When Craig Robertson's religious fanatic father disappears, Craig is forced to return to the home he left behind after an underage affair in order to look for answers. He takes with him his new lover, private investigator Paul Maloney, who is more than willing to help solve the mystery. The search soon becomes an investigation into Craig's past, and, because of distressing gaps in his memory, he's terrified of the truths he might find. As Craig's obsession with uncovering clues grows, his fragile relationship with Paul begins to disintegrate. Haunted and stalked, Craig has to face down the horror of his memories if he wants to have any hope of a future at all. The Bones of Summer was awarded third place in the inaugural 2009 Rainbow Mystery Fiction Awards. Reviews: "All I can do is recommend that you read The Bones of Summer. Actually, this goes beyond recommendation to a plea - if you like mystery; if you like character driven books; if you like reading compulsively, unable to part with the story for even a short time; then you must read this book.” [From a 5+ star review at Jessewave Reviews] “The Bones of Summer by Anne Brooke is an exceptionally well written and thrilling mystery novel. This novel grabbed a hold of me almost immediately and would not let go. I found myself reading until the early morning hours. The last few chapters are especially chilling and will stay with me for a long time.” [From a 4.5 star review at Romance Junkies Reviews] "Well, Anne Brooke has done it to me again. I read the first book in the series (Maloney's Law) where Paul Maloney, a broken man, was the main character. At the end of the book, he met Craig Robertson and even though they didn't end up together, they established a connection. This is Craig's story. And what a story it is." Dark and angsty By Ann Somerville Towards the end of Maloney's Law, Paul Maloney, at the lowest of low points and newly discharged from hospital, encounters a young man called Craig and they engage in a brief, intimate moment that stands out in the novel as one of the few times that Paul is close to real happiness."The Bones of Summer" is Craig's story, at the point where his life and Paul's intersects once more. Seeking no more than a trouble-free, pleasant sexual interlude with a man who kisses amazingly well, his reunion with Paul coincides with a family friend alerting him to his father having gone missing. But in looking for his parent, Craig discovers the mysteries about his past are far murkier, and far more dangerous than he could have imagined.Ostensibly Craig's story, this novel is also as much about Paul Maloney. Paul's moved on a little past the sorrow and grief, but he's still very damaged and raw. The irony is that despite that, he's not anything like as damaged as Craig, and he has to be the mature adviser as Craig struggles to untangle his history and confront some very distressing memories. So if you read this without reading Maloney's Law, you'll enjoy it, but not as much as someone who knows who Paul Maloney is. I'm not convinced that Ms Brooke has made Paul's inner anguish entirely clear without a reading of the first novel, just as Paul is given to making statements about Craig for which we are given very little supporting evidence - or shown Paul's train of thought. That's probably my biggest gripe with the novel, and over all, it's not a big issue. The story's told in third person past tense, which worked slightly better for me than the first person present of the first novel. Brooke's writing is clean and easy to read, and the plot straightforward, albeit with a slightly predictable ending. It reads very much like a double episode of a superior BBC crime programme, with similar dark themes and somewhat overblown story, but is highly enjoyable for all that. Craig isn't as fascinating to me as Paul, but that's because I fell for Paul first, I suspect. In his own right, he's a well-drawn character with a credibly horrific past of abuse and a first love gone terribly wrong. The relationship between the two young men, both so scarred and battered, is also believable, and far from easy.As a sequel, I heartily recommend this, though it's not a light read, or a particularly cheerful one - anyone looking for a romantic Happily Ever After will have to settle for something much less certain, though still very welcome. Ms Brooke stares unflinchingly at the dark underbelly of every day existence, and makes it uncomfortably real.

The Bones of Summer By Melissa Model Craig Robertson is very surprised to get a call one night from Paul Maloney, a guy he hooked up with at a club almost two months earlier. They meet up again, and things go very well. Then Craig gets the news that his estranged father is missing, and things begin to spiral out of control. The Bones of Summer is a hard book to describe. Before I even try to do so, my preface to the review: I strongly recommend reading Maloney's Law before The Bones of Summer. While it isn't absolutely necessary, Maloney's Law gives the setup for The Bones of Summer, gives a detailed portrayal of Paul (who is the main character in that one), and is just a really good book. That said, The Bones of Summer stands on its own as a romance and more so as a mystery. Craig is a conflicted character. He had a difficult childhood with a fundamentalist father. After leaving home, he changed his name and tried to forget his past. Unfortunately, the secrets of his past won't stay hidden, even though he's forced many of them from his own mind. Paul is also conflicted. He's had a great deal of sorrow and betrayal in his past. His job as a private investigator makes him the perfect person to help Craig look into his past, but their budding romance complicates things. Secondary characters, including Craig's roommates, his father, and a former neighbor, are well-drawn. The mystery is sufficiently twisty and interesting, especially since a great deal of it is in Craig's mind. The Bones of Summer isn't perfect by any means. The villain is a bit over-the-top, and parts near the end are pretty horrifying (sensitive readers beware). The ending is hopeful, but not as sweet as my romantic side wanted. I also would have preferred some from Paul's point of view as well, although I know why Anne Brooke chose to write in one point of view. Despite those cautions, The Bones of Summer drew me in and kept me clicking the page turn button on my ereader throughout. Little touches of humor and bittersweet emotion, likeable characters, and an interesting mystery make The Bones of Summer well worth a read.CassieReviewed for Joyfully Reviewed

