he Story: Meg Antille works long hours on the charter cruise ship Far Horizon so she can send credits home to her family. Working hard to earn a promotion to a better post (and better pay), Meg has no time for romance. Former Special Forces soldier Red Thomsill only took the berth on the Far Horizon in hopes of getting to know Meg better, but so far she’s kept him at a polite distance. A scheduled stopover on the idyllic beach of a nature preserve planet may be his last chance to impress the girl. But when one of the passengers is attacked by a wild animal it becomes clear that conditions on the lushly forested Dantaralon aren’t as advertised – the ranger station is deserted, the defensive perimeter is down…and then the Far Horizon’s shuttle abruptly leaves without any of them. Marooned on the dangerous outback world, romance is the least of their concerns, and yet Meg and Red cannot help being drawn to each other once they see how well they work together. But can they survive long enough to see their romance through? Or will the wild alien planet defeat them, ending their romance and their lives before anything can really begin?

Red and Meg are believable characters and while their relationship develops into a romantic one, it was secondary to the main plot and was therefore more believable. This was a fast read for me, not because of its length, but because of its timing. The action flowed without feeling contrived, both of the main characters were strong, capable, and engaging. Scott's descriptions were broad enough to give the reader an imaginative feel for the setting without an overload of unnecessary details. I thoroughly enjoyed it and look forward to reading more of Ms. Scott's work.

This one also has romance in it which I enjoyed as well. The author does such a great job of world building. The hero and heroine are both brave, resourceful and yay, no TSTL moments for them. I appreciate how the 2ndary characters are more complex - they have their pros and cons.I'm surprised this author isn't read more widely. It's a shame as she really has a talent for story telling.

Pursued by baddies, our heroes try not to get eaten by giant snakes By Lee K Meg Antille is working on a cruise ship, and Simon "Red" Thomsill, recently retired soldier, has gotten a job aboard it to get to know her better. During a stopover on a nature preserve planet, things go ill. The ranger station is deserted, the big dangerous wild animals aren't being kept away as they should, and then the ships take off without their passengers. Simon, Meg, and the other passengers get pursued through the jungle by pirates and have to find a way to get off-planet safely. During the journey, Meg and Red develop a mutual respect to go with their mutual attraction. For the first half of the book I've no idea what Red finds so compelling about Meg. It seemed rather radical of him to change his career so blatantly to cozy up to a lady who he saw once and has never given him the slightest encouragement. He doesn't seem impulsive, so it felt at odds with his character. I learned more later, but sprinkling that information in might have sold me more on his joining the cruise crew. The secondary characters feel somewhat shallow, especially Peter. I can't remember anything about him other than his job and who he's married to.I liked that Meg and Red are reasonable likable people, and the obstacles to their involvement aren't contrived. An early scene where Meg rescues the party from the baddies is a breath of fresh air. The story is quick-paced with vivid flora and fauna accompanying dangerous situations. If you enjoy just desserts, some of the bad guys get what's coming to them in spectacular fashion. There's a cool subplot about some secret research on the planet that I wanted to know more about. It ties in with the fast-paced escape sequence at the end, but it begs for its own story (maybe it's told in other books?). I also enjoyed learning a bit more about the universe with its alien races and the political situation surrounding the characters, so I'll explore the rest of the universe with Scott's other Sectors books.
