When I first read this book it immediately took me on a stroll down memory lane through my childhood and forced me to reminisce about many of the Saturday morning routines with my mom and family… It wasn’t exactly a trip to the city like Zalika and her mom traveled, but a trip around the house! I visited and cleaned every room…I remember the sights and sounds of the vacuum with gospel music blasting in the back ground and momma telling us to stop playing and get finished! Oh how I remember the smell of Windex and pledge and all those household cleaners on Saturday morning! I remember the crumpled up newspaper and black ink that stained my fingers from cleaning every glass table and nick knack stand in the house! This book did that for me! It took me on adventure as an adult that I’d never been on as a child. The city was always too busy or too noisy while reading I could feel the tremble of the train, I could hear the sounds of the city and I wanted to go look for Aunt Sylvia’s house with the green trim and brown stairs. Memories that were the author’s became infused in my own… A literary work full of colorful language and valuable views about life, love and family! Timeless treasures from the author Zalika Etienne’s childhood lifted right off the pages and floated around me and came alive. I love the way this book made me feel inside, I laughed, I nodded and I imagined and I remembered. On Saturday Morning is a must read for all. I loved it so much that I shared it with every classroom in my school! Zalika Etienne BRAVO! I can’t wait for the next one, On Sunday Morning perhaps! By Najiyyah Alexandre On Saturday Morning is a beautiful story that I believe every child and parent can relate to. This story highlights the value of what may seem like a normal routine, yet left a lasting impression on this young girl. This is a great read for children and will definitely help to build dialogue with parent and child regarding the memories they have made together. Love it!!!
