A Frontier story of courage, determination and true dignity By ManicScribbler I don't know why I don't read more Western historicals, because when I come across one - especially one that's as well-written as 'A Rancher's Dream', I find myself completely enchanted. I have to admit, I'm shamefully ignorant about American frontier history and had to rely on Google to answer some questions. However, when I received my review copy of this book, I had barely begun it before I was engrossed in its unfolding story.This concerns Ingrid Svensen's quest for answers and her struggle to survive. After her brother and father are killed in quick succession, Ingrid has to flee for her life, trying to erase her tracks and allowing herself to trust no one. Life in these times is difficult enough if you are a strong and brawny man, so it is unimaginably tough for young Ingrid.But Ingrid has much more inner strength and determination than we usually find in the average romantic heroine and that draws the reader to her and makes her quite unforgettable. She's one of the most endearing heroines I've come across in quite a while and I felt enormous empathy with her. She is haunted by her desperate need for answers and justice for her beloved father and brother and this sets her apart from the norm.Ingrid is taken on as governess to a motherless child, daughter of Tiago Colima a wealthy Spaniard from Texas who, with a group of ranch hands plans to drive a herd of cattle to Wyoming to set up his own ranch. Ingrid and young Alma travel with them. Their journey is fraught with danger and makes gripping reading and their encounters with native American Indians are particularly poignant, not to mention frightening and thought-provoking. Ingrid's quiet, unassuming dignity in the face of some very difficult situations filled me with admiration for her. As for hot-blooded Tiago - well, he's everything you expect in a hero, and then just a bit more besides.I could happily list some of my favourite parts of this engrossing story, but I'm reluctant to give too much away. I will say, though, that events are vividly described by a consummate story-teller and I was so immersed in the story that I felt I was there, experiencing it for myself. This is a spellbinding story of bravery and determination, the grim realities of living in harsh times and the wonderful community spirit of the courageous people who came together to make that living tolerable.(A copy of this e-book was provided in exchange for an honest review)

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Strong Western Woman! By megs Kept me interested and stayed up too late several nights to finish the book. There is some predictability to the plot, but enough twists and turns to keep one wondering. If you like historical fiction and/or Western themed plots and/or love stories and/or strong women characters, you will enjoy this book. Realized when I finished the book that I had read the #2 in the series first. It holds it's own without the #1 book.
