By Orthodox Geek There is something ironically appropriate in a crossover between Robotech and Voltron. Both franchises are like alternative-universe versions of their respective anime progenitors, so mixing the two in a decidedly American comic book format feels like the punchline to a long, and admittedly entertaining, joke. That the comic series takes itself deadly-serious puts an exclamation point in place.Of course, neither franchise is a stranger to the comic-book treatment. Both Robotech and Voltron have many a page dedicated to their respective stories, but they are both so different, it was hard for me to imagine how a crossover would work. The decidedly "real-robot" trappings of Robotech seem at odds with the mystical "super-robot" themes of Voltron. In fact, this comic examines that disparity, but not deeply enough for my taste. If I have any complaint about this story, it's that it doesn't take enough liberty with either franchise. Just when the different possibilities develop the potential to get really wild, the show is over, and everything is "back to normal", so to speak. Which begs the question, what was the point? It's not all bad - The art is pleasing, and there are a few neat ideas that play off the crossover nature of the project, but in general, it felt like a missed opportunity. Perhaps in trying to please both camps, Robotech/Voltron decided to avoid any real risks, and in so doing it avoided any real victories as well. Fun enough for the fandom, but pedestrian enough to stymie any strong endorsement.