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I would recommend this book for its uniqueness By Amazon Customer Honestly , a 3.5 star review. This story combines mystery, intrigue with mm romance- a unique combination. The story, while enjoyable, dragged in spots and the secondary characters were not well developed or interesting. The main characters, Craig and Paul were likeable with deep back stories which were slowly revealed throughout the story. I would recommend this book for its uniqueness.

It's not a metaphor for life after marriage, a pet story, or instructions for better living through motherhood. It's a truth-telling of the highest order. Kim McLarin speaks the truth. And writes it here. With courage and beauty. Unvarnished, seemingly conjured from the deep- she inhabits spaces we all possess but are reluctant to share-at least not without a modicum of spin.If a memoir is a look into the particular that glimpses the universal, than this book is memoir maximus. Compelling (as in replete with searing pain, magnetic wit, and a rare brilliance throughout)- its the kind of book that reminds us of the messy and beautiful world that we inhabit. Not neat, always honest(her assessment of it, anyway). And pretty funny.Oh,and her dog... seems very loyal and sweet.

Brown Of all the things I love about Kim McLarin's writing, and there's a lot to love (well-crafted, humorous, relevant), the thing I most love is the honesty. Aren't you just a little bit relieved to hear someone else say, out loud, that they're feeling less than wonderful? To take off the cheery facade and say, "I'm f&$%#@"? All of Kim's books put it out there. I'm so thankful and fulfilled.

They had faith, the heroin had patience with the hero, and the hero was just too cute. He was not good at expressing his feelings, but in the end it all worked out. This was a very sweet/cute read. I don't like that it was so very short which is why I only gave three stars. There were tiny grammatical errors, but the story was too adorable for me to mind overmuch. If you are looking for a sweet romance that has some faith, and you're short on time, I recommend this e-book.....too cute/sweet.

Read about the trust these women had in God's provision for their happiness By Amazon Customer I enjoy reading a clean fun story that I can escape in for a little while. Mail order brides have intrigued me because of the unknown about what these young woman were walking into and the faith that they had in God to provide a love worth the risk. This was a good book and I enjoyed reading it. The story line left me wanting to read more by this author.

