Everything about it sounded interesting, including the description on the back cover. Alas, this book was not for me.The first 80 pages or so are actually exciting. In the future, China attacks America. The build up to the attack is interesting. The technology behind the attack is also interesting. Some of the description involving the technology reminded me of Tom Clancy because he also gave detailed descriptions of objects of war. For example, the authors of this book give the back story to the USS Zumwalt, including why and how it was built (it becomes part of the ghost fleet). All of that was very interesting.Then something happen. The story stopped moving forward. Once China attacks, everything moves at a snail’s pace. For me, the small, choppy sections (which average about 2 pages) that jump all over the place did not work. Characters come and go. And there was no sense of urgency from anyone. If China attacked, I would think there would be more orders shouted, more people racing to gather arms, and more counter-attack. Instead, the authors jump over different parts of the Hawaiian Islands, different parts of China, and other locations. None of it seemed cohesive. And as I kept reading, I became more bored. The only interesting parts over the next 100 pages was the USS Zumwalt and its crew, and even some of those scenes were slow.I feel the book has tons of potential. I think these new authors tried to do too much with a complicated plot. I did not enjoy the cuts and jumping from one place to another. I rarely got to understand the characters. War should be a means for excitement and tension in a story, but I did not get that sense throughout most of the book. However, the technology discussed in the story interested me, and at least I feel motivated to learn more about the gears of war. As for this book, I did not enjoy it and would not recommend it.

Unfortunately, overhyped disappointment By Chris I have to admit to being rather disappointed with Ghost Fleet.There's a substantial void in the fiction market for near future, realistic military techno thrillers ever since Tom Clancy died(and eve before when we "phoned in" his last few novels).The hype surrounding Ghost Fleet has been enormous pushing the author team as the "New Clancy" and breaking new ground in near future warfighting.Sadly it was overhyped.I found the book to be fairly conventional and didn't really break new conceptual ground.I was also disappointed that the book brushed over the political/economic climate bar the odd comment which took away from the atmosphere of the book where I perceived this war being fought in a near vacuum.Maybe if the book at not been overhyped I would have enjoyed it more, but I feel let down and disappointed.The book's worth reading if you don't fall for all the well publicized "new Clancy" reviews and manage to acquire a copy at a deep discount.I don't see much value in this book being placed on military service/unit reading lists.
35 of 39 people found the following review helpful. Can't believe I finished this book! It was horrible. By Navy Brat This is one of my favorite genres. I was really looking forward to enjoying this story about a realistic scenario. I also happen to agree with what I believe to be the authors' perspective regarding the misguided approach to the development and acquisition of recent weapons systems and platforms (e.g., any of them over the last 10-15 years, culminating in the CF of the F-35 A-C). However, whoever misled these guys into thinking that they could write a book in an effort to illustrate a point of view did them and the reading public a gross disservice. I liked that women had strong, intelligent roles and everything about the political perspectives, but the dialogues were wooden, the characterizations were paper thin, the chapters were chopped off, and, frankly, it was the worst book I have ever finished. Because of my sympathies, I was reluctant to post this review, but did so because I am annoyed by being "suckered" into buying a book that should never have been published.
