Jessica was a dedicated woman, to both God and her handsome husband Blake. Raised in the 1970's to be submissive in the traditions of the Bible belt, and sheltered from the world outside, she becomes a prisoner of that tradition. Deceived, betrayed, and routinely ignored, she settles; as lifelong dreams fade and systemically fall apart. Add children to the mix, and life becomes more unstable as insecurity, tension, and terror grasp her by the throat. But in a revelation of truth, she comes to grip with her reality; and plans her escape. Vows and Lies will transport the reader through numerous mysteries, volatile lies, and extraordinary deception as the secrets of Jessica's life unravel. She then risks everything to bring about an ending that is both revealing, and exquisitely glorious. Leggett’s emotionally rich debut novel is suspenseful, revealing, and deeply moving from start to finish.

Vows & Lies: A Novel, by Phoebe Leggett

Review Like a phoenix from the fire, Jessica rose up from the depths of sorrowand despair. She made it out and wants to share her story hoping shecan help others suffering from domestic violence. I applaud PhoebeLeggett for the courage to write this book. It is truly a gift from atalented writer and a woman of God.Reading this book, I found myself reminded of experiences from my own first marriage. There were many times I had no one to turn to.Hannah's faith in God and her endurance to keep going are inspirations for us all. How lucky her children were to have such a strong, loving mother! I would recommend this book to every woman I know and I pray that reading it will keep them from falling into the same cycle of abuse. Thank you for sharing with the world, I know it must have been hard reliving it and writing it.I love this book because it made me realize why Jessica stayed in themarriage and why she endured so much physical and emotional pain. Sheexplains a lot about her childhood which sets the stage for how we allow our husbands to treat us. I endured this kind of marriage for 29years; my two children for 18 years. If you are in a marriage orrelationship that presents pain, suffering and sorrow for you...GET OUTNOW. Do what this author tells you and have everything ready to escapequickly. If you have children, don't let that hold you back. Call your local women's shelter beforehand and get all the info you need. Beready! Or arrange to go to a friend's or relative's house. And havethat Restraining Order. I regret putting my children through theterror. It will have an effect on them forever. Great advice and scripture verses. I wish I could have been on my kneespraying and quoting scriptures and saying the name of "Jesus JesusJesus" instead of crying and crying. Just like this author says, it makes atremendous difference when you have God holding your hand. Get thisbook now and read it.This is the book that had to be written. Not only for the necessarycathartic process, but also as an outreach to women going throughsimilar abuse. If you know an abused woman, don't be silent. Speak up.Help if possible, but do not assume it's someone else's problem.Remember that all that evil needs to succeed is for good men (or women)to do nothing. Experience should make us all aware thateven pastors, who were born in sin and will be ever so until they arecalled Home, are capable of evil. Pass this book around! This book isexcellent. It provides insight and hope for those who are battered andhurting. It takes a true faith in God to get through the tough times of life and remain steadfast. The scars of abuse can heal and God isalways faithful to those who trust in Him.

From the Author Based on true life experience, author Phoebe Leggett's debut novel reveals the hardships of an abused wife married to a minister of the gospel. In the narrative, the love Jessica longed for, and dreamed about, was innocently exchanged for dishonor, disrespect, and disgrace. Used as a punching bag to justify her husband Blake's own internal issues, intimidation through assault and verbal degradation later brought about resolutions that changed the entire landscape of her life.Trusting in the core of her raising, Jessica  struggles with Southern tradition, family expectations, and her own religious beliefs. In the end, revelations of deception, caused by a husband who no longer respects, or honors, those  same traditions, creates a catalyst for change; and brings about a glorious ending.

From the Inside Flap When Jessica fell in love at the age of nineteen, the future looked sunny and bright. Her new husband was both charismatic and handsome; their marriage, a dream-come-true. But his representation as minister of the Gospel, devoted to both God and man, wasn't justified. The truth of reality would shatter her vision, innocence, and religious beliefs when she realized her jump from the frying pan into the fire had been a horrible mistake.            Still she was committed, and worked hard at making her marriage a success. But internal turmoil, the result of assaults, insults, and battering began to slaughter the love she once had for her husband. And yet she remained true to her marriage vows. What goes on in a marriage behind closed doors is nobody's business. But when truth is revealed, families often refuse to believe their loved one is an abuser--or married to one.Family is where one goes when bruised and battered. But not Jessica's. Due to religious pressures, her reality remained hidden behind a façade of family disregard, church ineptness, and an overall lack of perception. The embarrassment she felt then disguised what appeared to be a marriage made in heaven.                                                  Love hurts, but shouldn't. Yet from the pit of despair, a thread of hope for deliverance was born. Still it required twelve years of deception to unravel the disillusionment, heartache, and despair that had long played havoc with her sanity.                                                                                                                                                                       But after years of unrestrained cruelty, the facts of realism began forcing the light of truth to shine at the end of a compelling tunnel. Misery was then replaced by a sweeping desire for freedom; once forgotten, and swept under the rug. "My days have passed, my plans are shattered. Yet the desires of my heart turn night into day; in the face of the darkness light is near" (Job 17: 11-12)Secrets of a small town girl, now grown to woman living under the shadow of death, are revealed through the eyes of an innocent wife of youth. When everything in her life unraveled, God's perseverance provided a way of escape; and just in the nick of time. "...on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has sprung up" (Matthew 4:16)"Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows" (Galatians 6:7)