Warren found someone he needed in his life when he married Hannah Parrish. She hadn't attended the wedding ceremony and she'd had doubts about attending this reception, given all the sadness she'd suffered over the past year. Her own marriage had barely begun when it ended in divorce. But she was so glad she'd come to the reception. It was an ethnic extravaganza—the Basque food, the music, the dancing. The bride and groom, Scott and Peyton Grant, had whirled around the dance floor a couple of times, then parted so Scott could dance with his mother and Peyton could dance with her father. And then there was a series of handsome dark-haired men who claimed the bride—brothers, cousins, uncles.Paco Lacoumette presided over the party with all the aplomb of a king and was clearly in his element. The couples dancing would cease and the Basque men in their traditional dress of white with red vests and caps would take the floor and put on a show to the wild applause of the guests. Then more couples dancing. Even Ginger was dragged from her chair and pulled out to dance, despite her efforts to decline. She danced with men she knew—Cooper, Spencer, Mac, Scott—and men she didn't know, those good-looking, dark Lacou-mette relatives. At one point she spied Troy, Grace's boyfriend, who must have just arrived. Grace, Ginger's boss and owner of the flower shop in Thunder Point, thought Troy wasn't going to make it and had been so disappointed, yet there he was, twirling Grace around with almost professional skill. And judging by the glowing look on Grace's face, she was completely thrilled!Wine flowed, food was constantly replenished, dancing and laughter filled the night. Ginger felt pretty for the first time in so long. She wore a new dress, cut to her slim figure. She'd lost a lot of weight in the past several months; men were looking at her in a way they hadn't before, and she actually enjoyed the feel of their eyes on her. Those lusty, dark-haired Basque men did nothing to conceal their appreciative gazes. The whole atmosphere was magical—teenagers were dancing or dashing about the grounds and orchard, sneaking behind trees for stolen kisses, children were riding on the shoulders of fathers, grandfathers and uncles, women were clapping in time to the music, laughing, singing, gossiping. Peyton and Scott were in much demand on the dance floor and in between songs many toasts were made. There were far too many Lacou-mettes to remember all their names, but they made her feel welcome and appreciated, thanking her repeatedly for helping Grace bring the wedding flowers. There was one darkly handsome man she'd noticed right away because he was the only one who seemed sulky and unhappy, and he was the one approaching her now as she stood beside her table. He had the swarthy good looks and fierce eyes of a pirate or maybe a serial killer. And with such precision timing, he had singled her out while everyone else from her table was dancing."Hey, pretty lady," he said with a smile that was off-kilter. His words were slurred. That would at least partially account for the half-mast eyes and pouting expression—he was obviously drunk. Well, this happened at weddings with great regularity, especially weddings where the wine flowed so liberally."Time for a dance!" he said."Thank you, but I'm going to sit this one out," she replied."Hmm," he said, stroking his chin. "Then we should go straight to the hayloft!"She was appalled. But she remained composed and confident. "I'm sitting that out, as well.""No, come with me," he said. "You and me—let's do this." And then he reached for her. And grabbed her right breast. She shrieked, shoved him away. His feet got tangled, he fell backward over a chair and went down, hitting his head on the way. And there he lay, motionless and unconscious."Help," she said. Then louder. "Help!"She got far more attention than she wanted or expected. And of course, there were the questions. What happened? Are you hurt? Did he pass out? Is he dead?"He grabbed at me," she said, waving a hand over the area of her breast without pointing or saying it. "I shoved him away and he fell and…I think he might've hit his head on the table."There he lay in a heap, on his back, his legs twisted awkwardly. In just seconds Peyton and Scott were there, Scott crouching and lifting the man's eyelids, looking at his pupils. "Well, they're equal, but damn…they're big. Does he take anything?" he asked his bride."Yes, wine," Peyton said. "He killed a full skin before the dancing."Then Paco was pushing his way through the crowd, looking down. "I knew it would come to this," he said. "There was no slowing him down.""I think we should call 911, get a head CT, make sure he didn't crack his skull," Scott said."His head is made of wood," Paco said. "It would serve him right to be carried out of his sister's wedding on one of those backboard things and spend the night in a hospital." Paco reached for the ice bucket on the table. Everyone scooted back immediately, as if they knew what was coming. Peyton pulled Scott away while Paco took a bottle of white wine out of the bucket, put it on the table and doused the man with the ice water. He sputtered and coughed and sat up."See what I'm telling you? Wood. George! Sal! Mikie! Get Matthew from your sister's wedding! Hide his keys!" The men moved into action immediately. Paco looked at Ginger and said, "There's always one. I apologize." Then he took in the gathering crowd and clapped. "I think it's time I dance with my wife!"Grace arrived, pushing her way through the crowd. "Ginger! Is everything all right?""I'm not sure," she said, looking as the men were leaving—three of them walking steadily and one weaving dangerously."My brother, Matt," Peyton said. "He has issues. Divorce issues. He was divorced a little over a year ago but it appears he's still very bitter. Weddings don't seem to bring out the best in him. He didn't hurt you, did he?""He didn't quite connect," Ginger said. "I was about to say good-night anyway. I'm going back to my folks' house in Portland for the night.""I might kill Matt," Peyton said."Just enjoy the rest of your party," Ginger said. "No harm done. To me, anyway. God, I hope I didn't hurt him.""You heard my father—his head is made of wood.""I'll call you in the morning," Grace said. "Troy had some car trouble on the way up here and we'll have to see where that stands in the morning and figure out how we're all getting home. I've got the van, you take your father's car back to him."Ginger turned to Peyton. "It was a wonderful reception. You look ravishing. And I was just thinking, the Basque people really know how to get married."Ginger's parents, Dick and Sue, had waited up. That was definite evidence as to how concerned they were about her—they stayed up past ten when their usual bedtime was before nine. And when she walked in the front door, looking perfectly alive, they both stood from their recliners. They looked at her expectantly."Did you have a good time?" Sue asked hesitantly."I had a lovely time," she said. "The flowers were beautiful, the wedding party was gorgeous and the party was like something out of a fairy tale. You wouldn't believe the fun of Basque dancing and music! And the food? Oh, my God, the food was just amazing. And I'm exhausted—I'm going straight to bed.""Are you…comfortable in your room, Ginger?" Sue asked."Yes, of course. And thank you for making it so nice for