His eyes seemed tired and haunted. “She says it’s time.”Paxon stared. On a beautiful, sunny day like this one? On a day when everything felt right, and it seemed that the world was at peace and life could go on indefinitely? How could this be?That was what he thought as he measured the scribe’s words and let their meaning sink in. He didn’t have to ask what Keratrix meant. He knew. He had known this was coming. He could see traces of that in her even now—small indicators of what she had been years ago.“Kind words, Paxon. But in spite of what you think you see, my passing is at hand. I must go to my rest in the way of all leaders of the order—and for that, I require your company. I wish you to make the journey with me to the Valley of Shale and the Hadeshorn, where I will be met and taken home. I would like to leave at once. Though I may look strong, I can feel myself failing. It is a scary thing to be strong one moment and know that in the next your life will be over. Will you accompany me?”“Of course,” he said at once. “Should I arrange transport?” He paused. “What happens once we get there?”She gave him that old, familiar smile. “Best wait and see for yourself. I am not as certain of it as I would like to be. And don’t give any further thought to arranging for an airship. Isaturin is taking care of that now. Just sit with me. Keep me company.”Paxon sat back. “Do the others in the Druid Order know this is happening?”She shook her head. “Keratrix will tell them once I am gone. If he tells them now, there will be an unending line of mourners and well-wishers, and I don’t think I can bear that. I want to depart this world quietly. You are closest to her and likely to notice first if any changes occur. She will be safe at Paranor from everything save herself. But she remained seated and added, “At some point, Chrysallin will discover the truth. I am convinced of it. I don’t know what effect it will have on her, but you need to be there to help her through it. So don’t fool yourself into thinking this will never happen. I worry that your decision not to tell her is more an avoidance than a kindness. You hope she will never remember what happened to her, what she had to do to save herself. But she will, Paxon. One day, she will. Don’t fail in this. Tell her soon. Chrysallin’s power is well documented in the records, and it is a powerful and sometimes unpredictable weapon.”He leaned forward. “I have been considering it. I am aware of the arguments for why I should tell her now. But I cannot get past the danger it poses if I am wrong.”She studied him a moment. “I know you would like this to simply go away, but I don’t think you can depend on that. So telling her in advance might be best. Use your good judgment on how to go about it if you decide to do so. She will listen to you. She adores you. Five years ago, it would have been hard to reveal the truth to her. But now she is grown; she is a woman, and her strength and maturity are much greater than when she first came to us.”He found himself amazed that Aphenglow Elessedil would take the time and effort to try to help with his sister when there was so much else she might be doing. But she was still Ard Rhys of the Fourth Druid Order, and she would have her priorities firmly in hand even at the end of her life. She would not deviate from who she had been and what she had done for well over a hundred years. That was her nature, a direct result of the demands of her position. She would want to set her house in order.“I owe you so much,” he said, the words escaping him before he could think better of them. “You’ve given me this life, and I will never forget that.”“You earned what you have, Paxon,” she said quietly. “No need to thank me for that.”He basked in her smile. “Can I bring you something to drink? Or eat? Before we set out?”She shook her head. “We are not sitting here so that you can do something for me. We are here so that I can do something for you. 14 of 16 people found the following review helpful. a summer throwaway read By Omar Siddique Another semi-stand-alone Shannara novel, the slow-paced Darkling Child picks up after The High Druid's Blade, following some of the surviving characters, most notably Arcannen and Paxon Leah.We get Brooks' tried-and-true formula of a coming-of-age magic-bearing scion of an ancient family, a dastardly irredeemable villain, bumbling good guys, and a love interest (or two). This formula usually makes for a pleasant (lightweight) read, but this volume just plods. Consistently, what Brooks writes really really well is action, magic, and the sight of otherworldy scenes. What he writes more weakly is conversation and character-development. Unfortunately, this book is heavy on the latter category. While it reads easily, the characters seem "off", and it's hard to care about any of them.(**lightweight spoilers ahead) We spend lots of time with Arcannen, but never get a sense of either malice or drive, and there's no discussion of his background. He seems extremely evil but mild-mannered, super-powerful but doesn't use his magic for anything mundane. Some authors could weave those elements together, but instead we get an Arcannen who seems nothing like the one in the previous book, and is more boring than deadly (except in one or two chapters). And there's the usual highly-placed Federation bad-guy, who is utterly one-dimensional. There's repeated (like 10-15) hints about something odd about the female love interest Larianna, but Brooks never goes anywhere with that idea. We briefly see several druids, but all but Alphenglow are barely developed.(**end of spoilers)Even the highlight of the book, the final battle scene, is shorter (and duller) than the opening battle scene. The character development and plot feel amateur.If I didn't know better, I'd say an editor put this volume together from Brooks' notes, rather than him writing it himself.I'm also not a fan of the "portable flash rips" as Shannara goes the way of sci-fi ray-guns.I've been reading Brooks since the early days, and while the Shannara world isn't as fresh or unique as it once was, I do still enjoy immersing myself in it. But unfortunately, Brooks has never really topped his first Shannara books, nor the excellent Word & Void series. Other than "Measure of the Magic", almost everything since the excellent "Voyage of the Jerle Shannara" series has been on the soft side, even leaning towards mundane. Darkling Child continues that unfortunate trend. Recommended for diehard fans, and for a "beach read", only.

A Druid Searches For A Young Magician With Deadly Powers By John Kwok "The Darkling Child" is described as a "stand alone" novel in the "Shannara" universe created by Terry Brooks, but it is actually book two in "The Defenders of Shannara" series. The only reason why "The Darkling Child" isn't getting sufficiently ample praise from me is because I think the writing and plot isn't nearly as memorable as those in Lev Grossman's "Magicians" novels or Robert Jackson Bennett's incredible "City of Stairs". However, for those who have been long-time fans of Terry Brooks' "Shannara" novels, "The Darkling Child" is yet another fine installment, devoted to Paxon Leah's quest for a young boy - the "darkling child" - who possesses deadly magical powers and his efforts in finding him before another, much more powerful, magician does. Long-time readers of the "Shannara" novels may be as intrigued as I was with the steampunkish elements in "The Darkling Child". For those who are devoted fans of Terry Brooks' fantasy novels, then "The Darkling Child" will be a most welcomed new chapter in his decades-long saga.

Munson Five years after facing off against the dark sorcerer Arcannen, Paxon Leah, sworn protector of the druids and now known as the High Druid's Blade, faces his greatest challenge.Aphenglow Elessedil, Ard Rhys of the druid order, has passed away. But Paxon has no time to mourn, for in a distant corner of the Four Lands, the magic of the wishsong has been detected. Now, Paxon and his druid companion Avelene have set off to find the source of the magic.The source turns out to be Reyn Frosch, a young traveling minstrel who plays music in taverns and inns. One evening, a stranger happens to hear Reyn's music. The stranger is none other but Arcannen. He promises Reyn that he will help him control the wishsong. Enlisting the help of Lariana, a young, attractive and persuasive girl, they set to the task of training Reyn.But the training is just a cover for a much larger scheme that will involve many others. And by now, Paxon and Avelene have discovered that Reyn is the source of the magic and are coming for him as well. What is about to ensue is a dramatic showdown where many will fight and die.I'm a big fan of Terry Brooks, and I've read all of his books. I especially liked this one. The story of the wishsong has appeared in many of his other books, and it serves as a good backdrop for this story. The character development is very good and the story slowly builds throughout until the final battle at the end. If you enjoy epic fantasy, then make sure to read this newest installment from the master of the genre. Highly recommended.
