About the Author Born in New York City on October 3, 1924, Harvey Kurtzman began displaying his prodigious artistic talents nearly as soon as he could sit up and hold a pencil. He joined the staff of Timely (later to become Marvel) in 1945 and filled their titles with humor and gag features. In 1949 Kurtzman moved to E.C. Publications, where he took over writing and editing FRONTLINE COMBAT and TWO-FISTED TALES, bringing to them a level of accuracy and realism that was unprecedented in the medium. Soon after that, Kurtzman and Gaines agreed to start a brand-new satirical title under Kurtzman's direction, and MAD was born.Kurtzman stayed with MAD until 1956, five issues into its magazine incarnation, editing every issue and writing almost all of them. In 1962, Kurtzman and his longtime MAD collaborator Will Elder created the satirical comic strip Little Annie Fanny, which ran in Playboy for the next 20 years and won renown as one of the most lavishly produced strips in the medium's history. Kurtzman also taught cartoon storytelling at the School of Visual Arts in New York where he helped to inspire a new generation of comics artists. He died on February 21, 1993.

13 of 14 people found the following review helpful. Be Warned! By MICHAEL A. SKINNER Be Warned! The only thing "Hard cover" is the slipcase. The books are softcover! They are also a little under sized. Contents of corse are always 5 star from the team of artists who helped put MAD on the map. The rating is 4 because of the mis-information.hopefully it will get corrected so others get surprised as I did.

Short of spending a small fortune, this is the best way to read the originals.There are a few caveats though. The size has been reduced from the Golden Age size, (half tabloid) to a smaller size more in line with modern graphic novels. Because EC didn't use zip-a-tones (or whatever they were called back then) very much, there's no DPI patterns visible that you normally see when comic artwork is reduced.If you want a larger size with covers and all content, check out the DC Archives 4 volume set "The MAD Archives"This set does leave out a bit, like John Severin, Russ Heath, and full Kurtzman covers I would love to see a fourth volume with everything that was left out of this set.This will make a wonderful addition to anyone's EC and or MAD collection.
1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. MAD: The good and the bad By kip It is great to finally have the entire collection of MAD works by these three fantastic artists. This is fabulous stuff. However, like other reviewers I do wish the books were a little larger. And, while I knew when I bought the set that the contents were mostly in color, I am a little disappointed that the color often hides a lot of the wonderful artwork, especially the background work. I'd love to see this same set printed entirely in black and white, where one could really drool over the fantastic pen and brush work of these legendary cartoonists. Still, for fans of their work, this is a treasure and a great buy.
