What happens in Vegas… Will Tawera doesn’t do commitment, except on the rugby field. Moving to Las Vegas to become a kicker for the NFL would be a big change from New Zealand rugby, but then, he’s ready for a change. And when he’s asked to do a little modeling on the side? Thousands of dollars to hold a beautiful blonde while looking dark, dangerous, tattooed, and Maori? He could do that. Faith Goodwin doesn’t do dark, dangerous men. Especially not when they make her laugh, take her miniature golfing with four-year-olds, and are far too sexy and sweet for comfort. But when Will finds himself in hot water back in New Zealand, who’s he going to call? And who would be able to resist answering? Note: This book was previously published in Brenda Novak's SWEET TALK boxed set. This version contains an added chapter and added steam. If you prefer your books without steam...this may not be the book for you!

From the Author I originally wrote this book for Brenda Novak's limited-time SWEET TALK boxed set. This version contains an extra chapter that, ahem, wasn't allowed, and some other nice additional steam. (At least I thought it was nice.)This story--yep, another dream. I had a sexy dream (because romance authors are just that way) about two models for an erotic photo shoot who posed for a whole calendar and then...well, acted out the parts. But then I thought, wouldn't it be so much funnier and better if the heroine WASN'T the gorgeous model, if she was the person crawling around on the floor being the assistant? And what if the male model was actually a rugby player getting into trouble in the offseason? How would THAT go over back in New Zealand? And there you go...On a deeper level: This is a book about pretending, and about trusting somebody else enough to give up the pretense. It's so very hard to believe that we can be seen, and known, and loved despite our mistakes, despite our weaknesses. We can be so afraid that the "real us" isn't acceptable or lovable. There's a quote from Fred Rogers (Mr. Rogers) that I love. "Love isn't a state of perfect caring. It is an active noun like struggle. To love someone is to strive to accept that person exactly the way he or she is, right here and now." That's what this book is about.
From the Inside Flap Excerpt:"So who's the lucky girl chosen to be my victim?" Will asked now. He'd insisted on buying Faith's lunch, too, which had been nice of him. It was almost like a...date. Stop it. It's not a date."Oh, pardon," he said when she looked up in surprise, "my partner in almost-nearly consensual yet decidedly dirty acts of love.""Darn it," she said, fighting a smile. Did he have to be smart and funny, too? "Nobody's even written anything yet, and you've already got the plot. And it's Gretchen.""Ah. Gretchen." She couldn't tell if he was pleased or not. "I saw the list, remember? I'm guessing here that I'm meant to be the hard warrior. Got some dark tribal desires, maybe. I'm a wee bit...savage." He leaned closer and whispered the word, those liquid brown eyes widening a little, and she very nearly choked before he sat back and continued in a normal tone of voice. "Of course, I'm painfully jaded by my past experience with women, too.""You are?" She took another bite of salad and tried not to laugh."Yeh." He sighed pitifully. "They've hurt me, and now I take what I want--which is a bit nasty, by the way--and don't let them get close. So we start in on it, because she can't resist me. I tend to have that effect. I'm all broody, like I've lost every game, and yet she melts whenever she sees me, because apparently she likes blokes like that. Must be an odd girl.""You've lost every game," she repeated. "Huh? What game?""Sorry. Best metaphor I've got. I'm cranky, like, the way you are when you lose. But in a totally manly way. How am I doing so far?"Faith had lost the battle not to laugh. "Don't make me snort out my drink. You sound like you're ready to enter the contest yourself. You got a secret reading habit?""Just an ordinary amount of attention to the popular culture. One of my sisters was reading one of those books at Christmas. Pretty shocking, I thought, when I had a wee look. In fact, I'm a pretty ordinary fella, sad to say, in that department. Don't tell. I mostly just want to have fun, and to make sure she's having fun, too. I'll do my best to be Dark and Dangerous instead, though, especially if you keep me as narky as you did today."To make sure she's having fun, too. She'd bet. All she'd have to do was to see him naked. That would be fun all by itself. And to touch all...that. To look into those eyes while he was over her, moving slowly at first, because he wouldn't rush a woman. And then getting a little...decisive. A little commanding, even. She couldn't help it. Her mind went right there. She hadn't had sex in way too long.Focus. "Me?" she asked. "What did I do? And what's narky?""Annoyed.""I am never annoying. I am helpful. I am kind.""Smiling at me, being all encouraging? Soothing my fragile male ego?""That's my job, though.""Well, keep doing it. Because it's bloody annoying. That worked."

