I recently read Maugham's 'Of Human Bondage' a classic written nearly a century ago. It's a very long novel peppered with the kind of words you may have to look up, even when you have a vague idea what they mean.I was prepared to push my way through my reading group's selection, but instead I found myself sneaking back to my kindle, reading in the dark, middle of the night--determined to find out what happens to Philip. And when it was over, I felt a bit lost. The story begins when Philip is eight and his mother dies, making him an orphan. He is sent to live with his childless uncle, an older clergyman, and his aunt. With this inauspicious beginning, the story proceeds leisurely, with numerous asides to discuss art, philosophy, the nature of love, even questioning of the existence of free will. It's the polar opposite of the modern stripped-down-to essentials novel, so much so it is shocking. If you can indulge your reading habit for a long book, you'll be rewarded with a bonanza of thought-provoking ideas wrapped in a coming-of-age story, chuck-full of memorable characters.

By Rosa Lee The emotions and insights throughout this work are simple yet powerful, disturbing yet deeply humane. The reader lives Philip's experience and recognizes threads of every man's intricate tapestry of life.