me."She kissed them both on their cheeks and went upstairs. Upstairs to the large bedroom and small adjacent nursery that had been renovated especially for her when she'd come home to her parents', pregnant and alone; to the room where she had cared for her little son for the four short months of his life.Ginger had been staying with her father's cousin Ray Anne in Thunder Point for the last month. It was through Ray Anne that she'd gotten the job in Grace's flower shop, a job that was really saving her life, hour by hour. Before she came back to Portland with Grace for this wedding and weekend visit, Ray Anne had called Sue and asked her to pack up all those baby things that Ginger had been looking at since his death over nine months ago. The crib and mobile had been taken down, the clothes removed from the drawers, boxed up and stored, the necessary accoutrements like the car seat, bouncy chair, baby bean bag, bath items and changing table were all gone. She didn't think her parents had given them away, but they were out of sight. Probably stored in the attic or garage. There was only one framed picture of Ginger and Josh that she found in the top drawer. She took it out, put it on the bedside table and changed into her pajamas. When her father had suggested, rather emotionally, that Ginger go to Thunder Point and stay with Ray Anne for at least a few weeks, she had not wanted any part of it. But it was plain to see her parents needed a break from her grief. Now she was so glad she had gone. When she was in Thunder Point, she at least had the illusion of getting on with her life. She had a new, improved appearance, at Ray Anne's insistence. She had that lovely little job in the flower shop. She had slept well and had an appetite again. Oh, she'd longed for little Josh, like always. But she was marching on.She crawled into the bed at her parents' house, turned the picture of herself and her baby toward her, left the light on so she could see it and sobbed.Troy Headly had missed the Lacoumette-Grant wedding ceremony and barely made it to the reception. His Jeep had broken down by the side of the road and AAA had to send a tow truck. At least the tow-truck driver had been willing to drop him off at the Lacoumette farm where the festivities were held, but it left him and Grace with her flower-delivery van to drive to a hotel in Portland. They left the valet to park the flower van so they could check in. The day was not going the way he'd hoped it would. He had proposed, however. In the pear grove at the farm while the revelers had partied under a big tent beside the grove. And Grace had said yes. When he finally had her alone in the hotel room, he kissed her senseless. "Do you really like the ring, Gracie? Because we could go together to the jeweler and get a better one.""You're not taking my ring!" she said emphatically. She placed it on her finger. "You picked it out yourself and I love it! I love you! I couldn't wear it tonight and draw attention to myself like that—it's Peyton's day. But the second we get home, I'm going to be showing everyone." Then she was the one who grew serious. "Are you sure about this, Troy? Because you didn't want a wife so soon."He laughed and whirled her around and swept her onto the bed. He pulled off her pumps and ran a hand up her thigh. "I didn't want children so soon, either, but guess what? We're starting right now." He covered her flat belly with his big hand. "We're going to have to get better at this birth-control thing or we'll end up with twenty.""I don't think there's time for twenty," she said."Gracie," he said, his hand roaming, his voice a little breathless. "Is this a garter belt?"She shrugged. "I think you bring out the slutty underwear in me.""Oh, honey, you plan to drug me with sex and get at least ten babies out of me before I know what's hit me. Is that right? Huh? When are we getting married?""We have a little time. Maybe we should elope before my mother tries to plan a coronation from her sickbed.""I don't want to elope," he said. "I want to party! Please, Gracie, take off this dress! Let's do it, then we can argue about the wedding. I always get my way after I make you feel good." He kissed her. "I know exactly how to get my way." He pulled down the zipper on the back of her dress and helped her shimmy out of it. "God," he said. "I'm going to make you very happy."George Lacoumette and his wife, Lori, insisted on taking Matt to the hospital…with a bucket in his lap. They didn't really think he'd cracked his head open, they explained. They thought the likelihood of concussion was lower than alcohol poisoning. But there would be nothing as awkward as the untimely death of a member of the wedding party. In an effort to protect Peyton's happy memories of her special day, they forced Matt into their car and then into the emergency room.Matt was pissed as hell. He knew he'd been out of line and regretted it, but he wanted to be taken home. He still lived in the apartment he'd shared with his ex-wife, Natalie, a woman he still loved, except that he hated her. It was Natalie's fault that he'd gotten smashed at the wedding. They'd been married on the farm and he was still in a state of anger and depression over the divorce, which had come much too soon after the wedding. The ER doctor started an IV, then left the room as a bag of fluid ran into Matt. He sobered up fast. The doctor returned after a while."Wow," Matt said. "I only see one of you!""Welcome back." The doctor laughed."I didn't know you could do that! One IV, instant sobriety! Instant shame!""Yeah, it's magic. So, you have a headache?""Right here," Matt said, pointing to the back of his head. "Am I injured?""Possible liver damage, but we didn't see any blood or bumps. Let's check the eyes." The doctor waved a light across his pupils. "I'm going to go out on a limb here and suggest you bumped your head on the way to passing out. So—this a problem for you?""Hitting my head and passing out?" he asked."No, drinking like a pig and falling down," the doctor clarified. "Are you an alcoholic?""Ah, shit." He rubbed his head. "I'm divorced. I got married in that same orchard a couple of years ago. It didn't last long. The marriage, that is. It was kind of…what's the word?""Painful? Embarrassing? Grievous? Lonely? Regrettable?" the doctor tried."Yeah, those are the words. I might've overdone it a little tonight.""So you're not adjusting well?" he asked."My brothers and sisters have taken to calling me Mad Matt. Does that tell you anything?""You might want to consider some counseling. Before you really hurt yourself.""Doc, I appreciate your help, but if there's one thing I don't ever want to talk about it's my ex-wife and my divorce.""Brother, there is life after divorce. I am living proof.""You?""Me. According to my ex-wife I keep lousy hours, I'm inattentive off the job, I don't pitch in, I'm snarky and critical, a tightwad, insensitive, selfish, many negative things. The list is long.""I didn't think anyone divorced a doctor," Matt said, sounding surprised."The divorce rate among doctors is high," he said. "I'm going to let you go home. If you have any problems or questions, call me. Don't sit and wonder if you're okay, just call me. And be done drinking for the day.""Funny," Matt said, "the divorce rate among farmers is low. Yet.""Even if you were given a reason, that's just one opinion," the doctor said. "You going to be okay now?"

