An eye for an eye… My name is Archer Black, and I have a confession. For as long as I can remember, my life has revolved around getting revenge against Senator Thomas Wharton. It was supposed to be easy. Uncover his secrets. End his political career. Ruin his Presidential campaign. Use his stepdaughter, Langley Mayer, to do it. She’s also my stepsister, but she doesn’t know that. Nobody does… But nothing is as easy as it seems. When my high-stakes plan for revenge takes a deadly turn, I’m the only person standing between Langley and the people who want her dead. Time is running out, and I need to decide what I need more. Love or revenge.

It has intrigue, revenge, passion and love.Initially, Archer comes across as ruthless, unforgiving and determinedly vengeful. He’s risen above his trailer-park, poverty-stricken childhood to become a powerful and rich businessman. The only people he truly cares about are his brothers, Knox and Gunnar. He plans to use Langley to exact revenge on his amoral and corrupt biological father, Senator Wharton, who also happens to be Langley’s stepfather.Langley is recovering from a broken relationship with Brandon, a man she trusted, who works for her father. She’s still reeling from a shocking discovery about her stepfather and Brandon’s complicity. She has a troubled relationship with her mother and her real father was a famous actor, who died from a drug overdose. She only has one true friend, Winnie. She plays the political game well but tries to lead her own life. From the moment Archer meets Langley in person, he realises immediately that he hadn’t counted on their abundant chemistry, and her effect on him, to cloud his thinking and endanger his plans to use her to bring his father down. He’s pretty rattled by his obsessive attraction to her and nearly blows his chances of getting close to her. Luckily for him, Langley is equally attracted to him and can’t help her compulsion to spend time with him. When Langley decides to blow the lid on her stepfather’s past activities, Archer promises to help her. All the while, he still hasn’t disclosed who he really is. As the story unfolds, threats and danger abound, and their new-found love and passion will be tested, once truths are revealed.I loved this story and can’t wait for more in this series!

By FromTheSouth Having enjoyed Lisa Cardiff’s Vargas Cartel series, I was thrilled to receive an ARC via NetGalley of Sins of My Father (Book 1, Black Brothers series) in exchange for an honest, unbiased review. As much as I like this author’s writing style, I regretfully have to give this book just an average rating. The writing flowed with an interesting storyline filled with politics, intrigue, and revenge, but something was missing. Looking back, I think it is because at times I felt I was told more than felt a romantic connection between the leading couple, despite the steamy scenes. Langley Mayer, the heroine, fell too quickly and conveniently for the hero, Archer Black, who was not particularly likeable. It is never a good thing when you find yourself liking the secondary characters more than the hero. Knox, Archer’s brother, was definitely more appealing to this reviewer. Even though he played a small role in this book, he definitely caught this reviewer’s attention. The story itself seemed to move at a snail’s pace until about 80% into it (the showdown with Senator Wharton), which was very well done. Ending with Langley’s rather anti-climatic reunion/acceptance of Archer’s apology. Honestly, it seemed Archer didn’t have to work for her forgiveness. Certainly not nearly enough. Once again, the heroine too quickly, conveniently gave in.Overall, it was an entertaining read with a cast of believable characters but needed more of a heart-felt romantic aspect. I am really looking forward to Knox’s story, which hopefully will be book #2. He certainly came across as a man of mystery with many talents. Yes, I know. I’m talking about him again. Can’t seem to help myself…(sigh). I am quite confident Ms. Cardiff will do an amazing job writing it, because there is obviously a lot of manliness there to work with...(longer, deeper sigh).Title: Sins of My Father, Series: Black Brothers (Book #1), Pages: 260, Author: Lisa Cardiff, stand-alone, HEA, no cliffhanger, no cheating(This review is based on ARC copy generously provided by the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest, unbiased opinion.)

When you first meet him he isn't especially likable. The rags part of his rags to riches story has rendered him emotionally damaged and running on fantasies of revenge. The only reason he's initially interested in Langley is because his stepsister represents a means to an end, the perfect way to deliver payback on his father. His father happens to be her stepfather, though she's unaware of that little tidbit. As for Langley she's had a rough go over the years. Brandon shattered both her heart and her trust, there's no love lost between her and her Senator stepdad, and her relationship with her mother is not a good one. If it weren't for Winnie she'd probably have flung herself off a tall building by now. The first encounter between her and Archer isn't exactly encouraging but like it or not, neither one can deny the undercurrent of sexual attraction between them. The chemistry between them is undeniably magnetic, and it only intensifies as the story unfolds. I didn't expect to get as wrapped up in this as I did, but I found myself hooked hard within the first chapter. The various character relationships drive the drama in this exciting story of politics, payback, and romance. Can't wait to read the next book in the series!
