BOOK 3 IN THE BLACK TIDE RISING SERIES FROM THE NEW YORK TIMES BEST-SELLING AUTHOR. Sequel to To Sail a Darkling Sea and Under a Graveyard Sky. A hardened group of survivors fights back against a zombie plague that has brought down civilization. With the world consumed by a devastating plague that drives humans violently insane, what was once a band of desperate survivors bobbing on a dark Atlantic ocean has now become Wolf Squadron, the only hope for the salvation of the human race. Banding together with what remains of the U.S. Navy, Wolf Squadron, and its leader Steve Smith, not only plans to survive—he plans to retake the mainland from the infected, starting with North America. The next step: produce a vaccine. But to do that, Wolf Squadron forces led by Smith’s terrifyingly precocious daughters Sophia and Faith must venture into a sea of the infected to obtain and secure the needed materials. And if some of the rescued survivors turn out to be more than they seem, Smith just might be able to pull off his plan. Once more, exhausted and redlining Wolf Squadron forces must throw themselves into battle, scouring the islands of the Atlantic for civilization's last hope.About the Black Tide Rising Series:"Not only has Ringo found a mostly unexplored corner of the zombie landscape, he's using the zombie frame to tackle a broader theme: the collapse and rebirth of civilization. The zombie scenes are exciting, sure, but its the human story that keeps us involved. A fine series."—BooklistAbout Under a Graveyard Sky:“Ringo combines humor and horror in this strong series debut, the thinking reader’s zombie novel.”—Publishers Weekly About John Ringo:“[Ringo’s work is] peopled with three-dimensional characters and spiced with personal drama as well as tactical finesse.” —Library Journal“. . . About the Author John Ringo brings fighting to life. He is the creator of the Posleen Wars series, which has become a New York Times best-selling series with over one million copies in print. The series contains A Hymn Before Battle, Gust Front, When the Devil Dances, Hell’s Faire and Eye of the Storm. Adding another dimension to his skills, Ringo created nationally best-selling techno-thriller novels about Mike Harmon (Ghost, Kildar, Choosers of the Slain, Unto the Breach, A Deeper Blue, and, with Ryan Sear, Tiger by the Tail). His techno-thriller The Last Centurion was also a national bestseller. A more playful twist on the future is found in novels of the Looking-Glass series: Into the Looking Glass, Vorpal Blade, Manxome Foe and Claws That Catch, the last three in collaboration with Travis S. Taylor. His audience was further enhanced with four collaborations with fellow New York Times best-selling author David Weber: March Upcountry, March to the Sea, March to the Stars and We Few. There are an additional five collaborative spinoffs from the Posleen series: The Hero, written with Michael Z. Williamson, Watch on the Rhine, Yellow Eyes and The Tuloriad, all written with Tom Kratman, and the New York Times bestseller Cally’s War and its sequels Sister Time and Honor of the Clan, all with Julie Cochrane. In addition, Ringo is the author of military science fiction series Troy Rising with entries Live Free or Die, The Hot Gate, and Citadel. His science-based zombie apocalypse Black Tide Rising series includes Under a Graveyard Sky, and To Sail a Darkling Sea. A veteran of the 82nd Airborne, Ringo brings first-hand knowledge of military operations to his fiction.

I am a retired Army Infantry senior NCO, a retired Police Chief (it was a small department but it was all mine) and a retired Federal employee. Retired three times qualifies as old. I started reading science fiction when I was about 10 so that was almost sixty (FREAKING!!!!) years ago. When I was young, my favorite author was Robert Heinlein. There was nothing he wrote that i didn't devour and reread over and over again. He literally was with me during a lot of traumatic times and I really believe that i was a better man for knowing Robert Heinlein's works. Now I am old and I spend a great deal of time reading John Ringo who is every bit as influential with me as heinlein ever was. This is just another great series by John Ringo. I canb't rate this one any higher than any of his other novels because each and every one of them is at the top of my all time favorite list. I reread all of them.