A BEAUTIFULLY WRITTEN, POIGNANT STORY OF HOPE, COURAGE, AND SECOND CHANCES By The Literacy Advocate SERIES READING ORDER APPEARS AT THE END OF THIS REVIEW!Robyn Carr is in top form in her eighth entry in the Thunder Point series. A NEW HOPE brings Ginger Dysart, the ‘niece’ of real estate agent Ray Anne, to the Lacoumette farm for the wild and wonderful Basque heritage celebration that is the marriage of Dr. Scott Grant and Peyton Lacoumette. At the wedding, a very drunk, unruly man embarrasses himself by propositioning and groping Ginger. Although Ginger takes it in stride, the man feels remorseful for his out-of-character behavior, and he decides to drive to Thunder Point to find Ginger, with the thought of apologizing in person. When Ginger meets Matt, he looks and acts quite differently from the drunken clod who humiliated himself at the wedding. Matt does more than apologize…he asks Ginger to dinner, and later reflects on his surprise, not knowing why he made such an impulsive invitation. Fans of Robyn Carr’s writing know, however! Carr gives her characters time to figure themselves out and come to their own conclusions, especially when they are working through a broken heart, as Matt is doing. Matt spontaneously explains to Ginger at their first meeting that he’s nursing a broken heart, having just been through a bitter divorce. He goes on to explain that he’d been married himself in the same orchard in which Peyton and Scott were married, and he simply couldn’t handle the memories or the malaise he felt. Thus begins the friendship, and eventual romance, of Ginger and Matt. What makes A NEW HOPE so marvelous are the compelling characterizations Carr develops for Matt and Ginger. Ginger is a heartbroken shell of a woman, only just now starting to develop the will to live again, after suffering a devastating personal loss. Ginger is possibly Carr’s most touching character in years, and her journey back to life is reminiscent of Mel’s journey in Carr’s fabulous VIRGIN RIVER book. Matt, however, is no Jack (Mel’s love); he is not in possession of his whole heart, and isn’t ready for a relationship. Matt is bitter and angry about his divorce, has unresolved issues, and a heartbreak of his own that he does not even let himself think about, let along face, for most of the novel. Matt has become fearful of commitment and jaded regarding his belief in love and marriage, to the point of denying to himself his true feelings for Ginger. Watching Ginger regain her emotional footing, take a chance on love again, and work her gentle, nurturing magic on Matt, is truly a joy to read. A satisfying aspect of Ginger’s character development is that she doesn’t look to Matt as the solution to her problems and her loneliness; she is a strong young woman who for the first time is, despite her damage, taking ownership of her personal happiness. Matt’s painful, realistic development as he faces his anger and fear is equally as affecting. It is not a smooth road to their HEA. Carr does a bang-up job of developing her main characters here; both Matt and Ginger are splendidly drawn. The story is greatly enhanced by the appearance and involvement (not just cameos) of some of our other Thunder Point favorites…Grace and Troy, Winnie and her new young friend Charlie, Scott and Peyton, Ray Anne, and most notably her beau, Al Michel, whose own loss of his son to SIDS makes him the one individual uniquely qualified to offer support to Ginger when her memories threaten the fragile emotional progress she has made. For this reader, A NEW HOPE is the finest, most heartwarming of the Thunder Point novels to date. It is a beautifully written, poignant story of hope, courage, and second chances. A joyfully-given five stars!AUDIOPHILES: I highly recommend the audiobook narration (I purchase the ones I want to re-"read" from Audible.com, but they are all also produced in audio CD versions carried by many public libraries). I've listened to each title in the series; they're narrated by the incomparable Therese Plummer, who brings every character to life. And if you haven't read the VIRGIN RIVER series, RUN to your book provider and find it! For a list of the correct Virgin River series reading order, please see my review of the first book, titled VIRGIN RIVER; for me, it's Miss Carr's finest book.THUNDER POINT SERIES READING ORDER (this series is best read in order):1. 7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Just lovely By Jonetta (Ejaygirl) Originally posted on The Book NymphoGinger Dysart is slowly recovering from the loss of her child on top of the disintegration of her ill-advised marriage. Working in the Thunder Point flower shop and being around a network of interesting and supportive women has raised her from a dark abyss. When she "meets" Matt Lacoumette at his sister's wedding reception, it's an unlikely encounter between two people rebounding from painful life events.I loved this story for several reasons.First, Ginger's descent into severe depression was understandable, presenting a very realistic response to the loss of a child. When her cousin, Ray Anne, steps in and moves her to Thunder Point, it begins an extraordinary healing process that exemplifies the best the community has to offer. The town embraces Ginger without pity, just giving her a reason to get up each day and breathe.Next, when Matt comes to Thunder Point to try and make amends to Ginger for his boorish behavior at the wedding reception, we're introduced to one of the most unconventional, intense characters I've come across. He's passionate, unpredictable and charming but his behavior can also border on oddness at times. Though he's got some serious issues stemming from his first marriage, his romance with Ginger is a delight.Lastly, family is again a strong theme and both Ginger and Matt are surrounded by caring members who are an important part of their lives. They're a major aspect of the story and make a very big difference. The books in this series always provide me with a reliable reading experience. I can count on a strong sense of community and family, heartwarming moments and likable characters. I loved everything about Ginger and Matt's romance and rise from despair. It was a lovely return to Thunder Point.(I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review)

