" But since the book was recommended by an author I DO read and like By Desert Willow I'll start by saying that I don't read romance books or erotica often. I'm a SciFi, non-fiction, and horror fan. When I was offered this book for free in exchange for an honest review, I initially thought, "No, not my thing, probably another virgin getting ravaged by a mercenary." But since the book was recommended by an author I DO read and like, and since it was set in my northern-neighbor, Alaska, I figured I would give it a shot. It was free, so really, what would I be out?I was pleasantly surprised by this book. The writing was very good. The characters weren't broken or mistrusting, and didn't have any other stereotypical issue that is often found in romance novels. Helly, the female character, didn't need saving beyond real-life scenarios in which ANY woman would appreciate some help. The male character, Gary, while indeed stereotypically muscled and chiseled and tanned and rich, didn't waffle over how he wasn't going to fall in love, which is refreshing given that most romance novels make a big deal of neither person wanting to fall in love, as if they're mammoths avoiding a tar pit.The playfulness of Helly and Gary was infectious. I actually found myself missing my husband (he was away for work when I read this) and thinking of ways to have fun with him when he returned. What's more is that my libido has been very low thanks to a medication I take, and I found myself a little worked up after reading some of the (very good) sex scenes. I should probably add that I'm a little (okay a whole lot) kinky, so the rough sex and small bit of dom/sub scenes really worked for me. I could see myself in them.This book actually put me in a good mood. I don't know if it's because I read serious books fairly often or what, but feeling happy after reading just doesn't happen often.I suppose this has taught me to branch out in regards to what I read, as I might find that not all erotica is boring, and a book can be both well-written and full of steamy sex.

I only give 5-stars if I remember a book over an extended period of time...my own little quirk. For immediate entertainment alone this book would warrant a 5-star review, but only time will tell. A character-driven novel with a lot of SEX, but a lot of STORY as well. Gary is definitely an ALPHA male and Helly is a little SPIT-FIRE with three protective brothers. Sibling interaction was well done and Shaye Marlow verbally takes me into the Alaskan landscape and lifestyle beautifully. SPARKS fly from the moment Gary moves to the lake. Gary and Helly are risk-takers that stand nose-to-nose and believe in PAYBACK. The HUMOR is spot-on and were my favorite parts. I laughed out loud occasionally. Author makes you wait for full-disclosure on Gary that gives an interesting and unexpected story ending. Would I recommend it? Absolutely!

It's hilarious, romantic in a way, but not enough story and too much explicit sexual scenes. I liked the heroine's ability to take care of herself and her stand up for herself against her brothers.