Especially book 1 "Under a Graveyard Sky", as it lays the foundation. You CAN skip book 2, but if you enjoyed book 1 why would you?If you do enjoy a military heavy approach to the Zombie Apocalypse, this is the book for you. No magic, no fuss.If you believe teenagers are dangerous and teenage girls should qualify under WMD protocols, this book is for you.If you like a twisted sense of humor, then you should have been reading this series already.Sex is handled off screen, although there is one long discussion surrounding teenagers and sex that is a bit hilarious as they try to deal with...I don't want to give it away. Immaculate is the word. Some fun with stereotypes..."Do you know who I am?","Do you know what this is...?"You will laugh. You may cry.I cannot wait until December for the next book!!!!!I just realized I didn't talk about my rating of the book. In my humble opinion...I chose 4 instead of 5 stars because this book does not stand well by itself. I LOVED this book, but I do not feel it can be appreciated fully without reading the previous books.

Remes Bought this direct from Baen.tl;dirRingo delivers another solid entry in his "zombie" series, but his focus on minutia lowers this book to 3 stars.** SPOILERS **Book 2 left us with the intrepid Wolf Squadron leaving the Canaries to mount an attack on Gitmo. The goal is to get a real lab going so they can start producing vaccine and inoculate the submariners. It promised to be exciting. Finally, the submariners could get involved building zombie death boxes out of CONEX and start taking back the planet! The action might actually move to mainland USA!What we got instead was a David-Weber-like focus on military counseling sessions for Lt. Faith and more descriptions of the same clearance operations that were already done to death in the first two books. (Weber is famous for having entire chapters devoted to multiple characters sitting around a table detailing their dastardly plans and demonstrating their own rank hypocrisy while Our Heroes get their own chapters to have the same long conversations detailing how they will defeat the Bad Guys. Plus, Weber rarely advances the plot even over an 800+ page book. See his Safehold series; 7 books long and they are still steam powered.)The odd thing about the book is that quite a few cool plot advancements took place, but they got short shrift.* They cleared and freed Gitmo.* They landed a SpaceX ship on a Caribbean island and got some real doctors & scientists back.* They got some helicopters working.* Lots of babies started getting born.* They rescued Prince (King?) Harry from the Tower of London.* We finally learn who "Tom Walker" really is. (I won't spoil that in this review.)However, the Gitmo clearance happens in a day. Clearing the island for the spaceship to land takes 2 days. Rescuing the Prince/King takes a week of travel plus one day of operations. Tally up all of the pages describing these ops and it *feels* like it's about 15% of the book. The rest of the book contains multiple long conversations with, or about, Faith and how she needs to work with the new Marines from Gitmo. Finally, the author makes it crystal clear that Faith would have *no chance* at actually being a Marine in the old world because she couldn't hack it physically or scholastically. She's a good fit for fighting zombies, but she won't be officer material for another 5+ years. Whew, glad some characters finally admitted this. There is also a completely superfluous sub-plot regarding the contestants of "Survivor: Caribbean" getting rescued after months and months of being locked in an old spy station on the island. Ringo loves his gorgeous ladies, so we get a bunch of useless pages (because the story is so repetitive from prior books) describing how they survived, and now they pull the whole "Do you know who I am?" crap once rescued. It beggars belief that after 6+ months of hand-to-mouth survival that this particular attitude would also survive. This is 5-10% of the book where we didn't need the detail and the ideas have already been covered in prior books (Ishman, Hollywood exec who spanks Faith, etc.).And ultimately, that's my main beef with the book. The plot could have advanced quite a bit more but instead we are treated to more Marine PT, more Marine drama with Faith, chapters wasted on describing a rather dull trip from the Canaries to Gitmo, more of the same descriptions of clearing towns (we had a whole book of this in book 2), and other minutia. We get a (nearly) daily journal of events when it would be better to have entire weeks or months pass between chapters. I fully anticipate Ringo will be tired of this story long before the final chapters are delivered (see his "Troy Rising" series).
