her eyes to the child she was feeding. "A necklace saved my life.""That cross…" he began, recalling that her mother had given it to her and she never took it off1—except once, to put it around Rourke's neck in Barrera, just before he went into the capital city with Machado and the others, for luck."No." She flicked open the top button of her blouse. She was wearing a seashell necklace with leather thongs. He frowned."This little one—" she indicated the child in her arms "—has a sister. She was dying, of what I thought was appendicitis. I commandeered a car and driver and took her to the clinic, a few miles down the road. It was appendicitis. They saved her." She took the bottle away from the child's lips, tossed a diaper over one shoulder, lifted the child and patted him gently on the back to make him burp. "Her mother gave me this necklace, the little girl's necklace, in return." She smiled. "So the captain whose unit captured me saw it and recognized it and smuggled me out of the village." She cradled the child in her arms and made a face at him. He chuckled. "This is his son. His little girl and his wife are over there, helping hand out blankets." She nodded toward the other side of the camp.He whistled softly."Life is full of surprises," she concluded."Indeed."She looked at him with eyes that were quickly averted. "You came all this way because you thought I'd been kidnapped?"He shook his head curtly. "I didn't know that until I got here.""Then why did you come?" she asked. He drew in a long breath. He watched her cradle the child and he smiled, without sarcasm for once. "You look very comfortable with a child in your arms, Tat.""He's a sweet boy," she said. His mother came back and held out her arms, smiling shyly at Rourke before she went back to the others."Why did you come?" she asked him again. He stood up, jamming his hands into his khaki slacks. "To get you out of here," he said simply. His face was taut."I can't leave," she said. "There isn't another journalist in this part of the country. Someone has to make sure the world knows what's going on here.""You've done that," he said shortly. He searched her eyes. "You have to get out. Today."

He had to."THE STORY: Stanton Rourke is a mercenary who has been in love with Clarisse "Tat" Carrington for years. He has been cruel to her because he knows that he needs to stay away from her and hurting her is his best option. When he discovers that he was lied to years ago, he decides that he has to try and build the relationship he wants with Tat. Just when things seem to be going well, another disaster tears Tat and Stanton apart again. When the second challenge comes to this couple, Tat's actions are incomprehensible. I can't accept for one minute that amnesia means that she has to marry someone else and just abandon the man she loves. That entire plotline and the unwillingness of characters to tell the hero the truth just didn't work for me.I'm a Palmer fan and it does me no pleasure to give this book a low rating, but I did not think this is one of her better efforts.OPINION: This book just had too many problems keeping the couple apart for me. In addition, the reaction of the characters to those problems was just too incredible for me to believe and like the book or the characters. Stanton is a serious jerk for most of the book. He is unnecessarily cruel to the heroine. I understand his motives in wanting to put distance between them, but I don't see the reason that he has to tear her apart as he does. He knows that she is a good person and him trying to keep distance from her doesn't excuse his behavior.WORTH MENTIONING: There were lots of appearances and updates of recent characters from Palmer books.FINAL DECISION: This book just had too many misunderstandings and miscommunication for me. The hero was an incredible jerk for most of the book which I generally expect in Palmer books, but this was just too much for me.CONNECTED BOOKS: Most closely connected with TOUGH TO TAME and COURAGEOUS, this book has connections with the Long, Tall Texans series. It can be read as standalone.STAR RATING: I give this book 2 stars.

I don't know where to begin when telling how truly bad this book was. I skipped pages and had to force myself to read to the bitter end, and I do mean bitter. I loved Rouke in the previous books, not so much in untamed. The book just repeated the same theme over and over. Tat long suffering and Rouke a jerk. Where was the romance?

The reader gets the history of the two. Questions about their relationship and their lives were answered, including long-awaited revelations about the mysterious K. C. Kantor who figures prominently in Rourke's backstory. The suspense and intrigue were included but were not the focal point. A very satisfying read. Well worth the wait. It was also gratifying to visit familiar friend in Jacobsville.
