By Edward L Zimmerman As a lover of epic fantasy, I’ve been smitten with the adventures of Conan for over four decades now. While I’d admit I’ve only dabbled in reading some of Robert E. Howard’s original works off and on, I have found almost all comic interpretations of what I’ve had the good fortune to explore to be quite entertaining. As for Red Sonja? I’ve really only discovered her in the last decade or so, but – having scarfed up a good amount of what I’ve found – I think she’s an equally interesting if not palpably more fetching character worth getting to know.Bringing these two heroes together under a single title for those of us willing to spend the time? That’s pure genius, and methinks others will reach the same conclusion if CONAN/RED SONJA #1 is any indication.(NOTE: The following review will contain minor spoilers necessary solely for the discussion of plot and/or characters. If you’re the type of reader who prefers a review entirely spoiler-free, then I’d encourage you to skip down to the last three paragraphs for my final assessment. If, however, you’re accepting of a few modest hints at ‘things to come,’ then read on …)From Dark Horse’s website: “In a story spanning multiple eras in the lives of these classic characters, Conan and Red Sonja become comrades to take down a sorcerer-priest hell bent on creating a dark new age in Hyborian warfare!”Any reader even cursorily familiar with either of these properties would do well to hit the nearest comic book retailer and pick up a copy of CONAN/RED SONJA #1. This new tale from the minds of Gail Simone and Jim Zub touches on all of the right artistic styling to make it a solid addition to anyone’s library, and I say this admittedly by not being the biggest fan of Simone’s work in the world of graphic storytelling. So far as I’ve been concerned, she’s either been hit or miss – for example, I’ve loved much of her work on the current Red Sonja reboot, but I’ve struggled finding much merit and much less diversion in her Lara Croft reboot. Perhaps this is due to an epiphany of mine: could it be that Simone fares better in the world of pure epic fantasy than she does in crafting tales of modern adventure?I offer that up as only speculation at this point. Clearly, I haven’t read enough of her across a variety of titles to say that definitively; in fact, those are only the two titles I think I’ve explored her work. (Yes, I’m aware she’s put in time on Wonder Woman, as well; I just haven’t bought an issue of WW in years.)The book begins with a vignette that looks to set up events for the broader tale that’s appears likely to unfold in the promised 4-issue series; and then the action quickly segues the story-within-a-story that brings these two warriors together. As one might expect, it’s a tale founded on their cunning as thieves; finding themselves in pursuit of the same object, why isn’t it only natural that they join forces? Before all is said and done, however, they’ll come to grips with the fact that they may have been duped … or have they?Clearly, this is only the first chapter, introducing them to a particular set of circumstances that’ll unfold as time (and pages) permit.As for the rest? Dan Panosian’s artwork certainly is in keeping with what I’ve seen on the Conan and Red Sonja titles respectively, giving the book a nice sense of inclusive continuity to each world.CONAN/RED SONJA #1 – THE AGE OF INNOCENCE (Part 1 of 4) is published by Dark Horse Comics. The script is written by Gail Simone & Jim Zub; the art is drawn by Dan Panosian; the colors are provided by Dave Stewart; and the letters have been inked by Richard Starkings & Comicraft. (Cover art for this issue was also served by Panosian.) The issue comes with the cover price of $3.99, and that’s still one of the best bargains in all of the shelves.HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION POSSIBLE. I always celebrate first issues when they’re well done, and CONAN/RED SONJA #1 is brilliantly crafted. In fact, it’s so well done that – unlike many other ‘firsts’ I’ve read throughout the years – it could entirely exist as a stand-alone adventure … with the obvious caveat that not all questions raised here are answered. Gail Simone & Jim Zub’s tale moves at just the right pace with a forgettable bet of creative coincidence required to find our two heroes in the (exact) right place at the (exact) right time.In the interests of fairness, I’m pleased to disclose that the fine folks at Dark Horse Comics provided me with a digital reading copy of CONAN/RED SONJA #1 by request for the expressed purposes of completing this review; and their contribution to me in no way, shape, or form influenced my opinion of it.
