2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Intriguing legal thriller with unique main character By CJ-MO “Chilling Effect” is the second in a new series by author Melissa F. Miller. I read (and enjoyed) the series debut, but it’s not necessary to do so before reading this excellent follow-up novel. As in the first book, Aroostine’s Native American background and reliance on her spirit guide for wise advice put a new twist on the typical legal thriller.Aroostine is supposed to be relaxing on a romantic vacation with her husband, Joe, but she can’t resist getting involved in a case when her boss in Washington, DC calls for a favor. What looks like a routine embezzlement case at a Native American casino turns into a dangerous dance with a killer. Aroostine and Joe work together to tackle this case and once again, Aroostine uses her Native American background to help in solving the case.I really enjoyed this book and would love to read additional installments in this series. Aroostine is a strong, independent woman and makes a great main character. She is brave, caring, and compassionate and does what she thinks is right, usually ignoring the consequences. Sometimes her husband Joe seems selfish to me, but he really grows personally and in his support of this wife in this book. The case is intriguing and will keep you guessing at who the killer really is. I enjoyed the fast pace and the author’s writing style. I would recommend the book for fans of Thomas Perry or James Doss.I received this book from NetGalley through the courtesy of Thomas & Mercer. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great fast-paced murder mystery thriller By iiiireader “Chilling Effect” is the second book in the new Aroostine Higgins series by Melissa F. Miller. The character seems to have been introduced in a previous series by the author but I have yet to read that series. I did read the first book in this series, “Critical Vulnerability”. While I enjoyed the first book and I believe that it enhanced my reading of this book, I don't think it is necessary to read the books in order to enjoy this story. There is enough background information given in this book to have it make sense and while there is information about the first book, I don't consider the information to be a “spoiler” problem.In this story, Aroostine and her husband Joe are on vacation in Oregon. The purpose of the trip is to help mend some of the breaches in their marriage that occurred during the previous book. The point of the trip is to put aside work and simply be with one another. Unfortunately, work comes to find Aroostine regardless of her good intentions.There are crimes committed on a local reservation and Aroostine, at the behest of her old boss in Washington DC, finds herself neck deep in trouble trying to figure out what has been going on.Roo (as her husband calls her), continues her journey in discovering her spiritual roots in her Native American heritage. She also calls upon the teachings her grandfather taught her before he passed away. It becomes apparent that she has put this all behind her early in life probably due to the grief she felt at losing her grandfather.She and her husband work together to solve the crimes and to figure out where their lives will go from this point.Once again, I really enjoyed the storytelling ability of Ms. Miller. The character is one that speaks to me both as a woman and a person of diverse heritage and teachings. It is always a pleasure to read a character and see little bits of yourself or a loved one in that person. That the author has made the character real for me is an added bonus in reading this fast-paced murder mystery.The legal part of the book is present but it is not enough for me to consider it a legal thriller – which is also true of the previous book in the series. I read murder mysteries, thrillers, and the occasional legal thriller, so whatever the official genre, this book is certainly one that I would chose to read in any case. I recommend it to anyone who also likes these genres.I received a copy of this book from the publisher, Thomas & Mercer, via Netgalley in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.

Aroostine Higgins is a Native American. After her grandfather’s death she was raised in a predominately white area and then went on to become a prominent Assistant U.S. District attorney. Known as Roo, her vacation is cut short when her former boss calls and asks her to speak with an informant about illegal activity in a Native American Casino. Roo isn’t sure, but her former boss thinks she is the perfect person to find out what is going on because of her Native American Heritage – something she doesn’t identify with. She learns more about this part of herself as she tries to figure out what is going on. Roo also has to deal with the United States Federal Law vs Tribal Law, something she learns as she goes.This is an exciting story with a unique twist. I enjoyed Roo’s character and how she had to dig deep within herself to find her roots and do her job in a fair and just way. As the second book in a series, I did not find Chilling Effect to be difficult to understand and think it works as a stand-alone. The writing, while simplistic, tells a wonderful tale and is very descriptive in capturing Roo’s inner struggle. I am going to have to go back and read the first book in the series just to spend more time with this captivating character.*A copy of this book was provided for review.