Does not compare to other books in Thunder Point series By JL After a rather chauvistic start more suited to the 70s, the book reduced itself to a series of not that interesting conversations and juvenile interactions between the two main characters without the more dramatic challenges or emotions seen in Carr's other books. Some of the chauvinistic and cultural descriptions of the Basque family were offensive. The overbearing older sister was tedious. I agree with other reviewers who commented the writing was not in Carr's usual style. Perhaps the pressure of turning out new books every 3-4 months has led her to hire ghost writers and focus on more superficial plots. I have enjoyed Carr's other books feeling the characters as friends I liked and cared about. Most original and more interesting Thunder Point characters had only passing references .

It was supposed to be no strings attached, but Clayton can't get the woman off his mind or out of his heart and he wonders if a life without Daisy is a life worth having. Will this just be a summer fling, or can the two overcome their pasts and find a future together? AMAZONI really liked this story and I liked Daisy a lot. She was funny too! I just want to say- "Can Daisy be my new best friend?". I also liked her niece, Aubrey who was quite the lovely little girl, older acting than her years. It was fun that she acted a lot like her dead mother but looked so much like her aunt. She was often so adult like in her approach. I really enjoyed the nights that Daisy and Aubry cooked together. They sure came up with some interesting meals. Clayton, it was interesting to watch his character and past life unfold. What a good man, messed up some yes, but basically a good man. Against his better judgement he was drawn to Daisy almost from the start. She also was interested in him, the first man since the death of her husband that got her excited. They were good together even with the special challenges that they faced. Aubry in the beginning called Clayton the "scary man" but quickly warmed to their new neighbor, seeing a side to him that others missed. Clayton had plenty of family dysfunction but loved his sister, Maggie and wanted to be there for her too. There were strong, interesting secondary characters (like Maggie) that added to the story.Yes, I thoroughly enjoyed this one.P.S. I know it says this is a Novella, but it sure feels like a full novel.I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Daisy was just such a great character, and a great mother to Aubrey. She made me laugh and cry, sometimes in the same paragraph. She is so sure of herself and who she is and yet very vulnerable. Aubrey is a delight. So grown up and yet such a little girl. I like how she just took to Clayton and made him part of the family. I'm so glad Clayton found them and let them into his life. Sugar Jamison has a wonderful way of telling a story. You'll smile, cry and laugh. And when you finish the book, you'll just sigh because it was such a satisfying read. The only question I have is how long do I have to wait before the next book in the series is available.

I loved the believable characters especially curvy Daisy and Clayton, an Army Ranger vet who was wounded in Afghanistan. I laughed, cried and sighed through the captivating plot. I was so vested, I didn't want the book to end. I highly recommend A Curvy Girl for the Cadet and look forward to reading more by Ms. Jamison.I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

The ATLAS mechanized battle suits are the pinnacle of military technology, boasting awesome destructive power—but what is behind the armor is only human. Rade Galaal, elite soldier and ATLAS operator, has been tested—and broken—by savage battles and devastating losses. Now, an old enemy poses a new threat.

