Werewolf by Night Omnibus, by Gerry Conway, Len Wein, Marv Wolfman, Mike Friedrich About the Author Len Wein is the co-creator of "Wolverine" and the "New X-Men." He is a former editor in chief of Marvel Comics, Disney Comics, and Top Cow Comics, as well as a senior editor at DC Comics. His previous work includes "The All-New, All-Different X-Men Masterworks; The Untold Legend of Batman; "and" Wonder Woman: Gods and Mortals." He lives in Woodland Hills, California.Marv Wolfman has created more characters that have gone on to television, animation, movies and toys than any other comics creator since Stan Lee. Marv is the writer-creator of Blade, the Vampire Hunter which has been turned into three hit movies starring Wesley Snipes, as well as a TV series. Marv also created Bullseye, the prime villain in the 2003 movie, Daredevil, and was the writer-creator of the New Teen Titans which was a runaway hit show on the Cartoon Network. 24 of 25 people found the following review helpful. Bronze Age horror from Marvel By Dan Pace (feral atom) Just opened the new monstrous Werewolf By Night omnibus from Marvel. This thing is awesome! Collects Marvel Spotlight 2-3, Werewolf By Night 1-44, Marvel Team-up 12, Tomb of Dracula 18, Giant-size Creatures 1 (first Tigra), Giant-size Werewolf 2-5, Marvel Premiere 28 (Legion of Monsters), and material from Monsters Unleashed magazine 6-7.This is one helluva treat for Halloween. Painted cover by Ploog with WBN #1 cover by Ploog and the Werewolf vs Moon Knight on the back. Dust jacket by Ploog or DM jacket by Arthur Adams. The painted cover has very good digital painting that adds to the original artwork.Jack Russell meets Tigra, Dracula, the Monster of Frankenstein, Spider-Man, Morbius the Living Vampire, Moon Knight and Iron Man.This is a fantastically produced volume. Yes Ploog's werewolf is the definitive one but later issues have some gripping stories, such as # 38 which is one of my favorites1160 pages of comics with 16 pages of extras.

By Adam Smasher Everything a '70's WWbN fan could want!I know one of the major complaints of the early Marvel Omnibus’s is the stock glossy paper that they often use; indeed this is one of my own complaints because originally comics were printed on cheap paper with a matte finish and the early Omnibus's had a glossy effect that takes away from some of the nostalgia. However this Omnibus uses a thinner, semi-matte style of paper stock that is more common now and improves the presentation to what would be found in many of the Marvel Masterworks. Now, the paper is also thinner, as I’m sure this is, at least partially, a by-product of the thickness of this Omnibus. It weighs in at a whopping 1176 pages, so it is satisfyingly hefty.It is the complete 1970’s, original run of WWbN, every issue of his own mag, plus the Marvel Spotlight on…, Tomb of Dracula’s, Giant Size Creatures/Werewolf, Marvel Team-Up with Spiderman, Marvel Premiere (Legion of Monsters) and even the Monsters Unleashed prose. It even has a few panels from the original lead in from Tomb of Dracula, for the sake of completion.The colors are crisp and clean, vibrant and as accurate as possible when I compared them to some of my original issues (obviously my original issues have suffered the scourges of time, to an extent). While I can’t say I have inspected every single page, yet, I did spent a couple hours looking at, reading and generally inspecting the volume and I did not notice any issues with mine.Of course I loved the whole run of WWbN but none of it shines quite as brightly as the art from the original Mike Ploog run and, thankfully, he did the cover and dust cover as well.In conclusion, if you are a fan of Jack Russell aka the Werewolf, or Mike Ploog or any other creative talent associated with his original run, or just a fan of Marvel Omnibus’s, than you cannot go wrong with this one.As an aside, The Art of Mike Ploog also comes out in the next few months and while it is assured to have some WWbN artwork (among many other things), this book certainly makes an amazing companion piece and I can only assume that was part of Marvel’s intent upon releasing this Omnibus at this time, as well as the October/Halloween Monster connection.
7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Marvel knows how to do an omnibus By Jim Davis Marvel has these omnibuses down to a science now. As products they are really quite impressive. Physically, the book is about 11-1/4" tall, 7-3/4" wide, and about 2-1/4" thick. It has1176 pages. It is hardbound with decorated boards. The dustjacket front and spine are identical to the corresponding covers but the rear jacket cover has a montage of individual issue covers while the back cover proper depicts the werewolf battling Moon Knight. The interior pages are of a thin coated stock. This makes such a large book more manageable at the price of some opacity. The see through is minimal and I'll take the thinner stock any day. The binding is sewn so the book will stay open on any page with little or no effort. The book is hefty; I would guess about 5 pounds. It is probably best read with it open on a desk or table although I did not have any problems reading it while lying on my side with the book beside me on the bed. Reading it while on your back is probably out of the question, though.The content is equally impressive. All comic books make some demands on the reader as far as the willing suspension of disbelief goes but this one more than most. I have no problem with accepting that a man can turn into a werewolf. I do have some issues with the way that condition is handled in the book, though. Russell constantly fears he will harm someone as a werewolf but acts in such a manner that makes that a virtual certainty. He is constantly taken by surprise that there is a full moon on a given night. One would think that a werewolf would be a virtual walking almanac who could quote the rising and setting of the moon for months in advance. His father seems to have dealt with the problem of lycanthropy for years in a very capable manner; Russell just seems helpless. The relative power of the werewolf is also dialed up and down as required by the plot as well. Sometimes one man is more than he can handle; at other times he holds his own against demigods.But once you accept that Jack Russell is only going to be as intelligent and powerful as the plot demands we have some excellent stories. Heroes are typically only as good as the villains they face and the werewolf has quite the rogues gallery built up by series end. The supporting cast is excellent as well. The werewolf had a fair amount of crossovers and guest appearances with the various Marvel characters. Spider-Man, Dracula, Morbius, the Monster of Frankenstein, Moon Knight (his first appearance), and Iron Man all make appearances.The book is entirely self contained; this was before the company wide crossover made that virtually impossible. There is an unresolved subplot at the very end. Typically these get resolved in other titles after a book is cancelled but I don't know whether this one ever was.The artwork is generally excellent throughout. Most people prefer Mike Ploog but I think Don Perlin is the definitive werewolf artist. Doug Moench is unquestionably the best writer but the others are fine as well.Extras are fairly generous but nothing really special. There is a letter page announcement of series cancellation, art from the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe series (but not the text), unused covers, original art (four to a page unfortunately), and a series of cover art from various previous werewolf collections.All in all, outstanding value and great entertainment. Jack Russell is a very likable hero, if not too bright on occasion. The first person narrative style really works well and sucks the reader right in. Highly recommended.
