By Poison_SHADOW I only know the world of The Witcher from the fantastic video games which based on characters from a series of Polish novels. For that reason, I was afraid that I might pick up this comic and find myself lost in an unfamiliar continuity which skews more towards the novels I've never read than the games. Thankfully this isn't the case. The story follows Geralt of Rivia at an undisclosed time in a seemingly unknown period of his life. He's riding on horseback and comes across an aging hunter alone in the wilderness, and the two men quickly strike up conversation around a campfire while drinking wine. It's a nice, quiet start but not once did I find myself getting bored, particularly once the hunter shares a secret about his troubled wife who is never far from his sight. I don't read much other than the typical comic book superheroics, so this first issue was a great change of pace for me. We are slowly introduced to the world of the supernatural beginning with a tale told by the hunter, and by the end of this issue we are treated to a tense situation without getting beat over the head with action-packed splash pages. The writing is top-notch and the artwork is great, and suitably understated when it needs to be. This is likely the beginning a pretty dark series and the artwork and coloring matches this perfectly. All in all this is a great start for this series, and I feel as though someone without any previous knowledge at all of The Witcher could easily get into it and find a lot to like.