What happens in Vegas....doesn't stay in Vegas--another great Rugby Romance By Mom on the Run I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I was not compensated for my review, and I was not required to write a positive review. The opinion expressed here is my own.The Escape to New Zealand series by Rosalind James, featuring rugby player heroes from New Zealand's All Blacks, is one of my favorites and unlike a lot of continuing series that become very formulaic, each book brings a different twist with the stories told in a different way. This book begins in Las Vegas (those poor Kiwi girls, their All Blacks seem to be really attracted to North Americans!) with a fling that never really happens, returns to New Zealand to repair damage to the hero's reputation for something that DIDN'T stay in Vegas and features a book within a book.Series readers first meet the hero Will Tawera in a previous book, Just Not Mine. He's a handsome Maori rugby player who has just returned from a few years playing in Australia and signs with the Blues and hoping to get the call to play for the All Blacks. He's the typical hot stuff single athlete in that book, and I wasn't sure I was going to like him enough to read a whole book about him. I should have known better, though, because this author always makes her hero your new favorite. Will meets Faith during a trip to Vegas, does something that to most Americans seems like no big deal but once discovered in New Zealand becomes a really big deal. During his time in the US Will and Faith danced around their attraction, but knowing he was leaving Faith declined to do anything about it. When everything blows up, Faith goes to New Zealand to help Will try to make things seem right and ends up in the middle of Will's big Maori family pretending to be his girlfriend. Seeing Will in the middle of his family gives Faith (and the reader) the knowledge that Will isn't what he seems, that instead he is finally ready to be the man he's supposed to be in all areas of his life.Another great addition to this series and now I'm impatiently waiting for Kevin's story!

All these books now, and I still get a big kick out of all the back-and-forth teasing (verbal and otherwise) in these Rosalind James rugby romances. This one is about Will Tawera (Maori, ripped, tattooed, good guy, formidable as hell on the playing field), and Faith Goodwin (smart, little bit nerdy, feisty, self-reliant and able to give as good as she gets). They banter, prod, poke, chide, and tease each other like a latter-day Hepburn and Tracy. The attraction is undeniable, even for Faith, who’s trying her best to protect her stubborn heart. Unfortunately for her playing-it-safe plans, she finds herself cast by circumstances into the role of “pretend girlfriend” to the big New Zealand rugby star on his home ground. And if she’s running risks, poor Will is suddenly skating on thin ice with his family AND his team. Well, hey, what’s love about if not taking chances? In retrospect I think that was one of the reasons I liked the story so much – it’s about stepping out of your comfort zone and taking that big, scary leap of faith. Oh, and for those of you who read the story in its original part-of-a-collection printing, this standalone version has an extra chapter that amps up the whole steaminess quotient very nicely (If you don’t like hot, sexy scenes, stay faaarrrr away from this book, particularly the “Red Ribbon” chapter). Best chapter in the book for my money, though: The all-defenses-down emotional scene that plays out at, yes, at the airport. That’s the three-cherries payout, to use a Vegas metaphor. Sum-up: Quick read. Full marks for wit, lust, and expert extraction of tears. (Oh, and the book-within-a-book is pretty good too. I’m guessing this was a lot of fun to write.)

It wasn't anywhere near as good as her previous New Zealand books. i've read all the other books in the series multiple times but had to force myself to finish this one. There was no true character development so i never cared for either of the main characters and I didnt find the choices and decisions made by them to be believable or sympathetic. I also didnt care for all the excerps of Faith's novel: it really broke up the actual story and could be confusing since we didn't have the whole story . bottom line: really wish i had read the more critical reviews before buying this one.
