"I never did get the hang of coin-operated public showers, but nailed sneaking shots of vodka from the freezer while my husband filled up the gas tank." Does your marital bucket list include an extended road trip across America? Have you ever wondered what it would be like to sell everything and start fresh someplace new? Are you looking for a road trip resource that will share the reality of all that togetherness, rather than an edited narrative full of sunshine? If so, this book is for you. In January of 2012, Sonja Millings took an early retirement from the fast-paced corporate world of publishing, and reluctantly accompanied her new husband on his lifelong dream of traveling across the country in a small RV with their Golden Retriever. Prior to the trip, they had never spent more than two consecutive weeks together. What could possibly go wrong? After selling almost everything they owned and renting out their house for a year, they set off on what would become the ultimate test of their new marriage. Endless months on the road provided the perfect opportunity for Sonja to look back on her life and brutally examine her role in past relationships, fully grieve the loss of family members, and challenge lifelong destructive patterns of behavior. It only took 14 months and 38,000 miles. Soul searching across America became an unexpected gift after turning off the noise, getting rid of the clutter, and clearing away the distractions of a busy life.

About the Author Sonja Millings retired after 20 years in publishing sales management. She was born with salt water in her veins and sand between her toes, which explains why she feels most at home near the ocean. She is a writer and ocean advocate. She is also a recovering backseat driver with teeny-tiny control issues, according to her husband, Howard, with whom she lives on the central coast of California.

In fact, I wolfed it down in a single day!I expect this story will have wide audience appeal, particularly to "Baby Boomers" who are beginning to face retirement. Many people harbor dreams of extended traveling, similar to what the author and her husband did, without any clear idea of what it would require and very few true accounts available on the topic.Overall, I was impressed by both the inner and outer journeys this book chronicled.

I suppose being from a publishing background helps get sub-par books like these out on the market By Xenia The previous reviews are clearly by the author's friends. Much more a marriage memoir than a travel one. I suppose being from a publishing background helps get sub-par books like these out on the market. This was in no way a) helpful to those of us looking to travel extensively through the US or b) marriage advice. Rather, it was like a drawn out complaint about her husband.

By AmericanWoman A non-stop bitch-a-thon...This is a one-sided story (more of a diary) about a much married, mid-life career woman's experiement at living with a new mate as they travel the USA. They often stay in hotels or at homes of friends and relatives and sometimes they camp in their vehicle, a 22 foot motorhome.Sonja can write. That's what redeems this book. And she often details the normal couple arguments that many of us can relate to. But sheesh. She reminds me of someone I might often avoid because I'm not always up for listening to her complain..the kind of gal who is constantly wondering why she's not happy. What I get from the book is: Sonja seems unhappy, deep down, no matter where she is or who she is with. The problems feel like she is unsatisfied period...and the new mate simply becomes of focus of the anger because he is nearby and nobody else is. She is constantly dissatified with pretty much everything he does or says.During most of the book the couple is fuming or not speaking and the anger is not light or short-termed. Even driving down the road in their rv seems torture most of the time. (For myself, I can't imagine...as this is one of our HAPPIEST, most cheerful times.)It would be hard to find anybody who WOULD suit her, I kept thinking, because she's not a happy person to start with.I keep coming back to the thought: these two are not delighted with each other almost at all...regardless of anything else. A happy long-term relationship, I say after having many that weren't, takes major LIKE of the other person and a good sense of fairness and humor, PLUS a fairly happy outlook in general even WITHOUT each other. I am near the end...and have read that there is a happy ending. I suspect that they give up the long RV trips and settle into a home. I can't help but think that this idea might make for a happier ending for the book...but I bet her next book (and I'm anxious to read it) will show her moving on to another situation without the Howard.
