Some of the questions left hanging at the end of the first book are answered, but not all of them, and new questions are raised. Be forewarned that there are plots within plots here, and the reader needs to be prepared for the unexpected. Thankfully, there are no "deus ex machine" contrivances, and Habershaw's story unfolds logically. Keep an eye out for clues.For me, two elements stand out in this installment--action and character. Oh boy, is there action. As in the first book, the story propels the reader along at a fast pace. As a reader, I can be easily bored, but that doesn't happen here.The author can devote more time to character development in this sequel. The developments are satisfying and subtle--nothing corny or trite. The emerging relationships are intriguing and may hold some surprises in store.So--world building, wit, action, story and plot, pace, character. What more can a reader want? I'm looking forward to the next one; I want to see how the characters' stories play out.

A fast paced and thrilling conclusion to a wonderful part 1. The characters are well developed, their relationships have subtlety, and their dialogue is both spot on and well written. Highly recommended to any who like Fantasy or who just like a good adventure.

Hool is pretty cool too. And Tyvian starts to think of others at last. I'll miss his selfishness somewhat but I'm very interested to see what he's capable of.
