It's not just Beacon 23--although the four short stories that make up Beacon 23 are Howey at the top of his game--but all of Howey's stories. It blows my mind how he can fully flesh out characters, settings, WORLDS in just a handful of pages. The man is truly a master of the format.The old saying is "run...don't walk" to get something, but in today's digital age, I'd say instead "click...don't wait" and consume Howey's works. You won't be disappointed. "The Box", "The Plagiarist", "Glitch", "The Walk Up Nameless Ridge", "Second Season", "Promises of London" and these Beacon 23 stories are all well worth the 99 cents you'll put down for them.

As with his other short stories, there is so much detail packed into so few words. Imagine modern day lighthouses as beacons in space, complete with the utter loneliness of the men and women who occupy them. What happens if one of these beacons inexplicably stops working and risks the lives of thousands? Or, if you come to realize what's happened, can you handle the repercussions? Well done, Hugh. Can't wait to see what's next!