The vile insectile aliens that once threatened Earth have regrouped to engineer a new apocalyptic assault on mankind, and the ATLAS mechs are called to defend the very survival of the human race.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. and the other from his best friend Tahoe By AudioBook Reviewer Rade Galaal and the MOTHs are split into two teams to attack the alien force on and near Tau Ceti II. No one says it out loud, but they are likely to be suicide missions unless there is a miracle. After capturing one fant, the human scientists are able to create a signal device that allows them to remain invisible to the alien hordes, at least that is the hope. No one knows what awaits them in the deep recesses of the enormous alien vessel, but it is sure to be extremely dangerous. The chapters alternate from one team to the next throughout the novel. One from the point of view of Rade, and the other from his best friend Tahoe. The action is nonstop, and as soon as they gain some sort of advantage or rest, the aliens come back to attack them. Each chapter ends in a cliffhanger at some seemingly impossible situation. There is no question that Atlas 3 is an action packed book. Unfortunately, the steady stream of violence starts to sound like a video game rather than a novel. It is not that it isn’t enjoyable, it is, just that there is little plot advancement throughout the book. They just fight and fight and fight, from one impossible conflict to the next, fight, escape, repeat. The pattern becomes predictable. A noteworthy scene is when Tahoe gets caught in a narrow tunnel, aliens nipping at his heels. The claustrophobia makes you sweat with the character. It is horrifyingly real and expertly described. The novel is performed by Peter Berkrot, who does an excellent job, and is now the voice of the Atlas series. He was the voice for Atlas 2 and from a scan of Audible, it looks like he might be redoing Atlas 1. This is a good move to keep the series consistent. You have listened to or read Atlas 1 and 2; there is no reason to stop now. Each novel in the series has a distinctly different tone. This one is pure action, with little plot or character development, but enjoyable on that level. It wraps up the series nicely while leaving an opening for other spin off stories.Audiobook provided for review by the publisher. Please find this complete review and many others at my review blog[If this review helped, please press YES. Thank God for some variety in writing styles. I was getting bored with the "normal" style exemplified in the last dozen SF novels I've read. Granted I wanted to strangle the author a couple time on his chapter ending cliff hangers following an engrossing, action packed story line, but I think it made for a better read in the end. There is a ton of action and suspense throughout the book and the Atlas series. Main characters were developed well. I am looking forward to the next book in the series.

I have once again read a book for my lovely wife, and as such I am happy to give a review for said book. The one in question for today is a series rather than a single book. It is the Atlas series by Isaac Hooke. I cannot tell you how much I enjoyed this series. I’m pretty sure it was the reason I didn’t sleep for several days in a row. The story starts out small, following Rade, a Dissuader who finds himself quickly down on his luck. Having had enough of his poor lifestyle, he decides to make a go for a new life in America. So, this story seems typical enough right? Small town dude from a south of the border city decides to move to America for a better life right? Well, it’s not as simple as that. America has pretty much turned into a wet dream thought up by Donald Trump. Any non-native born people seeking citizenship have to serve time in the military to gain citizenship, and even then they get treated like crap by most people outside of the military.Oh, I should probably mention right about now that this series is set in the future. I can’t recall if an exact date is given or not, but humanity has advanced enough that we as a whole have become space faring. We can also use gates, a la Cowboy Bebop, to travel vast distances. So, the human race has spread to the stars. What does this have to do with Rade? Well, he gets to choose which branch he would like to serve. He just so happens to pick the hardest branch available. The Moths. What are the Moths? Imagine Navy Seals, but Navy Seals that have been concentrated to the levels of badassdom that would happen if Chuck Norris and Bruce Lee were able to have children, and then those children were strapped into giant mechanical suits of armor. That, in short is what a Moth is.I could go on and on about the story and all that, but you probably want to know: is it worth the read? The simple answer to this question is yes. The long answer is composed of several questions. Do you like action? Do you like sci-fi? Do you like space operas? Do you like reading stories about how underdogs struggle and eventually redeem themselves in the eyes of themselves? If you answered yes to any of these questions, chances are you will enjoy reading this series.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. 5 Amazing, Fabulous Stars!!!! By Debbie is Flippin Pages I don't give 5 stars easily. This story and the characters got under my skin and lived and breathed. It took me 4 days to read this book. 4 days to let it simmer. 4 days to savor every word. I have read nearly 50 books this year and only one other earned 5 stars from me. Thank you Tanya Holmes for your awesome words and sharing your amazing gift. This is a tough book to review without giving away integral parts of the story so I am going to refrain from any sort of overview.I do however have a few thoughts to note. This is a paranormal but in a more unusual sense than I am used to reading. There are no vampires or werewolves, fairies or the like. It is unique and original! The book ends in a cliffhanger. I HATE cliffhangers! So reading The Darkest Frost, knowing it was a going to end with a cliffhanger, was a huge leap of faith and trust for me. I am so happy I took that leap. Yes, I still have a millions questions. Yes, I am impatient to continue the story but I am actually OK with letting this story simmer awhile longer. It ended just where it needed too. I had no late night urge to hunt down the author with my freshly sharpened pitchfork. ;)There is definitely a steam factor to this read. It's not overloaded but it's there and it's hot! Ms. Holmes can definitely turn up the heat! The Darkest Frost really resonated with me and I hope it does the same for the rest of you!!! There is something deeper going on within this book that is more than mere words on a page. This book is still very much with me. I suspect it will be for a long while. I am in reader Heaven!

