Veteran mercenary Everett Black is not in the habit of turning down good money. Then again, no one has ever offered him a job to set off into the Elition Wilderness, a vast land where magic reigns and electronics die. As secretive as they are powerful, the Elitions would kill him if they caught him there. He has little reason to risk the Elitions’ wrath just to rescue two teenage princes—especially not the heirs to the Selpe Empire, which destroyed the city he called home and is now hunting down every last survivor. But if he cannot save them, then the empire’s most demented aristocrats will seize power, and things will get a whole lot worse for him. And to succeed, Everett has to put his trust in three dubious allies: Cameron, a runaway Elition teenager; Isis, a charming young guide with a guarded secret; and Jason, an assassin with a notorious reputation for killing Selpes. Wilderness is the second book in the Sorcery and Science fantasy adventure series.

There is global political intrigue that connects the stories but it's very in the background to what's happening to the main characters.Everett is the one character from the first book...who is a kind of secondary character to Isis & Jason in this novel. The through-themes of these 2 books seem to be a merry band of misfits who shouldn't fit together realize they make a good team while rescuing princes-in-distress.There is fun banter as the gang gets comfortable with each other. The good guys have a lot of luck on their side when it comes to big fight scenes. They are traveling together for months through the desert on the way to rescuing the princes, but because there are so many secrets and so much distrust there aren't a lot of great moments of getting to know people better. Since Everett is the one person from book 1 I wanted to feel a connection to him, but he seemed to bounce back and be extra jovial & ready for a Peter Pan adventure with Cameron after the genocide of his people at the end of book 1.I liked the book, hence 4 stars, but it feels like the characters "reboot" at the beginning of the next book, so the reader can jump in on any book and enjoy an adventure, but it's not much to invest in for a series because we don't get to watch characters & relationships evolve.

An exciting adventure through a rich fantasy realm.Wilderness expands nicely on the fantasy world introduced in the first book. Most of the story takes place in an area called the "Wilderness" which is a land of magic where technology doesn't work. Very cool idea. The pace was fast, though maybe not as fast as the first book, but there is more world-building and it read well.Like the first book, the second book has great writing. The descriptions are vivid, the story is interesting, and the characters are well-developed. I really liked the romantic tension between Isis and the assassin Jason. It's hard to go wrong with an assassin in fantasy, especially one with really strong magic. The book was much longer than the first. It didn't include short stories at the end like book one. There's a 2.5 book with a bunch of stories that I'm looking forward to reading and learning more about the characters.

Neely I can't decide if I loved the all the detail or if it was a bit too much and distracted me from the story, but the plot was great. I can't tell you the one thing that bugged me without a spoiler, but it was a minor thing anyways. I'd read this again! Looking forward to the rest of the series.
