Flynn's Gold told how two widowers, Junior and Earl, moved from the North Carolina Mountains to the Florida Keys in search of a treasure in gold and silver coins. Junior’s deceased Uncle who was a rumrunner during prohibition had hidden the treasure. The book follows their search for the treasure and introduces some of the interesting characters that call Ayers Key home. Among their new friends are retired drug smugglers, a fist fighting bar maid, an ex-con, a gun loving camouflage wearing mute woman, a high dollar escort, a weed smoking seascape painter, and a Rottweiler named Sugar Cookie. And it being set in the Keys there are fishing guides, boats, tarpon, sharks, and a waterside tiki hut bar where the central characters hang out. In Twenty Two Miles to Key West Junior and Earl have comfortably settled into life on Ayers Key. The ever-curious Earl is determined to find out what the source is of the mysterious lights that he sees at night in Lost Man Harbor, and he speculates about the purpose of the unmarked black helicopters that he sees. Junior and Earl join forces with one of their friends in the search for the long lost wreck site of a pirate's sloop. The search for the shipwreck leads to a hunt for buried treasure and Earl learns that pirates still walk among us today. All their friends from Flynn's Gold are back and they still spend a lot of time at Busted Rick's bar, The Unloading Zone. It's everyday life on Ayers Key and there are parties, a Tarpon fishing contest, a poker game, a boat race around Lost Man Harbor at night, and somebody gets punched in the face, really hard.

Decent story, but obviously no editing or proofreading done prior to publishing By mysterylover I enjoy reading stories about Florida, and the Keys in particular. The story and the character development were decent, and I did feel that the author did a good job of helping me visualize the places that Earl, Junior, and the others lived and/or visited. However, my biggest complaint with this book is the very poor editing/proofreading that went into the book. The author seems unsure of when and how to use quotation marks, and how to punctuate the sentences around them, and often makes errors involving capitalization, punctuation, and sentence structure. One of the most glaring and frustrating errors that was repeated throughout the book was the inconsistency in capitalizing the name of the dog in the story.Sometimes she was Sugar Cookie and just as often, she was Sugar cookie. That's basic elementary school punctuation- why wouldn't an author want to clean up his/her manuscript before publishing it?I'd be interested to see what the main characters do in another story, but if that one is as sloppy as this one, I won't try a third book by this author.
1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Entertaining Sequel By Annie 22 Miles to Key West is an entertaining continuation of the exploits of Junior & Earl, first introduced in Flynn's Gold. Along with their delightful friends and some new characters, they become involved in a series of adventures woven together with surprising twists and turns. Double the enjoyment of getting to know all these Key West characters by reading Flynn's Gold if you haven't already read it. Looking forward to more books from Bill North.

The 22 miles go nowhere By S I P The comedian Spike Milligan once wrote in one of his books that like the main character's legs, the plot did not develop much. That sums up how I feel about this book. The storyline had great potential to be very exciting. However, for me any excitement was taken away by the padding concerning Junior said ".....", Earl stated "......." and Rembrandt commented "......". The books suffers from too much commentary and too many introductions to the actors. Bill North is a good author, but this one lets the side down.
