Deanna introduces a broad arc of adoption issues, not only the positives but also some of the challenges as well. She makes an effort to be realistic and honest and to avoid sugarcoating the adoption experience. For anyone considering adoption, this book offers a great first look.I wish that she had used the term "expectant" mom instead of "birth" mom when referring to a woman contemplating placing her child for adoption. (One does not become a birth mother until after the baby is born.) Language is important in setting a respectful stage for all who are involved in an adoption. I also wish Deanna had made a stronger plea for thorough pre-adoption education for prospective parents and a more thorough discussion of the benefits of open adoption as well as the pitfalls (shame, secrecy, etc. that accompany closed adoptions. While openness does not alleviate all of the pain/grief/loss issues, it does bring it into the open where parent and child can deal with it together. Includes suggested resources!---Gayle H.