Great paranormal story that's a bit different than the usual By kmontemayor There are so many good things about this book, it's hard to know where to begin. I guess I'll start with the author's description--A Gothic paranormal romance with a twist. I couldn't agree more. Jane Eyre is my all time favorite classic, and when Danieve said this, my heart sang:Okay, remember Jane Eyre? Remember how Mr. Rochester described their connection? He'd said it felt like a mystical string had been tied around his rib linking him to Jane's. Well, it seemed Braeden and I were joined together in similar fashion. Only ours was more like a trip wire with GPS.Ms. Holmes somehow manages to create this modern-day story feel like it's set in the 1700's. I was only jarred into the present when things like cell phones are mentioned.Another thing I loved was the way Danieve sensed auras. It was all about the smells.Contrition-smells like chocolateFear-saltwaterAnger-sulphurDesire-nutmegLies-cow manure. (This is my favorite. Yes, Danieve can literally smell your BS.)Ms. Holmes doesn't mind taking risks in her writing. (view spoiler) While Danieve's pov is written in first person, the other characters are all written in third person. It was different, but once I got used to it, I kind of liked it.I was bummed when I finished and I realized that book two wasn't out yet. Then I realized it comes out tomorrow, pre-ordered it, and did the happy dance. Yay!

But as I kept going I realized how important every detail was to the story. I always wonder (with any book) if the background or descriptions are beefed up to increase word count. Well, that is NOT the case here.Nope, Tanya is very deliberate and thoughtful in her writing, and it shows with each chapter. The development of not only the characters, but also the entire scenario is amazing and truly pulls you in. I want to tell you all about this book, but that is hard to do without spoiling it for you, so this is all you get.Braeden is quite the main character. He is difficult to read, yet you desperately want to know more. As we are allowed to learn about him, Braeden becomes the flame to this moth. I needed more, all the time. And Denvieve (also Danielle - love the name btw) is a heroine you can root for. Determined to uncover the truth, she puts herself in, um, interesting positions that really pay off for the reader. And let's not forget Xavier. Who is he you ask? Well, that's for you to find out ;)Oh, by the way, if you are looking for some heat look no further. Also, you may want a pair of leather gloves to hold the kindle - you never know when it might get hard to hold ;)

Having survived the Battle of DC, he now sets his eyes on seizing that which he claims as rightfully his—the world. But as Lukas swells his ranks and presses outward, battling old foe and combating new threats, he comes to realize the most dangerous enemy is not the distant army gathering to beat down his walls—it is the inconspicuous serpent lurking in plain sight. Reduced to a refugee and fleeing the far-reaching grasp of the Imperium, Adam Reinhart begins a perilous journey to find hope among the chaos. However, with the news of his family’s death at the Siege of Fort Bragg, Adam struggles not only for survival, but for the strength to protect what good is left within him as he traverses a broken nation composed of nightmares and savages. Hundreds of miles to the south, Sarah Reinhart and her family live! Barely escaping the talons of war, they soon hear that Adam had allegedly died at the hands of Lukas. As Sarah fights her way through the aftermath of a battle-torn America, she too will awaken a fury and discover what she is willing to become to see her children safe. Three separate journeys, intertwined in an epic struggle for survival. And as the world pushes them to the brink of madness and despair, all will fight to endure the most treacherous threat of all: the dragons of men.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. I enjoyed this book By Amazon Customer I enjoyed this book... The character development was excellent..Adam's struggle was realistic. He went from hopelessness and darkness to purpose despite losing everything he held dear.. We got to understand Gene Smith a bit more. His anger and fear are poignant but he also has a different side to him. My only gripe was Sarah .. she loved her husband and cherished but looses him and almost immediately falls for someone else. I understand how adversity and hardship can pull people together but for them to fall in love seemed unrealistic to me. Also it seems to me that at the end it is unrealistic that Adam will not know that Sarah and Eric were together.. the kids and the other people at the fort knew so he will find out eventually and when he does I think it will hurt him alot because it seems to me that she moved on from Adam and only remains because she feels obligated. Maybe this will be explored a little bit in the next book but not too much. The kids Alexandra and Judah were sad and joyful for me.. In the end these kids proved to be stronger than anyone. The villains were hard to figure out and I had no clue which one would come on top.. the climax and ending surprised me.The book has well developed and realistic characters which I enjoyed reading about and hope to go back to. The state of the country the war, the cost of war , are described well and as a reader I felt the reality the author was describing how truly horrible war is. The description of how America was destroyed by a collapsing economy and overblown government was frightening and realistic. Faith was also an important aspect of this book. How faith can pull people out of an abyss of darkness and you see how faith influences the characters that have believed. I loved this book .Hope to read the next one soon.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. I enjoyed the character development By Dale W. I enjoyed the character development. In the beginning, the story was very fast paced. It was well written, but I would have preferred the language to have been toned down a bunch.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Even better than the first of the series! By Lauren Brenon I liked this book even better than the first! It was suspenseful, amusing, and terrifying all at the same time! The author had me laughing, crying, and genuinely concerned for the characters in the novel. The author visits some very dark places within this novel, but great truths are also found along the way. Great read for both men and women, and this series meets the criteria for so many different genre that it's impossible not to enjoy it!
